Lee Ragin
Lee Ragin, 84, widower of Susie Mae Canty Ragin, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence.

Born July 10, 1919, in the St. Paul section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Elijah Ragin and Mary Fludd Ragin. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He joined Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton. After he relocated to the Foreston-Greeleyville section of Clarendon County, he joined Pine Grove AME Church, serving on the trustee board, YMCA Lodge as treasurer and treasurer of Pride of Foreston Masonic Lodge No. 296.

Survivors include three sons, Dell (the Rev. Annette) Ragin of Manning, Raymond (Mable) Ragin of Sumter and Marvin (Sophie) Ragin of Eastover; five daughters, Mary Ragin, Azalee Bradshaw, Bertha (Edmond) Levy and Judy Ragin of Manning, and Juanita (Sylvester) Hill of Upland, Calif.; an adopted daughter, Marsha Canty of Troy, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Viola Banks of Troy, N.Y.; one brother, June Ragin of New York City; one sister, Mary Lawyer of Buffalo, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Pine Grove AME Church, Greeleyville. The Rev. Francis Gathers, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Rufus Gaymon, Leroy Green, Annette Ragin and O’Donald Dingle.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mae Bell B. Postell
Mae Bell Bosier Postell, 93, widow of Robert “Mood” Postell, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 8, 1910, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Linval and Malvena Johnson Bosier. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Friendship AME Church and accepted Christ. She was a faithful, loyal and supportive member, serving as Sunday school teacher, missionary, church secretary, president of Stewardess Board, church treasurer, president of the Senior Usher Board, member of the Steward Board and the Mother of the Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Dora Herriott of Wilmington, N.C.; two sons, Roosevelt (Lillian) Postell of Manning and Robert (Jerusha) Postell of Washington, D.C.; 14 grandchildren, James Albert, Lillie Ann (William), Loretta, Bernice, Felix, Shirley (David), Robert, Linda (Archie), Andre, Wendell, Carlo (Faye), Katrina, Quinea, Bryan (Tracy); 30 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Emma Jane Postell McFadden and Daisy Postell Gaymon; a special niece, Thelma Bosier McBride; a special cousin, Sarah Richburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Gardenia Postell Simon; two granddaughters, Geronia Herriott Holden and Lisa Postell; one great-grandson, Michael Holden; and two sons-in-law.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Friendship AME Church in Silver. The Rev. Dr. Henry Cohen, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Joseph Postell, Laddie Howard, Dr. George Gaymon and Dr. Herman Gibson Jr.

Burial followed in Friendship AME Church Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

James K. Poe
James Koonce Poe, 71, husband of Barbara Jean Fann Poe, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, in Providence Hospital, Columbia.

Born May 10, 1932, in Rock Hill, he was the son of the late Oran Stedman and Kathleen Koonce Poe. He was a retired sporting goods salesman and was a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning, where he served as elder and past president of the Men of the Church.

Survivors include his wife of Manning; a daughter, Betsy Shuford of Mt. Pleasant; two sons, James Koonce Poe Jr. of Walterboro and Donald Fann Poe of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Anne Lyle Brown of Lexington, Ky.; six grandsons; and one granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Oran Stedman Poe Jr.; and a sister, Betsy Poe Ratterree.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning. The Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes Jr. officiated the service. Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, Building Fund, P.O. Box 207, Manning, SC 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Edna H. Oliver
Edna “Plush” Holliday Oliver, 86, widow of Pickney Oliver, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1917, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Mattie Holiday. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton.

Survivors include one son, Joe Louis Oliver of Summerton; three daughters, Kathleen Oliver of the home, Eva Bell (Jarrott) Jackson of Summerton and Sarah Rhames of Trenton, N.J.; 50 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sons, Bradley, George, John and Bubba; and three daughters, Edna Lee Oliver, Quite M. Fulmore and Marie Jackson.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton. The Rev. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiated the service.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Clayton Nelson
Mr. Clayton Nelson, 46, of 1054 Roosevelt Lane, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born in Rimini, he spent most of his life in Thomasville. He attended public schools in Davidson County. He was employed with Creative Metal Inc. before moving to Summerton in 1998 where he was employed with Durant Home Builders.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Rosa Mae Nelson Simon of Thomasville; brothers, Willie (Shirley) Simon and Wilbert Simon of Thomasville; one sister, Sandra Simon of Thomasville; one aunt, Charlotte Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a devoted friend, Mary Bates of Summerton; and two special cousins, Annette Regan and Elaine Drummond.

Services were held on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in Emmanuel Baptist Church. Burial followed in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

S.E. Thomas Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Woodrow T. Moss
Woodrow Thomas “Woody” Moss, 62, husband of Janet Parks Moss, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, in the VAMC in Charleston.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the residence, 1713 Clearview Drive, Manning. The Rev. Fred Johnson officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to VAMC Voluntary Services, 109 Bee St., Charleston, SC 29401 or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Lindy L. Moore
Lindy Liston Moore, 76, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at a Columbia hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Rufus Talmadge Moore and Mary DuBose Moore. He served as a Marine during the Korean War, retired as a carpenter with the Freeman Mill and was a member of the Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae Robinson of the home; a daughter, Pam Moore of Sumter; a sister, Julia Moore of Turbeville; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Moore and Kitty Robinson; a special niece, Donna Parker; a special grandniece, Ashley Parker; and a number of special nephews and friends.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church in Turbeville. Burial followed in the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Free Will Baptist Children’s Home of Turbeville.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Sam Harrison
Robert Sam Harrison, 68, husband of Lizzie Epps Harrison, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born on Jan. 12, 1935, in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Sam Harrison and Pearl McDowell Harrison. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church. He was employed for more than 25 years with Harris Welch Farms in Turbeville.

Survivors, besides his wife, include five sons, Sammie (Mae Thelma) Harrison Jr. of Lynchburg, Tommie Harrison of New Zion, Larry (Maggie) Harrison of Lynchburg, Gary (Thomasena) Harrison of Coward, and Louis Miller of Turbeville; five daughters, Patricia Harrison of Turbeville, Shirly (Bob) Faulk of Gable, Teresa (Wyman) Moore of Lynchburg, Denise (Steven) Green of Olanta, and Lashonda (Harvin) Frierson of Manning; three brothers, J.L. Harrison (Ethel) and Willie Harrison of Turbeville, George (Bo) Harrison of Scranton; five sisters, Ida Mae Harey of Philadelphia, Sadie Rufus and Pearl Harrison both of Turbeville, Meida Williams of Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y., and Noble (Daniel) Stephens of Little River; 27 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.

Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Turbeville. The Rev. Zander Davis, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Moses “Son” Gibson Jr.
Moses “Son” Gibson Jr., 59, husband of Jewel Cooley Gibson, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in the River Road Community of Summerton.

Born Jan. 22, 1944, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Moses Gibson Sr. and Lessie Johnson Gibson. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church. He was employed with Local 172 for 35 years in Trenton, N.J., until his retirement.

Survivors include, a son, James Gibson of Baltimore, two step-sons, Stephene and Darren McGee of Trenton; two daughters, Patricia Gibson of Baltimore and Christa Gore of Myrtle Beach; a step-daughter, Cynthia Coleman of Trenton; four brothers, Louis (Alice) Gibson, Willie (Susie) Gibson, Leon Gibson, of Summerton, and Rufus (Bertha) Gibson of Deerfield, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Tyrone “Ronnie” Gibson.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, in The Greater St. Phillip RUME Church in Rimini. The Rev. Warren Hatcher officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Amos Hatcher and Jacob Clark.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Janie Gaskin
WALTERBORO – Janie Pauline Green Gaskin, 87, of Easley, formerly of Walterboro, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at her son’s residence in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Gaskin was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Turbeville, and was the daughter of the late Daniel Luther Green and Susan Alma Broadway Green. Janie graduated from Turbeville High School and Winthrop College. She did graduate work at the University of South Carolina and The Citadel. She taught school for 33 years in the high schools of Hemingway, Moncks Corner and Walterboro.

Janie was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Easley, where she was a member of the Wesley Bible Class. Before moving to Easley, she was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church, being active in the Chancel Choir for 61 years and other positions with young people of various churches. She was a member of teacher-related organizations, past member of the Pickens County Education Association and Pickens County AARP. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International from April, 1961 until her death.

Survivors include a son, David Lowell (Doris Chestnut) Gaskin Jr., of Mount Pleasant; a daughter, Kaye Gaskin Young of Easley; four grandchildren, Christina Gaskin Davis of Rock Hill, Jeanie Gaskin Bristow of Rock Hill, Lt. Charles Antony Young of the U.S. Navy stationed in Japan, and David Lowell Young of Denton, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Jussely, Lowell and Anna Davis of Rock Hill; and a sister, Virginia Green of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Green Allen.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Bethel United Methodist Church, in Walterboro. The Rev. Lee Cotheran Jr. officiated the service. Burial followed in Live Oak Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to: Hospice of S.C. or Hospice of Charleston.

Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes of Walterboro was in charge of the arrangements.
