Ethredge M. Barwick Sr.

Ethredge Myron Barwick Sr., age 72, husband of 44 years to Katherine Jacobs Barwick, died on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Lexington Medical Center Extended Care.

He was born in Clarendon County, the son of the late Charlie L. Barwick and Alice Logan Barwick.

He retired from The United Insurance Co. and was a member of The American Legion Post No. 15.

He was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Dr. Ethredge Myron (Lucy) Barwick Jr. of Columbia; one brother, Charles E Barwick of Dalzell; four sisters, Ruby B. Bryant of Columbia, Edith B. Hardy of Manning, Lois B. Poston of Great Falls and Esther B. Thomas of Manning; and three grandchildren, Katharine Woodliff Barwick, Leila Sanford Barwick and Myron Manning Barwick, all of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jeffrey Scott Barwick; and one brother, Gene W. Barwick.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larue Cook officiating.

Burial followed in the Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, 136 Poinsett Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Percy Joseph Martins

Percy Joseph Martins, 77, husband of Edith Elizabeth Cowins Martins, died Monday, April 5, 2004, in Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born September 4, 1926, in Georgetown, British Guiana, he was a son of the late Cyril and Clara Cabral Martins.

He was a retired assistant principal of Berkshire Farm Center in Canaan, N.Y.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton.

Surviving, besides his wife of Manning, are a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Shaw of Warrenton, VA; three sons, Stephen Richard “Skip” Martins of Hudson, N.Y., Thomas Scott Martins of Chatham, N.Y. and Daniel John Martins of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Joyce Somers of Santa Monica, Calif.; five grandchildren.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Jean McKenzie

Betty Jean “Nana” McKenzie, 24, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident on Walker-Gamble Road in Gable.

Born June 29, 1979, in Gable, she was a daughter of George “Buddy” McKenzie and Catherine Kennedy McKenzie.

She was a member of Howard Chapel AME Church and a 1999 graduate of East Clarendon High School in Turbeville.

Survivors besides her parents, George and Catherine Kennedy McKenzie of Gable, include one son, Trayshaun Q. McKenzie of the home; seven brothers, Willie J. (Hattie Mae) McKenzie of Gable, Curtis McKenzie of Manning, Lincoln McKenzie of the home; Tracy A. McKenzie of Dalzell, George E. McKenzie of Sumter, Freddie (Vicky) McKenzie of Sumter and Willie L. McKenzie of Bishopville; and two sisters, Mary L. McKenzie of Gable and Jannie L. McKenzie of the home.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Howard Chapel AME Church, Old Manning Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, assisting the Rev. Eddie Mayes and the Rev. Jerome McCray.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Eugene B. McLeod Sr.

PINEWOOD – Eugene Belton “Gene” McLeod Sr., 84, husband of Nancy Evans McLeod, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at his home.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Jacob Lawson McLeod and Elizabeth Beard McLeod.

Mr. McLeod was twice married, first to the late Sadie Fair Aycock McLeod then to Nancy Evans McLeod.

Mr. McLeod was a member of Pinewood United Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the church council for many years in various positions.

Mr. McLeod was educated in Manning public schools and was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater of Operations, earning the rank of major.

After the war, he settled in the Pinewood area, where he farmed and owned and operated a dairy and cotton gin.

He was a founder of Sumter Dairies, Excello Mills and Ag-Rotor.

He was also a founder and major stockholder in Young’s Food Stores.

One of his greatest loves and lifelong endeavor was serving as a member of the Natural Resources Conservation Service Commission for 50 years where he led the restoration project for Pocotaligo Swamp.

Honors include the South Carolina Outstanding Conservation District Commissioner Award and the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award given by the governor of South Carolina.

Surviving are his wife of Pinewood; his children by his first marriage, Cecilia Fair Edmunds and husband, Richard Champion Edmunds, of Wedgefield, Helen M. Lee and husband, Wedrell Wayne Lee Sr., Eugene Belton “Mac” McLeod Jr. and wife, Joan Simms McLeod, Robert Kenny McLeod and wife, Cindy Lee McLeod, Walter Pinckney McLeod and wife, Tammy Fenters McLeod, all of Pinewood; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Carol Bond and husband, Mike Bond, Kay Nobles and husband, Phil Nobles, all of Sumter, Kenneth Evans and wife, Yvonne Evans, of Lynchburg and Janice Hawkins and husband, Bob Hawkins, of Chesapeake, Va.; 11 step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 2, 2004, at Pinewood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Broomall officiating.

Burial followed in the Pinewood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Pinewood United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 218, Pinewood, S.C. 29125.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Ileatha P. Slater

Ileatha Pearson Slater, 51, wife of Harold Slater, died March 27, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Dec. 4, 1952, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Pearson Sr. and Julia Mae Cain Pearson.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School Class of 1970.

She continued her education at Morris College in Sumter and received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education.

At an early age, she joined Antioch Baptist Church, where she sang on the junior choir and was former president of the youth choir.

She also sang in the college choir.

Survivors besides her husband, Harold Slater of the home, include one daughter, Shantell (Willie) Blanding of Manning; a stepdaughter, Kinshausha Taylor of Florence; two brothers, Charlie Edward Pearson Jr. of St. Helena Island and Thomas Pearson of Manning; three sisters, Naomi (James) Hilton and Joann McKinney, both of Manning, and Ella P. Allen of Temple Hill, Md.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Doretha Pearson; and one brother, Ulysses Pearson.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Antioch Baptist Church, James Lemon-Dingle Road, Jordan community of Clarendon County, with the Rev. Antonio Lee, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, Elder Sampson Pearson and the Rev. Chris Grady.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Bryant Dozier

Bryant Dozier, 19, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at his residence.

He was born May 22, 1985, in Clarendon County.

He was a member of St. Matthews AME Church, where he sang in the youth choir.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and completed his education at Miramar High School in Miramar, Fla., where he played in the school band.

Survivors include one brother, Antonio Dozier of Summerton; and one sister, Sonya Dozier of Miramar, Fla.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 29, 2004, at St. Matthews AME Church with the Rev. Silas Spann and the Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.
