William Thomas Jones, Sr.

William Thomas Jones, Sr., 89, widower of Dorothy Herbert Jones, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at his home in Summerton.

Born Nov. 9, 1914, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Samuel Purse and Sarah Feagan Jones. He was former owner and operator of a cemetery and a construction business. He was member of Summerton Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are three sons, William T. Jones, Jr. of Houston, Robert Lewis (Gail) Jones, and Larry Eugene (Pat) Jones of Sumter; a daughter, Lillian “Lil” (Bob) Crowley of Bradner, Ohio; a brother, Andrew Feagan Jones of Columbia; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Purse Jones, and a sister, Frances Griffith.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, March 24, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home & Crematorium in Sumter with the Rev. Garland Stokes Hart officiating.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Presbyterian Church, 16 S. Cantey Street, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Bertha L. Johnson

Bertha “Bert” Lawson Johnson, 70, wife of Franklin D. Johnson Sr., died Friday, March 12, 2004, at her home in Summerton.

Born Nov. 1, 1933, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Bertie Lawson and Mary Richardson Lawson.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Historic Liberty Hill AME Church.

Survivors besides her husband, Franklin D. Johnson Sr. of the home, include two sons, Albertis (Ivory) Lawson of Summerton and Franklin (Patricia) Johnson Jr. of Sumter; three daughters, Celestine (Ulyses) Bethea of Newark, N.J., Barbara Johnson of the home and Betty Johnson of Newark; a brother, Tyrone Lawson of Summerton; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. M.J. Capers, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Nadine Crosby Lane Beach

COLLETON COUNTY – Mrs. Nadine Crosby Lane Beach, 78, of Sumter, formerly of Walterboro, first married to the late Mr. Ellis Lane and then to the late Mr. Haskell Beach, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Beach was born March 22, 1925, in Colleton County and was the daughter of Henry Crosby and Marie Hiott Crosby. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are sons Ellis Lane Jr. of Manning, Billy Haskell Beach of Rock Hill and Henry Lee Beach of Myrtle Beach; daughters Nadine Marie Braxton of Alcolu, Annie Heatley of Santee and Mary Lou Carns of Dalzell; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 22, 2004, in the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel.

Interment was in Live Oak Cemetery.

Sandra Jean Westbrook Youngblood

Sandra Jean Westbrook Youngblood, 64, wife of William Louis Youngblood Sr., died Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Burlington, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence John Westbrook Sr. and the late Jane Dorothy Hackworth Westbrook.

She was employed by Farmers Telephone Cooperative for more than 24 years, was a member of VFW Post 3034 Ladies Auxiliary, the Midlands Retired Military Association, and attended St. Jude Catholic Church.

Survivors, besides her husband, include five children, William Louis Youngblood Jr. of Sumter, Debra Jane Youngblood Lunsford of Coral Springs, Fla., Lawrence John Youngblood of Turbeville, Daniel Thomas Youngblood of Bishopville and Michael Patrick Youngblood of Sumter; six grandchildren, Michael David Wingard, Heather Danielle Wingard, Kara Marie Russell, Devyn Wingard Youngblood, Bailey Alexsandra Lunsford and Austen Howard Youngblood; four brothers and sisters, Lawrence J. Westbrook of Lady Lake, Fla., Richard J. Westbrook of Niceville, Fla., Pamela M. Hawk of Sumter, and Randall S. Westbrook of Choctaw, Okla.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Patrick Westbrook.

Services were held Monday, March 15, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Deacon Charles Walsh officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Swainsboro City Cemetery in Swainsboro, Ga.

Memorials may be made to the Sumter County Disabilities and Special Needs Foundation, 750 Electric Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Delbert Welch

Delbert Welch, 69, died Monday, March 1, 2004, in his home.

Born Nov. 9, 1934, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Edna A. Welch and the late Samuel M. Welch. He was a retired truck driver.

Survivors, besides his mother of Sardinia, include his former wife of 38 years, Peggy Smith Welch Todd of Hemingway; three sons, Heyward (Cindy) Welch of Lynchburg, Russell “Shorty” (Debbie) Welch of Lake City, and John Allen (Lynn) Welch of Turbeville; four daughters, Brenda (Donnie) Baker and Jean (Mark) Baker Mark of Sumter, Wendy (Terry) Teal of Scranton and Cheryl (Charles) Branch of Inman; four brothers, Ernest (Bernice) Welch of Sardinia, Kenny (Letha) Welch of Turbeville, Edward (Rosie) Welch of Sardinia, Bobby Welch of Gable; a sister, Lennie Chockley of Lake City; sister-in-law, Mattie Welch; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest “Peanut” Welch and Sam Welch Jr.; a sister, Jewel Mae “Sue” Johnson; and two brothers-in-law, Sid Chockley and Arthur Johnson.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 5, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Wayne Windham officiated the service.

George Moorer Sr.

BALTIMORE – George Moorer Sr., 63, husband of Hedy Oliver Moorer, died March 4, 2004, at Joseph Richey Hospice, Baltimore.

Born April 8, 1940, in Manning, he was the son of the late Joe Moorer Sr. and Katie Oliver Moorer. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. After completing his education, he moved to Baltimore, where he became employed with Amhrein Bakery, Concrete Pipe and Products and later employed with Al Packer Ford.

Survivors, besides his wife, Hedy O. Moorer of Baltimore, include one son, George Moorer Jr. of Baltimore; one daughter, Nicole Moorer of Baltimore; one brother, Thomas Moorer of Manning; six sisters, Lucille Lemon of Baltimore, Hulean Kinder and Viola Riley of Manning, Josephine Brady of Brooklyn, N.Y., Queen Singleton of Norwalk, Conn., and Janie Thomas of West Palm Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Geneva Brunson.

Services were held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, Alex Harvin Highway, U.S. 301 South. The Rev. Dr. Ashley Vaughn, pastor, officiated the service.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Thomas H. Montgomery

Thomas Henry Montgomery, 67, of 1757 Dozier-Mallett Road, Sugar Hill community of Manning, widower of Rosie Ann Wells Montgomery, died March 7, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born July 22, 1936, in the Greeleyville section of Williamsburg County, he was the son of the Rev. Henry O. “Doc” Montgomery and Lena Rawlinson Montgomery and stepson of Addie Samuels Montgomery. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as president of the trustee board and member of the gospel choir and the male chorus. He was also the president of the Singing Convention at the Friendly Union.

Survivors, besides his stepmother, Addie S. Montgomery of Manning, include one stepson; two sisters, Mary Witherspoon and Lottie Mallett of Manning; and two stepsisters, Dorothy Morant of Manning and Clemmie Adger of Mayesville.

Services were held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at William Chapel Christian Church, S.C. 261 in Manning. Pastor Emanuel Evans and the Rev. Gussie Ceasar officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Rosa Mae Fulton, Jack Morant and evangelist Lucretia Pugh.

Burial followed in St. Matthews Cemetery.

Edna S. Mims

Edna Scott Mims, 84, wife of John DuRant Mims, died Monday, March 15, 2004, in Carolinas Hospital System in Lake City.

Born June 30, 1919, in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late George Walter and Arrie Belle Buddin Scott. She was of the Methodist faith

Survivors, besides her husband, include three daughters, Lorraine (Dennis) Kropf of Manning, Roberta (Mike) Burrows of Sumter and Lois (Johnnie) Shaff of Glennville, Ga.; a son, Dr. Albert (Julia) Mims of Lake City; five sisters, Evelyn Cain of Columbia, Janet McCrea of Kingstree, Virginia Tedder and Gracie Chandler of Kingstree, and Doris Tisdale of St. Stephens; a special niece, Rose (Chris) Osborne of Greeleyville; twelve grandchildren; one great grandson and one great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a stepmother, Fannie McKnight Scott.

Services were held on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church near Greeleyville. The Rev. Billy Cooper officiated.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Memorials may be made to your local Meals-On-Wheels.

Kathleen Kind

Ms. Kathleen “Kat” Kind, 33, of 1978 Carter Road, Summerton, companion of Roy Lester Anderson, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at her residence.

Born April 18, 1970, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Henry Kind and Viola Canty Kind. She was a member of St. Matthew AME Church. She was a 1988 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. She was manager of Shoe Show and Dollar General of Manning until declining health.

Survivors include four sons, Raynard, Rayshard, Antonio and Thomas Kind of the home; one daughter, Shyova Kind of the home; three brothers, George (Deloris) Canty of Panola, Jimmy Lee Kind of Charleston and Jamanuel Kind of Port Chester, N.Y.; two sisters, Viola Kind of Summerton and Emma Lue Canty of Manning; one adopted sister, Sadie Williams of Manning; godparents, Deborah and James Nesbitt of Pinewood; and two god brothers, Keith and Kenneth Nesbitt of Atlanta.

Services were held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at St. Matthew AME Church, Moses Dingle Road, Summerton. The Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Jackie Anderson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.
