James Mason Morris

James Mason Morris, 61, died March 5, 2004, in a Columbia hospital after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Shelton Morris and Muriel Floyd Morris. He was the owner and operator of Jimmy’s Exxon service station in Turbeville.

Survivors include three sisters, Shirley Ward, Earline Morris and Judy Smith of Sumter. Mr. Morris was preceded in death by a nephew, Dean Ward.

Services were held on Monday, March 8, 2004 at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel in Olanta. Burial followed in Olive Grove Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

Memorials may be made to The Free Will Baptist Home for Children, 5232 Turbeville Highway, Turbeville, S.C. 29162 or Olive Grove Church Cemetery Fund, Olive Grove Road, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Jane A. Osborne

Jane Alma Osborne, 59, died Monday, March 1, 2004, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 6, 1944, in Kingstree, she was the daughter of the late M.C. and Alma Benton Osborne. She was a former dispatcher for the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Department, a certified forklift operator, and a former school bus driver. She was a graduate of East Clarendon High School, Farah’s Beauty School, and continued her education with courses at Florence-Darlington Tech and Sumter Tech. She was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church. Miss Osborne sang in the Pine Grove Choir for 10 years and was an original member of Puddin’ Swamp Singers, where she sang for 10 years.

Survivors include three brothers, W.C. Osborne of New Zion, M.C. Osborne of West Columbia and Glen Osborne of Lexington; nieces and nephews; and her beloved dogs, Scooby Doo and Scooter.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, March 4, 2004, in New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Gordon Timmons officiated the service.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Alice N. Junious

Alice N. Junious, 98, widow of David Junious, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Hopewell Healthcare Center.

Born Sept. 3, 1905, in the Rimini community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late January and Alice Scott Nelson. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and became a lifelong active member of Antioch AME Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, missionary, class leader, member of the senior choir and mother of the church. She was the president of the YMCA Lodge No. 13, until her illness.

Survivors include one son, Willie Freddie (Bessie) Junious of Rimini; one daughter, Thelma J. (Roger) Greene of Bronx, N.Y.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous in-laws; a devoted friend, Sarah Gibson Rand; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Antioch AME Church, Rimini. The Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Saymon James.

Burial followed in Antioch AME Church cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude M. McDuffie

KINGSTREE – Mrs. Gertrude Miriam McClary McDuffie, 92, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born in Kingstree, Nov. 20, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Lizzie Hanna McClary and Johnny McClary. She was a graduate of Tomlinson High School. She was an entrepreneur early in life. She moved to Washington, D.C., and met and married the late Mr. George McDuffie. She then moved to Statesville, N.C., and attended St. John Baptist Church in Statesville. She returned to Kingstree and reaffiliated herself with Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and served the church as a member of the United Methodist Church and Circle No. One.

Survivors include her devoted nieces, Mrs. Gloria (Ulysses) Frierson of Florence, Mrs. Sylvia Ivey, Ms. Miriam Smith and Mrs. Patricia Smith of New Zion, Mrs. Charlene (James) Timmons of Quinby, Mrs. Roberta Kelly, Mrs. Alice Tisdale and Mrs. Elzetta Trawick of Kingstree, Mrs. Lillie Mitchell of Hollywood, Fla.; two nephews, Mr. Wade (Ada) Smith of New Zion and Mr. Pickens (Ruth) Wilson of Kingstree; a special cousin, Mrs. Blondell Mathews of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Lee Curtis Bines officiated the service. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Bobby L. Singleton

Bobby Lee “Pig” Singleton, 56, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Oct. 15, 1947, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Hasker “Big Boy” Singleton and Annie Lou Mickens Singleton. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed at Sigmon Plantation as a tractor driver.

Survivors include his companion of the home, Hester C. Thames; four sisters, Emma Bates of Pinewood, Mary Bates, Margaret Palmer and Linda Stinney of Summerton; three brothers, Preston Stukes, Willie Singleton and Tommy Singleton of Summerton; three stepdaughters, Betty Riggins of Foreston, Annette D. Burgess of Manning and Yvette Benbow of Boston; two stepsons, Roosevelt Cubit of Manning and Dawson Cubit of Boston; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Silver. The Rev. W.J. Chandler officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jean Smith

MYRTLE BEACH – Betty Jean Smith, 66, widow of William H. Smith, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.

Born Feb. 2, 1938, in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Pearl Smith Robison. Mrs. Smith was a founding member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach.

Survivors include three sons, William R. (Donna) Smith and Michael H. Smith, of Myrtle Beach, and Richard K. (Debra) Smith of Korea; one brother, Buster Robison of Turbeville; and six grandchildren, Richard Wayne Smith, Baylie Jean Smith, Kevin Andrew Smith, Elizabeth, Jonathan and Joshua Smith.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at First Freewill Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach. The Rev. Jimmy Brown officiated the service. Entombment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Coastal Carolina Chapter, P.O. Box 80459, Charleston, S.C. 29416.

James Anders

WEST COLUMBIA–Mr. James C. “Jim” Anders, 62, died Saturday, March 6, 2004.

Born in Greenville on December 13, 1941, he was a son of Louise Williams Anders and the late James Anders. At an early age, he moved to Greenwood where he was a Boy Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Greenwood High School. In 1963, he graduated from the University of South Carolina where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1967. He served in the United States Army from 1967-1968. From 1968-1978, he served as a commissioned officer in the United States Naval JAG Corps Reserve. He was an Assistant Attorney General for the State of South Carolina until 1970, when he entered private practice. Mr. Anders was elected in 1974 and served until 1991 as Solicitor for the Fifth Judicial Circuit, which includes Richland and Kershaw counties. During that time, he was an active member of the National District Attorneys Association. In 1991, he re-entered the private practice of law. Most recently, he was founder of James C. Anders, P.A. & Associates, with offices in Columbia, Rock Hill and Aiken.

He was a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and a member of the board of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. In 2003, in recognition of his outstanding civic service to the State of South Carolina, he was awarded South Carolina’s highest honor, the Order of the Pametto by Gov. Jim Hodges.

Mr. Anders was a member of Masonic Lodge #326 and a Shriner.

Surviving in addition to his mother of North Myrtle Beach are his wife, Clair Parker Anders; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara “Barbie” and John Eric Fulda of Columbia and Amy and Ceth Land of Manning; son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Allison Anders of Columbia; and son, Adam Anders, also of Columbia; grandchildren, Jamie Land, Caroline Land, Anders Land and Addison Anders; brothers, Donnie Anders of North Myrtle Beach and Michael Anders of Columbia. He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Anders.

Services were held Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The Reverend Bob Heppenstall officiated.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of South Carolina School of Law, 701 South Main St., Columbia, S.C. 29208, the Clarendon School District 2 Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1252, Manning, S.C. 29102, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Charles E. Atkinson Sr.

Mr. Charles E. Atkinson Sr., 72, died March 5, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia after an extended illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late William Thomas Atkinson and the late Ethel Corrine Morris Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson was a graduate of Sherwood High School and attended Spartanburg Junior College. He was a retired insurance representative where he received numerous accolades. He was a member of Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as Minister of Music. He was well known in the field of gospel music. He and his family traveled extensively throughout the Carolinas in concerts, camp meetings, revivals and other Christian functions. They also had several recordings to their credit with Reflection Studios in Charlotte, N.C. He will be most remembered for his singing at funerals, which numbered in the hundreds. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He dearly loved the land of his birth, “Puddin’ Swamp.” He was a beloved husband, daddy, granddaddy, great-granddaddy, son and brother.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dotsy Bingham Atkinson of Turbeville; and three daughters, Donnette A. (Steve) Morris of Turbeville, Dr. Darlene (Michael) Atkinson-Moran of Florence and Debbie Atkinson (James) Lee of Scranton; three sisters, Rhoetta Oliva of Columbia, Lois Coker and Sylvia Jean Thomas of Turbeville; five brothers, Glellan Atkinson of Turbeville, Billy Atkinson of Scranton, Cecil Atkinson of Manning, Bobby Joe Atkinson of Andrews and J. T. Atkinson of Barnwell; 3 grandchildren, Stacy (Jajuan) Atkinson, Nicholas Morris and Chad Atkinson of Turbeville, and one great-grandson, Hunter Grant Atkinson of Turbeville.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles E. Atkinson Jr. and an infant son, Ricky Atkinson; an infant granddaughter, April Tiffany Floyd; a sister, Etheleen A. Thomas; and a brother, Donnie Hugh Atkinson.

Services were held on Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church in Turbeville. Burial followed in Olive Grove Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Olive Grove Church, c/o Cemetery Fund, Olive Grove Road, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Lewington Bradshaw

GREELEYVILLE – Lewington Bradshaw, 84, widower of Susie Witherspoon Bradshaw, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 19, 1919, in Greeleyville, he was the son of the late Henry Bradshaw and Dora Chatman Bradshaw. He received this education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and St. James School. During his youth, he joined St. James Baptist Church, were he served faithfully on the trustee board and the choir. He was a farmer all of his life.

Survivors include a son, Phil Bradshaw of Greeleyville; a son-in-law, Louis Reid of Greeleyville; a daughter, Anna “Carnie” (Charles B.) King of Manning; two sisters, Julia McFarlin of Salters and Ola Mae Bradshaw of Greeleyville; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy K. Reid, and a son, Ulysee Bradshaw.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at St. James Baptist Church, Coleman Road in Greeleyville The Revs. Albert Rose, pastor, and Johnny Williams, presiding, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Levern Brown and Minister Anthony B. Brown. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Ann J. Deans

Ann Johnson Deans, 71, wife of Cedric Deans, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia.

Born June 1, 1932, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Richard Huggins and Gertrude Garris Huggins.

Survivors, besides her husband, Cedric Deans of the home, include three sons, William Johnson Jr. of Tampa., Fla., Glenn Johnson of Summerton and Gregory Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five daughters, Joyce Dawkins, Cynthia Johnson and Olive Johnson, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Patricia Figueroa of Queens, N.Y., and Sharon Lee of Pemberton, N.J.; six sisters, Margaret Bey of Philadelphia, evangelist Williene Creque and Thomasine Porcher of Summerton, Maxine Jones and Jayne Myers of Long Island City, N.Y., and Pastor Gervadean Boyd of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, James E. Huggins of St. Albans, N.Y.

Services were held on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Davis Crossroads. The Rev. David Lawson, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Shelby Hatfield

Shelby Hatfield, 59, widow of Leroy Bruce Hatfield, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late McDuffie Miles and the late Mary Rodgers Miles. Mrs. Hatfield was employed by Leo’s Wings for a number of years.

Survivors include two sons, Gregg and Tim Hodge of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Terri Taylor of Bishopville; three brothers, Mack Miles, Johnny Miles and David Miles, of Manning; three sisters, Sherl Morris, Gwen Young and Libby Maroney; and one grandchild, Kyle Hodge.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Sumter Cemetery. The Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 1116 Manning Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.
