Verna A. Shomo

LANCASTER, Pa. – Verna A. Shomo, 74, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Essa Flory Hospice after a brief illness.

Born in Lancaster, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Test McComsey.

She would have celebrated her 56th wedding anniversary with Harvey M. Shomo on June 20.

A 1948 graduate of McCaskey High School, she took accounting courses at Franklin & Marshall College and Penn State University.

Mrs. Shomo retired in 1987 from RCA Corp., where she was a credit union loan officer for 20 years. Prior to that, she was a teller at the former Hamilton Bank. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, where she was a former choir member and a member of the Senior Shepherds.

She enjoyed traveling to Europe, especially Switzerland, Ireland, Italy and Greece and going on Mediterranean cruises. She enjoyed swimming and reading.

Surviving beside her husband are two sons, Patrick H. Shomo, of Ephrata, Pa. and Michael R. (Cynthia K.) Shomo of Leola, Pa.; a daughter, Leslie S. (Robert C.) Sheaffer of Manning; four grandchildren and one step-granddaughter.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Lancaster, with the Rev. Mark L. Russell officiating.

Internment followed in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Shomo may be sent to Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, Pa. 17604, or to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Organ Fund, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, Pa. 17602.

Jacob L. Nunamaker, III

Jacob L. Nunamaker, III, 68, husband of Margaret Weeks Nunamaker, died Monday, May 17, 2004, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born December 7, 1936, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jacob L. Nunamaker, Jr. and the late Sara Chewning Nunamaker. He was retired from the S.C. Dept. of Transportation after 36 years of service, and was a member of Manning United Methodist Church. He attended Clemson University and was named Resident Maintenance Engineer of the year for the State of S.C. in 1983.

Surviving, besides his wife of Manning, are a son, Dr. Jacob L. Nunamaker, IV, and wife Bari, of Beaufort; a sister, Hilda Davis of Cherokee, Ala.; three grandchildren, Virginia Nunamaker, Jacob Nunamaker V, and Olivia Nunamaker.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 20, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Debra Quilling and Morris Smith officiated. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Leatrice Collins

Leatrice Porter Williams Collins, 66, wife of Daniel Collins Sr., died May 15, 2004, in New Zion.

Born Oct. 24, 1937, in Beeville, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Henry Porter and Beatrice Harvey Porter. She received her formal education in the public schools of Corpus Christi, Texas. She was a professional seamstress in Philadelphia. After moving to New Zion, she owned and operated Daniel Boy Convenience Store and developed 527 subdivision. She was a member of Siloan Missionary Baptist Church, serving as a deaconess and member of the senior choir.

Survivors beside her husband of the home include two sons Michael (Angeline) Williams and Daniel (Latasha) Collins Jr., both of New Zion; one daughter Leatrice (Jonathan) Lambert of Sicklerville, N.J.; one brother, Howard Porter of San Antonio; three sisters, Marie Henderson of Dallas, Lillian Culpepper of San Antonio and Johnnie (Clarence) Lartitque of Beaumont, Texas; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters and a daughter.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Siloan Missionary Baptist Church in Kingstree, with the Rev. Terry Law, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Carnell Hampton, Deacon Norris Wallace, the Rev. Francis Burroughs and Minister Lagatha McFadden.

Burial followed in the Williams-Collins Memorial Gardens in New Zion.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

William R. Morris

William Roland Morris, 71, widower of Susan Sadler Morris, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 5, 1933, in Lancaster, Ohio, he was a son of the late William Burr and Helen Lucille Leoghnar Morris. He was a retired plant supervisor, a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, and was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are two sons, William Morris Jr. of Maine and Eric Morris of Naples, Fla.; a daughter, Brenda Morris of Daytona, Fla.; a brother, Jerry Morris of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Kathy Young of West Virginia, Vicki Kaderbeck of Cleveland and Jean Klasinski Morris of Tallahassee, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Luellar Mitchell

NEW YORK – Mrs. Luellar Mitchell, 81, widow of Mr. Arthur Mitchell, died May 8, 2004, at St. John Hospital in New York.

Born Feb. 7, 1923, in Williamsburg, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Mr. Augie and Mrs. Floria Nesmith Morris. She was a member of Bethel AME Church and served as a member of the stewardess and steward boards, usher board, senior and gospel choirs, missionary society and as mother of the church.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Mitchell of Arverne, N.Y., and Lavell Mitchell of Andrews, S.C.; five daughters, Olivia Thames and Deborah David, both of Manning, S.C., Mildred Emerson, Carleen Mitchell and Sydell Cook, all of New York; two sisters, Lillie Beeks of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Bulen Stokes of Titusville, Fla.; 25 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 14, 2004, at Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, N.Y.

Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y.

Mary Faye Lewis

Mary Faye “Merifaye” Lewis, 54, wife of John Henry Lewis Jr., died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at her home in Paxville.

Born Nov. 28, 1949, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Nellie Tobias Holladay. She was a homemaker and substitute teacher at Clarendon Hall and was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church, where she was the first lady trustee, a Sunday school teacher, assistant treasurer and a member of the Parsonage Committee.

Surviving besides her husband of Paxville are a daughter, Jennifer Lewis Jones and husband, Jay, of Sumter; a son, John Henry “Jay” Lewis III, of Paxville; two special grandsons, John Henry Lewis IV, and Tyler Lewis Jones; five sisters, Carolyn Spigner and husband, Ralph, of Columbia, Marian Jordan and husband, Charlie, of Durham, N.C., Judy Rogers and husband, Bill, Joyce Hardy and husband, George, and Lynn Holladay, all of Manning; a brother, Wayne Holladay and wife, Edith, of Manning.

Funeral services were Tuesday, May 18, 2004, in Paxville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Broomall officiating.

Burial followed in Paxville Cemetery.

Mary Jordan

MULLINS – Mrs. Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Cagle Jordan, 75, widow of Raymond Jordan Jr., died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Conway Medical Center, after an illness.

Mrs. Jordan was born Dec. 26, 1928, in Marlboro County, a daughter of the late James and Pearlie Cagle. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Jordan was a graduate of McColl High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Jordan are her children, Dotty (Ricky) Church of Manning and Ray (Debbie) Jordan of Lake View; three grandchildren, Ricky Bryan Church Jr., Callie Jones and Carrie Floyd; five great-grandchildren, Madison Church, Jordan Smith, Sawyer Jones, Emily Jones and Hunter Floyd; two sisters, Faye Nearland of Reno, Nev., and Ila Mae Willingham of Vancouver, Wash.; and two brothers, James Cagle and Daniel Bittle, both of McColl.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Wallace officiating.

Burial followed in Devotion Gardens Cemetery.

Cox-Collins Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Vivian Evans Piatt

SCRANTON – Vivian Evans Piatt, 62, widow of Landon Piatt, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the home of her daughter in St. Stephen.

Born May 25, 1942, in New Zion, she was a daughter of Edna Osborne Evans and the late Ernest Evans. She attended Friendfield Pentecostal Holiness Church in Scranton.

Surviving besides her mother of New Zion are a daughter, Wanda (Guy) Dordal of St. Stephen; a brother, Cecil Evans of Cross; a sister, Johnnie Mae Bailey of Pamplico; a grandson, Mark Grayson Dordal; and a granddaughter, Brooklyn Dordal.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, in Friendfield Pentecostal Holiness Church in Scranton with the Rev. Gerald Fitch officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the S.C. Diabetes Association.

Susan G. McElveen

Mrs. Susan Gibson McElveen, age 64, died July 2, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, after an illness.

Born in Spartanburg County, she was a daughter of the late Brainard Wilson Gibson Sr. and Alliene Hipp Gibson. Mrs. McElveen was a retired speech pathologist with Clarendon School District 3 and a former English instructor at the Turbeville Correctional Institution. She received her undergraduate degree from Columbia College and she earned her master’s degree plus 30 hours from the University of South Carolina. She was a member of the Clarendon County Republican Party; a member of the American Legion Auxiliary; and a member of the New Zion United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women, chaired the committee on worship, was church pianist, and a choir member.

Surviving are her husband, Ray McElveen; a daughter, Helen (Mike) F. Huggins of Aynor; a sister, Anne G. Lavender of New Zion; a brother, Brainard (Lorraine) W. Gibson of Madison, Maine; and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Caroline Huggins of Aynor.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 5, 2004, at the New Zion United Methodist Church.

Burial was in the New Town Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of arrangements.
