Robert Lee Holliday

Robert Lee (Bobby) Holliday, 45, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born on Feb. 12, 1959, in Summerton, he was a son of Dorothy Holliday Conyers and Richard Conyers of Sumter.

He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Mt. Chapel Baptist Church, Jordan, where he sang on the junior choir. He was a 1977 graduate of Manning High School. Upon graduation, he entered the armed forces where he served his country. After being honorably discharged from the United States Army, he made his home in Columbia, where he lived until his untimely death.

Survivors besides his parents include one son, Robert David Samuel of Connecticut; two brothers, Roosevelt Holliday and Richard A. Conyers of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two sisters, Cynthia (George) McDaniel of Charlotte and Jackie (George) Jacobs of Columbia; his grandfather, Willie Holliday of Sumter; and his grandmother Corine Conyers of Summerton.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 7, 2004, at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., in Sumter, with Bishop W.T. English, the officiating eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Lee Earnest Harvin.

Burial was in Florence National Cemetery, Florence.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Reader M. McClary

Reader Mood McClary, 77, of Destin, Fla., died Monday, May 31, 2004, in Cooper Hall in Mt. Pleasant.

Born Feb. 25, 1927, in Charleston, he was a son of the late William David McClary IV, and Maria Mood McClary. He was a retired banker and part owner of a travel agency in Destin, Fla. Mr. McClary was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by one sister, Doris McClary Rollins of Charleston; three nephews, William David McClary VI of Summerton, Carl Reader McClary of Atlanta, and Leland Gregory Rollins III, and his wife, Karen Boylston Rollins, of Charleston; three nieces, Doris McClary Rollins of Arlington, Va., Jessie M. Lee of Sumter and Maureen M. Bense of Summerville; two grandnieces, Kate McClary and Laura Rollins; and a grandnephew, Blake Rollins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William David McClary V.

Graveside services were held on Friday, June 4, 2004, in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210, or to Hospice.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Cecilia McCray

Cecilia McCray, 46, died May 30, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born May 17, 1958, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Willie “Son” McCray and Lugenia Eaddy McCray and stepdaughter of Josephine Dickey McCray. She received her formal education at East Clarendon High School, Turbeville, and graduated in 1977. She also attended Midlands Technical College in Columbia. In her youth, she joined Howard Chapel AME Church.

Survivors besides her stepmother of the home include five brothers, the Rev. Jerome McCray of Manning, Willard “Jimmy” McCray and John “Bobby” McCray, both of New Zion, Lee Ernest “Wooster” (Johnnie Mae) McCray of Kingstree and William (Audrey) McCray of Baltimore; a stepbrother, Waldo (Thelma) Dickey of Reading, Pa.; two sisters, Willie Jean (Jervie) Singleton of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Laura Brogdon of Baltimore; four stepsisters, Evelyn (Joseph) Witherspoon of Gable, Violivette (David) Knight of Sumter, Luethonia H. (David) Jackson of Bridgeport, Conn., and Oretta (Joe) Durant of Reading, Pa.; and one uncle, Harry Eaddy of Baltimore.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Burgess.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Howard Chapel AME Church, Old Manning Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, presiding, assisted by Elder R.L. McCants, the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Eddie Mayes, the Rev. Carnell Hampton, Elder R.L. McCants, presiding, and the Rev. Jerome McCray, eulogist.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy H. Mims

Mrs. Dorothy H. Mims, 89, widow of Lloyd P. Mims, died June 1, 2004, in Mary Immaculate Hospital, Newport News, Virginia. She was born January 27, 1915, in Manning, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. B. Wallace Holliday.

She was a graduate of Manning High School, a lifelong member of the Manning United Methodist Church where she was the recording secretary of her circle for 35 years and a member of the American Legion Auxilary. She retired from the Department of Social Services in 1980.

She is survived be a daughter, Dorothy Ann (Gary) Reinhart of Newport News; a sister, Kathleen L. Holliday of Hampton, Va.; a brother, Lawrence E. Holliday of Georgetown; two granddaughters, Donna M. Reinhart Jr. of Newport News and Deana R. Sharland of Vero Beach, Fla.; and two great grandsons, Ryan T. and Brandon L. Sharland of Vero Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dana Leigh Reinhart in 1977.

Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Debra Quilling, pastor of the Manning United Methodist Church, in the Manning Cemetery on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Manning United Methodist Church.

Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Leslie J. Phillips Sr.

KINGSTREE – Leslie J. Phillips Sr., 97, died Monday, May 31, 2004, in Kingstree.

Mr. Phillips was born Dec. 22, 1906, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Willie T. and Sally Coker Phillips. He was a retired farmer and salesman and a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Kathryn McClary Phillips.

Survivors include his daughters, Barbara P. Chandler of Greeleyville and Hazel P. Bradham of Manning; sons, Jervais Phillips of Cookeville, Tenn., Julian Phillips of Florence, Robert Phillips of Andrews and Reuben Phillips of Kingstree; sisters, Virginia Phillips of Florence, Naomi Ward and Ruth Grayson, both of Kingstree; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 3, 2004, in the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, conducted by his grandson, the Rev. Wil Bradham.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Williamsburg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Grove Baptist Church.

Regina Reardon

Miss Helen Regina Reardon of New Zion, 82, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, in a Kingstree nursing home.

Miss Reardon was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Reardon and Margaret Emma Mouzon Reardon. She was a graduate of Gable High School, class of 1938, and was retired from Superior Cleaners in Kingstree. Miss Reardon attended Midway Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, June 7, 2004 at Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church.

Jessie Wilson

Jessie Lee Burgess Sharpe Wilson, 72, widow of Julian “Bubba” Sharpe Sr. and the Rev. James Wilson, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at her residence in Manning.

Born Nov. 15, 1931, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Ella Lee Burgess. Mrs. Wilson was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Zion Hill Baptist Church in Paxville. She received her nursing certificate and training from Sumter Technical College. In 1998, she devoted herself to volunteering as a foster grandparent to children in Clarendon School District 2. Mrs. Wilson received several awards for her outstanding and dedicated service in nursing and caring for youth.

After moving to Baltimore, she joined St. Martin Church of Christ, Baltimore, Md., where she received salvation through the preaching of the Gospel. In 1971, she relocated to South Carolina and reunited herself with Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully with the Minister’s Wives, Ministry of Black River Association, Adult Sunday School Class and Missionary Department. She was also affiliated with Macedonia F.B.H. Church in Silver.

Survivors include two sons, Ramon Boyd of the home and Amos Sharpe of Chicago; three daughters, Dorothy (Maris) Singleton of Pinewood, Elouise Boyd of Sumter and Caro (Garfield) Jackson of Baltimore; one granddaughter, Jessica Smith of the home; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Daisy Pearson and Elder Cassie Mitchell, both of Baltimore, and evangelist Elizabeth Blanding of Silver; one brother, Elder Amos Burgess of Baltimore; two sisters-in-law, Susie Burgess and Rosa Burgess, both of Baltimore; one brother-in-law, Burnes Blanding of Silver; two aunts, Esther Davis of Lake City and Leah Brown of Paxville; additional siblings, Shirley Ann McCray, Frank Brunson, John Brunson, Wilbur Brunson, Ella Mae Brunson, Carolyn Bryant and Martha James; three devoted caregivers, Barbara Huggins, Barbara McConico and Marilyn Billups; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Julian B. Sharpe Jr.; one grandson, Andre Sharpe; one granddaughter, Ashley Sharpe; two brothers, Alfred Burgess and Bishop Willie R. Burgess Sr.; two sisters, Delois Burgess and Marie Servance.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, Minister Wanda Williams officiating, assisted by Elder Steve Burgess, Elder A. Burgess and the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr.

Burial was in Macedonia F.B.H. Church Cemetery, Silver.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Hattie Lee B. Bradshaw

GREELEYVILLE – Hattie Lee Benjamin Bradshaw, 73, widow of Udell Bradshaw, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born May 24, 1931, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Addison Benjamin Jr. and Marie McCoy Benjamin. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and formerly employed by Summerton Apparel and retired from the Clarendon County Council on Aging.

Survivors include two sons, Udell (Carolyn) Bradshaw and Aupell (Debbie) Bradshaw, both of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Debra A. Bradley of Greeleyville and Deloris (Charlie) Selvie of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Wilken (Carolyn) Benjamin; three sisters, Dorothy McCoy of Hartsville, Mollie (Horace) McPhail of Lanham, Md. and Fannie (Johnny) Gibson of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren; special nieces, Sarah Pinkney and Alice Brailey of Columbia; and cousins, Rosa Carr, Rosa Cantey and Linda Pressley, all of Manning.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Jean Benjamin, and a sister, Willie Mae Benjamin.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Pine Grove AME Church in Greeleyville, with the Rev. Francis Gathers, assisted by the Rev. Eliza E. Black.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

James E. Betrand Jr.

James Edward Betrand Jr., 61, husband of Evelyn McFadden Betrand, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born March 31, 1943, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Joshua Edward Betrand and Estell Anderson Betrand. He received his formal education at Scott’s Branch High School. In his youth, he joined New Light Missionary Baptist Church, Davis Station. He was a retired employee of Korn Industries of Sumter.

Survivors include three sons, Jeffery Betrand of Columbia, Pastor James Edward (Frieda) Betrand III of Manning and David Betrand of Covington, Ga.; two daughters, Brenda Lee Betrand of Hollywood, Fla., and Loretta Betrand of Manning; one brother, Lewis Betrand of Thomasville, N.C.; two sisters, Bessie Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ruby Mae Parker of Hartsville; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church in the Silver community, with the Rev. Ollie J. Hannah, pastor and eulogist Pastor James E. Betrand III, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Johnny Lawson and Minister Teresa Bracey.

Earline H. Wilson

Earline Hilton Wilson, 85, wife of Eugene Wilson, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born July 10, 1919, in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late August Hilton and Carrie Mathis Hilton. She accepted Christ at an early age and attended Mt. Calvary FBH Church and she later joined Mt. Carmel United Freewill Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as mother of the church, on the Missionary Society and Deaconess Board.

Survivors besides her husband, Eugene Wilson of the home, include one son, Timothy (Lillie Emma) Wilson of Manning; one grandson reared in the home, Lee Ernest Wilson of Manning; one daughter, Ruth Ella Richburg of Baltimore; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Beatha of Manning, Rosa Lee Wilson of Baltimore and Phillistine Nelson of Sumter; two sisters, Annie Liza Hilton and Clara Peterson, both of Manning; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, John Henry Wilson; three brothers, Percy, Isaac and Johnnie Hilton; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 at Mt. Calvary FBH Church, West Boyce Street, Manning, with the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, pastor, and Elder James McFarlin officiating, assisted by Elder M.R. Singletary, Elder K.L. Gibson, the Rev. Michael Abraham, evangelist Rhonda Nelson, and evangelist Ella Mae Eaddy.

Burial was at Fellowship Baptist Church, West Huggins Street, Manning.
