Johnny Lee Gainey, Jr., 58, son of Gladd and Mary E. Gainey Weatherford, was born October 25, 1952 in Chesterfield County, SC. He is survived by his brother, Gladd Gainey of Chesterfield, SC; sisters, Irene Williams of Chesterfield, SC, Annie Harrison of Morven, NC, Frances Rivers of Jacksonville, FL. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Children’s Baptist Church for his family and friends.

Nolen Gainey

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Nolen J. Gainey, 81, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, October 25, 2004 at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Pat Orr and the Rev. Grover Johnson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Prospect United Methodist Church Piano & Organ Fund, 2403 Ruby Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Gainey died Saturday, October 23, 2004. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, he was a son of the late Akre and Bessie Griggs Gainey. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and served as Sunday school superintendent for many years. He served in the U. S. Navy during World II and was retired from the Hartsville Bleachery and Sonoco Products Company.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Myrtle Johnson Gainey of Hartsville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Fred Cromartie of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Vera Gay of Wareham, MA, Quin Johnson of Hartsville, SC, Katie Hodge of Hartsville, SC; granddaughters and spouses, Kim and Kenny Andrews, Carmen and Al Dean Davis; great-granddaughter, Logan Andrews. Services for Mary Moore Parnell, 78, will be held Friday October 22, 2010 at 11:00am at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Home Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550. Mrs. Parnell, wife of the late Edward Dayle Parnell, Sr. died October 19, 2010. Born in Pageland, SC she was the daughter of the late U.F. and Goldie Sutton Moore. She was a graduate of Coker College and was a retired teacher with the Darlington County School District. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Jackie Hall Sunday School class, and served the church in many areas including Grateful Heart ministries, Prayer Room and Missions Bazaar. She was a former Girl Scout Troop Leader and an avid bridge player She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Dorothy M. Jernigan, and niece, Patricia M. Jernigan. She is survived by son and daughter in law, Eddie and Tammy Parnell of Mount Pleasant; daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Kim Clark of Mount Pleasant; Shannon and David Doerring of Surfside Beach; Much loved and adored grandchildren, Elizabeth Parnell, MK Parnell, Stephanie Parnell, Jackson Clark and Grey Clark; Nephew, Col. (Ret.) G.R. (Jet) and Julie Jernigan of Columbia, SC.

Leroy Morris

May 17th, 1938 - October 20th, 2010

All of Heaven’s Angels rejoiced in celebration on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, as they welcomed home the Lord’s faithful servant, Charles Leroy Morris. Funeral services for Leroy, 72, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch and the Rev. Dr. Milton Frazier will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 22, 2010 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 949 N. Marquis Hwy. Hartsville, SC 29550. He was born in Chesterfield County on May 17, 1938 to Hugh and Maybelle Alexander Morris. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served as a faithful usher, always greeting friends with a smile and peppermint candies. He was also a member of the Living Hope Sunday School class. Leroy served as a Deputy Sheriff for several years as well as a Constable for eight years in Darlington County, was previously employed by Sonoco Products Co., and was currently employed with Hartsville Drug Company. He was in the used car business for much of his life and was owner of Leroy’s Used Cars. He was a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge # 173, York Rite, Omar Temple and the Red Fez. Surviving are his wife, Edna Johnson Morris; children, Ronald (Margaret) Morris, Russell Morris, Craig (Lori) Morris, Cheryl (Billy) Fields, Billy Gandy; grandchildren, Brian Morris, Regina Morris Ard, Delphia McFadden, Kaylyn Morris, Lyn Lovelace, Candace Morris Brown, Taylor Morris, Jason (Cynthia) Fields, Stacie C. Fields, AnnaGrace Gandy; great-grandchildren, Hunter Morris, Cooper Ard, Caroline Ard, and the apple of his eye, Madison Fields; sister, Margaret Melton; brothers, Howard (Willie Faye) Morris, Johnny Morris. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Sellers; brothers, Roland Morris, David Morris, Rufus Morris.

Josh Joyner Stanton

May 27th, 1933 - October 21st, 2010

Joshua Joyner Stanton, Jr., 77, of Hartsville, SC, died Thursday, October 21 at Providence Hospital. He leaves a wife and two sons to mourn his loss. Born May 27, 1933, in Stantonsburg, NC, Josh graduated from the College of Agriculture at N.C State University in 1955 with a BS Degree in Agronomy. His post-graduate work there was interrupted by two years service in the US Army, and he then joined Coker Pedigreed Seed Co. as a breeder of small grains in 1959. In 1972, Josh was appointed director of Coker Soybean research and head of the firm’s Soybean Division, and served as its leader until 1988. He developed numerous new varieties of soybeans, including several that led all others in performance tests and were the varieties most often used by yield contest winners over those years. The improved varieties that he developed continue today to appear in the pedigrees of many soybean varieties around the world. He served terms as president of the South Carolina Soybean Association and of the Agronomy Society of South Carolina. Josh was the SCSBA’s 1982 Soybean Man of the Year, and in 1991 was named a Distinguished Agronomist by the ASSC. He retired from Stoneville Pedigreed Seed in 1995 after 36 years of service to crop science. Josh is remembered as a loving husband and father, an excellent mentor, a patient teacher and a true friend. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Josh was preceded in death by his parents, Joshua Joyner Stanton and Mabel Estelle Wooten Stanton. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Linda Anne Williams Stanton of Hartsville, SC, and their sons, James Edward Stanton and David Williams Stanton, both of Hartsville, SC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010 at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Rev. Phil Thrailkill will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins.

Thomas Ezra Hill

January 9th, 1927 - October 22nd, 2010

Funeral services for Thomas Ezra Hill, 83, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Antioch Baptist Church. The Rev. John Helms will officiate with burial in the church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday, October 25, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, 1121 Bethlehem Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550. Mr. Hill died Friday, October 22, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Lewis G. and Nellie Boswell Hill. He was a member and former deacon of Antioch Baptist Church. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was retired from the Army SC National Guard. He taught school for a few years and was a retired farmer and rural route mail carrier. He was a graduate of Clemson University and was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge # 173. Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Watkins Hill of Hartsville, SC; daughters, Kathy (David) Abele of Charleston, SC, Doris (Steve) Rabon of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Jennifer Wright and Kyle Rabon. He was predeceased by his brother, George W. Hill, and his sister, Mae H. Pitts.

Lida Rea O'Neal Hodge

February 15th, 1922 - October 24th, 2010

Graveside services for Lida Rea O'Neal Hodge, 88, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Darlington Memory Gardens. The Rev. Becky Jones will officiate with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Mrs. Hodge, widow of Elliott M. Hodge, died Sunday, October 24, 2010. Born in Chesterfield, SC, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Marie Lundy O'Neal. She was formerly a member of Christian View Church and was retired from Nytronics. Surviving are her sons, Levaughan (Cynthia) Hodge of Darlington, SC, Joell M. (Shelby) Hodge of Chesterfield, SC, Derman B. (Marilyn) Hodge of Florence, SC; daughter, Sharon Denise (Roger) Nichols of Hartsville, SC; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Martin R. Hodge and her brother, Henry D. O’Neal.

Elizabeth Barfield Clanton

May 20th, 1925 - October 24th, 2010

Funeral services for Elizabeth Barfield Clanton, 85, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Mt. Elon Baptist Church. The Rev. Robin King will officiate with burial in the church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 26, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mt. Elon Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 38, Lydia, SC 29079. Mrs. Clanton, widow of Frances Lee Clanton, died Sunday, October 24, 2010. Born in Kershaw Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Zealon Barfield and the late Irene Robertson Barfield Laney. Mrs. Clanton was a lifelong member of the Mt. Elon Baptist Church and was a charter member of Rose Trellis Garden Club. She spent her entire career lovingly and loyally working for the Mims Farms of Lydia as bookkeeper, confident and friend of the entire Mims family. Following retirement, she was employed for several years as Assistant Post Mistress of the Lydia Post Office. Mrs. Clanton has generously spent most of her time with her many, many friends and family members providing them with words of wisdom and life support, guidance and direction coupled with a hearty laugh, always. She enjoyed working in her yard and garden and took pleasure in sharing both. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl Clanton and Paul Ernest Walters of N. Myrtle Beach, SC; granddaughters, Christine Elizabeth Lee of Lexington, SC, Ashley Anne Lee of Charleston, SC; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Lee of Lexington, SC; sisters, Lucy Barfield Elmore and Patricia Ann Barfield (James) Weidner; godson, Zane Anthony Weidner. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jacqueline Barfield.

Betty Jean Hawkins

Wilson of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Robin Darnell, Christy Gilliam, Jessie Wayne Skinner, Ross Johnson, Brittiany Johnson; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter "Buck" Yarborough; sisters, Roxie Higgins and Sarah Williams.
