Louella H. Felder
Louella Horton Felder, 97, widow of Richard P. Felder Sr., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born March 28, 1906, in Davis Station, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Isabelle Brasington Horton. She was a 1927 graduate of Columbia College. Prior to her marriage, she was a former elementary school teacher. She was married to Richard P. Felder Sr., for 67 years. In 1958, the Felder’s were named “Farm Family of the Year.” She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and an active member of Summerton Presbyterian Church for many years.

Survivors include a son, R.P. “Dickie” (Lulie Eaddy) Felder Jr. of Summerton; three grandchildren, R.P. “Rick” Felder III and Elizabeth “Betsy” Felder McDonald of Columbia, and Watson E. Felder of Murrells Inlet; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Simmons Felder.

Services were held at on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Summerton Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Garland Hart officiated the service.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Presbyterian Church, 16 S. Cantey St., Summerton, SC 29148 or to Amy Simmons Felder Memorial Fund, c/o Clarendon Hall, P.O. Box 609, Summerton, SC 29148.

Majorie B. Blackwell
Mrs. Majorie Brunson Blackwell, 89, widow of the Rev. N.R. Blackwell Sr., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital, Charleston.

Born Jan. 10, 1914, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Mood and Katie Brunson. Mrs. Blackwell received her Bachelor of Science degree from Morris College and did further studies at S.C. State College. In her professional capacity, she served as elementary supervisor of Clarendon County School Districts 1, 2 and 3, and as a classroom teacher. She was a member of Trinity AME Church and served dutifully as a missionary, senior choir member, member of the steward board and many other church auxiliaries. Mrs. Blackwell served as chairperson for the Cancer Society of Clarendon County for more than 15 years. She was also a founding member of the Clarendon County Branch of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.

Survivors include one daughter, Elaine (Woodrow) Brown of Newport News, Va.; three grandchildren, Regina B. (Brian) Brown of Richmond, Va., Woodrow N. Brown of Minneapolis and Robert M. Brown of Newport News, Va.; one great-grandchild, Brianna Blackwell Brown of Richmond, Va.

She was preceded in death by her son, Norman R. Blackwell Jr.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Trinity AME Church. The Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough officiated the service.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Blackwell-Jenkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jeremiah David Sr.
Jeremiah David Sr., 78, husband of Hessie Lawson David, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital, Charleston.

Born May 20, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Jemeriah David and Bessie Bennett David. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Spring Hill AME Church. He was a former member of Spring Hill Masonic Lodge No. 188, Summerton. He was a farmer.

Survivors include two sons, Solomon and George David of Miami, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, two brothers and two sisters.

Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004 at Spring Hill AME Church, in the Davis Crossroad community. The Rev. Phil Mixon, pastor, officiated the service.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Martin White
Thelma Martin White, widow of Casper C. White, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Paul B. Martin and Virginia Fairy Martin.

Mrs. Martin attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of New Hope AME Church and was employed by the former Exide Battery Company of Sumter for many years.

She was a member of Silver Leaf Chapter No. 333 Order of the Eastern Star and the NAACP.

Survivors include two sons, Claybourne (Lucille) White of Pinewood and Casper White of Pittsburg, Ca.; a daughter, Linda (John) Gibson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four brothers, Willie and Henry Martin of Rimini, Johnnie Martin of Englewood, N.J. and Carroll Martin of Lake City; two sisters, Mattie James of Hampton, Va., Virginia (Sam) Fulmore of Lake City, seven grandchildren, Natalie Gibson, Cedrick White, Lateefah White, Latoya White, Shani Gibson, Kaya Gibson and Jellani Gibson.

Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at New Hope AME Church in Pinewood. The Rev. J.D. Seawright officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Melissa Green, Saymon James and Leroy T. James.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Joe E. Walker
Mr. Joe Edward Walker, 41, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at his residence.

Born June 8, 1962, in Hempstead, Long Island, New York, he was the son of the late Mr. Joe Louis Walker and the late Mrs. Wilmenia Butler Walker. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed with Georgia Pacific for a number of years and later by Tufco Technologies of Manning.

Survivors include one son, Michael Tyrone Walker of Manning; two daughters, Latia Fleming of Virginia and Sonjewria Walker of Turbeville; three brothers, Johnnie (Debra) Butler of Camden, James Ledwell of Manning and Michael (Francena) Butler of Manning; two sisters, Betty Lloyd and Nicole Miller of Manning; six aunts; and one great-grandaunt.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Fleming & DeLaine Chapel in Manning. The Rev. Dr. Coakly Richburg officiated the service, assisted by Evangelist Diane Lee.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

James T. Spry
James Thomas “Buster” Spry, 79, husband of Janie Greene Spry, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center, Columbia.

Born Feb. 4, 1924, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Elder John Wesley Spry Sr. and Hattie Lee Simon Spry. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he was a member of Triumph the Church Kingdom of God of Christ, later joining Providence AME Church, serving as steward. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He was a member of Carter-Sullivan Post 204 American Legion for more than 50 years and a member of the Federation of Southern Cooperative.

Survivors, besides his wife, Janie G. Spry of the home, include two daughters, Pamela (Melvin) Prince and Laura E. Simon of Manning; one brother, George (Eva Mae) Spry of Manning; three sisters, Ruth Spry of Manning, Shirley Spry of Huntsville, Ala., and Darcus Spry of Asbury Park, N.J.; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter; three brothers, Richard Allen, Henry Lincoln and John Wesley; and two sisters, Alpha Lee Durant and Queen Esther Mitchell.

Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Providence AME Church, Mallette Road, Sugar Hill section of Manning. The Rev. Chris Ziegler, pastor, presiding, assisted by the Revs. Dr. Bennie Colclough, Dr. Cokley Richburg and the W.J. Frierson.

Burial followed in Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church Cemetery.

Henry Smith
Deacon Henry Smith, 74, son of the late Handy and Margaret Carter Smith, died on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born on May 18, 1925, he was employed by Williams Furniture Plant in Sumter for 30 years. At an early age, he joined Taw Missionary Baptist Church of Summerton. He served in many capacities in the church. He was also an ordained deacon and served his members faithfully until his health failed. He was a Bible scholar. He was united in holy matrimony to the late Annie Lee Brunson Smith. He was later married to Mrs. Theo P. Moore Smith. Fond and loving memories will be cherished and remembered by his devoted wife, children and grandchildren.

He leaves to cherish his memories one son, the Rev. Jonathan (Bertha) Smith of Summerton; four daughters, Stella (Hosie) Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Odether (Robert) Peguese of Thomasville, N.C., Willie Mae (Harry) Montgomery of Thomasville, N.C., and Retha (Ulysses) Thompson of Manning; five stepchildren, Nadine Moore, Cheryl Coleman, Loretta Walker, Jeffery Moore and Ronald Moore; one sister, Mrs. Mamie (Elijah) Flood of Baltimore; one aunt, Mrs. Lizzie Davis of Paxville; four brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Henry Smith Jr.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lula Smith Robinson
Lula Smith Robinson died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Jan. 2, 1927, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Aaron Canty and Inez Smith Bennett.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined New Hope UME Church in Pinewood and later moved her membership to St. Peter AME Church in Rimini.

Survivors include four sons, Ronnie Robinson of the home, Willie Earl Robinson of Manning, Simon Robinson of the Thomasville, N.C., Willie Robinson of Bronx, N.Y.; two daughters, Debra Traore of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Janet Gaymon of Pinewood; two sisters, Leila Bennett and Mary Thomas of Bronx, N.Y.; two brothers, Matthew Canty and Aaron Canty of Pinewood; seven step-children; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, in the chapel of Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton. The Rev. Larry Davis officiated the service.

Burial followed at Spring Grove Cemetery in Rimini.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals was in charge of arrangements.

Demetria Richardson
Demetria “Deni” Richardson, 34, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Feb. 24, 1969, in Manning, she was the daughter of Cynthia McFadden Richardson and the late Deacon James Richardson. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning High School, class of 1987 and attended Columbia Junior College. She was a member of Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church where she served on the youth choir. She was a member of “Sisters in Unity” and a volunteer for Breast Cancer-Best Chance Network.

Survivors, besides her mother of Manning, and her companion, Steve Conyers of the home, include two daughters, Trimeshia J. Richardson and Valeria J. Richardson, of the home; two brothers, James Richardson Jr. of New York, N.Y., and Gerald Richardson of Manning; three sisters, Sandra Conyers of Bridgeport, Conn., Tammy (John) Tomlin and Coretta (Bernard) Demery of Manning.

Services were held on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, Manning. The Rev. G.K. Carter, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Minister Derrick Bull.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.
