Barbara Ann Brunson
Barbara Ann Brunson, 40, died May 25, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born July 20, 1963, in Summerton, she was a stepdaughter of Morris Jones and daughter of the late Rosa Brunson Jones. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1981 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School, Summerton. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Mt. Pleasant UME Church, where she served faithfully until her health failed. She was employed at Santee Resort.

Survivors include her stepfather, Morris Jones of Summerton; two brothers, Eddie Lee and Abraham Brunson of White Plains, N.Y.; four sisters, Daisy (Henry) White of New York, N.Y., Betty (Anthony) Webb of Summerton, Mary Jane (Joseph) Gunter of Brown Mill, N.J., Elanora Adams of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by a brother, George “Shakey” Brunson.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Mt. Pleasant UME Church, Panola community, Pinewood, with the Rev. James Robinson, pastor, assisting the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd, and presiding Revs. Bobby McDonald, David Lawson and Johnathan Smith.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

National Burgess
National “Carl” Burgess, a loving son of the late Occie Burgess of Manning and Willie Mullins of Mullins, and was born on February 28, 1943, in Marion County of Mullins.

On Thursday, May 20, 2004, at 7 a.m., God sent his angels Nellie, Susie Mae, Patricia, Mary Ellen, Wilma, Randy and nephews Rickey and Anthony, to come and bring him home to rest.

He is survived by two sons, Deacon Carl Wesley (Yvette) Burgess, Nathaniel Earl (Darlene) Burgess, and after his marital separation, he was also blessed with a daughter, Caroline; two grandchildren, Christal Schavonna Burgess, and Shateria Marguerite Burgess. He is survived also by his sisters, Zelda Ellerba and Mary Lou Pittman, both of Manning; half-brothers and -sisters, Kate, Bessie, Blondell, Cliff and Jack; and his brother-in-law, Silas “Spank” Blanding; and host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services were at the church on Monday, May 24, 2004, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Henry Pressley assisted Bishop Richard Johnson, who officiated.

Lucille Farmer
BISHOPVILLE – Lucille Farmer, 76, wife of Johnny C. Farmer, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late George Caples and the late Mary Brown Caples. She attended Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church at Browntown and was retired from Bishopville Manufacturing.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Alice Farmer and Ann Farmer, both of Bishopville; four sons, Douglas (Crystal) Farmer of Hartsville, Marvin (Ronda) Farmer of Alcolu, Donald (Elaine) Farmer of Bishopville and Art (Bonnie) Farmer of Bishopville; a brother, Jack (Mary) Caples of Bishopville; and 13 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Jackson; and two brothers, Arthur “Bubba” Caples and Ed Caples; and a grandson, Perry Munn.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 30, 2004, in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Wilt officiating.

Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery at Browntown.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville was in charge of arrangements.

Lella Mae Merchant Nelson
Lella Mae Merchant Nelson, 65, wife of the late Jeremiah Nelson, died May 26, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

She was born April 11, 1939, in Clarendon County the daughter of the late Peter “Sonny” and Ida Mae James Merchant.

She was educated in the schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she worshiped at the Mt. Calvary Fire Baptize Holiness Church in Manning. Then, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and pursued a career as a nursing attendant for many years. After retirement, she returned to Manning and united herself with Trinity A.M.E. Church. Lella Mae was a very nice, caring and giving person. She gave her heart and love to everyone who came in contact with her.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Lee (Reginald) Hunter, and Mrs. Annie Mae (Nathaniel) Edmondson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Mr. Henry (Barbara) Merchant of Columbia; a loving special niece, Caroline (Jerome) Brown of Blacksville, S.C.; several aunts and uncles and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and special friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 31, 2004, at Trinity A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough officiating.

Blackwell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Parson
Alice Parson, 78, died May 21, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Jan. 12, 1925, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Parson Sr. and Agnes Hilton. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She joined Trinity AME Church at an early age. She was an avid supporter of the Manning “Monarch” High School athletic program, attending all football and basketball games.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Parson of the home and Cynthia (C. Eric) Spencer of Rochester, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Eric S. (Andrea) Spencer of Rochester, N.Y., and Lakisha Spencer of Columbia; three great-grandchildren, Brooke, Isaiah and Amiyah, all of Rochester, N.Y.; a devoted nephew and niece, Fladger and Juanita Parson of Manning; a devoted caretaker, Sarah Lee Anderson of Manning; and two very close friends, Edith Martin and Diane Blanding, both of Manning.

She was preceded in death by one sister and seven brothers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Trinity AME Church, with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Ashley Vaughn, the Rev. W.J. Frierson and the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg.

Shirley Ridgeway
Shirley Ann Lowder Ridgeway, 63, wife of James Furman Ridgeway Sr., died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 22, 1940, in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late David McQuin and Mattie Barnes Lowder. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Davis Station.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are three sons, Jimmy (Missy) Ridgeway of Manning, David (Kathy) Ridgeway of Port Barre, La., and Chris Ridgeway of Manning; two sisters, Judy Haley and Gloria Lowder of Manning; three brothers, Jack Lowder of Wilson, Sam Lowder of Gable and Pete Lowder of Manning; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 27, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Miriam Hadden officiating.

Burial followed in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Davis Station.

Memorials may be made to the Shirley Ridgeway Memorial Fund of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Gladys Griffin, 1372 White Oak Drive, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Emma F. Tomlin
Emma Franklin Tomlin, 88, widow of Charlie Tomlin Sr., died May 18, 2004, in Alcolu.

Born in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Guy Benjamin Franklin and Lizzie Myers Franklin. She received her education in the Westminister School in Alcolu. She gave her life to Christ and joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, where she served faithfully. She was a member of the usher board, senior choir, missionary society and mother of the church. She was also a member of the YMCA Lodge, Joint Stock Lodge, Farmers Aide and Job Lodge. She also ran the Franklin & Tomlin Grocery Store for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Charlie (Althenia) Tomlin Jr. of Alcolu and Thomas (Sarah) Tomlin of New Haven, Conn.; three daughters, Katie (William) Walters of Alcolu, Lizzie Kelly of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Wilhelmenia Tomlin of Norwalk, Conn.; two sisters, Lillie Francis and Queen Monroe, both of Alcolu; two brothers, Robert (Bessie) Blackwell and Alonza (Bertha) Blackwell, both of Sumter; 22 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by eight sisters, two brothers, and two children, Ulysses Franklin and Otis Tomlin.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis C. Brock, pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Jonathan Anderson, Steven Hodge and Minister Terry Franklin.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Rachel A. Ballard
BALTIMORE – Rachel A. Ballard, 89, widow of Henry Ballard, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Manor Care in Baltimore.

She was born March 25, 1915, in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Clarendon County the daughter of the late James Dukes and Julia Hammett.

She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and joined Mt. Zion AME Church in her youth. After moving to Baltimore, she joined John Wesley Methodist Church, serving as an usher. Later, she moved her membership to Lewin United Methodist Church, serving on the senior usher board and a member of the Methodist women. She was a retired employee of London Fog.

Survivors include one son, Eugene Ballard; one daughter Irene Dingle; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Historical Mt. Zion AME Church in Summerton.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Dr. Willie J. Heggins II, pastor, officiated.

Flander Frierson
Flander “Bogan” Frierson, 78, husband of Lee Haley Frierson, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at his home in Manning.

Born February 20, 1926, in Manning, he was the son of the late Arthur and Emma Hamilton Frierson. He was a retired construction worker, a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII, and a member of Clarendon Church of God.

Surviving, besides his wife of Manning, are two daughters, Janice Carter and Maxine Ridgeway of Manning; three sons, James, Jerry and Marion Frierson, all of Manning; a brother, Eddie Frierson of Sumter; seven sisters, Lee White, Alma Mitchum, Tanner Wilson, Rebecca Rolland and Letha Fleming of Manning, Pansy Stewart of Dublin, Ga. and Betty Mixon of Columbia; sixteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Reverend Ronnie Newton officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 1116 Falling Road, Manning.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Church of God, P.O. Box 387, Manning, S.C. 29102.
