Thelma R. Pompey

GREELEYVILLE — Thelma Louise Robinson Pompey, 77, widow of Willie Pompey Sr., died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 13, 1926, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Ben Robinson and Eddie Pearson Robinson. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Union Cypress AME Church. After marrying, she joined Pine Grove AME Church on Jan. 12, 1946, where she served faithfully on the missionary society, senior choir, YWCA and stewardess boards. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Pride of Foreston No. 131.

Survivors include five sons, Willie (Lelia) Pompey Jr. of Manning, Frank (Elaine) Pompey, Alphonza (the Rev. Eloise) Pompey, Burnett (Diane) Pompey and Bobby (Judy) Pompey of Greeleyville; one daughter, Jannie Mae (Larry) Benton of Philadelphia; one stepdaughter, Glona (Robert) Johnson of Missouri; two sisters, Christine Robinson and Carrie Johnson of Philadelphia; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and James Robinson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Pine Grove AME Church, Old River Road, Greeleyville. The Rev. Francis Gathers, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Sam Miller and O’Donald Dingle. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle S. Poston

Myrtle McRee Scott Poston, 72, widow of Lyde L. Poston, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, in Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Nov. 12, 1931, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late Richard Manning Scott Sr. and the late Gladys Myrtle Kolb Scott. She was a retired healthcare worker, a volunteer for American Red Cross, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Joelle (Larry) Osteen of Sumter and Donna (Todd) Hennies Stafford of Lexington, N.C.; a son, Wallace (Ann) Hennies of Summerville; three sisters, Carrie Lee Ardis of Paxville, Annette Ridgill and Gladys Burke of Santee; eight brothers, DeLeon Scott of Summerville, Wallace Scott and Wayne Scott of Paxville, Everette Scott of Sumter, Ronald Howard Scott of Manning, Leslie Scott of Charleston, Stanley Scott of Santee and Floyd Scott of Goose Creek; three grandchildren, Jennie Holcombe of Sumter, Layne Osteen of Mayesville, Brian Stafford of Lexington and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Scott.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 in Paxville Cemetery. The Revs. Gene Mosier and Richard Hudson officiated the service.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Liston Clifton Reynolds

TIMMONSVILLE - Liston Reynolds, 81, of 1501 Quietude Rd., died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003.

He was the son of the late Eugene Benjamin Reynolds and Annie Christmas Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps during World War II where he received the Purple Heart for honorable service in Okinawa. He was a member of Benton Masonic Lodge of Timmonsville, the Florence Chapter of the NARFE and the American Legion of Timmonsville. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after having been a mail carrier in Timmonsville for many years. He was later appointed post master at Olanta and continued there until his retirement. He was a member of Lamar First Baptist Church where he faithfully served for many years. He was a member of the Deacon Board several times and had been the chairman. He was a past Sunday school superintendent, church treasurer and was on many church committees.

Survivors, besides his wife Maxine Strong Reynolds of the home, include three sons, Clifton LaFoye (Dottie) Reynolds of Sumter, Phillip Donnie (Brenda) Reynolds of San Antonio, and Christopher Alan (Jessica Richards) Reynolds of Timmonsville; stepsons Donald (Diana) Long of Bath, N.Y., and Kevin (Patty) Long of Society Hill; stepdaughters Betsy Shumpert of Lexington and Kimberly (Wayne) Collins of Timmonsville, 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and also three sisters, Sarah McElveen of Manning, Joretta Reynolds of Timmonsville and Marie Gainey of Bethune. He also leaves several special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Matthews Reynolds; two daughters, Ann Lee Reynolds Daniel and Kathy Lynn Reynolds; two brothers, Carl Reynolds and Eugene Reynolds; and a sister Thelma Reynolds Knight.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 15, 2003 in the Lamar First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Byrd Cemetery in Timmonsville.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Lamar First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 431, Lamar, S.C. 29069 or to McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29501.

Layton-Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Melvin D. Ardis Sr.

Melvin Duval Ardis Sr., 72, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Henry Corneilus Ardis and the late Eva Ardis Ardis. Mr. Ardis was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include a son, Melvin D. “Val” (Julie) Ardis Jr. of Scranton; four brothers, MacBeth Ardis, Wilbur Ardis, and Willis Ardis of Sumter, and Louie Ardis of Paxville; a granddaughter, Casey Ardis; two grandsons, Michael Shipley and Johnny Shipley.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Laurie Tobias; three brothers, Leslie Ardis, Russell Ardis and William “Bill” Ardis.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, in the Pinewood Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Clanton officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to Crosswell Baptist Church, 604 Mathis St., Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C., 29210.

Roxie E. Bair

FLORENCE – Roxie Etheleene “Sis” Mims Bair, 73, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at her residence.

Ms. Bair was born in Clarendon County, the daughter of the late Millard Rush and Alma Louise Morris Mims Hyman. She retired as a telephone operator after 35 years of service with Southern Bell Telephone Co. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church and the ladies Sunday school class, a member of the Bellsouth Telephone Pioneers and a member of the American Legion Post No. 160, Auxiliary. She was married to the late Robert Lide Bair Sr.

Survivors include one son, Robert Lide (June) Bair of Florence; one daughter, Susan (Jim) Moser of East Wenatchee, Wash.; a sister, Milleree Lamb of Woodruff; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Mims.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2003, in the chapel of Florence Memorial Gardens.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Carolina Hospice, P.O. Box 100550, Florence, SC 29501.

Theodora F. Breedin

Theodora Felton Breedin, 92, widow of L. Spencer Breedin, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born Jan. 21, 1911, in Townville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Brown Felton and the late Maggie Speares Felton. She grew up in Columbia, graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina, where in her junior year she was elected to membership in Eta Sigma Phi, honorary Ancient Language Society and served as president her senior year. In her senior year, she was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, National Honorary Society. She taught school at Calhoun Falls, Abbeville, and Manning High School. She was a charter member and served as first full-time president of the Manning Garden Club, and was president of Manning Council of Garden Clubs. She served as secretary and treasurer, a charter member and first president of Clarendon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Manning United Methodist Church, where she served as president of Manning United Methodist Women, chairperson of the Commission of Missions, secretary of the Administrative Board, teacher of college students and served as one of the teachers of the Ladies Bible Class.

Survivors include nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 19, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Debra Quilling officiated the service. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102.

Margaret M. McClam

LAKE CITY – Margaret M. McClam, 72, wife of Winston McClam Sr., died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born in New Zion, she was the daughter of the late John and Josephine McFadden. She was retired co-owner of McClam Shoe Store in Kingstree. She was a member of Sunbeam Chapter No. 224 OES.

Survivors include one son, Winston Byah McClam Jr. of Lake City; three daughters, Dorothy (Jerome) McElveen of Lake City, Vela (Donald) Mitchell of Symra, Ga., and Carolyn McClam of Bowie, Md.; two sisters, Geneva McFadden of Lake City and Allie Ham of New Zion; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 19, at St. John United Methodist Church in Lake City. The Rev. Roosevelt Geddis officiated the service. Burial followed in Rest Lawn Cemetery.

Woodrow T. Moss

Woodrow Thomas Moss, 62, husband of Janet Parks Moss, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, in the V.A. Medical Center in Charleston.

Born Oct. 22, 1941, in Troy, N.Y., he was the son of the late George and Vera Coranco Moss. He was a retired truck mechanic and was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, include a son, Woodrow Joseph Moss of New York State; a stepson, David Bellnier of Beaufort; two daughters, Denise Terry of W. Galway, N.Y., and Elaine Bellnier of Beaufort; a half-brother, Paul Moss of Albany, N.Y.; two sisters; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

F. Bobby Turbeville

Floyd Bobby Turbeville, 67, husband of Evangelina Salazar Turbeville, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, in Quality Care in Waco, Texas.

Born in Tabor City, N.C., he was the son of the late Luther and Gladys Turbeville. He was retired manager for a loan company and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Rosebud, Texas; two daughters, Deana Turbeville Wilder and Debra Turbeville Harrington of Manning; a stepson, Michael Dixon of Rosebud, Texas; his mother, Mrs. Maggie Turbeville of Tabor City, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Fowler of Tabor City and Catherine Cooper of Conway; five brothers, David Turbeville of Panama City Beach, Fla., Jimmy Turbeville and Maxie Turbeville of Tabor City, Donald Turbeville of Trinity, N.C., and Eddie Turbeville of Sunset Beach, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date in North Carolina.

Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering of First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102, or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Marquita E. Dupree

Marquita Elaine Dupree, 31, died July 19, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born July 29, 1972, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of James Wilferd Dupree and Caretha Lasaine Dupree. She accepted Christ in her life and became a devoted member of Biggers AME Church. She served on the usher board and youth choir. She was a 1990 graduate of Manning High School, Manning. She was employed with Federal Mogul in Sumter.

Survivors besides her parents, James and Caretha L. Dupree of Manning, include two daughters, Raven Jamay Dupree and Chynna Dupree, both of the home; one god brother, Justice (Tonya) Dingle of Manning; two sisters, Winifred Dupree and Amerintha Dupree, both of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Biggers AME Church, Manning, with the Rev. Andrew Jordan, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sam Whack Jr. and Bishop John Warren.

Burial followed in the Muldrow Cemetery.
