Lila R. Lawson

Lila R. Lawson, 74, widow of Mr. W.K. Lawson, died July 9, 2004, at Mariner Health in Sumter.

Born Sept. 17, 1929, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Richburg and Curly Richburg. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Historic Liberty Hill AME Church. While living in Baltimore, she attended Solid Rock and Mt. Olive Baptist churches. After returning to Summerton, she also attended Shiloh AME Church.

Surviving is a daughter, Ellen Tindal of Manning; a brother, Moses Richburg (Rebecca) of Summerton; a sister, Sarah Tindal of Summerton; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Briggs, and a brother-in-law, Charlie Tindal.

Services were held on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Summerton. The Rev. O’Donald Dingle officiated.

Burial was in Liberty Hill AME Church Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Perry B. Jenkins

Perry Broughton Jenkins, 75, of Summerton and widower of Virginia Bridges Jenkins, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Aug. 15, 1928, in Fairmont, N.C., he was a son of the late Warren F. and Omega Stone Jenkins. He was a retired pharmaceutical broker. Mr. Jenkins attended Auburn University and was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Perry Jenkins Jr. of Garner, N.C.; four daughters, Jeni Russell of Burlington, N.C., Tammy Jenkins of Knightdale, N.C., Linda Sturm of Raleigh, N.C. and Nancy Bailey of Muscatine, Iowa; two sisters, Ava Hammond of Aiken and Kay Rhodes of Southern Pines, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 17, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating.

Burial was in Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh, N.C.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Sarah Holden

Sarah Bernice Moore Holden, 90, widow of John S. Holden, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter East.

Born April 25, 1914, in Center Hill, Fla., she was a daughter of the late John Franklin and Lillian Alberta Odom Moore. She was a retired clerk from Dickson’s Pharmacy and a member of Manning United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and member of the Nelle Wells Circle.

Surviving are a daughter, Gwendolyn Holden Kinsey of Sumter; a grandson, John K. Kinsey and wife, Karen, of Sumter; two great grandsons, Britton and Michael Kinsey, both of Sumter; and a number of cousins.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 19, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Ladies Bible Class of Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Emanuel Gibson

Emanuel Gibson, 80, widower of Evelene Dingle Gibson, died July 9, 2004, at his residence, in the Davis Station community.

Born Dec. 25, 1923, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Tossie Gibson and Julia Clark Gibson. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Laurel Hill AME, where he served as a trustee of the church. He was a member of the Job Lodge and a member of the NAACP. He was also one of the first singers with the Jeremiah Singers.

Survivors include four sons, James (Sarah) Gibson of Manning, Albert Gibson, Minister Lee Samuel (Valerie) Gibson and Milton (Julia) Gibson, all of Lexington; four daughters, Eva Gibson of the home, Julia Ann (Minister Steve) Munns and Artril Enwere, both of Fayetteville, N.C., and Julia (Pastor Joe) Ellison of Lexington; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lucinda, and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Laurel Hill AME Church, Davis Station, with the Rev. Ronnie Brown, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Abraham Gibson, Pastor Joe Ellison and Minister Marcus E. Gibson.

Burial was in Carolina Johnson Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Evon Lee Dowe

COLUMBIA – Evon Lee Dowe, 46, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at his residence in Columbia.

Born Aug. 15, 1957, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Kirby Lee Dowe and Lula Mae Benbow Dowe. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors include one son, Nathan Nelson of Columbia; four brothers, Levon and Curtis Dowe, both of Summerton; John E. Dowe of Sumter and Kary Dowe of Loris; two sisters, Lillie Belle (Michael) Johnson of Columbia and Sharon R. Burno of Sumter; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 16, 2004, at St. Matthews AME Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Mary L. Blanding

Mrs. Mary Lizzie Blanding, 91, entered eternal rest at Hopewell Nursing Center on July 8, 2004.

Born June 23, 1913, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Richard Bradley Sr. and Sarah Ann Bethune Bradley and the widow of Theodore R. Blanding Sr. Early in her youth, she joined St. John Baptist Church and after marriage she joined Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member until illness limited her ability to attend.

Survivors include four sons, Richard Blanding, Deacon David J. Blanding and wife, Lilly, both of Sumter, Theodore R. Blanding and wife, Bobbie, of Phoenix City, Ala., and Ashby S. Blanding and wife, Lorna, of Riverside, Ga.; five daughters, Alma Montgomery, Naomi Blanding and Olivia B. Johnson, all of Sumter, Freedosher Campbell and husband, Dwight, of Bronx, N.Y., and Frances M. Blanding of College Park, Ga.; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry K. Presley, pastor, officiating and assisted by the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Jeremiah Blanding, the Rev. Lincoln Blanding, Elder Tommy L. Wells and evangelist Jesteen Richburg.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Bassard Jr.

CLINTON, Md. – Kenneth Michael Bassard Jr., 23, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Born March 14, 1981, in Clinton, he was a son of Kenneth Michael Bassard Sr. and Mary White Bassard.

A graduate of Oxon Hill High School Science and Technology Program, he was awarded the prestigious Merhoff Scholarship for academic excellence. He enrolled in the University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus, to pursue a degree in computer graphics and animation.

Survivors besides his parents of the home include a brother, Ryan Bassard; a sister Sarina B. Marshall; and an uncle and aunt, John B. “Skip” Bassard and his wife, Mary Ann, of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 19, 2004, in the Chapel of Lee Funeral Home in Clinton with Donnie Simon officiating.

Burial followed in the Resurrection Cemetery.

Julia B. Shubrick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mrs. Julia Brogdon Shubrick, 71, wife of Mr. Willie Shubrick, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, in Charlotte.

Born Nov. 1, 1932, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Brogdon and Lillie Servance Brogdon. Mrs. Shubrick obtained her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and her affiliations included being a member of the Missionary Society and of the senior, gospel and mass choirs. She was also active with the Youth Department and a member of the Scholarship Committee.

Survivors besides her husband include a son, Mr. Willie (Loretta) Shubrick Jr. of Charlotte; four daughters, Vanessa S. (John R.) Johnson of Charlotte, Willian S. Davis (Evans III) and Rosalyn V. Nelson (the Rev. Fredrick), both of Columbia, and Julia S. (Bobby) McKenzie of New Zion; a niece, Gwendolyn (Fred) Wesley of Manning; a nephew, Russell Walton of Manning; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Brogdon.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 7, 2003, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Revs. George Windley, Mitchell Adger and Clarence Hilton officiating.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Josephine McKenzie

Mrs. Josephine “Phinnie” McKenzie, 86, widow of Curtis Junior McKenzie, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at the residence in Turbeville.

Born Dec. 14, 1917, in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Horace and Jane Singletary.

Survivors include one son, Leroy “Sonny” Eaddy of Turbeville; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two siblings, Cora Robinson and Marie Robinson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 9, 2004, in the L.M. Green Memorial Chapel, 309 S. Church St., Lake City, with the Rev. Anthony Whay officiating.

Burial followed in New McFadden Cemetery, Olanta.

Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of arrangements.

Edith M. Logan

Edith Montgomery Logan, 81, widow of Bernie Logan, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Mariner Health Care Nursing Facility, Sumter.

Born Aug. 27, 1923, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late George Montgomery and Lucy McFadden Montgomery. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she was a member of Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville. Later, she moved her membership to Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville, where she served as a member of the Usher’s Ministry, Pulpit Aid Ministry, Kitchen Committee and the Chancel Choir. She retired from Hopewell Healthcare as a nursing assistant, where she worked for 18 years.

Survivors include three sons, Bernie Logan Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jersey and Ray Logan of Paxville; five daughters, Mary and Alice Logan, Delores L. Tindal and Gracie Simon of Paxville, and Omelia Cobb of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one sister, Lillie M. Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Prince and Rudolph Logan; three brothers, Pearson “Boy,” James and George Montgomery; three sisters, Lear M. Price, Lu Bell and Maggie Montgomery.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville. The Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Dr. D.L. Grant, Cornell Witherspoon and Constance Walker. Burial followed in Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Pinewood.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.
