Betty Lou Gerald Price
Betty Lou Gerald Price, 68, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at a local nursing center.

Born in Marion, she was the daughter of the late Dudley and Leatha Shelley Gerald.

Mrs. Price was a member of the Alcolu Church of God of Prophecy and a former Red Cross volunteer.

Survivors include two sons, Billy David Price of Lake City and Dudley Ray Price of Sumter; three daughters, Alice “Pookie” Lindley of Sumter, Wanda Price Tennant of Summerton and Linda Price Floyd of Ft. Worth, Texas; three brothers, Bobby Gerald of Marion, Joe Gerald of Murrells Inlet and Zack Gerald of Florence; two sisters, Mary Alice Williamson of Marion and Mildred Love of Florence; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Gerald.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory in Sumter. The Rev. Ray Barfield officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.

Baby Girl Shavanna Baxter
Shavanna Baxter died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of Shenika James and Levan Baxter Jr.

Survivors include her maternal grandmother, Rosa Marie James; maternal great-grandparents, Charlie James and Ethel Mae Nelson James; paternal grandparents, Levan and Francena Baxter Hilton; and two sisters, Tatianna and Iclind James.

Services were 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Manning Cemetery with Evangelist Elizabeth Richburg officiating.

Charlie L. Weathers
Columbia - Charlie L. Weathers, 70, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.

Born Dec. 15, 1932, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Wash Weathers Sr. and Lillie Davis Weathers. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors include two brothers, Wash Weathers of Baltimore and Frank Weathers of Tilly, N.C.; three sisters, Lillie Cordon of Washington, D.C., and Annie Gillum and Bertha Weathers of Rembert; and three aunts, Sarah Carryall of Columbia, Lassie China of Rembert and Katherine Williams of Chapin.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Jones.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. R.E. Bennett officiating.

Burial followed in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Rembert.

Family and friends served as pallbearers and flower bearers.

William K. Pearson
William “Willie” King Pearson, 78, son of the late Hattie Bell King McKnight and Selven Pearson, stepson of the late Edward McKnight, died May 7, 2003. He was born April 22, 1925, in Summerton.

He was reared in a Christian home and at an early age joined St. Mark AME Church. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. From there, he journeyed and served in the United States Navy. After serving in the Navy, he received an honorable discharge. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he resided in Brooklyn, where he was an entrepreneur. He also joined Calvary AME Church, where he served on the usher board and trustees. He was a thirty-third degree Mason of St. Johns Baptist lodge No. 10, Most Wishful United Orient Grand AF and AM Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon returning to Sumter, he reunited with St. Mark AME Church and was an active member in the life of the church. He served as an usher and trustee. In Sumter, he joined several organizations including the Spectrum Seniors Center, where he participated in the Senior Olympics and the bowling league. He was the driver for the senior activities.

Willie was a man who loved God and his family.

Survivors include a loving wife, Geneva S. Pearson; four daughters, Marilyn Roberts and her husband, George, of Bronx, N.Y., Sabrina and Elisa Patrick of Boston and Dorothy Green and her husband, Richard, of Thomasville, N.C.; six sons, Harvey Stukes and his wife, Debbie of Coppers Cove, Texas, Johns Stukes and his wife, Thomasine, of Thomasville, Jimmy Stukes and his wife, Joeann, of Sumter, Joseph Stukes and his wife, Karen, of Thomasville, Sidney Stukes of Copper Cove and Winfred Stukes and his wife, Frizel, of Summerton; two sister, Dorothy McKnight Wiley of Lithonia, Ga., and Laverne Brooks and her husband, Calvin, of Richmond, Va.; one adopted sister, Suzanne Gist; two brothers, James McKnight and his wife, Marilyn, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and David McKnight of Brooklyn; an aunt, Mrs. Victoria Brailsford of Manning; a grand-uncle, Johnny Dyson of Buffalo, N.Y.; a stepmother, Mrs. Christine Pearson of Richmond; a God mother, Mrs. Julia Constantine; 25 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark AME Church with the Rev. Ernest Brown presiding, assisted by the Rev. O.J. Hannah

Burial followed in St. Mark Memorial Garden.

The nieces served as honorary floral bearers and the missionary at St. Mark AME Church as honorary floral bearer. The trustees of St. Mark AME Church served as honorary pallbearers.

Carolyn M. Wilson
Carolyn Levon McFadden Wilson, 50, wife of Eddie Wilson, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 1, 1952, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Myers McFadden and Midred Dimery McFadden. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Melina Presbyterian Church. She attend Walker-Gamble High School.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Wilson Jr., of Landover, Md., two daughters, Keisha Wilson and Tamara (Michael) Coleman, of the home; one brother, Myers (Jacqueline) McFadden of the home; one sister, Queen (James) Diggs of Silver Springs, Md.; two grandchildren; six nieces she reared as her own, Sharon, Kim, Karen, Vette, Sharie and Breanna.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Melina Presbyterian Church, Gable, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Dorothy C. Ardis
Dorothy Copeland Ardis, 78, wife of Wilbur C. Ardis Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Robert O. and Mabel White Copeland. She was a member of Manning First Baptist Church, attended Anderson College, and worked as a clerk for General Telephone for 30 years.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are one son, W. Carlyle Ardis Jr. and wife, Susan, of Manning; three grandchildren, Stacy Stevens, Carole Evans and Wilbur C. Ardis III; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ida Ruth Holladay, Iona C. Phillips and Martha C. Hightower.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Revs. Danny Bridges and Carey McElveen officiating. Burial followed in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Manning First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 610, Manning, SC 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Floyd
Dorothy “Dot” Thompson Floyd, 79, wife of Alfred J. Floyd Sr., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Sumter.

Born Dec. 1, 1924, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Edward and Callie Daniels Thompson. Mrs. Floyd was a member of Lemira Presbyterian Church. She worked for Carolina Power & Light Co. for 29 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by many.

Survivors include her devoted and loving husband of 57 years, Alfred J. Floyd Sr.; a daughter, Cindy Gailey and husband, Michael, of Asheville, N.C.; a son, Al Floyd Jr. and wife, Melanie, of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Rachel and Andrew Gailey, and Trey and Brooks Floyd; three sisters, Hazel Boyce, Joyce Link and Cleo DuBose; four brothers, Harold Thompson, Hugh Ray Thompson, Murray Thompson and Julian Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janis Floyd; three sisters, Cecile Thompson, Caro Andrews and Eva Lee; and two brothers, Ed Thompson and Billy Thompson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew E. Basham Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Lillie B. Hamilton
Lillie Baxter Hamilton, 85, widow of Jerry Hamilton, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Nazareth and Luetisher Tindal Baxter. She was educated in the public schools of Manning. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined Beards Chapel AME Church in Charleston, where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. For 50 years, she was employed as a seamstress.

Survivors include a devoted nephew, Richard Baxter of the home; one adopted daughter, Daisy Calhoun of Sumter; five sisters, Gladys (Ivan) St. Thomas and Rosa J. Fullard, both of Sumter, Luetisher Dickey of Lynchburg, Cardie M. Gamble of Baltimore and Jennie (Burk) Holliday of Slow Low, Ariz.; two brothers, Douglas (Katherine) Baxter of Lynchburg and Hayward (Ruth) Hough of Baltimore; one brother-in-law, Ben Murray of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one adopted son, Lorenzo Hamilton; and one adopted daughter, Mary A. Baxter Wilson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, U.S. 301, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor.

Burial was in Elizabeth Church Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth W. Garber
CAMDEN – Elizabeth “Betty” Walker Garber, 80, of Camden, widow of Stanley M. Garber Jr., died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003,

Born in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Claude Townes and Norma Wilkins Walker. She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, where she held many offices with the Women of the Church, including president.

She was a retired journalist with the Chronicle-Independent newspaper and a former teacher with Kershaw County School District. She graduated valedictorian of Summerton High in 1940. She was a 1944 graduate of Furman University. Mrs. Garber was a former president of the Camden Junior Welfare League and past president of Camden Garden Club. She was honored as Kershaw County Mother of the Year in 1969.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Betsy Hill of Lugoff, Mrs. Paul (Katherine) Branham and Susan Frost of Camden, and Mrs. Gregg (Claudia) Marshall of Pawleys Island; 11 grandchildren, John Morrison Pusser, Joy Elizabeth Hill, Paul Everett Branham, Stanley Garber Branham, William Wilkins Branham, Richard Hugh Marshall III, Elizabeth Walker Marshall, Mary Gregg Marshall, Katherine Grace Frost, Michael Thomas Frost and Claudia Ann Frost; a sister, Mrs. Margaret (Peggy) W. Everett; and two brothers, Claude Townes Walker Jr. and Thomas Irby Walker of Summerton.

Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Quaker Cemetery. Dr. William F. Summers officiated the service.

William Howard Franklin
William Howard Franklin, 91, husband of Willimea Prince Franklin, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Mariner Health Care in Sumter.

Born June 16, 1912, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late John and Mary Franklin. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was self-employed for many years.

Survivors include a son, Benee Lee (Vivian) Franklin; two stepsons, Abraham McDuffie of Sumter and John McDuffie of Augusta, Ga.; an adopted son, Willie Lee Donald of Sumter; two daughters, Shirley (Garland) Pack and Gloria Jean Franklin of Sumter; and a stepdaughter, Ann Gary of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by three sons, James, Amos and Linwood Franklin.

Services were held on Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Alcolu. The Rev. Dennis C. Brock, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. William Prince and evangelist L. White.

Burial followed in the Mt. Nebo Church Cemetery.

Williams Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
