James C. Brown

PENNINGTON GAP, Va. – James C. “Jim” Brown, 68, husband of Ruth Brown, died Saturday, March 27, 2004, at his home in Pennington Gap, Va.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Heyward Brown and the late Mattie Brown. He was a member of Sumter Baptist Temple and was a 1954 graduate of Edmunds High School. He was retired from the U.S. Army with 20 years of service and also served with the Army Reserve for five years. He served two tours in Vietnam, the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg and the 173rd Airborne in Vietnam, and was the recipient of four purple hearts. He was also a correctional officer with the Wateree Correctional Center and the Columbia Correctional Institute.

Survivors include his wife of Pennington Gap, Va.; a sister, Avanell Hendrix of Sumter; a nephew, Randy Osteen of Manning; and a niece, Annell Smith of Summerton.

Funeral services were held on March 31, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Richardson officiating.

Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to the Sumter Baptist Temple, 2295 Harper St., Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Edwin Wilson

Edwin Wilson, 78, husband of Fannie Billups Wilson, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Edwin Wilson Sr. and the late Grace Reynolds Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a retired sales manager with Bill Schultz Chevrolet Co. in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Surviving are his wife of Manning; two sons, Ed (Sandy) Wilson and Jerry Wilson of Sumter; a sister, Pat (Murr) Brown of Sumter; four stepchildren, Paula Bramlett and James Stewart, both of Florence, Beth Bennett and Patricia Holcombe of North Carolina; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Don Mathis, Treasurer, 145 Coopers Mill Road, Bishopville, S.C. 29010.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Anna Belle B. Stukes

Anna Belle Barnett Stukes, 82, widow of Thomas E. Stukes, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born Dec. 21, 1921, in Russellville, she was a daughter of the late John and Flossie Lambert Barnett. She was retired from Summerton Dry Cleaners and was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Davis Station.

Surviving are three sons, Robert E. (Martha) Stukes, of Big Pine Key, Fla., E.G. (Noonie) Stukes and Timothy R. (Davett) Stukes, both of Summerton; two sisters, Sarah Brinkley and Stella Butler of Charleston; two brothers, Richard Barnett of Charleston and Norman Barnett of Jedburg; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning with the Rev. Bob Allen officiating.

Memorials may be made to Summerton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 35, Summerton, S.C. 29148 or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, c/o Gladys Griffin, 1372 White Oak Drive, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Edith E. Mitchum

Edith Elisa Mitchum, 62, wife of John Wesley Mitchum, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 13, 1942, in Andrews, she was a daughter of the late James Craven and Mary Ruth Carter Griffin. She was a retired seamstress and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are two daughters, Sheila Ridgeway and Eva Lou Rhodus, both of Manning; a son, Howard Lavern Harrington of Manning; a sister, Nell Odom of Warner Robbins, Ga.; a brother, Gene Griffin of Aiken; four half-sisters, Connie Langley, Patricia Ridgeway and Debbie Brogdon of Manning and Sharon Daniels of Sumter; two half-brothers, John Summers of Manning and Edward Summers of Columbia; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kevin Cribb officiating, assisted by the Rev. C.S. Salter.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Elisa Mitchum Fund, c/o Stephens Funeral Home, P.O. Box 176, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Jimmie Gary

Jimmie Gary, 89, Sumter, passed away at his home on July 15, 2004.

Born May 5, 1915, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Mr. Wash Gary and Mrs. Martha Brown Gary. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church in Pinewood. Mr. Gary worked many years for Georgia-Pacific Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Willie Mae Tindal Gary of the home; four sons, Mr. Allen (Loretta) Tindal, Mr. Steve (Teresa) Tindal and Kenneth Tindal, all of Sumter and Mr. Johnnie Tindal of Loretta, Pa.; five daughters, Mrs. Ann (Morgan) Smith of Wildwood, N.J., Mrs. Sandra (Levern) Hill, Mrs. Martha (Johnny) Spann, Ms. Cynthia Bethune and Mrs. Yvette (Roosevelt) Durant, all of Sumter; one sister, Mrs. Mary Bowman of Wilmington, N.C.; 40 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Mt. Pleasant UME Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. James O. Robinson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Presiding Elder Roosevelt Boyd and the Rev. Leroy T. James.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of these arrangements.

James A. Jones

ELLIJAY, Ga. – James Alvin Jones, 68, of Ellijay, Ga., passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2004.

Born April 11, 1936, in Pickens County, he was a son of Freddy E. and Ida Irene Durham Jones. Mr. Jones was a member of the Cartecay Baptist Church in Ellijay, Ga. He retired as a technical sergeant with the U.S. Air Force and was a Vietnam veteran. He was a lifetime member of the DAV.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Jones of Ellijay, Ga.; daughters Patricia Ann Chapman of Easley, Kathy (Andrew) Hodge of Manning, Bonnie (Troy) Brown of Cordova and Debbie McLeod of Sumter; sons Jasoc C. Jones of Ellijay, Ga., James L. (Robyn) Jones of Easley, Richard G. (Julie) Lowery Jr. of Barnwell and Charles A. Lowery of Orangeburg; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Jerry D. Jones of Plantersville and William S. Jones of Manning; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at Cartecay Baptist Church.

Military graveside services were held on Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Westview Cemetery in Liberty.

Arrangements by Logan Funeral Home and Chapel in Ellijay.

Thomas G. Gamble

FLORENCE – Thomas Goodman Gamble, 91, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mr. Gamble was born in Turbeville, a son of the late Dr. Charlton Edwin and Marian Hicks Gamble. He graduated from Turbeville High School and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. After graduation, he was employed by the South Carolina Highway Department, the U.S. Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service and was a licensed land surveyor. In 1947, he formed Gamble Enterprises, which included several businesses in and around the Turbeville area. He retired in 1976.

He served on the annual conference committees in the Southern Methodist Church and on the board of stewards and building committee as a member of the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church. He later became a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Florence, where he faithfully taught Sunday school for 15 years. He was a member of the Fidelity Masonic Lodge No. 394 in Turbeville, the Shriners, the Gideons, and was a former mayor of Turbeville.

Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Viva Calcutt Grantham Gamble of the home; stepson, Terry (Vicki) Grantham of Florence; brother, Julian (Harriett) Gamble of Turbeville; five grandchildren, Wayne (Sally) Grantham, Austin and Charles Grantham, all of Florence, Trisha and Ken Grantham, both of Turbeville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Kenneth Grantham; brother, Charlton E. Gamble; sister, Sarabel Roquemore.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 3, 2004, at Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial followed at Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 306 W. Cherokee Road, Florence, S.C. 29501.

H. Morrison Davis Sr.

Hepburn Morrison Davis Sr., 81, husband of Jocelyn Elmore Davis, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at his home in Summerton.

Born Feb. 22, 1923, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Washington Benbow Davis and the late Ida Morrison Davis. He was a retired Agri-Sales representative. He attended Clemson University and was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church and the men's Bible class. He was a former member of the Santee Electric Coop. Board, a former Clarendon School District 1 trustee, and former member of the Clarendon County Fire Department Advisory Board.

Surviving besides his wife of 55 years of Summerton are a daughter, Deborah Embry and husband, Eddie, of Summerton; a son, Hepburn Morrison “Skip” Davis Jr. and wife, Maryanne, of Summerton; a sister, Mae Davis Tindal and husband, Les, of Pinewood; four grandchildren, F. Davis Mitchum and wife Nancy, Bevin, George and Claudia Davis; two step-grandchildren, Lindsey and Zachary Embry.

Funeral services were held on May 6, 2004, at Summerton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carolyn Malphrus officiated. Burial followed in Benbow Cemetery.
