Pearl M. Brown

Knowing that God is in control, he saw fit to bring the life of Mrs. Pearl Manning Brown to a close on Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home.

Born May 13, 1909, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Mary Manning. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. After moving to Sumter, she joined Allen Chapel AME Church. She served faithfully on the missionary board, Willing Workers and the senior choir until her health failed. Mrs. Brown was an honest Christian woman who loved her church and family unconditionally.

She was married to the late Frank Brown.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Blanche Manning Gibson; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Manning; a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and eight sisters.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 7, 2004, at Allen Chapel AME Church, in Sumter, with the Rev. Harold O. Wilson, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Ruth Maple Oliver, the Rev. Omar Hilton and the Rev. Robert L. Galloway officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

James Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Helen Raulerson Billups

Helen Raulerson Billups, 88, widow of Andrew J. Billups, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born July 31, 1915, in Atlanta, she was a daughter of the late John Leslie and Thelma Geneva Anderson Raulerson. She was a retired LPN, and a member of Santee Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty “June” Herrington of Manning and Sherbie (Jim) Lancaster of Sumter; daughter-in-law, Carah F. Knight of Manning; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Carl Leslie Knight.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiated. Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, S.C. Office, P.O. Box 23128, Columbia, S.C. 29224-3128.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Moultrie E. Witherspoon

Moultrie Edward Witherspoon, 75, widower of Viola Smiling Witherspoon, died April 27, 2004, in Columbia.

Born Dec. 21, 1928, in the Wilson community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Chappell Witherspoon Sr. and Rovenia Charles Witherspoon. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from Federal Mogul in Manning. He was a lifetime member of Biggers AME Church, where he served as pastor steward and class leader. He was also a member of the senior choir and the Sunday school.

Survivors include two sons, Sylvester (Annie) Samuel of Manning and Moultrie (Erica Robinson) Witherspoon Jr. of Columbia; six daughters, the Rev. Viola (Fred) Fuller, Carolyn (Reginald) Holloway, Glorus (Salvador Gamble) Witherspoon and Denise Coleman, all of Columbia, Mildred (Richard) Nick and Kwakiutl Witherspoon, both of Manning; one brother, Ivory (Almettia) Witherspoon of Manning; one sister, Rovenia W. Bennett of Manning; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Witherspoon and Chappell Witherspoon Jr.; and Susie Mae W. Bradshaw.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 30, 2004, at Biggers AME Church, with the Rev. Andrew Jordan, pastor, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Al Smiling and the Rev. Alfred Darby for the eulogy.

Burial was in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery, Sumter.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Belva Matthews

CHARLESTON – Mrs. Belva Matthews, age 73, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at a local hospital, after a long illness.

Mrs. Matthews was born Jan. 21, 1931, in Sumter, the daughter of the late Charlton L. Green and Sudie B. Green. She was a retired nurse and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Louis Lee Matthews of Charleston; son, Louis Lee Matthews Jr. of Valdosta, Ga.; daughter, Peggy Renee Williams of James Island; a granddaughter, Britton Lane Williams of James Island; brother, William H. Green of Sumter; sisters, Alberta Williams of Dalzell, Ida Richburg of Hampton and Cathy Cutter of Manning; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Live Oak Memorial Gardens in Charleston.

Memorials may be made to Driftwood Nursing Home, 2375 Baker Hospital Blvd., North Charleston, S.C. 29405.

J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, Charleston was in charge of arrangements.

Mable C. Smith

Mable Canty Smith, 83, died April 21, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 15, 1920, in the Panola section of Clarendon County.

She was a daughter of the late Thomas Canty and Mary Kendrick Canty. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was employed as a caregiver and private sitter until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of Trinity AME Church and attended faithfully until her health failed.

Survivors include two sons, Ernest Smith and Richard Smith, both of Baltimore; four daughters, Cherly (Sammy Lesesne) Harris of Manning, Judy (Leroy) McDonald, Rosa (Charles) Johnson and Barbara (St.) Estimable, of Miami; seven grandchildren she reared as her own, Gerald, Willie, Jody, Farrington, Ava and Janae Smith of the home and Tyrell Smith of Miami; a special niece, Agnes Servance of Manning; 17 additional grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six brothers; two sisters; three children, Levi and Franklin Smith and Camilla Franklin; a grandson, Shawn Smith; and a granddaughter, Brenda Franklin.

The funeral was held on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Trinity AME Church in Manning. The Rev. Dr. Bernie Colclough officiated.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of the arrangements.

Ethel J. Heyward

Mrs. Ethel James Heyward, 79, of 32 S. Salem St., died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Heyward was born in Clarendon County, July 4, 1924, to the late Mr. Robin James and Mrs. Ella McConico James. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon and Sumter counties. At an early age, she joined Antioch UME Church and, after her marriage to the late Mr. James Heyward Sr., she joined Orange Hill AME Church and served faithfully on the usher board and was affiliated with the Good Samaritans.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Heyward, James Heyward Jr. and wife, Annette, Herbert Lee Heyward and wife, Denise, all of Sumter, and Harold Heyward and wife, Latisha, of Jacksonville, N.C.; three daughters, Susan Gayle and husband, Charles, Ethel Brand and Edith Vaughn and husband, Lawrence, all of Sumter; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Heyward was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Heyward Williams, four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Orange Hill AME Church in Wedgefield with the Rev. Lemuel L. Washington, pastor.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Edna Mae S. Hilton

Edna Mae Simon Hilton died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at the residence of her sister, Inez Heyward, in Sumter.

Born Nov. 28, 1924, in Clarendon County, she was the third child of the late Allen Simon Sr. and Susan Emma Lesane Simon. Mrs. Hilton attended the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Rosenwall High School. She was raised in Pine Grove AME Church. In the early 1940s, she was united in marriage to the late Henry Johnson Sr. They resided in Sumter and attended Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. In 1954, she moved to Lynchburg and married the late A.K. Hilton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Karo, Emmanuel, Melvin and Leon Simon.

She leaves to cherish precious memories her only child, Henry Johnson Jr. of Lynchburg; four sisters, Ida McBride and Inez (G.W.) Heyward of Sumter, Rosa Lee Johnson of Pinewood and Mary Ellen Simmons of Mayesville; three brothers, Allen Simon Jr. and Nathan (Diane A.) Simon of Sumter and Willie (Josephine) Simon of Elliott.

Services were held on Thursday, May 13, 2004, at St. Matthews AME Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Alvin E. Webb, pastor.

Burial was in the Greenbay Cemetery, Lynchburg.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn T. Flowers

PAMPLICO – Evelyn Turner Flowers, 86, of 1023 W. Turner Gate Road, died Sunday morning, May 9, 2004, in a Florence hospital, after an illness.

Mrs. Flowers was born in Pamplico, a daughter of the late Joseph Henry and Sophanie Dean Turner. She was a member of Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church, the adult Sunday school class and the ladies auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Flowers, who died in 1976.

Surviving are two sons, Joel Clayton (Lillie) Flowers of Pamplico and Roger L. (Trudie) Flowers Sr. of Summerton; brother, A.Z. Turner of Florence; five grandchildren, Sandra (Buddy) Bazen of Pamplico, Steve Flowers of Myrtle Beach, Adelaide (Curtis) Spencer and Ebbie (Don) Goodson, both of Sumter, and Roger L. (Allison) Flowers Jr. of Summerton; eight great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Neta Hutchinson of Pamplico.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church, 263 W. Seven Mile Road, Pamplico.

Julius A. Eadon Jr.

LEXINGTON – Julius Alton Eadon Jr., 68, husband of Jo Anne “Jody” Cook Eadon, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at his home in Lexington.

Born Feb. 24, 1936, in Kingstree, he was a son of Camilla Plowden Eadon and the late Julius Alton Eadon Sr. He was a real estate appraiser and a member of Edmund First Baptist Church in Pelion.

Surviving besides his mother of Orangeburg and wife of Lexington are a daughter, Darlye (Roger) Hert of Simpsonville; six sons, Julius Alton Norris of Columbia, Montgomery Eadon of Atlanta, Ga., Chris Eadon of Lexington, Ronald Robinson, Brian Robinson and Dean Robinson, all of Lexington; a sister, Camille Daniel of Summerville; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 16, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with Pastor Johnny Slice officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
