Carrie Mae Epps
GREELEYVILLE – Carrie Mae Epps, 50, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in Greeleyville.

Born in the Greeleyville section of Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Epps and Ella Pompey Epps. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated with the class of 1971 from C.E. Murray High School in Greeleyville. She was a member of New Covenant Apostolic Church, serving as youth Sunday school teacher, adult choir, missionary secretary and usher board. She was employed at Warsaw Manufacturing for many years and later was employed at Wise Company until her health failed.

Survivors include her fiancé, Robert White of Manning; a son, Darin Epps of the home; five brothers, Fred (Rebecca) Epps of Greeleyville, General Lee (Denise) Epps of Salters; Harry (Myra) Epps of St. Stephens, Jeff (Pam) Epps of Manning and Willie Epps of Myrtle Beach; and two sisters, Rosa and Mary Epps of Greeleyville.

Services were held Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at New Covenant Apostolic Church, in Greeleyville. Bishop W. Ron Dunmore, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by District Elder Keels.

Burial followed in Hunter’s Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Ann M. Cope
Ann Matolcsy Cope, 60, widow of James Raymond Cope, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at her home in Manning.

Born Feb. 23, 1943, in Detroit, she was the daughter of the late Steve and Anna Kulchar Matolcsy. She was a retired waitress and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Victoria Ann Pickitt of Walnut Grove, Miss.; a son, Kenny Tow of Manning; a brother, Steven West of Yankeetown, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Barfield
QUEENS, N.Y. – Richard Barfield, 58, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Mary Immaculate Hospital.

Born Feb. 12, 1945, in New York, he was the son of the late Mrs. Bessie Barfield Boines and the stepson of Williams Boines Sr. Richard, affectionately known as “Dick,” was raised by his grandparents, the late Mr. Harry and Mrs. Rebecca Davis Barfield. He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County, graduating in the Class of 1963 from Eastern High School in Sumter. While in high school, he was an avid basketball player, member of the student council and a leader in most of his activities. He also played baseball with the Westminster League and the St. Albans League in New York.

In addition to his mother and grandparents, Richard was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Boines; and a sister, Sandra Fordham.

Survivors include two daughters, Tina Barfield of St. Albans, N.Y., and Dana Barfield of Hampton, Va.; his stepfather, William Boines Sr. of Richmond, Va.; one brother, William Boines Jr. of St. Albans, N.Y.; four sisters, Barbara (Darnell) Jackson of Alcolu, Vera (Rashid) Al-Sabur of Columbus, Ohio, Vernessa Rose of Richmond, Va., and Alice Tomlin McLeod of Jersey City, N.J.; a granddaughter, Dominique of Hampton, Va.; three uncles, Walter (Rosa) Barfield of Alcolu, Harry Lee (Roberta) Barfield of South Ozone Park, N.Y., and Russell (Sarah) James of Sumter; special cousins reared as brothers, William Rodney (Patricia) Wilson and David (Clara) Wilson of New Haven, Conn.; a special cousin reared as a sister, Doris (Al) Van Dyke of Ocala, Fla.; a special niece, Darnella Jackson of Alcolu; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at St. James Holiness Church. Elder Eddie Johnson, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Elder Darnell Jackson, Bishop James B. Wilson, Minister Alfreda Johnson and Minister LeGatha McFadden.

Burial followed in Barfield Cemetery, Alcolu.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Lonnie Avant Sr.
Lonnie “Ting-a Ling” Avant Sr., 58, husband of Josephine Lemon Avant, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 11, 1945, in Lanes, he was the son of the late Joe Avant Sr. and Elizabeth Harris Avant.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1965 graduate of Manning Training High School. As a youth, he attended Sunday school and worship service at Greenhill Baptist Church of Alcolu. He also attended Sumter Area Technical College and was presently employed by Cooper Tools of Sumter. He served 26 years in the U.S. Army and S.C. National Guard. He was a Vietnam War veteran and, as a sergeant, he received numerous awards in his company, Manning National Guard Battery “C,” 4/178th Field Artillery.

Survivors, besides his wife, include a son, Lonnie Avant Jr., of Manning; two daughters, Deborah D. Avant and Patricia M. Avant of Manning; a special young lady that he valued as his own, Michele R. Mason; a brother, Willie Avant of San Diego; four sisters, Shirley (Jessie) Lewis, Carrie (David) McDonald, Alice (Jackie) Way and Sadie Williams of Manning; two aunts, Alphonso Davis of Queens, N.Y., and Alley Avant of Philadelphia; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Greenhill Baptist Church in Alcolu. The Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. W.J. Frierson and Jonathan Anderson.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Marie Alsbrook
Elizabeth Marie Alsbrook, 89, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at a local nursing center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late McKeever Desausure Alsbrook and the late Elizabeth Marie Stukes Alsbrook.

Miss Alsbrook was a member of Trenholm Road Baptist Church in Columbia and various other organizations. She was a graduate of Droan’s Business College and also received a degree in music at the Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans in 1956. She was a retired associate of Carlisle Associates of Columbia.

Survivors include a brother, Milton (Juanita) Alsbrook of Sumter; and a brother-in-law, Lonnie Smith of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Smith and Lila Bellinger.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen S. Hutson
Helen Sturgis Smith Hutson, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 1, 1917, in Lenoir, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Robert Marvin and Mamie LeFevre Smith. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning. A 1939 graduate of Watts School of Nursing in Durham, N.C., she served as a member of the Army Nurse Corps from 1942 to 1945, and retired from Clarendon Memorial Hospital in 1973.

Survivors include a daughter, Melissa H. Dean of Hillsborough, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth S. Grigg of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, William M. Smith of Manning and Harold L. Smith of Lenoir, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kit (Amy) Borras, Lalio (Bobby) Pereyo, Leah Gehrman and Will Gehrman and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Chris Cohen; a sister, Juanita Smith Johnston; two brothers, Robert Marvin Smith Jr. and Jack Courtney Smith.

Memorials services were held on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning. The Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Debra Quilling.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Leroy Tidwell
Mr. Leroy Tidwell, 68, husband of Linda Lowder Tidwell, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Lee County, he was the son of the late James Roland Tidwell and the late Janie Outlaw Tidwell.

Mr. Tidwell attended Green Acres Assembly of God Church and the Paxville Baptist Church. He was formerly employed by Shaw Air Force Base Civil Service. He was founder of Country Cured Meats and Tidwell Landscaping and Plumbing Co. He was first married to the late Jean S. Tidwell.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, include two sons, R.L. Tidwell Jr. and James C. Osborne of Sumter; two daughters, Susan E. Tidwell and Brenda T. Long of Sumter; a brother, Eugene Tidwell of Lexington; three sisters, Lorine Broadway of Manning, Eula Walker of Sumter and Jennie Farmer of Covington, Ga.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Allen Alsbrooks of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ken Alsbrooks of Deland, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Sheila Platt and Sharon Moore of Manning; six step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory. The Revs. Donnie Collins and the Eugene Mosier officiated the service. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Robert Nelson
Robert “Teddy” Nelson, 59, companion of Sadie Adger Hayes, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 1102 Tearcoat Road, Alcolu.

Born March 7, 1944, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Levi Nelson Sr. and Cardiver Frierson Nelson. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1964 graduate of Manning Training School. He was an employee of Square D for 25 years. He served in the Vietnam War and received an honorable discharge. In his youth, he joined Reeseville AME Church.

Survivors besides his companion, Sadie A. Hayes of the home, include two sons, Robert Lee Nelson Jr. of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Bernard Nelson of Largo, Fla.; one stepson, Reggie Hayes of Paxville; two stepdaughters, Melissa Hayes of Lithonia, Ga., and Michelle Mahoney of Sumter; four brothers, Grant Lee Nelson of New York City, William Levi Nelson Jr. of Sumter, Selvin (Barbara) Nelson of Alcolu and Larry Nelson of Manning; five sisters, Lillie Kelly of Manning, Inez (Franklin) Simmons of Alcolu, Emma (Raymond) Larris of Baltimore, Phozia Jackson and Barbara Nelson, both of New York City; and seven step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Reeseville AME Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Marie Harvin, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mitchel Adger and the Rev. W.J. Chandler.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Susannah Lesane
JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Susannah Lesane, 76, widow of Julius Lesane, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Greenville Hospital, Jersey City, N.J.

Born March 30, 1927, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Edster Tomlin Sr. and Alice Blackwell Tomlin. She received her education at Westminister Public School in Clarendon County. At an early age, she received Christ and was baptized. She relocated to Jersey City, N.J., and joined New Hope Baptist Church Years later, she joined New Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member for more than 20 years. “Sue,” as she was affectionately known, was employed for more than 15 years at Jonathan Logan, until they closed. For the next 15 years, she worked at Central Laundry with many of her friends. Her last 15 years before retirement were spent in the Dietary Department at Greenville Hospital.

Survivors include her only child, Alice (Walter) McLeod; three sisters, Sarah China, Mary Kennedy and Ann McFadden, all of Sumter; four brothers, Edster Tomlin of Augusta, Ga., James Herbert Tomlin of Columbia, Eugene (Shirley) Tomlin and Albertus (Betty) Tomlin, both of Sumter; four granddaughters, Geraldine (Melvin) Williams, Jacqueline (John) McLeod-Williams, Suzette (Derrick) DeLoach and Deaconess Lakeisha (Deacon Michael) Lynch; 12 great-grandchildren; three aunts; three sisters-in-law; a special friend of more than 35 years, Otis Jenkins of Jersey City, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Leroy, John Wesley, Lee and Willie Tomlin; and one sister, Naomi Tomlin.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at St. Paul AME Church, Plowden Mill Road, with the Rev. Dr. B.J. Glover, pastor.

Burial was in Durant Cemetery.

Marguerite C. Mills
Marguerite Cain Mills, 90, of Orangeburg, formerly of Manning, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004.

Born Aug. 29, 1913, in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late William Odil Cain and Marguerite Nelson Cain. She was reared in Sumter. She received her formal education in Sumter city schools and was a graduate of Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing. For many years she served as a registered nurse on the staff of Clarendon Memorial Hospital and, subsequently, as a school nurse for Clarendon County Schools. She was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Burgess Mills of Manning, William Cain Mills of Mt. Pleasant and David Nelson (Susan Mikell) Mills of Richmond, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Linda Haley Mills of Manning; five grandchildren, Emmie Mills Michau, Robert Burgess Mills Jr., Anne Tiphaine Mills, David Nelson Mills Jr. and Julian Paisley Mikell Mills; a great-grandson, Blake Burgess Micheau; and a sister, Emily Cain Fraser of Lexington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roland Dow Mills III; three sisters and two brothers.

A family burial service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at the Manning Cemetery. The Very Rev. William N. McKeachie, Dean of The Cathedral Church of St. Luke & St. Paul, Charleston, officiated the service.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
