Preston Aiken

Preston Aiken, 76, widower of Novella Sinkler Aiken, died Oct. 16, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Aug. 17, 1928, in the St. Paul section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Lossie Aiken and Carrie Ragin Aiken. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined St. Matthews AME Church. He worked at Pinewood Sawmill and Martin Brothers Logging Co.

Survivors include one son, John Preston (Beverly) Aiken Jr. of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Diane C. Aiken of Manning; three grandchildren, Keisha (Keith) James and Lester “Pa” (Le Mel Pearson) Thomas, both of Summerton, and John D. Simmons of Savannah, Ga.; a great-granddaughter, Cashell James of Summerton; three aunts, Nora Lee Ragin of Miami, Jannie Carter and Lu Hampton, both of Summerton; three devoted nieces, Rosa Lee Conyers, Pamela Aiken and Denise Miller, all of Manning; and a host of other nieces and nephews; and four sisters, Mamie Cummings, Annie Mabel Conyers, Corrine Brown, all of Manning, and Susie Mae Wilson of Richmond, Va.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Elijah Aiken; and a daughter, Betty Ann Thomas.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor of St. Matthews AME Church, Summerton, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Saymon James and the Rev. Henry Mitchell.

Burial followed in St. Matthews Church Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Azalee Dickey-McCray

Azalee Josephine Baker Dickey-McCray, 93, widow of Hazel Dickey and Willie McCray, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Sept. 22, 1911, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Grant Baker Sr. and Lou Alice Burgess Baker. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined St. John AME Church, Workman community, where she served as class leader, missionary and president of St. John Joint Stock Lodge No. 711, Juvenile Chapter. She was a life member, serving 57 years of the Jordan Chapel Chapter No. 237 Order of Eastern Star. Later she joined Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she remained faithful and active until her death.

Survivors include six sons, Waldo (Thelma) Dickey of Reading, Pa.; the Rev. Jerome McCray of Manning, Lee Ernest (Johnnie Mae) McCray of Kingstree, Willard McCray and John McCray, both of New Zion, and William (Audrey) McCray of Baltimore, Md.; five daughters, Evelyn (Joseph) Witherspoon of Gable, Luethonia D. (David) Harper-Jackson of Bridgeport, Conn., Oretta D. (Joe) Durant of Reading, Pa., Violivette D. (David) Knight of Sumter and Willie Jean (Jervie) Singleton of New York, N.Y.; one brother, Hardy Baker of Manning; three grandchildren reared in the home, Anthony (Sonia) Dickey, Geneice (Hensford) Stewart and Hazel (Roseanne) Witherspoon; three great-grandchildren of the home, Xavier Thompson, Dalton Stewart and Gillian Stewart; 21 additional grandchildren; 55 additional great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers; two sisters; three sons, Dovell, Hazel and Jenerette Dickey; and one daughter, Cecelia McCray.

The Jordan Chapel Chapter No. 237 Order of Eastern Star rites were held on Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at St. John AME Church in the Workman community of Kingstree. The Rev. Dr. Franklin Reaves, pastor, officiated and was assisted by the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Dr. Marion Newton and the Rev. Isaiah J. Myers.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Imogene S. Turner

Imogene Scott Turner, 69, widow of Saul S. Turner, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Charles E. Scott and the late Inez Gibbons Scott Barkley. Mrs. Turner was a member of New Start Baptist Church and was retired from Pinewood Manufacturing Co.

Surviving are two sons, Keith (Paula) Turner Sr. and John M. (Patricia) Turner of Sumter; two daughters, Faye L. Turner of Sumter and Shirley J. (Charles) Price of Niceville, Fla.; an adopted daughter, Amy (Jimmy) Scott of Sumter; a brother, Charles Scott of Sumter; two sisters, Myrtle Bynum of Sumter and Corrine Lynn of Houston; a stepsister, Hazel Turner of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Turner and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating.

Burial was in Calvary Church of the Nazarene Cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

J.L. Harrison

J.L. Harrison, 65, husband of Ethel Goodman Harrison, died Oct. 10, 2004, in Turbeville.

Born Oct. 31, 1938, in Turbeville, Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Pearl McDowell and Sam Harrison. In his youth, he attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where he accepted Christ as his personal savior. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In his early years, he moved to Paterson, N.J. He was employed with Center Lumber Co. for 30 years and retired and moved home.

Survivors besides his wife, Ethel G. Harrison of the home, include one son, Lee McFadden of Paterson, N.J.; two daughters, Debbie Austin and Yolanda Harris, both of Paterson, N.J.; two brothers, Willie Harrison of Turbeville and George “Bo” Harrison of Lake City; five sisters, Ida Mae Harley of Philadelphia, Sadie Rufus and Pearl Harrison, both of Turbeville, Meida Williams of Jamaica, N.Y., and Noble (Daniel) Stephens of Little River; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Turbeville, with Elder Zander Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray and the Rev. Lucious Wheeler.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Ondra M. Richburg

Ondra M. Richburg, 40, died Oct. 14, 2004, at his residence.

Born May 13, 1964, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Moses and Elder Rebecca McGett Richburg.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and continued his education in Atlanta, Ga. He was a member of St. Paul Holiness Church in the St. Paul community.

He is survived by three brothers, Curnell Bennett, Ernest Lee (Jean) Richburg of Summerton, and Moses Richburg, Jr. of Moreno Valley, Calif.; and three sisters, Thelma (Robert) Uzzell of Dundalk, Md., Willie Mae Gibson of Summerton and Selinda Cabbagestalk of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at St. Paul Holiness Church in the St. Paul community. Officiating ministers were Pastor Esther Madison and the Rev. James Blanding.

Burial folllowed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Elizabeth DuRant Rawlinson

Ruth Elizabeth DuRant Rawlinson, 94, wife of William James Rawlinson, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Jan. 25, 1910, in the DuRant community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Rees and Maggie Keller DuRant. She was retired from the Clarendon County Welfare Department. Mrs. Rawlinson was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, a charter member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, and was active in the community.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are a brother, L. Grier DuRant of Lake Ridge, Va.; a son, George DuRant Rodgers and wife, Margaret Ann, of Clemson; two grandchildren, Catherine I. Rodgers of Rock Hill and Beth Rodgers Gregory and husband, Will, of Clemson; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in New Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charlie Tyler, the Rev. Dr. Gordon Reed, Michael Sorrell and the Rev. Charles Alexander officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2833 Alex Harvin Hwy., Manning, S.C. 29102 or to New Harmony Presbyterian Church, 1174 New Harmony Presbyterian Church Road, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

Moses Lee Jones

Moses Lee Jones, 61, husband of Katie Mae Starks Jones, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at his residence.

Born Dec. 29, 1942, in Clarendon County, Mr. Jones was a son of the late Plummer and Millie Davis Jones.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of the Spring Hill A.M.E. Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Morall Jones of West Sayville, N.Y.; nine daughters, Tina Cooper of Reston, Va., Mozell (Allen) Thomas, Angie (Tracey) Gamble and Brenda (Alonzo) Jones all of Manning, Maria (Charles) Stukes of Sumter, Denise Jones of Columbia, Darlene (J.D.) Miller of Bishopville, Cynthia (Mack) McKenzie of Columbia, Gloria Jones of Tennessee; one adopted daughter, Barnett Bennett of Ft. Washington, Md.; one brother, Burgess Jones of New York, N.Y.; one sister, Ida Washum of Long Island, N.Y.; and 18 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at the Spring Hill A.M.E. Church in Summerton. Officiating ministers were the Rev. Phillip Mixon assisted by the Rev. O’Neal Miller, Evangelist Deloris Parker and Pastor O’Celia Blue.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Pernnise C. Gipson

Pernnise Caldwell Gipson, 98, widow of Willie Gipson, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Gipson was born to Robert Caldwell and Louvicia Heath Thrower Caldwell on June 19, 1906, in the St. Paul community of Summerton. She was educated in Clarendon County. Early in life, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and was a faithful member of Historical Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, where her duties never seemed a load. She was a member of the Missionary Board and was a stewardess. Mrs. Gipson was married to the late Willie Gipson. This union was blessed with six children.

Mrs. Gipson’s loving memories will be cherished by her daughters, Mae Gipson of Philadelphia, Bertha Gipson, Eartha Richardson and Carrie Gipson of Chester, Pa.; a granddaughter, Charlene Gipson reared in the home; eight other grandchildren, Melvin Gipson, James Gipson, Leonard Gipson, Lorriane Gipson, Jestine Mellerson, Clyde Smythe, Monica Richardson and Doris Ragin; 11 great-grands; five great-great-grands; four step-grandchildren, Eartha Lee Bennett, Frances Green, Glendora Thames and Cleveland Frazier; two brothers, Abraham Caldwell of Summerton and Sam Caldwell (Cora) of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two sisters, Mageline Moultrie and Fannie Gibson of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by two sons, John Gibson and James Gibson; four brothers, Malachi Caldwell, Major Caldwell, Wade Caldwell and Calvin Caldwell; and four sisters, Bertha Gipson, Earline James, Malahia Bonaparte and Ester Rivers.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, with the Rev. Melvin Capers, assisted by the Rev. E.L. DeLaine, the Rev. Warren Hatcher and the Rev. Henry Mitchell.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Anthony L. Cantey

Anthony “Pop” Levon Cantey, 44, husband of Thelma Ruth White Cantey, died Oct. 1, 2004, on I-26 in Laurens County, as a result of an accident.

Born Dec. 20, 1959, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Charles Lee Wilson and Lillian Cantey. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Union Cypress AME Church. Later in life, he joined New Covenant Apostolic Church in Greeleyville. He was a dedicated member, serving as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, on the gospel choir, trustee board and in any other capacity needed. He was a licensed truck driver and employed by P.B. Industrial in Charleston.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Ruth White Cantey of the home; his father, Charles (Margie) Wilson of Alcolu; his mother, Lillian Cantey of Norwalk, Conn.; three sons, Martin (Erica) White of Laurel, Md., Robert White of Manning and Antwane Cantey of the home; two daughters, Sabrina Cantey of the home and adopted daughter, Tameka (Aaron) Robinson of Conway; two brothers, Larry (Erma) Cantey of Milford, Conn., and Charles “Joey” Wilson Jr. of Greenville; 10 sisters, the Rev. Vivian Cantey of Orangeburg, Charlene (Frankie) Frierson, Monique Wilson, Loretta Conyers, Patricia (Wilbert) Holiday, Gwendolyn Myers, all of Manning, Larraine Holiday of Florence, Donna (Eric) Heyward of Durham, N.C., Stacy and Tracy Wilson of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

He was reared by his grandmother, the late Pattie York Cantey, and his aunt, Clara David of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at New Covenant Apostolic Church in Greeleyville, with Bishop W. Ron Dunmore, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Kenneth Swaringer Sr. and District Elders James Holliday and Preston Keels.

Burial followed in Hunter Cemetery.

Emma Lee M. Fulmore

Emma Lee Muckle Fulmore, 58, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at 1792 Kingstree Hwy., Manning.

Born Dec. 18, 1944, in Kingstree, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Muckle and Sadie Mae Greene Muckle and great-granddaughter of the late Champpie and Rosa Burgess Greene. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she accepted Christ and became a member of Providence AME Church in the Sugar Hill community of Manning. After moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., she joined Antioch Baptist Church. She rejoined Providence AME Church after relocating back home. She was employed with 20th Century Glove Factory for more than 20 years and six years at Carroll Industries.

Survivors include two sons, James L. (Mona) Fulmore of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Aaron Fulmore of Kershaw; two daughters, Diana (Clinton) McKenzie and Joyce (Antelnello) Hodge of Manning; one uncle, James S. Greene of Manning; four aunts, Ruby (Malcolm) Hunter of Columbia, Janie (James T.) Spry and Wilma Houston of Manning, and Sarah Wilson of East Orange, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Robert Pendergrass of Sumter, Aisha Fulmore, Cierra Hodge, DeAngelo Hodge, Jazmine Fulmore and Tyrese McKenzie of Manning, and Katrell Fulmore of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one great-grandchild, Kavareona Tindal of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 1, at Providence AME Church, Sugar Hill community, Manning. Presiding Elder Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Elder Marlin Clemons, Minister Clinton McKenzie, and the Revs. O’Donald Dingle, Effie Hilton and Bobby McDonald. Burial followed in Providence AME Church Cemetery.
