Herbert Junius Jr.

Herbert “Bo Bo” Junius Jr., 43, of 1046 Governor Richardson Road, Summerton, husband of Janet Bannister Junius, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, in Clarendon County as the result of an automobile accident.

Born March 25, 1960, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Rachel Oliver Junius and the late Herbert Junius Sr. He was a member of Greater St. Phillip RUME Church. He was a 1977 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He was employed by EMS/American Griabon Inc. He served his country for five years in the United States Navy with an honorable discharge in 1989 and two years in the Reserves.

Survivors, besides his wife and mother of Summerton, include four sons, Lashaun Fremorris, Tyrone Donnel, Darius O’Mar and Justin Raquan Junius of the home; two brothers, Willie Junius of Summerton and James (Lucille) Junius of Thomasville, N.C.; three sisters, Rosena (Elijah) Briggs, Jackie (Moses) Jones and Sadie (Edmond) Scott of Summerton; and a goddaughter, Jaleesa Bowman.

Services were held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton. The Revs. Melvin J. Capers, pastor, and Warren Hatcher officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Amos Hatcher and J. Clark.

Burial followed at Greater St. Phillip RUME Church, Pinewood.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Daniel Harvin Jr.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Daniel Harvin Jr., 59, died March 3, 2004, at Brooklyn Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Born March 17, 1944, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, he was the son of Hattie Mae Mellerson Harvin and the late Daniel Harvin Sr. He attended Springhill Elementary School in Summerton. In his youth, he began his journey at Triumph Holiness Church and later joined St. John Baptist Church, serving as trustee and deacon. He had worked as a chef for B&G Restaurant, machine technician at Concourse Nursing Home and at Baine Window Cleaning Co.

Survivors, besides his wife Jewelean Harvin of the home, include three children, Gregory Harvin, Reginald Harvin and Theresa Harvin; a granddaughter, Kelli Grant; a companion, Rose Sabb; a mother, Hattie Mae Mellerson Harvin; three sisters, Bernice Conyers, Azalee Harvin-Martin and Eulease Bowman; and two brothers, Alex Harvin and William “Billy” Harvin.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Queen E. Marks and Hester V. Harvin.

Services were held on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Fellowship Baptist Church, West Huggins Street in Manning. The Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Sylvester Hicks.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Fernande Harbiston

WALTERBORO – Mrs. Fernande “Paulette” Harbiston, 77, wife of Mr. James “Jim” Harbiston, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Colleton Medical Center.

Mrs. Harbiston was born Feb. 20, 1927, in Merville, France, and was the daughter of the late Louis Piquet and Emilienne Montagne Piquet. She was a former seamstress with Manhattan Dress Factory in Charleston and was a charter member of Edgewood Baptist Church, where she was a former nursery assistant.

Survivors, besides her husband of 58 years, include a son, Robert W. “Bobby” Harbiston of Summerville; daughter Jacquie Harbiston of Summerton; three grandchildren, Amber Hope Harbiston, Faith Danielle Harbiston and Katie Brooke Harbiston of Walterboro.

She was preceded in death by a son, Louis Harbiston.

Services were held on Friday, March 12, 2004, in Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro chapel. The Rev. Ralph Warren officiated the service.

Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Colleton County Relay for Life, 5900 Core Road, Charleston, S.C.

Carnell Gamble Jr.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Carnell Gamble Jr., 47, died March 3, 2004, at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Born Jan. 14, 1957, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Carnell Gamble Sr. and the late Annie Mae Wilson Gamble. He received his formal education in the District of Columbia public school system. He was a graduate of Knoxville College, Knoxville, Tenn., earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He worked with special needs in the George Washington, D.C. public schools system charter schools.

Survivors, besides his father, Carnell Gamble Sr., include his maternal grandmother, Lillie Mae Wilson of Manning; four sisters, Elveria (Clifton) Wallace, Annie Mae Parker, Vivian L. Gamble and the Rev. Brenda C. Plater; three nephews; and three nieces.

Services were held on Thursday, March 11, 2004, in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning. The Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon and Minister Ethel Sweat.

Burial followed in St. Matthews Cemetery.

L. Wayne Nunnery

Lawrence Wayne Nunnery, 52, husband of Patricia Gibson Nunnery, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at his home in the Home Branch Community of Manning.

Born Oct. 27, 1951, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Clarence Edward and Jacqueline Scurry Brunson Nunnery. He was a shipping and receiving technician for International Paper in Sumter.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a son, Capt. Jason Paul Nunnery of Manning; two brothers, Kenny Nunnery of Rembert and David Nunnery of Sumter; two sisters, Theresa McElveen of Thompson, Ga., and Mary Frances Hodge of Sumter; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Nunnery.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, March 21, 2004, in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Hall officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Pendergrass

BALTIMORE – Ernest “Bee” Pendergrass, husband of Barbara Pendergrass, died March 12, 2004, at a Baltimore hospital in Baltimore.

He was a son of the late Enoch and Jettie Pendergrass and the brother of Deacon James Pendergrass of the Sugar Hill community of Manning.

John M. Rebar

John M. Rebar, 54, of Manning, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after an illness.

Born in Scranton, Pa., he was the son of John and Mary Rebar of Dunmore, Pa. He was a member of the United States Air Force and continued to work at Shaw Air Force Base following his active duty. John was a hard worker who enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, the tropics and NASCAR.

Survivors include his father and mother, John and Mary of Dunmore, Pa.; a sister, Jean Marie Boswell of Hagerstown, Md.; a son, John, his wife, Kristen, and their daughter, Carly, all of Hollywood, Fla.

A private service was held in Throop, Pa., Friday, March 19, 2004.

Memorials may be made to the Tuomey Foundation c/o Jean C. Watson, Oncology Unit, 129 N. Washington St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Roberta J. Schmitt

Mrs. Roberta Julie Schmitt, 59, widow of Raymond L. Schmitt, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born May 3, 1944, in Colleton County, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Vera Suggs Raymond. She attended Manning Assembly of God.

Surviving are a son, Julius O’Neal of Walterboro; a daughter, Ellen O’Neal of Seattle, Wash.; three sisters, Mary Hiers of Lodge, Lula Bell Benton of Walterboro and Helen Jones of Manning; three grandchildren, Cassidy, Scott and Terry Ray O’Neal.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 20, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Sam Neal officiating.

A graveside service was held on Monday, March 22, 2004, in Beaufort National Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Vincent L. Stephens Jr.

Vincent L. “Windy” Stephens Jr., 56, soul mate of Ms. Helen Foster, entered eternal rest Sunday, March 14, 2004, with his family by his side.

Born in Lee County, he was the son of the late Bernice C. Stephens and the late Vincent L. Stephens Sr. Mr. Stephens was a self-employed roofer and an avid fisherman.

Surviving are his former wife, Charlie Lewis Swiney Stephens; three sons, Vincent L. “Scooter” Stephens III, Nick Swiney and wife, Shannon, Timothy Swiney and wife, Michelle, all of Sumter; a daughter, Debbie Turley and husband, Robert, of Alabama; three brothers, James Caples, John Stephens and Cary Stephens Sr. and wife, Sharon, all of Sumter; two sisters, Earliene Tennant and husband, Thomas, of Summerton and Judy Hershberger and Henry Page of Sumter; seven grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a multitude of loving friends; and a special friend, Alan Weaver.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Barfield and the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.

Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

David Way

Mr. David Way, 27, of Sumter, died Sunday morning, March 14, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston.

Born Jan. 18, 1977, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mr. Isaiah Parker and Ms. Vangeline Way Parker.

David attended the public schools of Clarendon and Sumter counties and graduated from Sumter High School. David was a compassionate and caring person who loved everyone.

Survivors include his father, Mr. Isaiah Parker of Manning; mother, Ms. Vangeline Way Parker of the home; two brothers, Mr. Charles and Mr. Michael Parker of Sumter; one sister, Miss Tasha Parker of Goldsboro, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Mr. Silas and Mrs. Eliza Ann Brunson of Manning; paternal grandparents, Mr. Moses and Mrs. Mary Parker of Manning; maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Leah Brown of Paxville; one nephew, Rassan Edward.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 19, 2004, Trinity Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Larry Weston, pastor, assisted by the Revs. J. Jackson and L.T. James. Burial followed in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Joanne E. Langston

Joanne E. Langston, 55, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born July 16, 1948, in Florence, she was a daughter of Lillie Bullard Langston and the late Joseph Sanford Langston of Manning.

Surviving, besides her mother, are a sister, Margaret Porter of Manning; two aunts, Bessie Pruitt of Bennettsville and Lib Isgett of Florence; two nephews; and a niece.

A funeral service will be held at a later date.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
