Wadell Dingle
MIAMI – Wadell Dingle died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at North Shores Medical Center, Miami.

Born in Summerton, Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Julian Dingle and Lucy Bell Richburg Dingle. He was the brother of Emma Lee Robinson (Nathaniel) of Summerton.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Sat., Aug. 23, in the chapel of Poitier’s Home for Funerals, 2321 N.W. 62nd St., Miami.

Burial followed in Miami.

Shirley W. Lewis
Shirley Watson Lewis, 50, widow of Herbert Lewis, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at 560 Sunset Drive, Fairway Trailer Park, No. 11, Manning.

Born Aug. 2, 1953, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late T. and Sarah Watson. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She attended Sunday school and worship services at Church of God by Faith.

Survivors, besides her mother-in-law, Pearl Lewis of the home, include four sisters, Mary Mack (James) of Manning, Louise Watson of Summerton, Bessie Watson of Florida, and Georgia Mae Watson of New York City.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Wed., Aug. 20, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114, N. Church St., Manning. Elder Thomas Davis officiated the service.

Dorothy S. McFadden
Dorothy Smith McFadden, 70, wife of Daniel McFadden Sr., died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at 1053 Rolling Hills Drive, Summerton.

Born Dec. 6, 1932, in the Hallietown section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late John Smith and Beatrice Bethune Smith. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church, serving as missionary treasurer, member of the gospel choir, senior choir, prayer band and First Lady Aide Committee.

Survivors, besides her husband, includes two sons, Daniel McFadden Jr. (Jeanette) of Sumter and Dennis McFadden (Hattie) of Manning; two daughters, Veronica Green (James) of Manning and Janett Holliday (Joseph) of Summerton; a stepdaughter, Christine Dowe of San Antonio; two sisters, Marie Flowers (Raymond) of Philadelphia and Ida McFadden of Sumter; two stepsisters, Ethel Richburg of Manning and Ellen Croaker of St. Stephen; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Jessie John; four brothers; and seven sisters.

Services were held at noon, Sat. Aug. 23, in Gum Spring Missionary Baptist, US 15, Silver community, Pinewood. The Rev. O.J. Hannah, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Jacqueline Jackson, Ranzy McFadden Jr., James Carter Jr. and Dr. W. T. Johnson.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Ernest J. Rhodus
WEST COLUMBIA – Ernest Jefferson Rhodus, 78, formerly of Manning, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at 23-B Cooper Court in W. Columbia.

Born Aug. 4, 1925, in Manning, he was the son of the late James Gable and Jessie Ardis Rhodus. He was a retired saw filer in Clinton, NC, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one son, Ernest Jefferson Rhodus of Landrum; two daughters, Pamela D. McClellan of Gaston and Kathleen R. Slice of W. Columbia; a sister, Ann Harris of Cayce, five grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Thurs., Aug. 21, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Morris Smith will officiate.

Peter DiBenedetto
Peter DiBenedetto, 67, husband of Nancy Emma Bell DiBenedetto of Wyboo Plantation, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Glassboro, N.J., a son of the late Pietro and Frances DiBenedetto. He was a retired maintenance mechanic at John’s Manville. He was of the Assembly of God faith. DiBenedetto was an avid golfer and was member of the Hole in One Club at the Players Course in Wyboo with a hole in one on the fourth hole.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Manning are three sons, James P. “Jim” DiBenedetto and wife, Brenda of Coatesville, Pa., Mark R. DiBenedetto and wife Denise of Glassboro, N.J. and Peter H. “Pete” DiBenedetto and wife Emilia of Franklinville, N.J.; one brother Cripini “Skip” DiBenedetto of Mobileville, Ala.; two sisters, Mary Ewart of Georgia and Ann Priore of Clearwater, Fla.; and eight grandchildren, Mark, Sara, Dawn, Carson, Bradley, Karlie, Kelsey and Daniel DiBenedetto.

He was prededed in death by two brothers, Samuel and Cosmo DiBenedetto.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Jordan Methodist Church in Manning with the Rev. George Gain officiating.

The family will receive friends at noon today at the Community Center in Wyboo Plantation immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Jordan Methodist Church.

Leland Alsbrook
Leland Alsbrook, 88, husband of Lola Outlaw Alsbrook, died Wednesday, September 11, 2002, at his home in Manning.

Born April 21, 1914, in Manning, he was the son of the late Lewis and Lula Thames Alsbrook. He was a retired merchant, a WWII Army veteran, a member of Manning United Methodist Church, and the Men’s Bible Class. He was first married to the late Mary Bush Alsbrook, second married to the late Beatrice Wilson Alsbrook.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning are two daughters, Ferrellyn Cox Bryant of Manning and Sherrellyn Davis of Boone, N.C.; two sons, Jerry Alsbrook and Terry Alsbrook of Manning; a stepdaughter, Nina McKaughan of Columbia; a sister, Fannie Kuzio of Mt. Pocono, Pa.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six step- grandchildren; and four step-great- grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday in Manning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Steve Shugart and the Rev. Debra Quilling officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers included David Jones, Randy Oliver, Jimmy Prince, Kirt McKoughan, Willard Outlaw, and Eric Rygalski. Honorary pallbearers included the Men’s Bible Class of Manning United Methodist Church and Manning American Legion Post # 68.

Lola Outlaw Hayes Alsbrook
WEST COLUMBIA — Lola Outlaw Hayes Alsbrook, 92, died Sat., Aug. 30, 2003, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late John Ashby Outlaw and the late Estelle Atkinson Outlaw.

She was married to James Herbert Hayes for over 50 years until his death. In 1987, she married Leland Alsbrook and resided in Manning until his death in 2002.

Mrs. Alsbrook was a life member and judge with the N.C. Association of Garden Clubs. Her “green thumb” and love of plants inspired her daughter and three grandsons to be avid gardeners. She was a member of the Grand Chapter of N.C. Eastern Star since 1958, and in recent years the Beuclare Chapter of South Carolina. For many years, she taught the Young Boys’ Sunday School class at North Main Street Baptist Church in High Point, and for the past 15 years was a member of Manning United Methodist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Alsbrook composed numerous poems about life’s experiences, family, friends, and holidays. She often recited original poems, as well as published poetry, at church and family gatherings.

Survivors include a daughter, Nina Haynes McKaughan, of West Columbia; grandsons, Will McKaughan and his wife, Lisa, of Rock Hill; Mark McKaughan and his wife, Elaine, of Christiansburg, Va.; and Kurt McKaughan of West Columbia; and great-grandchildren; Jodie Grace McKaughan, Hannah Kaitlin McKaughan and Zachary Hayes McKaughan; three brothers, Moise Outlaw and Edward Outlaw, both of Summerton; and Joseph Outlaw of New London, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Lena; sisters, Elizabeth, Katherine and Leona; and a brother, John.

A celebration of the life of Lola Outlaw Hayes Alsbrook was led by Dr. Steve Shugart Mon., Sept. 1, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

Mrs. Alsbrook’s family extends a heart felt “thank you” to Dr. Tripp Jones, the nurses and staff on the 8th floor at Lexington Medical Center, and to the caring staff and many friends at Agape Senior Community.

Reginald Chewning
Reginald “Bump” Chewning, 93, husband of Rounette McCabe Chewning, died Sun. Aug. 31, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born Sept. 8, 1909, in Manning, he was the son of the late Claude Clinton and Mary McCoy Chewning. He was a retired farmer and a lifelong member of Jordan United Methodist Church.

Survivors, besides his wife of 70 years of Manning, include a daughter, Jean Hewitt of Manning; a daughter-in-law, Rose Chewning of Union; two grandsons, Craig Hewitt of Manning and Kenneth Chewning of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Fred Chewning of Manning; and a half-sister, Frances Howell of Garden City. A son, Reginald Claude Chewning and a grandson, Reggie Chewing, preceded him in death.

Services were held Tues., Sept. 2, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Joseph Poston and Miriam Hadden officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Jordan United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Jack Lowder, Sonny Thompson, Legare McCabe, Tod Graham, David McCabe and Alex Thompson. Honorary pallbearers included James Rawlinson, Pete Duke, Calvin Baynard and Charles Graham.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150, or to Jordan United Methodist Church, c/o Colleen Bochette, 2048 Bethlehem Road, Manning, SC 29102.

Willie M. Colclough
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Willie M. Colclough, 64, husband of Lillie Rankins Colclough, died Sun., Aug. 24, 2003, at Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, Ariz.

Born Oct. 23, 1938, in the Westminister community of Alcolu, he was the son of Elder Harry P. Colclough Sr. and the late Pauline Tomlin Colclough. He was a graduate of Manning Training School, received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from North Carolina A&T University, Greensboro, N.C.; and a master’s degree in business administration from St. John’s University, Queens, N.Y. He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in his youth and later became a member of La Casa De Cristo Lutheran Church of Scottsdale, Ariz., where he served on the Parish Council, Men’s Fellowship Group and led a weekly Bible study for businessmen of Phoenix. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.

Survivors besides his wife of the home and father of Alcolu include three sons, Sean Colclough and Jon-Erick Colclough, both of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Mark Colclough (Michelle) of El Mirage, Ariz.; one daughter, Vanessa Colclough of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three brothers, Harry Colclough Jr. (Mary) and Franklin D. Colclough (Edelle), both of Sumter; and Walter Colclough (Sarah) of Alcolu; three sisters, Annette C. Edwards of Alcolu; Polly Pringle (Bernie) of Charlotte, N.C.; and Rachel Chandler (James) of Sumter; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren.

Funeral services were held Mon., Sept. 1, at Westminister Presbyterian Church USA, Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu. The Rev. William Jones, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Drs. Franklin D. Colclough, Ella Busby and James Blassingame.

Burial followed in Westminister Cemetery, S. Brewington Road, Gable.

Memorials may be made to Westminister Presbyterian Church USA Building Fund, “In Memory of Willie M. Colclough,” 9124 Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu, SC 29001.

Ora Lee Snider Hilton
Ora Lee Snider Hilton, 71, widow of Thomas Jefferson Hilton, died Sun., Aug. 24, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 1, 1931, in the Sampit section of Georgetown, she was the daughter of the late Henry Snider and Rosa Kennedy Snider. She received her formal education in the public schools of Georgetown County. After moving to the Foreston community of Clarendon County, she joined Light Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir. She was a former employee of the Manning Restaurant of Manning and the W and K Restaurant.

Survivors include 12 sons, Levi Snider (Susie), Johnny Lee Hilton (Rose Ann), Jimmy Hilton (Marilyn), Jerry Hilton (Janie), Chris Snider (Barbara), all of Manning; Thomas Hilton Jr. (Deborah), Levan Hilton (Emmie), Herbert Green, all of Greeleyville; Lawrence Hilton (Gloria), Eddie Hilton, Melvin Hilton and Michael Hilton, all of Foreston; three daughters, Barbara Ann Footman of Foreston, Judy Pompey (Bobby) and Alinda Snider, both of Manning; two brothers, the Rev. Fred Snider (Cynthia) and Henry Snider Jr., both of Manning; five sisters, Hazel Williams and Martha Conyers (Frank), both of Manning; Mary Williams (Nathaniel) of Miami; Maria Bowman of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Tonna Sue Hicks (Daniel) of Strawberry, Pa.; 26 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Sara Bradshaw, Joe Ella Robinson and Beatrice Weekfall.

Funeral services were held Fri., Aug. 29, at Light Hill Baptist Church, Foreston; evangelist Elouise Pompey officiated, assisted by the Rev. Fred Snider, evangelist Carolyn Dyson and Minister Chris Johnson.
Burial followed in Junky Yard Cemetery in Foreston.
