Virginia Renfro
Virginia Lee Murphy Renfro, 70, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 15, 1933 in Columbus, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Boone and Gayle Lucille Hamilton Murphy. She owned and operated Taw Caw Campground and attended Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Terri Lee Vacey Faerber of Manning; a son, Chet Vacey of Summerton; a sister, Wanda Culhane of Sumter; two brothers, James E. Murphy of Manning and Donald Murphy of Texas; and one granddaughter.

Services were held on Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Mike Murdoch officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 120 Wall St., 19th floor, New York, NY 10005.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Bishop Pinkney Ragin Jr.
Bishop Pinkney “Humppa” Aaron Ragin Jr., 85, husband of Annie Nelson Ragin, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1918, in Summerton, and was the son of the late Pinkney Ragin Sr. and Millie McBride Ragin.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton. He later moved his membership to Open Door Holiness Church where he served as a deacon. He was the founder and pastor of St. Paul Holiness Church until his health failed.

Survivors, besides his wife of the home, include four sons, Willie (Barbara) Ragin of Gable, Jonathan (Barbara) Ragin of Raeford, N.C., Robert (Anette) Ragin of Summerton, and John (Mary) Ragin of Akron, Ohio; four daughters and caregiver, Feria Ragin of the home, Daisy (Chester) Lawson and Kathy D. Ragin of Summerton, and Annie (Kenneth) McKenzie of Miami; one brother, Hampton (Teresa) of Lauelton, N.Y.; four sisters, Daisy R. Scarborough, Willene Rhames, Lillie (Sylvester) Smythe and Emma J. (Bobby) Hill of Summerton; 25 grandchildren; two nephews he reared as his own, Robert (Dorthy) Steven of Akron, Ohio, and Thomas and (Tracey) Ragin of Sumter; two grandchildren he reared as his own, Quantae Ragin of Sumter and Kathy Campbell of Manning.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John B., George H., and Robert F. Ragin, and a sister, Annie L. Purdie.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at My Father’s House Apostolic Church in Summerton. Bishop Raymond Holliday, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Pastor Esther Madison, Evangelist Willene Tindal, Evangelist Ella Jackson and Elder Eugene Johnson.

Burial followed in the St. Paul Holiness Church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Juanita Dorrell Cribb Hatchell
TIMMONSVILLE – Juanita Dorrell Cribb Hatchell, 88, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003.

Ms. Hatchell was born in Clarendon County, and was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Ann Miles Dorrell. She was a homemaker and a member of Sparrow Swamp Baptist Church.

Ms. Hatchell was first married to the late Carson Edward Cribb, then to the late William C. “Clyde” Hatchell.

Survivors include four sons, Randy (Debbie) Cribb of Timmonsville, Eddie (Dean) Cribb, Harry (Patsy) Cribb and Dan Cribb of Florence; one daughter, Karen Cribb of North Carolina; two daughters-in-law Anna Cribb and Barbara Cribb; one brother, Rembert “Jimpy” Dorrell of Timmonsville and one sister, Winnie Mae Knowlton of New Zion; three stepsons, George (Jennie) Hatchell of Timmonsville, Frank (Emily) Hatchell of Spartanburg, Mack (Annie Pearl) Hatchell of Knoxville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and 19 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Sam Cribb; three sisters, Vivian Bingham, Vera Stephens and Mintie Bazen; five brothers, Ralph, Walton, Pearlon, Olin and Archie; and one step-granddaughter, Eunice Hahn.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial followed in Sparrow Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sparrow Swamp Baptist Church Building Fund, 3234 South Hill Road, Timmonsville, S.C. 29161.

Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, of Florence, was in charge of the arrangements.

James Junious
James “Boy” Junious, 78, widower of Ernestine Parker Junious, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial in Columbia.

He was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Clarendon County, the son of Ralph Junious and Mary Robinson Junious.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Greater St. Phillip RUME Church. He was employed with Sunbeam Bakery’s Orangeburg plant and retired from the Town of Summerton.

Survivors include three sons, Ernest (LuAnn) Junious of Brooklyn, N.Y., James (Dottie) Canty, of Philadelphia, and Charlie Junious of the home; seven daughters, Hattie (Michel) Caul of Rosedale, N.Y., Margaret (Harold) Junious of Sumter, Ruth McQueen and Millie (Bernard) Johnson, both of Brooklyn, Barbara Mack and Carrie (LeRoy) Blackwell, all of Sumter; two brothers, Richard Canty and John (Rochelle) Canty, both of Philadelphia; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and an adopted daughter, Dorothy Ragin of Summerton.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Junious, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Greater St. Phillip RUME Church in Pinewood.

The Reverend Warren Hatcher officiated, assisted by the Reverend Amos Hatcher and presiding elder Malachi L. Duncan.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle B. Gibson
Myrtle Billups Gibson, 86, widow of James S. Gibson Sr., died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at her home.

Born in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Alphonzo W. Billups and the late Clara Bounds Billups. Mrs. Gibson was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two sons, James S. Gibson Jr. of Beaufort and Jack W. Gibson of Sumter; four daughters, Kathy Murdock of Columbia, Clara Ward of Nakina, N.C., Marie Beaver of Hurricane, W.Va., and Elaine Secrist of Winona, W.Va.; a brother, James T. Billups of Trussville, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 26, 2004, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen Taylor and the Rev. Phil Jones officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, S.C. 29150, or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline Bryant
Pauline Blackmon Hodge Bryant, widow of George A. Bryant Sr., died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Jan. 1, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Leance Hartsville and Rowena Frierson Blackmon. She was first married to the late Herbert “Bink” N. Hodge Sr. Mrs. Bryant was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Paulette Thames of Kingstree; four sons, Herbert N. Hodge Jr. and Harold G. Hodge Sr. of Sumter and George A. Bryant Jr. and Thomas Paul Bryant of Manning; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mildred Ann Witherspoon.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 26, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Pec Chatham and the Rev. Tommy Burgess officiating. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Viola S. Witherspoon
Mrs. Viola Smiling Witherspoon, 64, wife of Mr. Moultrie Edward Witherspoon, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at the McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born Sept. 5, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Mr. John Filbert Smiling and the late Magdalena Tindal Smiling. Mrs. Witherspoon attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Bethesda Baptist Church, where she sang with the choir and served as a deaconess and in numerous other capacities.

Survivors include two sons, Moultrie Witherspoon Jr. of Columbia and Sylvester (Annie) Samuels of Manning; six daughters, Viola Vivien (Fred) Fuller of Columbia, Carolyn (Reginald) Holloway of Columbia, Denise Coleman of Columbia, Glorus Witherspoon of Columbia, Mildred (Richard) Nick and Kwakiutl Witherspoon of Manning; three brothers, Deacon Gedine Smiling of Manning, the Rev. Al (Eyvonne) Smiling and Minister John Henry (Frances) Smiling of Sumter; five sisters, Ernestine (Leon) Pack of Gable, Eula Mae (Charles) Dozier of Manning, Everlena Smiling of Sumter, Rebecca (Pastor M. Louis) Lacey of Richmond, Va., and Gerdenia (Ralph) Sligh of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Services were held on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Bethesda Baptist Church in Sumter. The Revs. Andrew Jordan, Billy Graham, Al Smiling, evangelist Elizabeth Richburg and Dr. Coakley Richburg officiated the service.

Burial followed in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Patrick F. Veltre
Patrick Frank Veltre, 75, husband of the late Lillian Marguerite “Peg” Cole Veltre, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at Tuomey Regional Hospital.

Born Feb. 11, 1928, in Hillsville, Penn., he was the son of the late Bartolomeo and Rosa Rich Veltre. He graduated from Bessemer High School in 1946. He went on to college and graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He joined the USAF in July 1950 in which he served a 20-year tour of duty serving during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam and held his posts as commander and conductor of various Air Force bands in the US and overseas.

He was Chief Warrant Officer upon retiring. Military decorations include the National Defense Medal, the Outstanding Unit Award, the Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster and the Legion of Merit. After his Air Force retirement in 1970, he joined the music faculty of Sumter School District Two and served as a band director for 20 years. He earned a Master of Education degree from USC. Mr. Veltre retired from teaching in 1990, and from the Sumter Community Concert Band, Dec. 11, 1994. He served as Conductor Emeritus until May, 2003.

Survivors include three sons, Johnnie (Alice) Johnson of Atlanta, Robert A. “Bob” (Darlene) Veltre of Sumter and Joseph A. “Joe” (Nancy) Veltre of Myrtle Beach; one daughter, Karen V. (Michael) Stowe of Sumter; six grandchildren, Dennis Veltre, Amanda Close, Aaron Veltre, Rebecca Close, Adam Veltre and Tony Veltre and three great-grandchildren; Alex Veltre, Emily Veltre and Taylor Marie Veltre.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant grandchild, Patrick Veltre, four brothers, Anthony, Carman, Joseph and Bartolomeo Veltre and two sisters, Clara Scaraglino and Mary Parsons.

Funeral mass services were held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at St. Anne Catholic Church. Father Daniel J. Carboy, CSsR, officiated the service.

Burial followed, with full military honors, in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Anne Catholic Church, 216 E. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Lawrence F. Sherod
Lawrence Fredrick Sherod, 50, husband of Elloree Harvin Sherod, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born June 21, 1953, in Alcolu, he was the son of Mary Lou Sherod Fortune and the late John Felder and stepson of Isaac Fortune. He received his education in the public schools of New York, N.Y.

Survivors, besides his wife, Elloree H. Sherod of the home, include one son, Vernon Harvin of Sumter; one stepdaughter, Raunette Harvin of Sumter; six brothers, Charles Sherod of Newport, N.C., John (Tela Jo) Felder Jr. of Gaffney, Eugene (Darlene) Felder of Manning, Gregory (Jenny) Felder of Newport News, Va., Anthony (Carolyn) Felder of Florence and James (Carnetha) Felder of Lynchburg; two sisters, evangelist Gloria (Elder Joseph) Young and Artrelle (Michael) Felder of Manning; and one step-grandchild.

Services were held on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Fellowship Baptist Church. The Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Minister Jonathan Blackwell and evangelist Gloria Young.

Burial followed in Reeseville AME Churchyard Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
