Raymond Francis Kane

Raymond Francis Kane, 82, widower of Elizabeth Motto Kane, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born January 18, 1922, in New York City, he was a son of the late Edward and Frances Faye Kane. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, retired from the U.S. Dept. of Defense, a former member of VFW, and was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving are two sons, Raymond Michael (Linda) Kane of Summerton and Michael V. Kane of Chicago, Ill.; a brother Jude Kane of New York City; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Pat Goodwin officiating.

Burial followed in Florence National Cemetery in Florence.

Memorials may be made to the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 96570, Washington, D.C. 20077-7685.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Lee J. McFadden

Jessie Lee Jordan McFadden, 74, widow of Gerald McFadden, died Sept. 4, 2004 in Alcolu.

Born Oct. 1, 1929, in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Jordan and Jessie Davis Jordan McFadden and stepdaughter of the late Clarence McFadden. She received her education in the public schools of Florence County. She accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Philadelphia. Upon moving back to South Carolina, she affiliated back with Melina Presbyterian Church USA and was a faithful member.

Survivors include three daughters, Elvira McFadden of the home, Mary Alice McFadden and Rhodina Jordan of Philadelphia; 22 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, James and Melvin McFadden; and one brother, Eugene Jordan Jr.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Melina Presbyterian Church (USA), Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Andrew Hawkins

Robert Andrew Hawkins, 58, widower of Ruby Dell Burgess Hawkins and husband of Shirley Bosier Hawkins, died Sept. 3, 2004, in Manning.

He was born Oct. 4, 1945, in Jamestown, the son of Susie Bell Hawkins Dingle and the late Andrew Hawkins and stepson of the late Rev. Eddie W. Dingle.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined White Oak AME Church in Davis Station. He later became a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Jordan, where he served as a trustee and a member of the adult choir. He was employed at Santee Print Works in Sumter for 25 years in the maintenance department.

Survivors include his mother, Susie Bell Dingle of Manning; his wife, Shirley B. Hawkins, of the home; two sons, Scott (Terry) Hawkins and General Lee Hawkins, both of Manning; a daughter, Rhunette (David) Alston of Wedgefield; two stepchildren, Donnie (Tammie) Mack and Regina (Marvin) Pompey, both of Manning; six brothers, Millard Dingle of Meriden, Conn., Harry Dingle of Baltimore, Roosevelt Dingle of Washington, D.C., Isaiah Dingle of Hartsville, John (Evelyn) Hawkins of Brooklyn, and N.Y, Joseph (Rosa) Dingle of Manning; four sisters, Bertha Hawkins of Tulsa, Okla., Isabella Lewis of Jamestown, Maeshell (Joe) Wallace of Manning, and Lilease Dingle of Baltimore; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Antioch Baptist Church in the Jordan community.

Burial followed in the Antioch Memorial Gardens.

The Rev. Antonio Lee, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Stanley E. Hayes Sr., the Rev. O’Donald Dingle and evangelist Evelyn Murry Drayton.

Geneva H. Deaton

Geneva Howard Deaton, 64, wife of Floyd O’Neal Deaton, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 13, 1940, in Jessup, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Therrell C. and Iris L. Davis Howard. She was employed by Campbell’s Soup Co. in Sumter from 1965 to 1990, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides her husband of Rimini are a son, James A. Deaton and wife, Vicki, of Sumter; two daughters, Beverly Merrill and Gerri Merrill, both of Rolla, Mo.; a brother, Jack Howard of Rimini; two sisters, Juanita H. Kohl of Cross and Carolyn H. Calhoun of Hanahan; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Gene Mosier officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

James Pendergrass

Deacon James Pendergrass, 78, widower of Ruth Dingle Pendergrass and Mildred Bivens Pendergrass, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born April 10, 1926, in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Enoch Pendergrass and Jettie Gamble Pendergrass. He received his formal education at Rosenwald School in Clarendon County. He was first a member of Pine Grove AME Church, Greeleyville, and later joined Manning Progressive Church of Jesus, serving as church treasurer and chairman of the deacon board. He was also a member of Lodge No. 12, Kingstree, where he served as treasurer.

Survivors include three sons, Deacon Jerome (Carolyn) Pendergrass, James (Beverly) Pendergrass and Deacon Charles (Rosa) Pendergrass, all of Manning; six daughters, Rosa (James) Goodwin of Eastover, Ethel (James) Fulton and Charlotte (Steve) McCready, both of Baltimore, Mamie (Johnnie) McFadden and Bobbie (George) Wilson, both of Manning, and Helen (Timothy) Hamlet of Kingstree; two brothers, Durant (Emma) Pendergrass of Sumter and Robert (Mattie) Pendergrass of Alcolu; three sisters, Dorothy Cohens of Greenville, Ruth McClary and Dale Pendergrass, both of Sumter; 31 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one adopted granddaughter, Terrie (Corey) Rivers of Columbia; and two grandsons he reared as his own, Timothy Pendergrass of Sumter and Kevin Pendergrass of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elsie Reed; three grandchildren; three brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Manning Progressive Church of Jesus with Bishop James B. Wilson, pastor and eulogist and Elder Gloria Cooper presiding.

Burial was in St. Matthew Cemetery in Manning.

Julia W. Warren

Julia W. Warren, 84, wife of John Wiley Warren, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at a local nursing center.

Born in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Julius H. Watts and the late Rulist Dukes Watts. Mrs. Warren was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was retired from Campbell Soup Co.

She was twice married, first to the late Rollie M. Conyers.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; four sons, Charles L. Conyers, Thomas A. Conyers and Frankie “Jim” Conyers, all of Sumter, and Eugene Conyers of Alcolu; a brother, J.C. Watts of Turbeville; four sisters, Virginia Coker of Lake City, Evelyn Wilkerson of Fitzgerald, Ga., Christine Kirkland of Walterboro, and Margaret Spigner of Alcolu; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Sims.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Burial followed in Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Gladys Bethea-Simon

Gladys Bethea-Simon, 66, widow of Austin Simon, died Aug. 11, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 27, 1937, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Lovie Bethea and George Wade. She received her formal education in Virginia. She was a lifelong member of Trinity AME Church in Manning. She was a devoted member of the senior choir, Missionary Society, Willing Workers, Board No. 3 and former steward. She was employed for many years at Dewey Clark Dry Cleaners. Later she established her own business and was a successful businesswoman.

Survivors include two sons, James (Francena) Bethea and Freddie (Diana) Bethea, both of Manning; one daughter, Patricia Bethea of Queens Village, N.Y.; one brother, Clarence Wade of Los Angeles; one sister, Willie B. Wright of Los Angeles; six grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Vernon Odell and Darrell Bethea; three sisters, Mildred Ballard, Georgianna Bracey and Mary Ellen Pringle; and two brothers, Melvin Wade and John Andrew Wade.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004 at Trinity AME Church in Manning with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Michael Abraham.

Billy E. Rufus

The Rev. Billy E. Rufus, 70, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Roper Hospital in Charleston.

Born in Witt, Ill., on Jan. 8, 1934, he was a son of the late William Dennison Rufus and Imogene Hutchins Rufus. He grew up in Witt and attended the schools there. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss. and Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. He was the pastor of Andrews Presbyterian Church and had served there for over 34 years. He was former pastor at Central Presbyterian Church near Kingstree and New Covenant Church in Manning. He loved and recorded country music.

Surviving are his wife, Betty McGuire Rufus of Andrews; two sons, Thomas D. Rufus and Michael D. Rufus, and a daughter, Vicky R. Moree, all of Andrews; a brother, Ronald R. Rufus of Witt, Ill.; seven sisters, Ramona Corbin, Beverly Brizele, Sylvia Rufus, Connie Crowder and Amber Laurenzana, of Springfield, Ill.; Betty Willa of St. Louis and Shirley Roby of Traveler’s Rest; and five grandchildren, Kevin Rufus, Matthew Rufus, Chad Moree, Jeremy Rufus and Kate Rufus, of Andrews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Dale and Sonny Rufus.

Funeral services were Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004 at Andrews Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Paul Miles officiated the service.

Burial followed in Andrews Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Andrews Presbyterian Church, 104 S. Rosemary St., Andrews, S.C. 29510.

Sarah C. McBride

Mrs. Sarah Canty McBride, age 88, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at the home of her daughter in Columbia.

She was born in Summerton, on April 10, 1916, in Summerton, to the late James E. Canty and Susan A. Martin Canty. She was the widow of Robert E. McBride. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her Lord and savior at an early age and joined Friendship AME Church, Silver. In 1947, Sarah joined Liberty Hill AME Church where she sang on the senior choir for 30 years and worked on the Stewardess Board. She was a class leader for 38 years and a member of the Missionary Board for 30 years. She worked in many other organizations until her health failed. She was employed as a cook with Clarendon School District 1 for 32 years.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Carrie, Bell, Mary and Anna; and three brothers, Edward, Robert Lee and Willie.

She leaves to grow from her memories a loving daughter, Rosena McBride Johnson of Columbia; a brother, John (Mary) Canty of Summerton; a grandson, Tonda McBride of Columbia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church. The Rev. Melvin J. Capers, pastor, officiated and was assisted by the Revs. Roosevelt Mitchell, John E. Canty, E.L. Delaine, Williene Creque and Tom Newboult.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.
