Dennis D. Prescott
Dennis Dale Prescott, 51, husband of Darlene Ridgeway Prescott, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Hospital.

Born July 7, 1952, in Sumter, he was the son of Guy Henry Prescott and Louise Trimnal Prescott.

He was a member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as a member of the board and the United Methodist Men’s Club. He was also a member of the Still Hunting Club in the Concord Community and was employed by A&P Recycling.

Survivors, besides his wife and parents, include two daughters, Charlene P. (Josh) Peyton of Blythewood and Amanda L. Prescott and her fiancé, Jay Boykin of Sumter; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William R. and Pauline V. Ridgeway; a brother, Phil L. Prescott and Torrie of Sumter; a sister, Teresa (Bobby) Sandifer of Sumter; a granddaughter, Jaydin B. Peyton; nine brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; 16 loving nieces and nephews and 11 loving great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were held on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Lee Phillips and Jerry Watson officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Brunson Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Gene Windham Jr., Walt Ridgeway, T.J. Ridgeway, Benji Sandifer, Chris Cole and Sammy Prescott.

Memorials may be made to Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church, 3030 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter, SC 29153 or the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Eugene Nelson
Eugene “Gene” Nelson, 50, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.

Born Feb. 21, 1953, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, he was the son of Estell Pringle Nelson and the late Leon Nelson Sr. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and Scott’s Branch High School. In his youth, he attended Sunday school and worship services at St. James AME Church. In his youth, he worked as a farmer until he relocated to South Florida, where he was employed with the city of Miami.

Survivors, besides his mother, Estell P. Nelson of Davis Station, include seven brothers, Leon Nelson Jr., Thomas Nelson, Willie Nelson, Leroy Nelson, Stephen Nelson and Joel Nelson of Manning and Jerry (Yvette) Nelson of Fort Stewart, Ga.; and two sisters, Ethel Singleton and Jannie (Marion) Gamble of Manning.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Nelson.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at St. James AME Church. The Rev. R.L. Brown, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Ronnie Brown and evangelist Sarah Miller.

Burial followed in Mt. Zion AME Church Cemetery, Summerton.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Jean Collins White
Carolyn Jean Collins White, 62, wife of Joseph Lawrence White, Jr., died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born in Horry County, she was the daughter of the late Major Collins and the late Emma Baker Collins.

Survivors, besides her husband, include three daughters, Denise Stone of Manning, Deanna Fort and Penny Floyd of Sumter; a son, Bill White of Statesville, N.C.; two brothers, Earl Collins of Georgetown and Marvin Collins of Murrells Inlet; three sisters, Bernice Cullepher of Thompsonville, N.C., Geraldine Cannon of St. Stephens, and Deanna Smart of Plumb Branch; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Deborah Anderson and Marvette Youmans.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. The Rev. Bobby Driggers officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

Victoria T. Durant
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mrs. Victoria Tindal DuRant, 66, widow of Mr. Carroll B. DuRant, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

Born March 21, 1937, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Cleveland Tindal and the late Mrs. Ethel Richburg Tindal. Mrs. DuRant attended the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from the Manning Training School. For a number of years, she was a member of the senior choir. Later she joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Manning. Victoria traveled extensively with her husband throughout his military career.

Survivors include two sons, Lemuel (Kim) DuRant of Tacoma, Wash., and Chris DuRant of Fayetteville, N.C.; two daughters, Cynthia DuRant of Nashville, Tenn., and Sharon DuRant (Tony) Evans of Cary, N.C.; four brothers, Admiral (Liza Ann) Tindal and Alonzo (Laverne) Tindal of Manning, Cleveland (Sarah) Tindal of Baltimore, and Jimmy Tindal of Texas; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Tindal (Albert) Brown of Paxville; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Julia Lee Tindal Blanding.

Services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Mt. Zero Baptist Church. The Revs. Henry Presley and Dr. Coakley Richburg officiated the service.

Burial followed in Mt. Zero Baptist Church Cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Willie Mae S. Thompson
Evangelist Willie Mae Stukes Thompson, 55, widow of the Rev. James Thompson Jr., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at 2950 Doc Naomi Road, Manning.

Born Feb. 13, 1948, in the Bloomville section of Manning, she was the daughter of the late Willie “Budda” Stukes and Mabelle Young Stukes. She was a 1966 graduate of Manning Training School and attended classes at Miami Dade Community College and Sumter Area Technical College. She retired after 20 years of service with the city of Miami Police Department. Currently, she was employed with the Clarendon County Magistrate Office. She was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as the trustee secretary, Bible study teacher, past superintendent of Sunday school, past vice-president of missionary society, past president of the kitchen committee, recording secretary and announcer for the United Freewill Association.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Allen Thompson and the Rev. James Henry (Sharonda) Thompson, both of Miami; one daughter, Katrina Michelle Thompson of Manning; five brothers, Harold Williams, Wilbert Stukes, George A. (Eleanor) Stukes and Johnny Stukes of Manning, and Raymond Pearson of Summerton; three sisters, Floreen Simon, Hester Brogdon and Geraldine (Amos) Henry of Manning; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church. Elder Shelley Hickson, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Elders M.R. Singletary, James McFarland and Kenneth Gibson.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

David Canty
FLORENCE – David Canty, 56, died Jan. 14, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born July 18, 1947, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Tal and Janie Fleming Canty. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1964 graduate of Lincoln High School. He furthered his education at Morris College, where he received a liberal arts degree. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and worked as a substitute teacher for Sumter County School District 2 and later for Zimco. In his youth, he attended Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four children, Latonja D. James and Kevin T. Canty of Sumter, Keith D. Dukes of Manning and Sade Richardson of Woon, R.I.; two sisters, Annette Johnson and Janett (Joseph) Johnson of the home; four grandchildren; a special friend, Ruth Jackson of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Rosetta Canty.

Services were held Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Willie Wilson, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Eliza E. Black and Randolph Black.

Job’s Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Willie M. Farmer
Willie Mae Farmer, 81, widow of David Farmer, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Mariner Health East.
Born on Oct. 2, 1922, in the Live Oak section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late William and Agnes Mae Butler Samuel. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member until her health failed.

Survivors include four sons, David (Elizabeth) Samuel, Frankie Lee (Mary) Samuel and Joseph (Cathy) Samuel of Sumter; and William (Darlene) Samuel of Pompano, Fla.; three daughters, Minnie Pearl Johnson of Paxville, Rebecca (Larry) Parrott and Agnes M. (H. McMillian Jr.) Jennings of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Phoebe L. Sweatte of Sumter; a best friend, Minnie Washington of Manning; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a grandson, James Ottis Randolph Jr., a sister, Minnie McClain; and a stepbrother, Calvin Sweatte.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Leon Winn officiated the service, assisted by Pastors Tommy Frederick, Angela Frederick and Minister Emma Jane Jones.

Burial followed in Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Services Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Junie S. Floyd
Junie Strickland Floyd, 70, widow of Napoleon Ollie Floyd, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at the home of her son, Chris Floyd, 914 Wisteria Way, Sumter.

Born June 1, 1933, in Olanta, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Monroe and Ella Miles Strickland. She was formerly employed by East Clarendon Cafeteria and by Southern Methodist Day Care. She was a member of Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Miriam (Ben) Strickland of Scranton and Marie (Herbert) Mozingo of Bishopville; four sons, Charles (Jane) Strickland of Kingstree, Kenny (Elaine) Floyd of New Zion, Danny Floyd of Turbeville and Chris (Wendi) Floyd of Sumter; a sister, Wilhemina Flowers of Scranton; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Gladys Pressley of Gable.

She was preceded in death by a son, J.M. Strickland.

Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Rev. Legrande Taylor officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Clyde Bagnal.

Burial followed in Pine Dale Cemetery.

James Hester Jr.
SUMMERVILLE – James Bert Hester Jr., 81, husband of Mari Jon Hester, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at a Charleston hospital.

Mr. Hester was born on July 18, 1922 in Clarksville, Tenn., the son of James Bert Hester Sr. and Tyson Lowder Hester. He was a retired US Air Force Lt. Colonel, retired from Civil Service and a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member and past president of the Exchange Club, a Mason and master gardener.

Survivors, besides his wife, include two sons, James M. Hester of Georgetown and John D. Hester of Summerville; one brother, Charles Robert Hester of Manning; three grandchildren, John D. Hester, Peyton Hester and Wyatt Hester; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Jan. 17, 2004, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Summerville. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Coastal Carolina Chapter, P.O. Box 80459, Charleston, S.C. 29416-0459 or to the American Heart Association, 409 King Street, Charleston, S.C.
