Lonnie Flood
Lonnie Flood, 74, husband of Shirley Martin Flood, died March 30, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Sept. 8, 1929, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Henry “Sonny” Flood and Flory Belser Flood. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Liberty Hill AME Church. After moving to New York City, he joined Universal Hagar’s Spiritual Church. He was a retired auto mechanic.

Survivors besides his wife of the home, Shirley M. Flood, include one son, Martin Flood of Laurel, Md.; two daughters, Lorraine Dow of Bronx, N.Y., and Evangelist Patricia (the Rev. Dr. William) Best of Middleton, N.Y.; other children include Tanya Jay, Jamal Jay, Tamika Jay, Jermain Jay and Eric Jay, all of Bronx, N.Y.; one sister, Rosa Davis-Biden of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 11 siblings.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Dr. William Best officiated, assisted by Dr. Eugene Canty and the Rev. Melvin Capers.

Burial was in Liberty Hill AME Church cemetery in Summerton.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

George Brunson
George “Ervin” Brunson, 51, of Summerton, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at his residence.

Born Oct. 3, 1952, in Clarendon County, he was a stepson of Morris Jones and the late Rosena Brunson Jones. He attended Scott’s Branch High School. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church. In later years, he moved to White Plains, N.Y. He was employed by Mayflower Moving Transportation Co. After retirement, he returned back to Summerton, where he reunited with his home church, Mt. Pleasant UME Church. He was a member of the Community Hunting Club, where he was an advocate of sports.

Survivors include two brothers, Eddie Lee Brunson and Abraham Brunson, both of White Plains, N.Y.; five sisters, Daisy (Henry) White of New York, N.Y., Betty (Anthony) Brunson Webb and Barbara Brunson, both of Summerton, Mary Jane (Joseph) Gunter of Browns Mill, N.J., and Elanora Adams of Summerton; and one niece, Berbenia Brunson of Summerton.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Mt. Pleasant UME Church, Panola community, Pinewood, with the Rev. James Robinson, assisted by the Rev. Johnnie Lee Lawson and the Rev. Johnathan Smith.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn M. Atkinson
Carolyn McAlister Atkinson, 67, widow of Robert L. Atkinson, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Florence County, she was the daughter of Azilee Kirby McAlister and the late Roland D. McAlister. Mrs. Atkinson was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Surviving are her mother; a son, Robert W. (Daphney) Atkinson of Manning; a daughter, Lisa A. (Douglas) Vohs of Sumter; three brothers, William “Son” McAlister, Charles (Faye) McAlister, and Johnny (Maree) McAlister, all of Sumter; one sister, Faye (Ron) Wooley; numerous grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Kristina Nicole Atkinson.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 1116 Manning Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Melissa Leigh Sutton
Missy was born in Georgetown on June 6, 1978, the daughter of Cynthia Ridgeway Parker and Lendon Sutton.
She was a 1996 graduate of Sumter High School and attended Central Carolina Technical College and Cossa Valley Technical College in Rome, Ga.
She was planning on becoming a nurse.

On May 19, 2004, she lost a violent battle against Hodgkin’s Lymphoma under the loving care of the doctors and nurses in the 8 West Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston.

She shared the constant prayers of the many churches in Sumter and across the nation and she was especially beloved by the church families of Friendship Baptist in Sumter and Snow Springs Baptist in Adairsville, Ga.

She is survived by her mother of Sumter and father of Anderson; by two sons, Mikey Allen and Christian Sutton; her stepfather, Bruce Parker; and her brother, Sean Sutton, all of the home; grandparents, Dot and Howard Lowder of Sumter, Franklin and Sally Ridgeway of Manning, Opal Sutton of Adairsville, Ga., and Helen Parker of Sumter; her aunts and uncles, Timmie and Donna Ridgeway of Sumter, Chip and Brandi Lowder of Sumter, Stan and Kim Sutton of Mt. Pleasant, and Tom and Julie Sutton of Irmo; cousins, Scott Ridgeway, Chase Ridgeway, Morgan Lowder, Bobby Sutton, Cory Sutton, Saylor Sutton, Forest Sutton and BJ Johnson; and a good friend, Jamey Collins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Wyman Sutton and Woody Parker.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Bobby Nance officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, to a scholarship fund that is being set up for Missy’s children by the staff of Alice Drive Middle School, or to the Sumter County Genealogical Society, 219 W. Liberty St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Missy was always in the hearts and prayers of the faculty and students of Alice Drive Middle School.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Eliza B. Stukes
Mrs. Eliza B. Stukes, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va.

Born July 23, 1912 in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Flander and Bessie Sherod Blanding.

Mrs. Stukes was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County.
She was an active member and participated on a number of organizations in Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church of Sumter for more than 50 years.
She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Stukes was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Jeremiah Stukes.

Leaving to remember her in her “good days and good cooking” are many friends and family.
To miss her and cherish her precious memories are her four children, Charles (Mary) Crosby, Frances Montinez, Amelia (Thurston) Waldon, and adopted daughter, Deidre Stukes. She leaves three sisters to remember her, Emma B. Nelson, Nora Ayers and Catherine Ballard; stepdaughter, Mattie and her husband, George.
Mrs. Stukes leaves 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins and dear friends.

Services for Mrs. Stukes were held on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. M.H. Newton officiating, assisted by Minister Irene Anthony and Minister Sheila Murray.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Covington Raulson “C.R.” McKenzie Jr.
Mr. Covington Raulson “C.R.” McKenzie Jr., 73, died May 22, 2004 in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Covington Raulston “Cub” McKenzie Sr. and Queen Esther Driggers McKenzie.
Mr. McKenzie was a retired farmer, a senior member of the Bull Head and Puddin’ Swamp Hunting Clubs and the S.C. Coalition of Dog Hunters.
He was an avid fisherman. He was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher at Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
He served in the National Guard, attended Turbeville High School and was a member of the Great Commission Ministries.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Ruth Feagin McKenzie, one daughter, Brenda M. (Rev. Laverne) Parker of Lake City; two sons, Rodney (Angie) McKenzie of Hemmingway and Dale (Angela) McKenzie of Lake City; three sisters, Vela Mae (Melbourne) Knight of Lake City, Bonnie Lee Floyd of Charleston and Ethaline (Lamar) Driggers of Lake City; two brothers, Dexter (Elsie) McKenzie and Kenny (Bobbie) McKenzie of Lake City; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Great Commission Ministries with burial in the New Town Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to Great Commission Ministries, 3503 West Turbeville Highway, Lake City, S.C. 29560.

Ellaree F. Lowery
Ellaree Foster Lowery, 61, widow of John Wesley Lowery Sr., died May 15, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System.

Born March 18, 1943, in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of Evelyn Muldrow Foster and the late Sam Foster.
She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County.
She was a member of Mt. Sinai AME Church, where she served on the stewardess board.

Survivors besides her mother include four daughters, Sharon (James) Moore of Newark, Conn., Judy Lowery of the home, Joyce Lowery of Lynchburg, and Valencia Lowery of Sumter; two sons, Warren Foster and John (Sarah) Lowery, both of Pamplico; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six sisters, Gracie (James) McKenzie of Kingstree, Christine (Cleveland) Grady and Evelyn Foster, both of Philadelphia, Berdie (Fred) Carter and Estell Foster, both of Washington, D.C., and Sheryl Shaw of Andrews; two brothers, Sam (Anita) Foster Jr. of Philadelphia, and Charles Foster of Hebron; two aunts, Rosa Lee Perteet of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Effie McCray of New York; one uncle, Warren (Lillie Mae) Muldrow of Hebron; three sisters-in-law, Sadie (John) Simpson and Alice (John) McClam, both of Newark, N.J., and Annie Mae (Mose) Prince of Lynchburg; four brothers-in-law, Joseph Lowery and Thomas Lowery, both of Lynchburg, Oscar (Phyllis) Lowery of Arizona and Charlie Lowery of Paterson, N.J.; special friends, William Albert Kennedy of Kingstree, Lula Bell Epps of Lynchburg and Thersa Major of New Zion; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Terry Lowery; and three grandchildren, Antonio, Shinequilla and Destiny Lowery.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 21, 2004, at Mt. Sinai AME Church, Mayesville, with the Rev. Alfred Bradley, pastor, assisted by Pastor Katie Wood.

Burial was in Goodman Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
