Johnnie Lee Robinson Jr.

Johnnie Lee Robinson Jr., 60, husband of Margaret P. Robinson, died April 12, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born March 10, 1944, in Manning, he was a son of the late Johnnie Lee Robinson Sr. and Carrie Riley Robinson. He was a member of Mt. Zero Baptist Church and a graduate of Manning Training High School. He also attended Sumter Area Technical College. While in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a supervisor of Marion Construction Co. for several years. In 1990, he returned to Sumter and established his business, J&M Construction Co.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Butler (Charlotte) of Sumter, Sean Vicks of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Nichols Wright of Montgomery, Md.; three daughters, Angelica Brown (Albert) of Sumter, Denise Steward (Luke) of Sumter and Tara Robinson David (Gilbert) of Wedgefield; four sisters, Ann Johnson (Samuel) of Sumter, Adeline Robinson of Paxville, Dorothy June (Charles) of Manning and Willie Mae Robinson of Smithfield, Va.; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Estelle Johnson; one daughter, Annette Robinson; and one son, Jed Robinson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Henry Presley, Emanuel Davis, Jerome McCray and David Pugh.

Burial was in Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Kenith Johnson

SANTEE – Kenith Johnson, 85, of Santee, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at Orangeburg Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 31, 1918, in the Summerton community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Seymore Johnson and Frances Nelson Johnson. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was retired from the Township of Washington after 35 years of service in Robbinsville, N.J. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Robbinsville, N.J., where he served on the trustee board. After returning to Santee, he attended Santee AME Church in Summerton.

Survivors include one sister, Ruth Johnson of Summerton, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Santee AME Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Silas Spann, assisting pastor, Robert Washington and Minister Nathan Bennett.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Hicks

Mary Taylor Baldwin Hicks, 73, wife of the Rev. Sylvester Hicks and widow of Wiley Oscar Baldwin, died Monday, April 17, 2004, at her residence in Manning.

Born Jan. 27, 1931, in Lake Waccamaw, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Solomon Taylor and Anna Belle Hopgood Taylor. She attended the public schools of Lake Waccamaw and furthered her education and received a nursing assistant certificate from MATS in Brooklyn, N.Y. In her youth, she worshipped at the Little Wheel of Hope Baptist Church. After moving to Brooklyn, she was a member of Galilee Baptist Church. After marriage, she joined Fellowship Baptist, where she served in the youth department and was treasurer.

Survivors besides her husband, the Rev. Sylvester Hicks of the home, include one son, Wiley “Eugene” Baldwin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Brenda Baldwin of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Tracey (Thomas) Ragin of Sumter; reared in the home, Calotter (Darnell) Richmond of Jacksonville, Fla., and La-Verne Pendergrass of Manning; two grands reared in the home, Yolanda Forbes of Manning and Brendan O’Neal of Columbia; three stepdaughters, Vera, Vestine and Katherine; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Michael.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, presiding. Apostle Anna Belle Thompson delivered the eulogy, the Rev. Henry Mitchell and Minister Solomon Billups assisted.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Willie Lee Harvin

Willie Lee “Billy” Harvin, 56, widower of Celestine Morris Harvin, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center, Columbia.

Born May 2, 1947, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Hattie Mae Mellerson Harvin and the late Daniel Harvin Sr. and raised by Viola Mellerson Hammett and the late Robert Hammett. He received his formal education in the public schools of Miami. He was a U.S. Army veteran, honorably discharged, receiving decoration medals, badges, commendations and citations such as Nation Defense service medal, Vietnam service medal, Silver Star and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Survivors include his mothers, Hattie Mae Mellerson Harvin and Viola Mellerson Hammett; one son, Robert Leroi Harvin of Columbia; one daughter, Tracey (Curtis) McFadden of Columbia; one brother, Alex Harvin of Valley Stream, N.Y.; three sisters, Eulease (Larry) Bowman of Baltimore, Azalee (James) Harvin-Martin and Bernice (Nehimiah) Conyers of Valley Stream, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and a stepbrother.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Buster Mellerson and Elder Sampson Pearson.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mattie T. Galloway

Mattie Theola Galloway, 81, widow of Joseph M. Galloway, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 25, 1922, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Harmon Moultrie and Ida Wise Geddings. She was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Hilda Jean Harwell of Camden, Linda Marie Smith of Sumter and Donna Kay Zeitz of Louisville, Ky.; five sons, Joel Glenn Galloway of Manning, Joseph Edward Galloway of Blue Mountain, Miss., Michael Steven Galloway of Guyton, Ga., Gary Lynn Galloway and Allen Ray Galloway, both of New Albany, Miss.; a brother, Harmon Moultrie Geddings of Santee; two sisters, Marion Galloway of Sumter and Betty Cornman of Warner Robbins, Ga.; 28 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Jane Hodge Bolinger, a brother and five sisters.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 29, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Dr. Bruce Watford officiated.

Burial followed in the Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, South Carolina Office, P.O. Box 23128, Columbia, S.C. 29224-3128.

Samuel D. Dubose

METTER, Ga. – Mr. Samuel Dyson Dubose died on Friday, April 16, 2004, at the Candler County Hospital in Metter, Ga.

He was born April 28, 2004, in Clarendon County, to Gilbert and Eliza Pleasant Dubose. Mr. Dubose was a member of Zion Hill AME Church, where he was a lifelong member. He was educated in Sumter County at the Fulton School in the Sand Hill community. Mr. Dubose was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Gilbert Smith Dubose, David Dubose, William James Dubose, and Sally Albert Dubose.

Surviving are four sons, Garnette Dubose of Detroit, Mich., James and Gilbert (Sonya) Dubose of Pinewood and Jackie Spann of California; three daughters, Sherlyn Thompson of Georgia, Joyce (Kevin) McGee of Sumter and Dorothy (Terry) Jackson of Pinewood; 14 grandchildren; six brothers, Authur Dubose, Alonzo (Gladys) Dubose, Henry Dubose, Matthew Dubose, Moses (Barbara) Dubose and John Henry (Jarnelle) Dubose, all of Pinewood; eight sisters, Julie H. Pleasant of Pinewood, Francis (Samuel) Boston of Newport News, Va., Dorcus (Nelson) Ridgill of Manning, Susan Brown of Bronx, N.Y., Margaret (James) Wright of Pinewood, Nellie Dubose, Caroline (Hazel) Budden and Rosa Henderson, all of Sumter.

Services were held on Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Zion Hill AME Church, Pinewood. The Rev. Richard A. McKnight Jr., pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Stanley E. Hayes Sr. and Minister Samuel Benjamin.

Burial was be in the Manning Cemetery, Pinewood.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

William E. Clark

William Edward “Bill” Clark passed away at his home in Newport News, Va., on Monday, April 19, 2004.

A native of Arkansas and a former resident of Manning, Mr. Clark retired as a chief master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force after 23 years of service. He was the recipient of several decorations and medals. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Upon retirement, he entered a second career with the Air Force Civil Service, retiring in 1991 after 22 years of service. He was formerly a member of Manning First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the DAV and a former member of the American Legion. He was a loving husband, brother, uncle and friend.

Mr. Clark was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elsie Lamkins Clark.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 49 years, Helen Bodenheimer Clark; his sister, Mary Frances Edwards of Rosebud, Ark.; his brother, Percy Clark of Ashland, Ohio; brother-in-law, John Bodenheimer of Aiken; two nieces; a nephew; and three grandnephews, all of Columbia; and several other nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, April 25, 2004, in the Manning Cemetery with full military honors. The Rev. Carey S. McElveen officiated.

Linda L. Tidwell

Linda Lowder Tidwell, 58, wife of the late Riley Leroy Tidwell Sr., died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at the Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born April 21, 1945, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Allen Ludlow Lowder Sr. and the late Ella Mae McClard Carter. Linda accepted Jesus into her heart and grew in his love and grace. She was a writer of children’s stories. She took a course in “Writing for Children and Teenagers” after having written 13 short stories. She has written numerous short stories since then. Linda and her granddaughter, Taylor, co-authored two short children’s stories. She had attended Paxville Baptist Church as she was able, as her health was declining.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Allen Alsbrooks of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Kenneth Randall Alsbrooks of Deland, Fla.; two daughters, Sheila Dee Platt and Sharon Lee Moore, both of Manning; three grandsons, Blair Alexander Moore, Kenneth Randall Alsbrooks II and “Corey;” two granddaughters, Taylor Danielle Platt and Charley Thomas; two sisters, Dee Schmidt of Sumter and Sheila Baen of Westmont, N.J.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Bernice Lowder; a brother, Allen Ludlow Lowder Jr.; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 16, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Pastor Eugene Mosier officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Laura D. Page

Laura Dean Donovan Page, 82, widow of James Page, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 14, 1921, in Georgetown, Ky., she was a daughter of the late William and Minnie Ella Wise Donovan. She was a retired waitress, a member of the DAV Auxiliary, and a member of Timmonsville Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Ella Mae (Carl) Farley of Summerton; a sister, Katherine Poynter of Venice, Fla.; a brother, W.M. Donovan Jr. of Lexington, Ky.; three grandsons, Carl Farley Jr., Robert A. Farley and Michael D. Farley; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 17, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating.

Memorials may be made to Lake Marion Nursing Home, P.O. Box 1159, Summerton, S.C. 29148.
