Franklin S. Adger

Franklin S. Adger, 51, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at his residence, 9 Thayer Court, Nashua, N.H.

Born Oct. 7, 1951, in Manning, he was the son of Elizabeth Ludd Adger and the late Sylvester Adger Sr. At an early age, he joined St. Mark Baptist Church, Silver, and was baptized. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, where he was a 1969 graduate of the Manning Training High School. Upon graduation, he later joined the United States Army, where he served for 13 years. During his tenure in the military, he received numerous awards, medals and commendations of accomplishments to include Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and M-16 Expert Qualifications Badge.

Survivors, besides his mother, include three brother, John Earl Adger (Juanita) and Sylvester Adger Jr., of Sumter, and Jerome Adger of Manning; five sisters, Minnie Thomas and Sarah A. Law (Randy) of Sumter, Betty J. Lyons (Reggie) and Melissa Adger, of Manning, and Barbara J. Adger of Augusta, Ga.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends whom he shared a very special relationship with.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn; and three brothers, James LeGrant, Joseph and Leonard Adger Sr.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sat., Aug. 23, at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Silver. The Rev. W. J. Chandler, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Derrie Grant, the Revs. Jimmy Reeves and Mitchell Adger.

Burial followed in the St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Freddie Baxter Sr.

Freddie “Freddy” Baxter Sr., 72, widower of Ophelia Blanding Baxter, died Aug. 18, 2003, at his residence, 38 Dant St., Sumter.

Born Nov. 3, 1930, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late James T. and Malvenia Bosier Baxter. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, where he served diligently and faithfully as a member. “Mr. Freddy,” as he was affectionately known to many, served his community as the “neighborhood barber.” In Jan. 1953, he enlisted as a member of the United States Army. After serving his country with honors, he was employed by Korn Industries until 1969, when his health began to fail.

Survivors include two sons, Ransom “Bobby” Baxter (Louise) of Columbia and Freddie Baxter Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Pearlie Baxter and Henrietta Scott (Bruce), of Sumter; two brothers, Roosevelt Baxter (Rosa) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, special relatives, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one son, Henry Baxter.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Fri., Aug. 22, at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Silver. The Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Dr. C. Richburg, the Rev. J.H. Pringle, George Johnson, and Nate Brock.

Burial followed in the St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Verdell Tappin

Mr. Verdell Tappin, 70, widower of Mrs. Katie Jane Keels, died Aug. 13, 2003, at his residence.

Born Dec. 2, 1932, in Memphis, Tenn., he was the son of the late Mr. Harry Tappin Sr. and the late Mrs. Georgia McChristian Tappin. Mr. Tappin attended the public schools of Memphis, Tenn., and he was employed with the Carib Management Inc., Miami, as general manager. He also attended the Light Hill Baptist Church in the Foreston community.

Survivors include one son, Mr. Rontray Scavella (Sonya) of Miami; three daughters, Miss Allison Tappin of Manning, Miss Krystal Jones of Miami, and Mrs. Stephanie Adderly (Thomas) of Miami; one sister, Mrs. Georgia Mae Cooper of Miami; three grandchildren; six brothers-in-law; and five sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Tappin Jr.; and one sister, Mary Alice Smith.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sat. Aug. 16, in the Light Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Curtis Dingle, Evangelists Earnestine Fleming, Diane Lee, Pearl Robinson, and the Rev. Fred Snider, officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Junky Yard Cemetery.

Elma R. Wells

Elma R. Wells, 87, widow of Glenn H. “Duck” Wells Sr., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003 in National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born Aug. 27, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Badger and Ruth Riggs Ridgeway. Mrs. Wells was a member of Manning United Methodist Church, the Nelle Wells Sunday School Class and the Janie Sprott Circle. She was a seamstress and a homemaker in Clarendon County all of her life. Her joy in life came from her love of her family and friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Elma Glenn Watt (Bob) of Buhl, Idaho; a son, Glenn H. “Bubba” Wells Jr. (Sara) of Manning; five sisters, Hattie Hallman of Columbia, Mae Jenne of Florence, Margaret Oldham, Pansy Ridgeway and Polly Sankus, of Manning; five grandchildren, Jennie Wells of Columbia, Glenn H. Wells III, of Manning, Luke and Kim Watt of Frensco, Calif., Polly Watt of Boise, Idaho, and Brian and Marcia Watt of Kuna, Idaho; a very special niece, Roberta Johnson; and Ann & G. G. Cutter, for whom she had a special love.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Jennie Benton and Rena Harrington; and brothers, H. B. Ridgeway and Delma Ridgeway.

Services were held at 5 p.m., Fri., Aug. 22, in Manning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Debra Quilling officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Steve Shugart and the Rev. Dr. James C. Adams.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Robert Wells, Mickey Sexton, Bill Fenters, Bill Sankus, Wayne Dennis, and Lamar Kennedy.

Memorials may be made to the Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102.

Moses Felder

BRONX, N.Y. — Moses Felder, 55, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.

Born Nov. 17, 1948, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mary Jane Thomas Felder and the late James Felder. He was a 1969 graduate of Scott’s High School.

Survivors include five brothers, Preston and John Felder of Bronx, David, Willie Lee and Arthur Felder of Summerton; and two sisters, Gardenia (Perry) Young and Susan Felder of Brooklyn.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Aaron Felder, in March 2002.

Services were held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at the Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, 4574 Old River Road, Pinewood. The Rev. Warren Hatcher officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl G. Geddings

PINEWOOD – Pearl Victoria Graham Geddings, 80, widow of Johnnie Geddings Sr., died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pinewood, Mrs. Geddings was the daughter of the late Charles Graham and the late Ruth Ardis Graham. Mrs. Geddings was a member of Pinewood Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Johnny Geddings Jr. and Richard Wayne (Lesia) Geddings of Sumter; six daughters, Barbara (Bill) Brewer of Sumter, Polly (Jake) Timmons of Sumter, Jeannie (Pee Wee) Mitchell of Manning, Inez (John) Hill of Pinewood, Diane (H.E.) Floyd of Sumter and Julie (S.K.) Evans of Pinewood; three brothers, Robert Graham and Roddie Graham of Sumter, and Leon (Beebee) Graham of Pinewood; three sisters, Coreene Howard, Maizie Irick and Sara Scoot of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two infant grandsons; an infant great-granddaughter; and a sister, Inez English.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Pinewood Methodist Church. The Rev. Dick Broomall officiated the service. Burial followed in the Pinewood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pinewood Methodist Church, P.O. Box 203, Pinewood, S.C. 29125.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

H. Thomas Hodge Jr.

Hugh Thomas Hodge Jr., 42, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 16, 1961, in Manning, he was the son of Hugh Thomas Hodge Sr. and the late Hazel DuBose Hodge. He was a member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his father of Greeleyville; two sisters, Lydia Jackson and Rose Hodge of Manning; a brother, Juan Hodge of Manning; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Justin Still.

Services were held on Saturday, Dec. 13, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Tony Elliott and Charlie Salter officiated the service. Burial followed in Rehobeth Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Shirley A. Logan

Shirley A. Logan, 48, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born March 23, 1955, in Summerton, she was the daughter of Mary Johnson Logan and the late Steven Logan. She was a member of Taw-Caw Missionary Baptist Church. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Logan of the home; one grandson, Logan Isiah Riley of the home; three brothers, Willie H. Logan of Thomasville, N.C., Frank (Sharon) Logan of Sumter and Moses Logan of Florence; nine sisters, Eartha (James) Bannister and Mary Jo Briggs of White Plains, N.Y., Carolyn (Albert Black) Benbow and Betty A. Logan of Summerton, Ida M. Logan of Bronx, N.Y., Deloris Logan of Manning, Lula M. (Kevin Sr.) Coulbourn of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. and Mattie M. Logan and Bertha M. Logan of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaree and Mary Alice; and one brother, Jimmy.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton. The Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiated the service. Burial followed in the church family plot.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Martin Sr.

Samuel “Sam Bo” Martin Sr., 80, husband of Mary Alice Cummings Martin, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 15, 1923, in the Greeleyville section of Williamsburg County, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary Montgomery Martin. He received his education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal savior. He was a deacon at Fourth Crossroads Baptist Church and Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church. He retired after 30 years in the custodial department of Clarendon County School District 2.

Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Martin of the home, one son, Samuel Martin Jr. of Boston; four daughters, Thelma (Jerome) Brisbon Sr. of Baltimore, Fannie (Basil) Collymore of Boston, Pamela Wilson of Manning and Carolyn (Timothy) Sweatt of Columbia; one adopted daughter, Francena (Lawrence) Pugh of Manning; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Frances and Maebell Johnson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 13, at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville Highway 261, Manning. The Rev. Henry Pressley, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Joseph Pringle, Dr. Cokely Richburg, Rufus Gaymon, Major Lloyd and Elder Roosevelt Boyd. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Sherwood Lucius Morris

Sherwood Lucius Morris, 67, husband of Frances Haley Morris, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born August 27, 1936, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Samuel Lucius and Annie Elmore Morris. He was a retired truck driver, a U. S. Navy veteran, served in the National Guard for six years, and was of the Free Will Baptist faith.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, include two daughters, Dolly Hutchinson and Cindy Matthews of Manning; four sons, David Morris of Bennettsville, Sherwood L. Morris, Jr. of Seneca, Bryan and Michael Morris of Manning; two brothers, Autry Morris of New Zion and Wendell Morris of Alcolu; three sisters, Teresa Dukes of Turbeville, Elaine Lowery of Alcolu, and Ruth Rudd of Holly Hill; twenty-three grandchildren; two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 15, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. David Hutchinson officiated the service, assisted by The Rev. Bennie Turner. Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
