Florrie K. Hodge

BISHOPVILLE – Florrie K. Hodge, 75, wife of C.L. Hodge, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late William Kinder and the late Florrie M. Turbeville Kinder. She was a member of Memorial Chapel Church at Ashwood and was retired from Sumter Beauty College.

Survivors, besides her husband of Ashwood, include a son, Tony (Sherry) Hodge of Ashwood; three granddaughters, Dona (Fritz) Smith of Bishopville, Kathy (Jimmy) Cole of Sumter and Amy (Jamey) Lisenby of Sumter; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, William (Louise) Kinder of Hickory Hill; and a son-in-law, Don Smith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Smith; a son, Timothy Hodge; and a grandson, Anthony Hodge.

Services were held on Monday, March 8, 2004, in Memorial Chapel Church at Ashwood. The Rev. Ron Glass officiated the service. Burial followed in the Ashwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Lee County EMS, P.O. Box 927, Bishopville, S.C. 29010.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances M. Rogers

Frances Mitchum Rogers, 78, widow of Horace Rogers, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Dec. 2, 1925, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Shifley and Addie Jeffords Mitchum.

Survivors include a daughter, Georgette “Tina” Cannon of Myrtle Beach; nieces and nephews, Diane Mizzell and Jackie McLeod of Bishopville.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, March 7, 2004, in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Edward D. Wellborn Jr.

Edward Donald “Donnie” Wellborn Jr., 59, husband of Janice Greene Wellborn, died Sunday, March 7, 204 at Southeast Georgia Health Systems in Brunsbrick, Ga.

Born October 26, 1944, in North Wilkesboro, N.C., he was the son of Edward D. Wellborn Sr. and the late Minnie Nichols Wellborn. He attended Graham Baptist Church, was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of St. Alban’s Masonic Lodge in Lumberton, N.C., a member of the Jamil Shrine Club in Columbia and the owner and operator of Homes by Town and Country.

Survivors, besides his wife of Sumter and his father of North Wilkesboro, N.C., are one son, Trey (Brittany) Wellborn of Sumter; one daughter, Candace Wellborn of Sumter; a brother, Chris (Joan) Wellborn of Southlake, Texas; two nephews, Nicholas and Christopher Wellborn of Southlake, Texas.

Services were held Wednesday, March 10, 2004 in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. The Revs. Ken Atkinson John Patrick officiated the service.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 10, 2004 in the Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro, N.C.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to the Graham Baptist Church Building Fund, 4140 Hwy. 521 S., Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium was in charge of the arrangements.

Willie Westly Witherspoon

GOLDSBORO, N.C. – The Rev. Willie Westly Witherspoon, 61, widow of Virginia Witherspoon, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, in Goldsboro.

He was the son of the late Janice Bell Witherspoon McCoy and Henry Player of Turbeville.

Survivors include two daughters, Jackie Veney of Raleigh, N.C., and Wanda Truzy of Goldsboro; one son, Saquce Witherspoon of Goldboro; nine sisters, Creola Mickens, Carrie Bell McLamb, Ruth Player, Emma Lee Wells and Ruby Lee Player of Turbeville, Lillie Walker of Charlotte, N.C., Johnnie Easlery, Janet Miller and Angeline Jackson of Goldsboro; four brothers, Roy Lee and Ruben Player of Turbeville, Tyes Miller of Goldsboro, John Earl McCoy of Sebring, Fla.; nine grandchildren; two aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lois Ann Player.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Turbeville. Elder Zander Davis, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Marion H. Bradham Jr.

Marion H. Bradham Jr., 80, husband of 62 years to Billie Thomas Bradham, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at the home of his son in Augusta, Ga.

Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late Marion H. Bradham Sr. and the late Sally Virginia Gardner Bradham. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Summerton and served as a former member of the town council of Summerton. Mr. Bradham retired from the insurance business and made his home in Sumter until his death. He spent many years as an active member of the First Baptist Church in Sumter, where he served in many capacities. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in both World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors, besides his wife of Sumter, include two sons, Thomas M. Bradham Sr. of Evans, Ga., and David A. Bradham of Adams Run; three grandsons, Thomas M. Bradham Jr. of Columbia, Mitchell E. Bradham of Sumter, and Lee Bradham Barnes of Augusta; a granddaughter, Holly Bradham Walden of Augusta; proud great-grandfather of five; four brothers, Gilbert Bradham of Columbia, Roy Bradham of Conway, Raymond Bradham of Ridgeland, and Julian Bradham of Toccoa, Ga.; and two sisters, Sara Fazio of Palm Beach, Fla., and Betty Rahn of Sumter.

Services were held on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Dr. Jeff Burns and the Rev. Tom Mellette officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Summerton Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, 5232 Turbeville Highway, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Kristi Lynn Butler

Kristi Lynn Butler, 29, wife of Sherman Leon Butler, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born July 18, 1974, in Woodruff, she was the daughter of the late Bob and June Lock Hazard. She attended Home Branch Church of God of Prophecy.

Survivors, besides her husband of Manning, include her stepmother, Aggie Hazard of Franklin, N.C.; mother and father-in-law, Robert and Willie Nell Watford of Manning; a daughter, Amber Lynn Butler of Manning; a son, Dylan Lee Butler of Manning; four sisters, Shelly Pickel of Easley, Bobbi Hazard and Cheryl Clarmont of Wisconsin, and Summer Roach of Woodruff; two brothers, Raymond Hazard of Wisconsin and Steve Hazard of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Monday, March 15, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home of Manning. The Rev. Jeff Hunt officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Billy McGugan and Tracy Benenhaley.

Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Laurens, with Steve Pickel officiating.

Memorials may be made to Home Branch Church of God of Prophecy, 2211 Conner Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Barbara J. Way

Barbara Jane “Bob” Way, 70, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 12, 1933, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Charlton Carmichael Way and the late Blanche Victoria Way. She was a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church near Summerton.

Survivors include a sister, Elva Way Albertson of Ridgeland, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Pete Way and Woodrow Way; and three sisters, Miriam Jeanette Watkins, Willene Bryant and Mary Alice Barwick.

Services were held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, in Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike Murdoch officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to the Andrews Chapel U.M.C. Cemetery Fund, c/o Sarah Coulliette, 15149 Panola Road, Pinewood, S.C. 29125.

Robert T. Mitchell

Robert Thomas Mitchell, 79, companion of Mildred Pugh Lemon, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 1548 Winter Hill Road in Manning.

Born June 1, 1924, in the St. Paul section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Samuel A. Mitchell and Sarah Ann McBride Mitchell. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a retired painter and an employee of Jerry’s Truck Stop. He was a former member of St. Phillips RMUE Church.

Survivors besides his companion include a son, Robert (Sarah) Mitchell of Bishopville; three daughters, Earnestine (Rufus) Ragin of Columbia, Marie Mitchell of Summerton and Sabrenia G. Lemon of the home; two stepsons, Henry Lemon of Manning and Kenny (Edith) Lemon of Sumter; four stepdaughters, Sarah (Lun) Wells of Lanes, Gussie (Wayne) Johnson and Barbara A. Lemon, both of Manning, and Teresa (Damien) Lemon of Plant City, Fla.; 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 20, 2004, in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, in Manning, with the Rev. Henry Mitchell officiating, assisted by Minister John Nelson, Minister Jerry Johnson and Elder Sampson Pearson.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

D. Laford Richbourg

Davis Laford Richbourg,74, husband of Genevieve “Genny” Eaddy Richbourg, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at his home in Greeleyville.

Born April 29, 1929, in Foreston, he was a son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Carrie Holladay Richbourg. He was a retired truck driver for Mishoe Oil. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the American Legion Post and VFW in Kinsgstree.

Mr. Richbourg leaves behind his wife of Greeleyville; two daughters, Dawn (Billy) Reardon of Lexington and Janet (Randy) Elvington of Florence; two stepdaughters, Joyce B. Witherspoon of Kingstree and Charlene (Greg) B. Moses of Florence; a brother, Walter Richbourg of Manning; four grandchildren; four step-children; one step great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ben Richbourg.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 24, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial followed in Foreston Cemetery.

Maria Jane Riley

Maria Jane Riley, 90, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1914, in Wedgefield, she was a daughter of the late Murphey Riley Sr. and Menda Harvin Riley. She attended the Reese Chapel School. At an early age, she was baptized and became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the senior usher board until her health declined. She was also a member of the United Order of Tent, Order of Eastern Stars and the Household of Ruth. She was employed as a domestic worker.

Survivors include two sons, James (Rhonda) Riley Sr. of Philadelphia and Herbert (Marilyn) Riley of New Jersey; three granddaughters, Angelia (Albert) Brown, Denise (Luke) Stewart, both of Sumter, and Tara Robinson (David Gilbert), whom she reared of Wedgefield; one sister-in-law, Pearl Riley of Columbia; one son-in-law, Johnnie Lee Robinson Jr. of Paxville; seven grandchildren; one goddaughter, Julia Hammond of Sumter; a special cousin, David (Annie Mae) Murray Sr. of Wedgefield; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Mae Robinson; five brothers, Murphy Riley Jr., James Lewis Riley, Leroy Riley, Johnny Riley and Shockon Riley Sr.; one sister, Susannah Riley Hatley; one granddaughter, Annette T. Robinson; and one grandson, Jed M. Robinson, whom she reared.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.
