Brooks Walters

ELGIN — Funeral services for Harvey Brooks Walters, 88, of Lugoff will be held Sunday, December 12, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel with burial to follow in Southland Memorial Gardens in Columbia, SC. Rev. Dr. Gene Rollins will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday, December 11, 2004 6:00-8:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 170, Liberty Hill, SC, 29074.

Mr. Walters died Friday, December 10, 2004. Born in Lee County, he was the son of the late R.W. and Eva Huggins Walters. He was retired from Defender Industries and was a member of Bishopville First Baptist.

Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Walters; daughters, Pat Benson of Lexington, Linda Bundrick of Lugoff; 3 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Joe Walters of Lugoff and Henry Walters of Allendale.

George Kyzer

LEXINGTON — Services for George Brady Kyzer, 64, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 12, 2004 at Red Bank United Methodist Church with burial to follow in church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Red Bank United Methodist Church, 2909 Old Barnwell Rd., Lexington, 29073 or Tri-County Hospice, 166 Stonebridge Dr., Ste 100, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Kyzer, widow of Dorothy Faye Harmon Kyzer, died Thursday, December 9, 2004. He was the son of the late George Wilbur and Myrtleen Risinger Kyzer. He was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Abigail Kyzer, and son, Tony Kyzer all of Lexington; brother, James Brice Kyzer of Lexington; grandchildren, Amanda Slater, Ron, Scott, Justin and Megan Kyzer; great-grandchildren, Dylan Slater and Zachery Kyzer.

Mr. Kyzer was preceded in death by his daughter, Wanda Faye Kyzer, and brother, Carroll Kyzer.

Kenneth Sturgeon

HICKORY, N.C. — Graveside service for Kenneth Marion Sturgeon, 74, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, from 6-7 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Sturgeon died Tuesday, December 7, 2004. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Henry M. and Lucille Arnold Sturgeon. A graduate of Dreher High School and U.S.C., he was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are a son, Timothy M. Sturgeon of Washington , D.C.; a daughter, Susan G. Sturgeon of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Nadine S. Crow of Columbia; brothers, Edward A. Sturgeon of Greenville, and Henry M. Sturgeon, III, of Columbia. Mr. Sturgeon was predeceased by two brothers, Henry and Frank Sturgeon.

Ruby Lawson

ORANGEBURG — Ruby Norton Lawson died Thursday.

Graveside service will be held 3:30 P.M. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg, directed by Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg. The family will receive friends at the cemetery after the funeral.

Survivors: 1 daughter, Mrs. Curtis (Faye) Lake of Sandy Run; 2 sons and daughter-in-laws, David C. and Sherrill Lawson, Gerald “Jerry” R. and Cheryl Lawson, all of Orangeburg; 1 sister, Mildred Young of Orangeburg; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren.

Memorials: First Baptist Church, 1240 Russell Street, Orangeburg, SC 29115 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Charles Wickenberg Jr.

COLUMBIA — Services for Charles Herbert Wickenberg Jr., former associate editor of The State, will be Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church, 6408 Bridgewood Road. Burial will be immediately following in the church cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home Devine Street Chapel is assisting the family.

Born April 5, 1923, in Charleston, S.C., he died Thursday, Dec. 9 at his home at Still Hopes, the Episcopal retirement home in West Columbia. He was 81.

“Wick,” as he was known by colleagues and friends, was an Eagle Scout and attended Columbia public schools, The Citadel, and the Universities of South Carolina and North Carolina. Mr. Wickenberg served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II.

He began his professional journalism career in 1946. While editor of the University of South Carolina’s student newspaper, The Gamecock, he was hired by United Press and sent to Raleigh, N.C., to cover the Legislature.

After his wire service beginnings, he became a political writer in 1949 for The Charleston News and Courier until he was recalled by the Marines to service in the Korean War.

When he returned to South Carolina, he served as executive secretary to Gov. George Bell Timmerman, and in 1958 became the South Carolina Bureau Chief for The Charlotte Observer.

Mr. Wickenberg joined The State in 1963 as its first governmental affairs editor. He served as executive news editor of The State and The Columbia Record, public affairs editor of The State and was named associate editor of The State in 1972.

His awards include selection as South Carolina newsman of the year in 1963, and a national award by the Atomic Industrial Forum for his writing and reporting on nuclear energy. He received a citation from the Air Force Association in 1972 for his project on Vietnam prisoners of war. Mr. Wickenberg also traveled to Vietnam in 1970 with Texas philanthropist Ross Perot in an effort to free American POWs.

Mr. Wickenberg’s other activities included being president of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce in 1972, chairman of the founding committee of St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church, trustee of the (John C.) West Foundation and director of the South Carolina Nature Conservancy. He was a member of Forest Lake Club.

Mr. Wickenberg was married for 53 years to the former Margaret Gall of Batesburg. They have three children: The Rev. Elizabeth Wickenberg Ely (wife of Duncan Cairnes Ely) of Columbus, N.C., and Nancy Cobb (Mrs. G. Thomas Cobb) and Ann Williamson (Mrs. L. Dean Williamson), both of Columbia.

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Mrs. Kelly Williamson Johnston, Benjamin George Cobb, Charles Thomas Cobb, Taylor Crawford Williamson and Penn Wickenberg Ely; and one great-granddaughter Hayley Ann Johnston.

In addition to his grandsons, pallbearers will be his godson Daniel Richardson Sprott Jr. and his grandson-in-law Billy Johnston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6408 Bridgewood Road, Columbia, SC 29206.

The family will be at the Cobb home, 3509 Greenleaf Road, Columbia, SC 29206 Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and at the church immediately following the burial.

Marguerite Cartee

COLUMBIA — Service for Marguerite McQuilkin Cartee, 83, will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Laurel Baptist Church, South Congaree, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Columbia International University, Wycliffe Bible Translators. Visitation will be Sunday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel.

Mrs. Cartee, wife of the late Clifford Cartee, died Friday, December 10, 2004. Born in Abington, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Robert C. and Marguerite Lambie McQuilkin. A member of Laurel Baptist Church, she taught in public schools, served on the faculty of Columbia International University and also served as a missionary.

Surviving are daughters, Evelyn Cartee Hopkins of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., Ruth Cartee Spires of West Columbia, Mittie Cartee Gunnell of Dallas, Ga., Esther Cartee Millsapp of Dallas, Ga., Beverly Cartee Hutchinson of Gaston, Ginny Cartee Ziegler of Spartanburg and Margarita Cartee Harrison of Gaston; brother, John Robertson McQuilkin of Columbia; sisters, Virginia M. Bowers of Charlotte, N.C., Aimee McQuilkin of Penney Farms, Fla. and Anne M. Priest of Columbia; eighteen grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by son, Arthur Cartee.

Walton Carroll Sr.

COLUMBIA — Walton Douglas Carroll, Sr., 83, died Thursday, December 9, 2004, at Palmetto Health Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Carroll was the son of the late John Mayon Carroll, Sr. and Corinne Wood Carroll and brother of the late John M. Carroll, Jr. He was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, serving in numerous areas including twelve years on Church Council and was honored as a Lifetime Council member, Sunday School teacher and Boy Scout leader. He was educated in Columbia Public Schools and attended the University of South Carolina.

Mr. Carroll was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He served as a B-17 pilot in the European Theatre, having completed thirty combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and Presidential Citation Award.

Mr. Carroll was a food service salesman with Food One Inc. of Charlotte, N.C., retiring in 1990.

Mr. Carroll is survived by his wife of sixty years, Margaret Dreher Carroll; son and daughter-in-law, Walton D., Jr. and Jerolyn Long Carroll of Savannah, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret (Peggy) Carroll and Jerry F. Wilkinson of Cary, N.C., Virginia Carroll and Curtis E. Coleman, Jr. of Columbia; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Edward Hart; sisters-in-law, Margaret F. Carroll, A. Frances Dreher, Rosalie Dreher and Betty Joe Tucker; grandchildren, Emily Carroll Holzman (M. Walter), W. Douglas Carroll III (Virginia Ewaldsen), Curtis E. (Rett) Coleman III, R. Austin Coleman, Samuel F. Wilkinson; and great-grandsons, John Walter and Raleigh William Holzman.

Services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church with interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Saturday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Ebenezer Lutheran Church General Fund, 1301 Richland Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.
