Roosevelt Ramsey

Roosevelt Ramsey, 62, of Wisteria Apt. 6-B, Manning, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born April 14, 1941, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Joe Ramsey Sr. and Lou Gadson Ramsey. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He attended Green Hill Baptist Church in his youth. He was an independent truck driver.

Survivors include one son of Alcolu; one daughter, Angelique Ramsey of Suffolk, Va.; four brothers, Ernest (Emma) Ramsey of Bridgeport, Conn., Lewis (Lilie) Ramsey, Robert Lee (Emma Ruth) Ramsey and Joe Ramsey, all of Alcolu; three sisters, Mary (Henry) Nelson and Robertha Samuels, both of Alcolu, Annie Bell (Tommy Lee) Felder of Bridgeport, Conn.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother, James Ramsey.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. W.J. Frierson officiating, assisted by Minister John Nelson and the Rev. D.K. Frierson.

Burial was in Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Alcolu.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Robert L. Pendergrass

Mr. Robert Lee Pendergrass, 23, of 1579 Pinewood Road, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, after a tragic accident.

He was born in Clarendon County, Nov. 29, 1980, to Miss La’Verne Pendergrass of Columbia, and Mr. James Fulmore, of West Palm Beach, Fla. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. He was a self-employed auto mechanic. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal savior.

Survivors include his parents; his significant other, Denitra Tindal, and a daughter, Kavareona Na’Riah “Juicy” Tindal of the home, Sumter; one brother, Mr. Eric Pendergrass of Manning; one sister, Miss Katrell Fulmore of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a stepfather, Mr. Willie Anthony Jr. of Sumter; grandmother, Mrs. Vera Holland of Washington, D.C.; and great-grandparents, Mrs. Sylvester and Mrs. Mary Hicks of Manning.

Funeral service were held on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at Faith Enterprise Church, in Sumter, with the Rev. Richard Baxter officiating assisted by the Rev. Sylvester Hicks and Minister Clinton McKenzie. Burial followed in the Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of services.

James R. Pate

James Richard “Pop” Pate, 76, husband of Letitia J. Perkins Pate, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 11, 1927, in Bishopville, he was a son of the late James Clyde and Eula Eunice Hancock Pate. He was retired from Sumter County EMS and also served as a Manning city police officer for 17 years. He was a WWII Army veteran, and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Sumter are five daughters, Terry Grisillo of John’s Island, Harriet Lowder of Manning, Jean Myers of Latta, Betty Jo Mackin of Mount Pleasant and Irene Culick of Sumter; three stepsons, Lawrence Perkins of Columbia, Leslie Perkins of Sumter and John Perkins of Charlotte; two sisters, Ila Mitchum of Georgetown and Christine Pack of Manning; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandsons; and his first wife, Laverne Lee of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 in Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Walton Kendall and Keith Burgess officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Arise and Build Fund, 2401 Bethel Church Road, Sumter, SC 29154.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium was in charge of arrangements.

William P. Marsh

William Patrick “Pat” Marsh, 69, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Born in Chesterfield County, he was the son of the late Bert E. Marsh and the late Mary Lee Ayers Marsh. Mr. Marsh was retired from the Sumter Item after over 30 years in the composing department. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and the Manchester Trail Riders.

Surviving are two sisters, Helen Tilford of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Margaret Marsh Lewis of Walhalla; two brothers, B.J. “Jeff” Marsh of Pinewood and Robert F. “Bob” Marsh of Summerton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Mr. Brian Hatfield officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

James B. Herrington

James Benson Herrington, 61, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System in Lake City.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Ila Atkinson Herrington and the late James Benjamin Herrington. Mr. Herrington was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and had been employed by Montague Industrial for 41 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his mother of Sumter; a son, DuVon Herrington of Wedgefield; a daughter, Lisa Austin and husband, Donnie, of Gable; his companion, Linda Morris Hodge of Olanta; three stepchildren, Susanna H. Pappas, Rachel Lauren Hodge and Candace Hodge Horton; two grandchildren, Laken Austin and Kelsie Austin; and two step-grandchildren, Daniel Christopher Pappas and Emily Grace Pappas.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Victor Van Ras and the Rev. Preston Grimsley officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1177, Sumter, SC 29151.

Ernest Dixon

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Ernest “Bo-Pete” Dixon, 61, husband of Earline Dixon, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at South Shore Hospital, New Rochelle, N.Y.

Born Nov. 16, 1942, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Robert “Robbie” Dixon and Ethel Young Dixon. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he was a member of Laurel Hill AME Church. He was employed with the United Postal Service and S&1 Trucking Co. until his illness.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Kathy Rawles of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Wendy Tucker of Baltimore; three brothers, Joseph “Joe” Dixon of South Hill, Va., Johnnie Dixon of Bronx, N.Y., and Michael Bennett of Manning; three sisters, Neomia Forbes and Lillian Dukes, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Diane (Ernest) Choice of Sumter; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at Prayer House Mission Church, Davis Crossroad community, Summerton, with Bishop Johnnie L. Gilliam Sr., pastor, officiating, assisted by Mother Q.E. Bennett, Overseer Rev. James E. Blanding, Elder Johnnie L. Gilliam Jr. and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.

Burial was in Hopkin Cemetery, Davis Station community.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph H. Brunson Sr.

Retired Sumter Police Chief Joseph Harris Brunson Sr., 64, husband of Pat Shorter Brunson, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Clifton C. Brunson and the late Madeline Clark Brunson. He was retired from the Sumter Police Department after 30 years of service, having worked his way through the ranks to the position of chief. He excelled and graduated from the FBI Academy, graduated from Summerton High School and attended Clemson University. He was a faithful member of Northside Baptist Church and was a member of the Rev. Jimmy Holley’s Sunday School class. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His true loves were playing with his grandsons, golfing and fishing.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Joseph Harris “Joey” Brunson Jr. and his wife, Annette, of Sumter; a daughter, Donna B. Moore and her husband, Clint, of Sumter; three grandsons, Christopher Moore, Brunson Moore and Joseph Harris Brunson III; a sister, Cliford Ann Schmidt of Sumter; three brothers, Bill Brunson, Don Brunson and Cliff Brunson, all of Summerton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 at Northside Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Northside Memorial Baptist Church, 1004 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Celia Mae Johnson

Celia Mae Johnson, 75, widow of Lewis Johnson, died Feb. 8, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 11, 1929, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Tommie and Millie Woods Taylor. Her early education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and she graduated from Johnson High School in Timmonsville. She was employed by Tuomey Regional Medical Center for more than 30 years as a licensed practical nurse. A lifelong member of St. Mark AME Church, she sang in the choir and was honored as Woman of the Year on several occasions.

Survivors include one daughter, Cecelia Ann Johnson of Atlanta; one sister, Dollie Palmer of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Harry Taylor of Olanta; three special nieces, Janice Pauldo of Decatur, Ga., Dorothy Westbrook of Atlanta and Lucille (Edward) Hickson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; one adopted sister, Ida Davis of Sumter; special cousins, Herman Lowery and Mozel Lowery of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at St. Mark AME Church in Olanta. The Rev. Ron W. Taylor, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. C.N. Howard.

Burial followed in St. Mark Church Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie James

Mr. Johnnie “Brother” James, 67, husband of Vernell Nathaniel James, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at the Hopewell Healthcare Center, Sumter.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Mr. Hannibal and Mrs. Lucinder Maple James.

Survivors include his wife, Vernell Nathaniel James of the home; five daughters, Shirley Lue and Patricia Ann James of New York City, Debroah Mutruci of Columbia, the Rev. Patricia (the Rev. Jerome) Sumter of Sumter, and Linda (Dwayne) Goines of Manning; two sons, John Darrel Mutruci of Pensacola, Fla., and Lawrence James of New York City; four sisters, Elouise (Perry) Pringle, Hattie (Luther) Bells, Louise Clea and Clara Bellamy of Sumter; five brothers, Hannibal James Jr., Clarence (Odell) James, Samuel (Ruby) James, George (Lessie) James and Leroy (Susan) James of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four aunts; and a mother-in-law, Mrs. Janie Nathaniel of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Margie and Rochelle James of New York City; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at the Union Baptist Church in Wedgefield. The pastor, the Rev. Travis Holmes, officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Hillside Memorial Park of Sumter.

Charlie James

Charlie “Slick” James Sr., 72, widower of Ethel Nelson James, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Hospital.

Born April 6, 1931, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Monk James and Lena Moses James. He received his education at Reeseville School and furthered his education with night school at Alcolu Elementary School. He joined Reeseville AME Church at an early age, and has been a lifelong member.

Survivors include one son, Charlie (Corliss) James Jr. of Baltimore; a daughter, Rosa James of Manning; an adopted daughter, Roshell Johnson of Manning; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Johnny, Ernest and George James; and a sister, Rosa Blanding.

Services were held Tuesday, Feb.27, 2004, at Reeseville AME Church in Alcolu. The Rev. Marie Harvin, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by evangelist Linda Simmons and pastor Thelma Kennedy. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
