Hattie Hallman
COLUMBIA – Hattie Ridgeway Hallman, 86, wife of the late Fred Savell Hallman, died Tues., Sept. 9, 2003.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Henry Badger Ridgeway and Ruth Riggs Ridgeway. She and her late husband were within one week of becoming charter members of Earlewood Baptist Church, where she served as church secretary for 23 years. She served as church clerk, chairman of the flower committee, Sunday School class teacher and was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She will strongly be remembered for having been a very loving, caring and exemplary wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and Christian servant. She also had a special love for gardening and cooking for friends and family.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda H. (Pat) DeMars of Columbia; granddaughters, Kim D. (Mark) Parrish of Chapin and Sheri D. Hamilton of Lexington; great-grandson, Hunter Hamilton of Lexington; sisters Mae Jenne of Florence, Pansy Ridgeway, Polly Sankus and Margaret Oldham of Manning; sisters-in-law, Thelma Ridgeway of Columbia and Jewell Ridgeway of High Point, N.C. She was preceded in death by sisters, Rena Harrington, Jennie Benton, Elma Wells and by brothers, H.B. and Delma Ridgeway.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Fri., Sept. 12, at Earlewood Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Dunbar Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lela M. Harrison
Lela Mae Harrison, 75, died on Tues., Sept. 16, 2003.

Born in Clarendon County on Feb. 13, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Jeanette McFadden.

Survivors include one son, Nathan Williams of Paterson, N.J.; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m., Mon., Sept. 22, in Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Olanta. Burial followed in the New McFadden Cemetery.

Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge in the arrangements.

R. David McCutcheon
Roy David McCutcheon, 43, husband of Marcia Sitter McCutcheon, died Wed., Sept. 17, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born June 16, 1960, in Lake City, he was a son of Louise Welch McCutcheon and the late James D. “Pete” McCutcheon. He was a retired supervisor from SCE&G in Charleston.

Survivors, besides his wife and mother of Sardinia, include two stepsons, Richard Hartsell of Newport, Tenn., and Matthew Hartsell of Danridge, Tenn.; two sisters, Brenda Shockley of Germany and Harriett Lewis of Olanta; four step-grandchildren; and two nephews, Brad Lewis and Shayne Shockley.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sat., Sept. 20, in McKenzie Tabernacle with the Rev. Jack McElveen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to McKenzie Tabernacle, c/o Gordon McElveen, 2591 Fire Tower Road, New Zion, SC 29111.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Richard D. McFaddin
Richard Dyson McFaddin of Turbeville, 64, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, after a battle with leukemia.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Talbert Eli McFaddin and Maude Carraway McFaddin.

A beloved husband, daddy, “Bop” and friend – he was a good and gentle man. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy Coker McFaddin of Turbeville; daughter, Muff McFaddin of Florence; daughter and son-in-law, Coco (Tom) Floyd of New Zion and a granddaughter, Nancy Carolina McFaddin Floyd. Other survivors include brothers, Marion McFaddin of Gable and T.E. (Brudd) McFaddin of Sumter and other special family members. He was a 1957 graduate of East Clarendon High School, he recently retired from Southeast Atlantic Grains and was the owner and operator of McFaddin Trucking Company for more than 25 years.

Funeral services were held Thurs., Sept. 18, at the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Carolina, 1247 Lake Murray Blvd., Irmo, SC 29063.

Floyd Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Richard C. McLeod Jr.
Richard “Charlton” McLeod Jr., 69, husband of Annie Laurie White McLeod, died Sat., Sept. 20, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late Richard C. McLeod Sr., and the late Grace Tisdale McLeod.

He was a member of Paxville Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class and formerly served as a deacon. He was retired from the S.C. State Forestry Commission after 35 years of service. He was a Mason and was a former NASCAR dirt track racing champion.

Survivors, besides his wife of Paxville, include one son, Ricky McLeod of Paxville and his girlfriend Sandy Water; a daughter, Diane McLeod Chappell of Paxville; two grandsons, Todd Chappell and Ryan Chappell of Paxville; and an aunt, Frances Haigler of Paxville. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Mike Chappell.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Tues., Sept. 23, in the Paxville Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.

Pallbearers included Jimmy Brunson, Dickie Potter, Wade McLeod, Harold Corbett, Joseph Persighin, Donnie Brown, Don Herlong, and Andrew McLeod.

Memorials may be made to the Paxville United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 5005, Paxville, SC 29102.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Olivet G. Singleton
Olivet Galloway Singleton, 75, widow of Delbert Harold Singleton Sr., died Tues., Sept. 16, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Medical Center, Columbia.

Born Sept. 13, 1928, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Dea Hedrick Galloway and Exaline Dargin Galloway. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and joined Green Hill Baptist Church where she served faithfully. She was a member of the gospel choir and was twice named Miss Green Hill Gospel Choir. After 21 years with the Clarendon County School District 2 as a food service technician, she retired in May 1994.

Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Hedrick (Sarah) Galloway and Delbert (Deirdra) Singleton Jr. of Columbia; and Trent L (Movita) Singleton of Ladson; one daughter, Gail S. Kennedy of the home; godmother, Mrs. Daisy Young of Manning; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Sun., Sept. 21, in the Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, assisting the Revs. Hedrick Galloway, W.J. Frierson, Eugene Mason and Minister David Woods. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund in Alcolu.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Mose Lemon
Mose Lemon, 76, widower of Maebell Huggins Lemon, died Monday, October 7, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 1, 1926, in Summerton, he was the son of the late John Henry and Carrie Rose Lemon. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of St. James AME Church. He was self-employed as a fisherman. He was a member of the Summerton Masonic Lodge No. 366 and YMCA Lodge NO. 12.

Survivors include six sons, Richard Jerome Lemon and his wife, Debra, and Joseph Lemon of Brooklyn, N.Y., Edward Lemon of Summerton, John Harold Lemon and his wife, Avis, of East Hartford, Conn., Clarence Woodrow Lemon and Kenneth Lemon of Baltimore; four daughters, Rebecca Newton and her husband, David, and Yvonne Lemon of Brooklyn, Kathy Pearson and Maggie Montgomery and her husband, Isaac, of Summerton; a brother, James A. Lemon and his wife, Clara, of Buffalo, N.Y.; two sisters, Pastor Ocelia Blue of Davis Station and Carrie Mae Lemon of Buffalo, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the House of God Miracle Temple in Davis Station with the Revs. Ocelia Blue, pastor, and Albert Thompson officiating.

Burial followed in St. James AME Church cemetery.

Monroe Benbow
Monroe Benbow, 90, husband of the late Emma J. Lemon Benbow, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Oct. 3, 1913, in the Davis Station area of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Cleveland Benbow and Nancy Davis Benbow.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he attended the Bethel AME Church in Davis Station. After moving to Rochester, N.Y., he attended Antioch Baptist Church, where he served on the senior usher board. He was a construction worker for the 436 Rochester Labor Union until his retirement.

Survivors include a son, Clifton (Helen) Benbow of Manning; two daughters Mary (Robert) McFadden of Boston and Charlotte B. Smith of Manning; a sister, Ethel Johnson of Manning; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Monroe Benbow Jr.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Mt. Chapel Baptist Church. The Rev. Carnell Witherspoon, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Rena Gilyard
Rena Gilyard, 88, widow of the late Adam Gilyard, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at 4D Meadow Field Apartments.

Born Oct. 29, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Stephany and Janie Merchant.

Survivors include two sons, George Gilyard of Philadelphia, and Jerry (Mary) Gilyard of Pinewood; five daughters, Ritha Bell Gilyard of Long Island, N.Y., Geneva Gilyard of Philadelphia, JoAnne Gilyard of Philadelphia, Cynthia Gilyard and Carolyn (Hawley) Robinson of Summerton; a daughter-in-law, Lucy Gilyard of Richmond, Va.; a sister-in-law, Maggie Merchant of New York; 35 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six children, two grandchildren, three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiated the service.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Leon Harris Jr.
Leon Harris Jr., 80, widower of Virginia Walker Harris, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at his residence in Mt. Pleasant.

Mr. Harris was born in Anderson, S.C.; he was the son of the late Leon Harris and Susan Steele Harris. He was a graduate of Washington and Lee University class of 1947 and received his Juris Doctorate in 1950. He represented Anderson County in the S.C. House of Representatives 1950 to 1954. Mr. Harris was retired from Manning High School where he served as teacher, coach, and principal from 1956 through 1981. He taught at Clarendon Hall from 1981 through 1992. He was member of Manning United Methodist Church. He was an Army Air Corps B-24 pilot in the Pacific in WWII.

Survivors include two sons, Leon Harris III of Anderson and David C. Harris of Great Falls; a sister, Mary Ann (Paul) Sensbury of Darlington; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1 in Norway Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Charles R. Hook officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Dr., Columbia, SC 29210.
