Charles M. Barrett
Charles M. “Dick” Barrett, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Nov. 14, 1915, in Manning, he was a son of the late Charlie Bass and Mary Lloyd Barrett. He was a retired civil service commissary clerk at Shaw Air Force Base, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are four sisters, Margaret Windham of Florence, Mary E. Tennant of Sumter, Grace Hodge of St. Matthews and Dorothy Coker of Alcolu; two brothers, Harry E. Barrett of Manning and Willis C. Barrett of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Carey McElveen and Morris Smith officiating. Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Lucy Mae R. Alsbrook
Lucy Mae Ridgeway Alsbrook, 92, widow of George Hardy Alsbrook, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born June 22, 1911, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late George and Hester Corbett Ridgeway. She was formerly employed by Manning Manufacturing and was a member of Jordan United Methodist Church.

Surviving are five daughters, Lila (Bill) Ellis, Margaret Ardis, Pansy (Billy) Beatson, all of Manning, Jeanette (Lee) Lowder of Pinewood, Angela (Harold) Hodge of Sumter; two sons, Marvin (Mary) Alsbrook and Raymond (Barbara) Alsbrook of Manning; a brother, Percy (Ann) Ridgeway of St. Matthews; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 21, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Miriam Hadden, Charlie Salter and Pec Chatham officiated.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150, or to Jordan United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Colleen Bochette, Treasurer, 2048 Bethleham Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Marie Johnson
BISHOPVILLE – Marie Johnson died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Claudie Davis and Wilhelmenia Bracey. She attended the public schools of Lee County. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Joe Johnson of Bishopville, Henry Johnson of Columbia and Johnny Johnson of Summerton; daughters, Lillie Mae (Joe) Spann of Philadelphia, Wilhelmenia (Malachi) Reames of Bishopville, Elouise Wright of Bishopville, Isabelle Durant of Bishopville, Mary Lee Holmes of Winston-Salem, Ruby Nell (Robert) Wilson of Bishopville, Jeannette (Jimmy) Miller of Bishopville and Sylvia (Robert) Cook of Bishopville; one brother, Sammie Bracey of Bishopville; three sisters, Rosa Mae (Elijah) Pringle of Sumter, Willie Belle Smith of Bishopville and Abby Lee Williams of Linden, N.J.; 46 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Jerusalem Stuckey Baptist Church with the Rev. Julia Sanders officiating.

Burial was in Jerusalem Stuckey Cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville was in charge of the arrangements.

Lila Mae M. Butler
Mrs. Lila Mae McKnight Butler, 54, wife of Mr. Tarlton Butler, died May 24, 2004, at her residence.

Born Aug. 7, 1949, in Bloomville County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Benjamin McKnight Sr. and Mrs. Elouise McDonald McKnight. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church and was director of the youth choir and youth department. Lila was also a professional seamstress for a number of years.

Survivors include one brother, Isaac McKnight of Manning; two sisters, Hazel (Norman) Moorer of Manning and Louise (Lawrence) Bennett of Manning.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Johnson; and three brothers, Luther, Kinley and Benjamin Jr.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 28, 2004, at St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville community, with the Revs. Otis Wright, Dr. Coakley Richburg, Elder James Leach, Calvin Burgess, Effie Hilton and evangelist Elizabeth Richburg officiating.

Burial was in Mt. Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Jordan community.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Jessie Rose Harvin
HENDERSON, N.C. – Jessie Rose Harvin of Henderson, N.C., died peacefully at her home Saturday, May 29, 2004.

Born Jessie Myrick Rose on Jan. 16, 1916, in Henderson, she was the daughter of the late Paul H. Rose and Emma Myrick Rose. Her father founded Rose’s Stores in 1915 and served as chairman of the corporation until his death in 1955.

Mrs. Harvin attended local schools in Henderson as well as Gunston Hall in Washington, D.C., and Sweet Briar College. She graduated from Martha Washington Seminary in Virginia.

She was married to the late Lucius Herman Harvin Jr. of Manning, S.C. on March 8, 1938. The couple had five children, Lucius Herman Harvin III, Paul Rose Harvin, George Myrick Harvin, Jessie Rose Harvin and Emma Katherine Harvin.

In addition to her successful role as wife and mother, Mrs. Harvin was active in family business and the community. She served as president of Emrose Corporation, a real estate development company, from 1937 to 1995 and as president of HHC Co. Inc., a real estate development company, from 1989 to 1997. Mrs. Harvin was chairman of the 1988 Capital Campaign for the Henderson Family YMCA, responsible for raising the funding for the community’s first indoor pool and full-service recreational facility. She was a charter member of Contemporary Book Club, a lifelong member of the Henderson Garden Club, and a generous contributor to local organizations and charities. Mrs. Harvin was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Henderson and served on numerous women’s circles.

Mrs. Harvin and her husband were major contributors to the Harvin Clarendon County Library.

Mrs. Harvin is survived by her children, Lucius Herman (Rebecca) Harvin III of Henderson, George Myrick (Agnes) Harvin of Henderson, Rose Harvin (Walker) Long of Chapel Hill and Emma Harvin Currigan of Wilmington; and by her grandchildren, Emma Katherine Louisa Currigan, Jessie Rose Madison Currigan, Paul Rose Harvin, Samuel Thorne (Julie) Harvin, Rebecca Harvin (Edwin) Wotz, Virginia Harvin (Thomas) Pitler, Lucius Herman (Ellen) Harvin IV; her step-grandchildren, Joshua Forrest Pescud (Boyd) Long, Dr. Millie Dascomb Long (Alfred) Barritt, Hadley Pirkko Long; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Kitty Sue Harvin Bullock of Sumter and Margaret Barnwell Harvin of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucius Herman Harvin Jr., by her son Paul Rose Harvin, and by her sisters Virginia Rose, Emma Rose Church and Alice Rose Vaughan.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Henderson with the Rev. Richard Brand.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, the elevator fund, P.O. Box 726, Young St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Welvin Parson
Welvin Parson, 72, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at 123 W. Huggins St., Manning.

Born Jan. 1, 1932, in Manning, he was a son of Rufus Rutledge Parson and Agnes Hilton Parson. He joined Trinity AME Church during his youth. He was educated at Manning Training School. He was employed as a commercial and residential painter. He was a member of Ram Bay Hunting Club.

Survivors include five sons, Curtis (Sue) Johnson of Morristown, Pa., Roger Parson, Kenneth Jones, Jeffery Jones, all of Summerton, and Sherman Jones of Manhattan, N.Y.; a nephew he took as a son, Fladger (Juanita) Parson of Manning; one daughter, Cynthia V. Jones of Manning; two nieces he took as his daughters, Janet Parson of Manning and Cynthia (Eric) Spencer of Rochester, N.Y.; a devoted friend, Edith Martin of Manning; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 21, 2004, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiating.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Deacon Willie James Seals
Deacon Willie James Seals Sr., 89, widower of Eloise Bickerson Seals, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

He was born Sept. 16, 1914, in the Zoe Hill community of Clarendon County the son of the late Elijah Seals and Florence Richburg Seals.

He was baptized at a young age at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning. After moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., he joined and was ordained a deacon of Bethany Baptist Church of Brooklyn. He later served as vice chairman of the board of deacons at Bethany Baptist Church, David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning. He retired after 34 years with New York City Transit Authority. He served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard and the U.S. Air Force Reserves and retired after 20 years of service.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Willie James Seals Jr. of Rochester, N.Y.; two adopted sons, William F. Faines Jr. of Bronx, N.Y., and Gary (Mary) Faines of Brockton, Mass.; two daughters, Dr. Florence J. Cherry of Ithaca, N.Y., and JoAnn Seals of Queens, N.Y.; a special daughter, Suzanne Gist; and two sisters, O’Neal Mariner of Oceanside, Calif., and Josephine White of Westbury, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lee Ernest, Alver, Leroy and Lincoln Seals.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Jerry L. Prince
Jerry Leroy Prince, 81, died May 19, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 13, 1922, in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Sammy Whack and Alma Davis Prince and stepson of the late Isaac Prince. He received his formal education at Goodwill School in Manning. In his youth, he joined Holly Hill Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Latana Roofing Co. in West Palm Beach, Fla., as a roofer.

Survivors include four sons, Leroy (Frances) Prince Jr. of Baltimore, Roosevelt (Barbara) Prince of Lantana, Fla., Thomas Prince of Sumter and Willie (Juliette) Prince of Sumter; eight daughters, Florence (Joseph) Kinder of Norwalk, Conn., Frances (Bishop Willie M.) Allen of Cario, Ga., Elizabeth (Leslie “Snoody”) Heyward of Manning, Rhunette (Charlie) Johnson of Rochester, N.Y., Dorothy Ann Prince of Hollywood, Fla., Joann (Howard) Wilson and Louise Prince, both of Manning, and Francine (Kenneth) Johnson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; several grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, a daughter and a son.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Fourth Crossroad Missionary Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. G.K. Carter, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sam W. Whack Jr., the Rev. Henry McCray and Bishop Willie M. Allen.

Burial was in Hunter Cemetery.

Elouise Stuckey
Elouise Stuckey, 48, companion of Ivy Lee Pearson of the home, died May 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born April 21, 1956, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Mae Bell Moses Stuckey and James C. Stuckey Sr. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. She was currently employed by Lee County Disabilities and Special Needs Board as supervisor of ICF/MR McCleod II residential home. She was a valued employee for 17 years. She was a faithful member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, Lynchburg.

Survivors include three sons, Darryl (Shalonda) Stuckey of Bishopville, Lashad and Rashad Stuckey of the home; two stepsons, Laverne Pearson and Gregg Pearson, both of Turbeville; one foster daughter, Chantel Bailey of the home; three stepdaughters, Ivory Jane McFadden, Monique Pearson and Marie Pearson, all of Turbeville; three brothers, Larry (Catherine) Stuckey and James Stuckey Jr. of Rembert and Nuegene (Tonya) Stuckey of North Carolina; five sisters, Charlesena (James) King of Elliott, Jennifer Donald and Brenda (Mark) Percy of Columbia, Mae Alice (Sam) McGruder of Rembert, Lisa Stuckey of Bishopville; one adopted sister, Nancy Cornish of Columbia; and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Mae Bell Moses Stuckey and James C. Stuckey; and her daughter, Tara Quines Stuckey Ford.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Mt. Pleasant Middle School, Elliott, with the Rev. Robert L. Rabb, officiating eulogist, assisted by Minister Eric Stuckey, the Rev. Mary Ruth Harvin and the Rev. J. Elbert Williams.

Burial was in New Jerusalem Church Cemetery, Lynchburg.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
