Mattie Doris Jenkinson Lowery
After a joyful and fruitful life of 75 years, Mattie Doris Jenkinson Lowery of Manning, widow of Chester LaVerne (Bob) Lowery, departed this life on January 16, 2004, and entered her heavenly home.

Born near Pinewood, Oct. 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Marion Delmar and Mattie Broughton Jenkinson. She lived in Summerton for most of her life, and was a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a faithful and loving wife, mother and grandmother who was totally devoted to her family. In addition to being a homemaker, she held a variety of jobs outside the home, including providing homemade lunches for Clarendon Hall students during the early years of the school. Mrs. Lowery also worked in banking and, along with her husband, owned and operated the Garden City Supermarket at Garden City Beach for a number of years.

Survivors include two sons, Robert L. “Bobby” (Elaine) Lowery of Sumter and Mark J. (Byrlene) Lowery of Summerton; three daughters, Jeannie L. (Tommy) Wilson of Alcolu, Patti L. (Les) Odom Sumter and Suzy L. (Jim) Slice of McDonough, Ga.; seventeen grandchildren, Jimmy Lowery, Danny Lowery, John Lowery, Donald Lowery, Mark Lowery, Jr., Kim Lowery, Jill W. Hickson, Reese Wilson, Cameron Wilson, Neil Masincupp, Ginger M. Leeman, Becky M. Marlowe, Malachi Slice, David Slice, Jimbo Slice, John Slice, and Joseph Slice; eight great-grandchildren, James Lowery, Maggie Lowery, Michael Lowery, Sarah Lowery, Jacob Lowery, Treston Lowery, Lily Leeman and Emma Leeman; two brothers, Johnny Jenkinson and Bill Jenkinson of Summerton; one sister, Betty J. Keels of Pinewood; and one sister-in-law, Ida E. Jenkinson of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by one brother, M. Delmar Jenkinson, Jr.

Mrs. Lowery chose to donate her body to the USC School of Medicine in Columbia.

Memorial services were held Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church. The Reverend Benjamin T. Barwick, Jr. officiated the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607; Harvin Clarendon County Library, 215 North Brooks Street, Manning, S.C. 29102; or to a charity of one’s choice.

Lillie Mae Pearson
Lillie Mae Pearson, 77, widow of James “Jimmy” Pearson Sr., died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 27, 1926, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Rebecca Celia Johnson. She attended the public schools of Sumter County. She was a lifelong member of Pearson Chapel AME Church, president of the Missionary Society, Mother of the Church, treasurer and secretary.

Survivors include six sons, J.C. (Susie) Pearson, Thomas Pearson, Clary (Melissa) Pearson, Christopher (Rhonda) Pearson and Ike Pearson of Sumter, and David (Rosa) Pearson of Manning; two daughters, Janie Lee Williams and Loretta (Ed) Loyd of Sumter; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth Sweat of Sumter; two daughters-in-law, Carolyn and Joyce Pearson of Sumter; one stepbrother, Henry (Fannie) English of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Catherine Pearson of Sumter; two grandchildren she reared in her home, Orlando Coullette and Laquetta Pearson of Sumter; 28 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, James “Bubba” Pearson and Clarence Pearson.

Services were held on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church. The Revs. M.G. Walters and Leon Winn, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Willie A. Wright, James Cooper and Mary Hamilton.

Burial followed in Pearson Chapel AME Church Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Norman Ragin
Mr. Norman Ragin, 89, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility, Silver.

Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late June Ragin and Mary Richardson Ragin. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton.

Survivors include a special devoted cousin, Mary Ragin Singleton of Summerton; three nieces, Mrs. Mary Logan of Sumter, Mrs. Bessie Harris of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Leola Conyers of New York City; along with a host of nephews, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Services were held on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Liberty Hill AME Church. The Rev. Capers, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Elliott M. Robbins
AIKEN – Elliott Matthew Robbins, 52, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at his residence, 201 North Gate Circle, Aiken.

Born Jan. 25, 1951, in Rock Hill, he was the son of the late Matthew Robbins and Ida Worthy Robbins. He graduated from Rock Hill High School and Friendship Junior College, Rock Hill. He also attended Benedict College in Columbia.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine Robbins and Elizabeth Robbins; one son, Elliott Robbins Jr.; three brothers, Worthy (Emma) Robbins Sr. of Manning, James F. Robbins of Columbia and Marion Robbins of Clover; and eight sisters, Minnie (Roosevelt) Kendrick, Doris June, Mamie Phillips, Christine Leach and Francis Williams of Clover, Jean Jones of Detroit, Cleophus Barnes of New York City and Mary Elizabeth Robbins of Catawba.

Services were held on Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, in Manning. The Revs. Leroy Green, Northern Miller and evangelist Debbie Miller officiated the service.

Burial followed in St. Mark Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Thames
PATERSON, N.J. – Charles Thames, husband of Sally Sawyer Thames, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in Paterson, N.J.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late Genie and Bessie Pugh Thames. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Sara S. Thames of Sumter; three brothers, Genie (Cookie) Thames Jr. and Jacob Thames of Paterson, N.J.; and Esau (Queenie) Thames of Manning; and four sisters, Bessie G. Walters of Summerton, Hattie (Clyde) M. Holliday of Darlington, Annie Lee Thames of Manning and Gladys B. Thames of Baltimore.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Willie J. Thames Sr.

Services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, in the Chapel of Carnie P. Bragg Funeral Homes Inc., 256 Rosa Parks Blvd., Paterson, N.J.

Rose Tomlinson
Rose Marie Coker Tomlinson, 59, widow of the late Joel G. Tomlinson, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at a Florence hospital.

Born in Turbeville, she was the daughter of Edith Driggers Coker and the late Carlisle R. Coker. She was a member of Manning First Baptist Church and the manager of the deli at the Piggly Wiggly in Manning.

Survivors, besides her mother of Manning, include one daughter, Edith T. (Walt) Terolli of Waterbury, Conn.; three sisters, Mary Frances Jackson, Lois C. Harvin and Brenda Gayle Coker of Manning; four brothers, Raymond Coker of Denmark, Glenn Coker of Moncks Corner, Jerry and Rick Coker of Manning; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens. The Revs. Carey McElveen and Danny Bridges officiated the services.

Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 120 Wall St., 19th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10005.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Edith C. Turbeville
Mrs. Edith C. Turbeville, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in a Florence nursing home after an illness.

Born in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Coleman and Annie Elizabeth Hyman Coleman. She was a devoted member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, the Ladies Bible Class, the W.M.U. and the American Legion Auxillary.

Survivors include a son, Elbert K. “Kim” (Retta) Turbeville of Lake City; two granddaughters, Amanda T. (Eric) Taylor of W. Columbia, and Kelly Turbeville of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Patrick Turbeville.

Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 144, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Hallie O’Marie T. Way
Hallie O’Marie Tarleton Way, 78, wife of Deacon John Edward Way, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 7, 1925, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late Butler Julian and Hallie Stokes Tarleton. She received her education in the Clarendon and Sumter County school districts. At an early age, she joined the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as president of the Usher Ministry, Sunday school teacher, president of the L&H Club, member of the Deaconess Ministry and other various committees. After 15 years of service, she retired from Campbell Soup. She attended the Paxville Community Development Center, where she was a member of the senior citizen program and served as a foster grandparent.

Survivors, besides her husband, include six children, Adrinna L. Buckman of New York, N.Y., Edward G. Way of Denver, Colo., Phyllis Way of Sumter, George B. (Mary) Way and Tarleton (Loretta) Way of Paxville and Charlotte “Rita” Nesbitt of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Barry, Kemet, Donyale, Robert, Dwight, Alonzo and Antwaun “Twanie;” nine great-grandchildren, Todd, Michael, Sheena, Courtney C., Courtney G., Kibwe, Lillian, Dwight Jr. and Desmond; one great-great-grandchild, Makkah; one aunt, Tallie Stokes of Manning; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Vashti Singleton, Louise Houston and Dorothy Blackwell; and two brothers, William Butler Tarleton and John Richard Tarleton.

Services were held on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Paxville. The Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Roosevelt McFadden, E.L. Sanders and Richard Dyson.

Burial followed in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Charles A. Avin
FLORENCE – Charles Aubrey Avin, 68, of 2417 S. Purvis Drive, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in a Florence hospital, after an illness.

Mr. Avin was born in Pinewood, S.C., a son of the late Perry and Maggie Johnson Avin. He was a retired truck driver from SoCAr after 18 years of service. Mr. Avin was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, fisherman, baseball coach, truck driver and just a good man.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce A. Avin of the home; three sons, Marty Avin of Greensboro, N.C., Chris (Tracy) Avin of Florence, David (Tressa) Avin of Edenton, N.C.; one daughter, Carol (Bill) Carleson of Nashville, Tenn.; three brothers, P.M. (Nellie) Avin and Wallace (Martha Ann) Avin both of Florence, and Joe (Kenny) Avin of Summerton; two sisters, Lois Hobbs of Dallas and Ruth (Coleman) Stoke of Laurens; seven stepchildren, Kent Gray of Tennessee, Cindy (Bryan) Irvin of North Carolina, Van (Lisa) Johnson, Lisa (Tony) Miles, Lynn (Andy) Welch and Laura Johnson all of Pamplico, and Leslie J. (Thomas) Brooks of Florence; seven grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Avin, and a sister, Gladys Tony.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in the chapel of Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
