James R. Lea

James Reese “Jimmy” Lea, 71, husband of Helen Richbourg Lea, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, in Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

Born Oct. 29, 1932, in Holly Hill, he was the son of the late Stubo and Mary Elizabeth “Bessie” Daniels Lea. He was operator of Superior Custom Cabinets in Manning, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, member of American Legion Williams-Burgess Post #68, a member of the VFW, the DAV, and Summerton Masonic Lodge #105.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, include four daughters, Ann J. (William E.) Tyner of Summerville, Marilyn (Steve) Lowe of Mooresville, N.C., Connie (Jimmy) Williams of Florence and Gayle (Mitch) Richburg of Sumter; a son, James Reese “Bubba” (Susan) Lea of Manning; a brother, John (Buena) Lea of Manning; a sister, Tweetie Hill of New Ellenton; 11 grandchildren, and special friend, Margie Bagnal.

Services were held on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Manning First Baptist Church. The Rev. Lloyd Ackerman officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Carey McElveen and Danny Bridges. Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Ann Frances Richmond Hunt

Ann Frances Richmond Hunt, 70, beloved wife of 48 years to Lt. Col. Homer Roderick Hunt, died on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at her residence.

Born in Clyde, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Rush Rader Richmond and Margaret Gaudern Richmond. She was a devoted mother and Air Force wife whose assignments included the United States, Okinawa, England and Germany. She was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Thomas Roderick Hunt of Clemson and Steven Wesley Hunt of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Chris Ann Buker of Mansfield, Ohio, and Traci Kathleen Forbes of Manning; one brother, Thomas Richmond of Manatou Springs, Colo.; one sister, Martha Jennings of Clyde, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. The Rev. Louis Jamison officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to The Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 211 Alice Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150, Church of The Holy Cross “Building Fund,” 335 North King’s Highway, Sumter, S.C. 29154, or to Tri-County Hospice, 2650 A Hardee Cove, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Emma Cunningham

RALEIGH, N.C. – Emma Lee Walker Cunningham, 58, of Raleigh, N.C., and wife of Wilbur James Cunningham, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.

Born Jan. 31, 1946, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Elijah Walker Jr. and Rosa Lee Matthews Walker. In her youth, she joined Trinity AME Church, Manning. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, graduating from Manning Training School in 1963. She furthered her education as a graduate of Kingsborough Community College and Queens College and was a teacher for the Wake County school system in Raleigh, N.C. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Raleigh.

Survivors, besides her husband, Wilbur J. Cunningham of the home, include one son, Wayne Derick Cunningham of Rahway, N.J.; one daughter, Pamela Denise Cunningham of Raleigh, N.C.; three brothers, Clarence E. (Lovie) Matthews of Bronx, N.Y., Horace (Leila) Walker of Columbia and Jewel Walker of Manning; four sisters, Maggie L. Nixon of Queens, N.Y., Zella R. Grantham of New York City, Georgia M. (Heyward) Lynch of Raleigh, N.C., and Annie L. (Walt) Mouzon of Lexington; two grandchildren, Angelica and Ysamin.

Services were held on Monday, March 1, 2004, at Trinity AME, Manning. The Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in Sawdust Cemetery in the Live Oak community of Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of local arrangements.

Miller Conyers Sr.

Mr. Miller Conyers Sr., 77, husband of Mrs. Adline B. Conyers, died Feb. 20, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Dec. 27, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Mr. Setzer Conyers and the late Mrs. Susan Pringle Conyers. Mr. Conyers obtained his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church, having joined during his youth. Prior to his retirement, he was a prosperous self-employed farmer.

Survivors include three sons, Mr. Miller (Minnie) Conyers Jr., Mr. Howard Dean (Delois) Conyers and Mr. Michael (Virginia) Conyers of Paxville; two daughters, Mrs. Joann (Roosevelt) Robinson and Mrs. Carolyn (Christian) Anastal of Boston; one sister, Mrs. Rosa (William) Lloyd of Boston; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by one son, Charles; one brother, Stratford; and three sisters, Leathia Texidor, Gladys Carnes and Portia Cantey.

Services were held on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Calvary Baptist Church, Pinewood. The Revs. E.L. Sanders, Herman Holland, J.H. Pringle and Roosevelt McFadden Jr. officiated the service. Burial followed in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Pinewood.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Mary D. Bollinger

WEST COLUMBIA – Mrs. Mary DuRant Bollinger, 90, a loving wife, devoted mother and a remarkable South Carolinian, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2004.

Born in Clarendon County on Nov. 20, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Melle Douglass DuRant and John Calhoun DuRant. She engaged in many civic, educational and church related activities. Her accomplishments have been published in “Who’s Who of American Women, South Carolina Lives” and “The Dictionary of International Biography.” She was a member of many organizations, including the United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, The Palmetto Book Club, The Cassina Garden Club and, by invitation, The Plantagenet Society, The Colonial Order of the Crown Lineal Descendents of the Emperor Charlemagne, the Dames of the Magna Carta, and The Society for Americans of Royal Descent.

Mrs. Bollinger was the first state vice president of the Congress of Parents and Teachers and held a lifetime membership pin. She was an accredited flower show judge and was an acknowledged authority on flower arranging.

Mrs. Bollinger was a member of State Street Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband, Robert Swaffield Bollinger, include daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Elizabeth (Freeman W.) Coggins of Columbia and Kathrin B. (William C.) Tietz of Chapin; sister, Clara DuRant Moore of Georgetown; and grandchildren, W. Robert Tietz and M. Tyson Tietz.

Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at State Street Baptist Church, Cayce. Dr. Pete Cassidy officiated the service. Burial followed in the Elmwood Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to State Street Baptist Church, 1420 State St., Cayce, S.C. 29033.

Willie Witherspoon

Deacon Willie Moses Witherspoon, 100, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late James and Cary Anna Georgia Witherspoon. He was the widower of Julia “Mable” Blanding Witherspoon. He was preceded in death by three sons, Robert Lee Witherspoon, Ellison Witherspoon and Elijah Witherspoon.

He was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, where he served as a member of the trustee board. He served as a deacon for over 60 years, becoming chairman of the Deacon Board in 1983. He retired from chairman in 1996 to care for his wife. He served in the following ministries: Gospel Choir, Helping Hands, Industrial Club, member of the Greater Friendly Union and the Missionary Society. He was instrumental in building the church’s Fellowship Hall. He was employed with the South Carolina Highway Department as a builder of roads and bridges.

He leaves to mourn his passing and grow from his memories three sons, Willie Henry Witherspoon and O’Donald Witherspoon, both of Baltimore; Moses James (Mary) Witherspoon of Lancaster, Pa.; seven daughters, Julia (Royal) Holley of Baltimore, Rounette (Carl) Young and Mccolia Richardson, all of Philadelphia; Cary Robinson of Summerton; Ruby Deloris McKinney, Cynthia (Elijah) McConico and Retha Harvin, all of Lancaster, Pa.; four brothers, Elijah Witherspoon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Nathaniel, Fred (Joann) and John Witherspoon, all of Baltimore; four sisters, Pearl Tindal of Summerton; Susie (Berkley) Calhoun and Catherine (Joseph) Bullock, both of Baltimore; and Frances Conyers of New Haven, Conn.; a god-daughter, Vashtie Hamilton; 46 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; many, many great-great-grandchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.

Funeral services for the late Deacon Willie Moses Witherspoon were held on Monday, July 19, 2004, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton with the Rev. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Gwendolyn H. Shaw

Mrs. Gwendolyn “Diane” Hastie Shaw died Tuesday, July 13, 2004.

Born on July 22, 1953, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of Mrs. Catherine H. Green and Mr. Lomas Farmer. “Diane,” as she was affectionately called, received her education from Manchester School in Pinewood and Morris College, Sumter. Early in her adult life, Diane became ill and blind. Her illness did not stop her from being a happy, joyful and appreciative person. She accepted Christ and became a member of Salem Baptist Church. She was married to the late Mr. Charles Bernard Shaw.

Fond and precious memories will be cherished by her five sons, Alonzo Shaw, Horace Shaw, Eddie Shaw, Christopher Shaw and Charles Shaw Jr., all of Sumter; three grandchildren of Fayetteville, N.C.; her mother, Mrs. Catherine Green and stepfather, Mr. Ervin James Green of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; her father, Mr. Lomas Farmer of Paxville; two sisters, Mrs. Frances (Gus) Moss of Columbia and Mrs. Lou Ada (Herbert) Nelson of Sumter; three brothers, Mr. Eric Green and Mr. Al Green, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Mr. David Farmer of Sumter; grandmother, Mrs. Sudie Hastie of Sumter; 12 nieces and nephews; stepmother-in-law, Mrs. Susan Blackwell of Sumter; one grandaunt, Mrs. Fannie Pack of Sumter; 11 uncles and aunts; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; five stepbrothers-in-law; two stepsisters-in-law; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Charles Bernard Shaw, and her brother, Mr. Cleveland Hastie.

Services for Mrs. Shaw were held on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. N. Lamonte Newsome officiating, assisted by the Rev. Joshua Dupree, Elder Willie Dupree and the Rev. Willie A. Wright Jr.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Lila M. Olin

Lila Melle Holliday Olin, 71, wife of George Chapin Olin, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Roper Hospital in Charleston.

Born May 25, 1933, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Louis Arlo and Ellen Loyrea Brewer Holliday. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and received a master’s of education degree from the University of South Carolina. She was a retired schoolteacher, and a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are a daughter, Ellen O. Perdue and husband, Bruce, of Goose Creek; a brother, Louis Arlo Holliday Jr. and wife, Gayle, of Beaufort; a sister, Dr. Vivian L. Holliday of Wooster, Ohio; a granddaughter, Danielle Elizabeth Perdue; two nephews, Louis Arlo Holliday III and Jeffrey Overby Holliday; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 15, 2004, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Ida Mae C. McFadden

Ida Mae Conyers McFadden, 58, wife of Ranzy McFadden Jr., died July 10, 2004, at her residence, 2074 McCrays Mill Road, Sumter.

Born Jan. 21, 1946, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Timothy and Ruth Riley Conyers. Mrs. Ida was a baptized member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the West Congregation in Sumter for a number of years. In 1964, she graduated from Lincoln High School. She was employed by Carolina Furniture Co. for more than 30 years.

Survivors include one son, Darrell Raynard McFadden of Sumter; one daughter, Danielle Patrice Morgan-Govan of Sumter; one sister, Louise Conyers of Sumter; three nieces, Lisa Alexandra and Fredricka Taylor, both of Sumter, and Toni Washington of Peachtree, Ga.; three loved like grandchildren, Jamie, Ryan and Terri Morgan; a mother-in-law, Ida S. McFadden of Sumter; two brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; two uncles, Marion (Doris) Riley and David “Junious” (Louise) Conyers, both of Paxville; five aunts, Leguina (James) Conyers McCloud and Elizabeth Riley, both of Paxville, Jerona Riley and Edna Riley, both of Sumter, and Vertelle Riley of Maryland; a special cousin, Matthew Riley Jr. of Elliott City, Md.; a special friend, Mary Gibson McCauley; and a host of other grandnieces, grandnephews, other close relatives and valued friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, in Sumter, with Brother J.B. Harper officiating.

Burial was in Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Lillie Mae B. Lee

Lillie Mae Broadway Lee, 65, widow of John W. Lee Jr., died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late James Richard Broadway and the late Ellen Hamilton Broadway. She was reared in Sumter by the late Marion Hamilton and the late Ella Hamilton. She was a member of Midland Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include five sons, James Lee, Richard Lee, David Lee, Tony Lee and Luther Lee of Sumter; three daughters, Janice McDonald Gonzales, Debbie Lee Howard and Robin Lee Barfield; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Blandon Brown of Spartanburg; and several stepbrothers and stepsisters.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew Brown and James Broadway.

Services were held on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. The Revs. Donnie Collins and Tom Weaver officiated the service. Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.
