Royce R. Fernandez

Royce Rawlin “T.D.” Fernandez, 54, husband of Kathleen Seigler Fernandez, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 14, 1949, in Sacramento, Calif., he was the son of the late Primitivo Aranda Bautista and Jetta Winifred Smith Bautista. He was a Vietnam Army veteran, an avid motorcyclist, a member of ABATE (American Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education), MMA (Modified Motorcycle Association), and a retired Northern Rebel. He belonged to the Miwok Indian Tribe and his native name was “Two Dogs Running.”

Survivors, besides his wife, include five sons, Anthony and Jordan Fernandez, and Johnny Hamilton, all of Manning, Christopher Fernandez of Oregon, and Gary Fernandez of California; four daughters, Clarissa Fernandez of Africa, Lorena, Leilani, and Katie Fernandez of California; four sisters, Nena, Germaine, and Lawanda, of California, and Prima of Missouri; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at 7 p.m., Friday, June 13, at the residence, 1309 Waynes Drive, Manning. The Rev. John Matthews officiated.

Memorial-may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Major McFadden Jr.

Major McFadden Jr., 78, husband of Clara Fulton McFadden, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia.

Born Nov. 10, 1924, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Major McFadden Sr. and Eddie Burgess McFadden. He received his formal education at the Goodwill Parochial School. At an early age, he sought the need for a personal Savior and joined Melina Presbyterian Church. He was an active member of the trustee and usher boards and the men’s council. He was a 57-year member of Golden Gate Lodge No. 78. He retired from the Campbell Soup Co. in 1987 after 18 years.

Survivors include four sons; Major (Ella) McFadden III of Baltimore, Md., Delbert McFadden of Alcolu, Kenneth McFadden of Riverdale, Md., and Jake McFadden of Rembert; three daughters, Clarita, Senorita and Cynthia McFadden of Landover, Md.; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Three sons; James Allen “Spark,” William “Dub,” and Eddie “Jackie”; two sisters, Ruth and Angie Kennedy; and one brother, Roy McFadden preceded him in death.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 12, at the Melina Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Carnell Hampton officiated.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Pallbearers included members of trustee and board and Golden Gate Lodge No. 78 members.

Floral bearers included the Presbyterian Women and St. Mary’s Chapter No. 156.

Margaret G. T. Sims

Margaret “Maggie” Gertrude Timmons Sims, 87, widow of Eugene H. Sims, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at a local nursing center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late William Timothy Timmons and the late Eunice Hodge Timmons. Mrs. Sims was a member of Sumter Bible Church and was retired from Rowe’s Drug Store.

Survivors include two sons, Harvey J. Sims and Wayne T. Sims, of Sumter; a sister, Lucile Barnes of Sumter; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert E. Sims and James H. Sims.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 4, in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Rev. James Houtz officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Jerry Hyatt, Herbert Hudson, William Barnes, Harvin Barnes, Wayne Sims Jr. and Nelson Johnson.

Roger W. Byrdic

Roger William Byrdic, 67, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Paul Monroe and Gertie Cantley Byrdic. He was a retired farmer, a member of Greeleyville United Methodist Church, and a member of the South Carolina National Guard.

Survivors include four daughters, Cynthia Delores Festa of Italy, Linda Dianne Himsey of Columbia, Pamela Jean Byrdic of Irmo, and Sharon Elizabeth Baddar of Columbia; a son, Roger Carl Byrdic of Columbia; two sisters, Jeretta Brasington of Summerton and Ila Jenvia Laird of Birmingham, Ala; two brothers, Pete Byrdic of Conway and O’Neil Byrdic of Kingstree.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Roger William Byrdic Jr. and Kevin James Byrdic.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Grover Mixon officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Kingstree Memorial Gardens.

Reubin Mitchum

Reubin Mitchum, 87, husband of Carrie Lee Hodge Mitchum, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Sept. 8, 1915, he was the son of the late Deschamps and Eliza Kelly Mitchum. Mr. Mitchum worked for Clarendon County, the State of South Carolina, and retired from farming. He was a charter member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, deacon, and trustee. He was a devoted husband and loving father.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years of Manning and four daughters, J. Almeita Hovermale, Carolyn Melton, Barbara (Raymond) Alsbrook and Angela M. Nexsen (Jerry) of Manning; a son, Joseph Reubin Mitchum of Manning; a sister; Geneva Richburg of Manning; 14 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 8 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Aaron Mitchum and a daughter, Deborah Mahoney.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 10, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Charlie Salter, A. W. Elliott and Russell Riggs officiated the service. Burial followed in Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church Women’s Ministries, 3016 Hwy. 260, Manning, SC 29102.

William Johnson

William “Cry” Johnson, 69, died Nov. 4, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born June 4, 1934, in the Cypress Fork community of Alcolu, he was the son of the late William Johnson Sr. and Bertha English Samuel and stepson of the late Frank Samuel Sr. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School. In his youth, he attended Cypress Fork AME Church, and he was a veteran in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two sons, Wendell and Keith Johnson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Porsche Renee Johnson, Tai Amber Johnson and Akil Johnson, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Frank Samuel Jr. of Alcolu and Albert Johnson of Boston; one sister, Flora S. (Lucious) Green of Alcolu; three aunts, Ada Fleming of Lake City, Minnie Lee Samuel and Bertha Giles, of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning. The Rev. W.J. Frierson officiated. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Alice G. Ragin

Mrs. Alice Lurena Green Ragin, 86, widow of Robert Ragin, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Feb. 10, 1917, in the St. Paul community, Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Iseam and Elnora Green. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Liberty Hill AME Church where she served as a member of the gospel choir, missionary department, stewardess board and willing workers club. She was a member of the NAACP Clarendon Branch and the Christian Burial Aid Association.

Survivors include two sons, Herbert Ragin (Febbie) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Hezekiah Ragin of Summerton; one stepson, Carl Graham (Henritta) of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight daughters, Shirley Caldwell of Baltimore, Md., Elnora Parson of Staten Island, N.Y., Isamell Ragin of Bronx, N.Y., Melvena Lyons of New York City, Mary Foxx (Dewayne) of the home, Laronastine Johnson (Rufus) of Houston, Texas, Wonder Knowles (Lemuel) of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Delphine Ragin of Orlando, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Julia Ann Wilson (Darryl) of Sunrise, Fla.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Charlie “C.P.” Ragin.

Services were at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, at Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton. The Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, officiated the service.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included the men of the church and friends of the family.

Floral bearers included missionaries of the church and friends of the family.

Leroy Rhames

Leroy Rhames, husband of Willean Ragin Rhames, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born July 9, 1935, in Manning, he was the son of the late Willie Sr. and Sarah Bell Pugh Rhames.

He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He lived in New York City for more than 40 years. He retired after 35 years of service as a porter.

Survivors include his wife, two god-daughters, Quantasia Scar-borough of Bronx, N.Y., and Maeshea Smythe of Laurington, N.Y.; three brothers, Isaac Rhames and Willie Rhames Jr., of Wilmington, N.C., and Eugene Rhames of New York City; and three sisters, Sarah Smith of Darlington, and Helen Clark and Victoria Farrow, of Wilmington.

Services were Tues., Aug. 12, at St. Paul Holiness Church in Summerton. The Rev. Esther Madison, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by minister Quantae Ragin and Ella Johnson.

Burial followed in Calvary Memorial Cemetery, Wilmington, N.C.

Pallbearers and floral bearers included cousins and friends of the family.

Hugh Dingle Jr.

DETROIT, Mich. – Hugh Dingle Jr., 75, husband of Luvivian Harper, died Aug. 10, 2003, at his home.

Born Dec. 28, 1928, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Hugh Dingle Sr. and Sibbie Lou Dingle. He joined St. Mark AME Church at an early age. He was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton.

Survivors include four sons, Ronald Dingle (Ladonna) of Stafford, Va., James Dingle (Theresa), Clifford Dingle (Donna), and Carlton Dingle (Kim) of Detroit, Mich.; two daughters, Valerie Dyer (Michael) and Luvivian Lorett Dingle of Dale City, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Abie Harper (Leone) of Philadelphia, Pa., and Laurie Harper (Leona) of Statesville, N.C. ; and a very special friend, Mary Ann Robertson of Detroit.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Aug. 17, at St. Mark AME Church, Summerton.

The Rev. Ernest Brown, pastor, officiated the service.

Burial followed in the St. Mark Memorial Garden Cemetery.

Ellie C. Driggers

Ellie Camlin Driggers, 76, of Turbeville, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late William H. Driggers and Betty E. Coker Driggers. He was a World War II veteran, where he served in the U.S. Army, and he was a member of the Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Ronnie E. Driggers (Cindy) of Turbeville; four sisters, Anna Myrle Osborne and Mae Welch of Turbeville, Thelma Knotts (Walter) of Gilbert, and Rebecca Simeral (Harry) of Duquesne; four brothers, Harry L. Driggers (Rosa Lee) Sammie Driggers (Daisy) and Bobby Driggers (Brenda) of Turbeville, and DeLeon Driggers (Beverly) of Chester; one grandson, Justin Driggers; and a special friend, Mrs. Olive Mellette.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Noveleen Driggers; two sisters, Mildred DuBose and Gaynelle Matthews; one brother Lindbergh Driggers; one half sister, Elise Green; and two half brothers, Douglas Driggers and Gene Driggers..

Memorials may be made to the Free Will Baptist Children’s Home of Turbeville.
