Naomi B. Deschamps

Mrs. Naomi Boyd Deschamps, wife of Ralph Deschamps, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County on Sept. 1, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Ezekiel and Viola James Boyd. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined New Hope AME Church. After her marriage, she joined New Hope UME Church, where she served faithfully in several auxiliaries, namely the senior and gospel choirs, Sunday school teacher, Ministerial Wives Alliance, Stewardess Board and the Missionary Society. She was employed by Sumter School District 2 for 28 years.

Survivors include her husband of the home, Mr. Ralph Deschamps; five sons, Masceo (Mary) Deschamps of Raleigh, N.C., Roderick (Dianne) Deschamps of Sumter, Leroy (Cynthia) Deschamps and Tony (Valerie) Deschamps, both of Columbia, Floyd (Jacqueline) Deschamps of Gaithersburg, Md.; five daughters, Myrtle (Jerome) Hastie of Clinton, Md., Maris (Dennis) Cannon and Kachet Deschamps, both of Columbia, Eunice Deschamps of Suitland, Md., and Keisha (Kenya) Williamson of Virginia Beach, Va.; one stepmother-in-law, Mrs. Alethia Prather of Bowie, Md.; one stepbrother, Bernard (Doris) Smoke of St. Matthews; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five step-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Queen Deschamps of Pinewood.

She was preceded in death by a son, Louie Deschamps Sr., and two brothers, Wendell Gaymon and Dr. Nicholas Gaymon.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at New Hope UME Church with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating.

Burial followed in the New Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the New Hope UME Church Scholarship Fund.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

Juanita P. Epps

Mrs. Juanita Price Epps, 91, widow of Eugene “Mack” Epps, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at her residence in New Zion.

Mrs. Epps was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Jessie Marvin and Sarah Ann McKenzie Price. She was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church for 56 years and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Mrs. Epps retired after 46 years as a Luzier cosmetic consultant.

Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn Epps Hough of the home and Frankie Epps Black of Pickens; three granddaughters, Laura Ann Godwin of New Zion, Frances (Lynn) Suttles of Columbia and Miranda Looper of Charleston; two great-grands, Jessica Lynn and Travis Yarborough of Columbia; one sister, Margaret Camp of New Jersey; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 8, 2004, in Midway Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Rodney Foster.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Williamsburg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Regional Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150 or Midway Presbyterian Church, 12189 Black River Road, New Zion, S.C. 29111.

Adelaide M. Clemons

ANDREWS – Adelaide McFaddin Clemons, 82, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Clemons was born in Gable on Jan. 23, 1922, a daughter of the late Earl Sloan McFaddin and Mary Elizabeth Watkins McFaddin. She grew up in Gable and graduated from Gable High School. Mrs. Clemons was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a former member of the administrative board. She was also a member of the Esther Elizabeth Circle of the United Methodist Women and the Daisy Watson Church School Class. Mrs. Clemons was the widow of Carlisle Clemons.

Surviving are two sons, Jimmy Clemons and Roland Clemons, both of Andrews; two daughters, Mary Lou C. Moore of Andrews and Marsha C. Morris of Lugoff; a sister-in-law, Doris McFaddin of Gable; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Steven M. Todd.

Burial followed at Andrews Memorial Cemetery.

The Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest R. Campbell

LAURENS – Ernest Ray Campbell, 81, widower of Martha Louise Cherry Campbell, died Monday, July 5, 2004, in Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center in Laurens.

Born March 10, 1923, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late John Ellis and Mary Anna Jones Campbell. He was a 1937 graduate of Manning High School, a 1943 graduate of North Greenville Junior College, a 1945 graduate of Bob Jones University in Cleveland, Tenn., attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and received a Ph.D. from Bob Jones University in Greenville. He served numerous churches, including many in South Carolina and Florida, as well as Tennessee, Missouri and Kentucky. Ordained in January of 1945, at Clarendon Baptist Church, he witnessed the salvation of thousands under his preaching, and served on many boards, and in many leadership roles in his service of our Lord. He was a former member of First Baptist Church, Manning, and was a member of First Baptist Church, Laurens at the time of his death.

Campbell served as executive secretary of the Florida State Baptist Convention, as director of outreach for the Palm Beach Baptist Association and was co-founder of the Racetrack Chaplains of America.

Surviving are a son, Calvin Ernest (Trudy Ann) Campbell, of Talladega, Ala.; two brothers, Walter Louis Campbell of Summerton and John Newell (Carolyn Faye “Hubba”) Campbell of Lexington; sisters-in-law, Doris McCabe Campbell and Willowese Ridgeway Campbell of Manning and Lorea Ridgeway Campbell of Spartanburg; three grandchildren, Eric Todd (Lori) Campbell of New Albany, Miss., Chadwick Scott (Kim) Campbell of Macon, Ga. and Kristen Rae Campbell (Christopher) Albright of Vincent, Ala.; four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 55 years, Martha Louise Cherry and brothers, James, Albert and Roy Campbell.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 10, 2004, in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Paul Sullivan officiating.

Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Peter J. Brown

Peter “Pete” Jerome Brown, 49, husband of Sylinda (Gail) Reid Brown, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born July 16, 1954, in Greeleyville, he was a son of Sam Willie McCray and Nancy Brown Atkins and stepson of John Atkins. At an early age, he joined St. John Baptist Church, Greeleyville. He received his education in the public schools of Williamsburg County, graduating from C.E. Murray High School Class of 1972. He was employed for 12 years with Williams Furniture and 10 years at Georgia-Pacific in Russellville.

Survivors besides his wife, Gail Brown of the home, include two sons, Brandon and Kendric Brown of the home; mother and stepfather, Nancy (John) Atkins of Philadelphia; father, Sam Willie (Zayra) McCray of Greeleyville; four brothers, Derrick Brown of Killeen, Texas, Willie Lee McBride of Columbia, W.J. (Gail) McCray of Greeleyville and Billy McCray of Myrtle Beach; and five sisters, Barbara Harvin of Kingstree, Sharon (Phillip) Stewart, Jacqueline Atkins and Joan Atkins, all of Philadelphia, Sylvia (Major) Hicks of Richmond, Va.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 9, 2004, at St. John Baptist Church, Easler Road, Snow Hill community, Greeleyville, with the Rev. Phillip Boyd, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Lavern Brown presiding.

Burial was in Old St. John Baptist Church Cemetery, Kingstree Highway, Greeleyville.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Earlene N. Balls

Missionary Earlene “Cookie” Nixon Balls, 45, wife of Dexter Balls, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born July 30, 1958, in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late Frank Nixon and Mamie Ruth Green Nixon. She attended the public schools of Washington, D.C. Later, she relocated to Summerton, where she graduated from Scott’s Branch High School. She was a member of House of God Church in Manning.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Nixon of Baltimore, Jammie Gaymon of Ridgeville and Eric Gaymon of Sumter; one daughter, Markita Owens of Sparrows Point, Md.; three sisters, Cynthia Green and Helen Nixon, both of Summerton, and Berlinda Wade of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren; and an adopted sister, Sharon Thames of Manning.

She was preceded in death by three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 8, 2004, at the Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, with the Rev. M. Capers, pastor, Pastor E.B. Stukes officiating, and Elder Holly Robinson.

Burial was in Liberty Hill Church Cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Max Ray Self

Max Ray Self, 69, husband of Ann M. Self, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born in Gastonia, N.C., he was a son of the late Claude Grady Self and the late Loree Gordon Self.

He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Dale Self and his wife, Jennifer, of Lutz, Fla., Vaughn Self and his wife, Amy, of Charlotte, and Robin Self and his wife, Tammy, of Sumter; and eight grandchildren, Joshua, Jarret, Jeremy, Austin, Max, Mahari, Hutson, and Josie Grace.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego with the Rev. Randy Bowers and the Rev. Stephen McCormick officiating.

Burial was in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church Playground Fund, 5575 Lodebar Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Lillie Mae B. Pringle

Mrs. Lillie Mae Brunson Pringle, 72, wife of the Rev. J.H. Pringle, died June 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born May 26, 1932, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Warren Brunson and Mrs. Alice Andrew Brunson. Mrs. Pringle obtained her education in the public schools of Sumter County. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Her recent and former affiliations include church musician, member of Missionary Society, Sunday school teacher, member of Queen of the South Chapter 304 OES, Ministers’ and Deacons’ Wives Alliance, Black River Missionary Baptist Association, lifelong member of the Manning branch NAACP.

Survivors include four sons, Lee Allen Pringle of Silver, Joshua (Judy) Pringle, Randolph (Daisy) Pringle, both of Pinewood, and Isaac (Rhonda) Pringle of Augusta, Ga.; three daughters, Patricia Pringle of Pinewood, Carlethia (Larry) Yarborough of Burlington, N.C., Anita (Anthoney Paul) Brown of Augusta, Ga.; special goddaughter, Tonya McConnico of Rock Hill; three brothers, Alvin Brunson of Sumter, Silas (Eliza Anne) Brunson of Manning and Leon (Lucille) Brunson of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Carrie Harvin of Pinewood; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Jonathan Pringle; one granddaughter, Lillian Nicole Yarborough; two brothers, John Brunson and Sammie Lee Brunson; and one sister, Alice Brunson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 2, 2004, at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Pinewood, with the Revs. E.L. Sanders, Dr. D.L. Grant, R. McFadden Jr., Dr. C. Richburg, Elder R. Boyd and Richard Addison.

Burial was in Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Pinewood.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Ann Coker Crouch

Mrs. Ann Coker Crouch, 69, died July 11, 2004 in a Florence hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Carlisle Coker Sr. and Sarah Bradham Coker. Mrs. Crouch was a retired radiologist. She was a member and former church secretary of the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Guy V. Crouch Jr. of the home; two daughters, Jane C. (Richard) Diaz of Florence and Elizabeth (Bobby) C. Luguire of North Augusta; two sisters, Jane C. Baird and Nancy C. McFadden of Turbeville; one brother, Joseph W. Coker of Turbeville; three granddaughters, Megan and Katie Luguire of North Augusta and Ginny Diaz of Florence.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, R. Carlisle Coker Jr. and Earl Bradham “Boozie” Coker.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Turbeville Free Will Home for Children, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church, P.O. Box 233, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.
