Kevinlin Wells Jr.

Kevinlin “Keith” Wells Jr., 19, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, in the Summerton community.

Born Jan. 26, 1985, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Kevin S. Wells Sr. of Summerton and Margaret Fuller of Miami. He was reared by his grandparents, Samuel (Hattie Mae) Wells of Summerton. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and Dade County schools, Miami. In his youth, he attended Spring Hill AME Church with his family. He was employed by Taw Caw Creek Nursery and Tomberlin Pole Treatment Co.

Survivors include two brothers, Anthony Wells and Otto Johnson, both of Miami; and six sisters, Jacquline Tindal of Miami, Tanika Biggins, Otteisha and Oushell Johnson, all of Miami, Sheila Carter of Summerton and Valencia Wells of Fort Campbell, Ky.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Spring Hill AME Church in Summerton, with the Rev. Phillip Mixon, pastor, and the Rev. Bobby McDonald officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Gertie Mae J. Pinkney

Mrs. Gertie Mae James Pinkney entered eternal rest on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004.

Born in Clarendon County on Oct. 30, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Julius and Hattie Richburg James. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Taw Caw Baptist Church. After her marriage to Mr. Calvin Pinkney, she later joined Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in several auxiliaries, namely the gospel choir, pulpit aide, Golden Age Ministry and the Missionary Society. She was employed by Sumter County School District 17 as a cook and Morris College.

She leaves to cherish memories, six sons, Mr. John Calvin (Mary) Pinkney, of Willow Grove, Pa.; Joseph Pinkney and Leroy (Mary) Pinkney, all of Sumter; Gerome (Geraldine) Pinkney, Leon Pinkney and Sammie Lee Pinkney, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; three daughters, Eva (James) Childrey Eleanor Smith of Philadelphia, Pa. and Mildred P. (James) Rogers, of Darby, Pa.; one sister, Mrs. Mattie P. Walters of Summerton; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Pinkney; two sons, Moses Pinkney and James Pinkney; and two daughters, Edith McDaniel and Hattie Epps.

Funeral service were held on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame, the Rev. Shelia B. Neal, the Rev. O.J. Hannal and the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, officiating.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Camilla T. McFadden

Evangelist Camilla “Minnie” Tindal McFadden, age 98, of Silver, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home, Silver.

Born in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Charles Monroe Tindal and Bertha Knight Tindal. She was the widow of Heyward McFadden.

She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as a youth and became a member of Friendship AME Church, Silver, where she served faithfully in many capacities. In 1945, she moved her membership to Macedonia FBH Church, Silver. In 1952, she was called into the ministry and served as a leader, teacher, trustee, choir member and associate pastor of Macedonia FBH Church, until her health failed.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

She leaves to grow from her memories two daughters, Elizabeth “Bess” M. Billie and Ruth M. Davis, both of Silver; one son, William R. (Elizabeth) McFadden of Sumter; one additional daughter, Edith (Leroy) Haigler of Philadelphia; and one brother, Fred Tindal of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Helen T. Robinson of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mary Robinson of Sumter; 37 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 42 great-great-grandchildren; six foster grandchildren; 24 foster great-grandchildren; 42 foster great-great-grandchildren; other close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday Aug. 5, 2004, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiated, assisted by Presiding Elder Keith Smith Sr., eulogist, and the Revs. Annie L. Riley and Joseph Postell.

Burial followed in the Macedonia FBH Church Cemetery in Silver.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Martin Holladay

Paul Martin Holladay, 34, husband of Melissa Friel Holladay, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at his home in Manning.

Born Jan. 12, 1970, in Manning, he was a son of Paul James and Ellen Alsbrooks Holladay. He was a welder and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides his wife and parents of Manning are a daughter, Kayla B. Holladay and a son, D.J. Holladay of the home; a sister, Amanda H. (Jay) Wall of Manning; a brother, John E. Holladay of Manning; maternal grandmother, Regina Alsbrooks of Inman; and maternal grandfather, Carliss Alsbrooks of Inman.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Memorials may be made to Free Will Baptist Home for Children, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Ella Mae M. Brown

Ella Mae McKenzie Brown, 90, widow of Jaris Brown, died Aug. 3, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born May 2, 1914, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ezekiel McKenzie and Olivia Rose McKenzie.

Survivors include three sons, Isiah Brown Sr. of New Zion, James Brown of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jerry Brown of the home; six daughters, Martha (Wesley) Butler Jr., Lettie (Johnny) McDowell, both of New Zion, Louisa Butler of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Celain Jackson of Gable, Verline (Raynold) Muldrow of Sumter and Peggy (Lee Ernest) Hicks of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Howard Chapel AME, Old Manning Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Jerome McCray, Vermell Humes, Eddie Mayes and Bobby McDonald.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Don L. Beasley

Don L. Beasley, 79, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004 at a local nursing home.

Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Elton D. Beasley Sr. and the late Verlie Skipper Beasley. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II where he received a Letter of Commendation for outstanding duty during enemy attacks and he was also a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving include two sons, Danny K. (Mary) Beasley of Lexington and Steven Beasley of West Columbia; one daughter, Kathy B. (Roy Jr.) West of Cassatt; one sister, Gladys (Alfred) Allsbrook of Sumter and Charles (Jackie) Beasley of St. Matthews; three half-sisters, Judy (John) Lindak of Santee, Alice (Ed) Russell of Sumter and Ann (Mac) Hemingway of Manning; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Beasley; and three grandsons, Todd West of Lexington and Jody Beasley of Pelion; one granddaughter, Tammy W. Burns of Columbia; and five great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by a brother, Elton Beasley Jr. and a half-brother, Edward Beasley.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in the Elmore-Cannon Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hancock officiating. Burial, with full military honors, followed in Piedmont Cemetery in Bishopville.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth C. Smith

LAKE CITY – Ruth Chandler Smith, 87, widow of Roy Smith, died Monday, July 26, 2004.

She was a daughter of the late Bossie and Rena Chandler McKenzie.

Survivors include three sons, Leroy (Sarah Jane) Smith of Turbeville, Sam Smith of Coward and Tommy Smith of Lake City; six daughters, Pearlie Mae Smith, Fannie Holmes and Gloria Smith, all of Lake City, Lou Ella Wright of Sumter, Ruthie Smith of Coward and Joretha (Alex) Gordon of Scranton; two sisters, Drucilla Hardy and Mary McLeod of Olanta; 36 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at St. Mark Believers Holiness Church in Lake City, with Elder Dr. Linwood Cooper officiating.

Burial was in McKenzie-Brown Cemetery.

Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of arrangements.

Cree Baker

Cree Ustine Bryer Baker, 90, widow of Harry “Ace” Baker, died Friday, July 30, 2004, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 18, 1913, in East Youngstown, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Steve and Veronica Melek Bryer. She worked 25 years as a florist with Briel’s Flowers in Youngstown.

Surviving are a son, Ronald (Sandy) Baker of Manning; a sister, Frances Schmidt of Austintown, Ohio; two brothers, Larry Bryer of Austintown, Ohio and Edward Bryer of Lowellville, Ohio; two granddaughters, Amy S. Baker of Tampa, Fla., and Maggie L Baker of Portland, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three sisters, Sally Jewesak, Irene Bryer and Josephine Hendricks; and four brothers, Steve, Andy, Billy and Walter Bryer.

A private burial was held in the Jordan United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Robertha H. Samuel

Robertha “Bertha” Harrison Samuel, 67, widow of Frank Holmes, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk, Conn.

Born Aug. 25, 1936, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Harrison and Georgianna Durant Harrison.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Alcolu. The Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg officiated, assisted by Evangelist Elizabeth Richburg, the Rev. O’Donald Dingle and the Rev. Roosevelt McFadden.

Burial was in Harmony Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Alcolu.

Harry Lee Brown Sr.

Harry Lee Brown Sr., 55, died Aug. 1, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born April 17, 1949, in Manning, he was a son of the late Victor Brown Sr. and Mattie Mae Montgomery Brown. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and attended Sumter Area Technical College. He joined Trinity as a young adult. He was honorably discharged from the United States Marines. While in the Marines, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He was employed by Verizon Communication for 26 years.

Survivors include two sons, Varech H. (Dinita) Brown of Bowman and Harry Lee (Angie) Brown Jr. of Dahlgren, Va.; one daughter, Florinda (Shawn) Dukes of Manning; two brothers, Victor (Yvonne) Brown Jr. of Miami and Stanly (Cynthia) Brown of Manning; two sisters, Mary (Fred) Mallett of Manning and Rosa Montgomery of Silver Springs, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Trinity AME Church, in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough officiating, assisted by the Rev. Delores Gerow, Minister Eddie Weldon and Michael Aiken.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery, Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
