W.R. Gray

William Ralph Gray, 80, husband of Rebecca Holladay Gray, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born Feb 20, 1923, in Bennettsville, he was the son of the late Luther and Beulah Gray Gray. He was a retired general contractor, a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and a member of Union United Methodist Church in Wilson.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, include a son, Jack (Judy) Gray of Greeleyville; a daughter, Kanda G. (Raymond) Brunson of Greenwood; a sister, Jincy Green of Clio; one granddaughter and three grandsons.

Services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 4, in Wilson Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joseph A. Poston officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Miriam Hadden. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers included Kyle Holladay, Kelly Cannon, Lionel Marion Holladay Jr., John Igo, Charles Barrett and Bert Holladay.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Cynthia F. Hilton

Cynthia Frazier Hilton, 48, wife of Robert Hilton, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born Sept. 13, 1955, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Fannie Mae Frazier.

She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, serving faithfully on YWA until her health failed. She was a former employee of the Manning Restaurant.

Survivors, beside her husband, includes two daughters, Tasha D. Frazier and Destiney Frazier of Manning; three grandchildren, Jimmique, K’daisia and J’nyia of Manning; two brothers, Cleveland Frazier of Opa-Locka, Fla., and James Gibson Jr. of Sumter; and six sisters, Eartha Bennett, Dorothy Bryant and Charlene Gibson, all of Summerton, Frances Green of Jamaicia, N.Y., Glendora Thames of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Jestine (Calvin) Mellerson of Opa-Locka, Fla.

She was preceded in death by three uncles and two aunts.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, U.S. 301 South in Summerton. The Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Jonathan Anderson and Effie Hilton.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

James A. Hilton

Mr. James Aaron Hilton, 32, husband of Mrs. Debbie Singletary Hilton, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, in Coward.

Born Nov. 4, 1970, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mrs. Dorothy M. Hilton and the late Marion Hilton Sr. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and he was a member of Church of God by Faith, Davis Station. He was employed in the construction industry for several years in Florida and South Carolina.

Survivors, besides his mother, Mrs. Dorothy M. Hilton of Manning, include two sons, Kelsey and Akaime Cousar of Alcolu; five stepsons, LaRue, Tyrone, Terrance and Antoni Singletary of Lake City and Charles Hawkins of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Shaquetta Cousar of Alcolu; one stepdaughter, Whitney Singletary of Lake City; three brothers, Marion Hilton of Manning, Kernell Hilton of Miami and Eddie (Marcia) Hilton of Columbia; four sisters, Lorraine (Jerry) McFadden of Scranton, Barabara Ann (Gregory) Martin, Debra Denise Hilton and Jackie Lewis of Manning; and one step-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Church of God by Faith, Davis Station. The Rev. Andre McBride and elder Thomas Davis, pastor, officiated the service.

Burial followed in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery, Silver.

Rev. Earl Lamm

The Rev. Earl Lamm, 68, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at his residence.

Born May 3, 1935, in Spring Hope, N.C., he was the son of the late Thee Ralph Lamm and Ellen Proctor Lamm. He was a retired Air Force veteran, retiring in 1975 with twenty-one years of service. He was a Vietnam War veteran and was awarded the airman’s medal. He was a graduate of Campbell College and was former pastor of Pinecrest Baptist Church in Andrews.

Survivors include his wife, Janet B. Lamm; one son, Charles Earl Lamm, of Georgetown; one daughter, Donna L. Pilchard of Georgetown; two brothers, Oliver Lamm and Durwood Lamm of Spring Hope, N.C.; two sisters, Joyce L. Glover and Christine Lamm of Spring Hope, N.C.; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Saturday, Nov. 1, in Pinecrest Baptist Church in Andrews. Burial, with military honors, followed in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens in Georgetown.

Anthony McConico

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Anthony McConico, 39, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Born Nov. 24, 1963, in the Rimini section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Lindburg Rhames and Mary Lou McConico.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning High School Class of 1982. In his youth, he attended Sunday school and worship service at Mount Pleasant UME church. He was employed by J.C. Penney Inc. as an associate sales manager.

Survivors include three brothers, Allen (Laura) McConico of Sumter, Joe Louis McConico of Manning, and Daniel (Irma) McConico of Rimini; three sisters, Willie Mae (Tommy) Spry of Paxville, Deloris McConico of Manning, and Juanita (Rodney) James of Sumter; two uncles, James (Jean) Bosier of Orangeburg, and Albertis (Betty) Bosier of Paxville; and three aunts, Margaret (Joe) Cole, Williene (Eddie) Johnson, and Jessie Mae (Solomon) Green of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a devoted friend, Scottie.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 1, at Mount Pleasant UME Church in the Panola Community of Pinewood with the Rev. James Robinson, pastor, officiating the service. Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Lawrence A. Peterson

Lawrence Alphonso “Pete” Peterson, 88, widower of Mamie Wilson Peterson, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Mariner Health of Sumter East in Sumter.

Born Jan. 29, 1915, in Gable, he was the son of the late Isiah Peterson Sr. and Lula Rose.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Chesterfield County and graduated from Coulter Academy High School in Cheraw. Initially, his career was at Horn ‘N’ Hardy Restaurant; from there, he joined the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was a trolley driver for New York City Transit followed by his employment at the New York City Sanitation Department until his retirement in 1992. He also did volunteer work for the New York City Auxillary Police Department.

Survivors include a brother, Tyce (Mary) Peterson of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters, Fannie Taylor of Albany, N.Y. and Rosetta (Willie) Kennedy of Gable; a goddaughter, Dauphine Buggs of St. Albany, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Olivia Peterson, of New York City; a brother-in-law, Bishop Wilson of Gable; and two adopted sisters, Eliza Bell of Brooklyn and Frances Cooper of New York City.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 1, at Melina Presbyterian Church in Sardinia. The Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Harvey L. Shelton

Harvey Lee Shelton, 74, husband of Foye Mosley Shelton, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at his home in Manning.

Born Sept. 19, 1929, in Mt. Airy, N.C., he was the son of the late Lemuel and Polly Clement Shelton. He was retired from commercial and residential construction and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, include a daughter, Sherry Thompson of Alcolu; three sons, Steven Michael Shelton and Stanley Alan Shelton of Manning and Brian Phillip Shelton of Merritt Island, Fla.; three brothers, Charles Shelton of Yadkinville, N.C., Duke Shelton and Joe Shelton of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a sister, Kathleen Barnes of Mt. Airy; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 2, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Bennie Turner and Jimmy Eldreth officiated the service. Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, SC 29150.

Victoria J. Stevenson

Mrs. Victoria Junious Stevenson, 58, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Nov. 5, 1944, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Ralph Junious and Mrs. Bessie Ellison Junious. Vickie created a self-image in life that showed the best side of living. Vickie was a loving mother, sister and a kind friend. She was a lifelong member of Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church.

Survivors include three sons, Mr. Hazel Junious of Summerton, Mr. Leo Junious of Loris and Mr. Amos Stevenson of College Park, Ga.; a daughter, Ms. Roberta Stevenson of Mississippi; two brothers, Mr. Charlie (Barbara) Junious of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mr. Joseph (Carolyn) Junious of Brooklyn; eight sisters, Rosa Mae (Joe) Williams of Summerton, Mary Junious, Williene Kensey and Lula Mae Brown of Brooklyn, Margaret Simon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Annie Mae Bobb of Brooklyn, Patricia Canty of Irvington, N.J. and Queen Jones of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two adopted children, Lelia and Corey Phillips of Summerton.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 1. The Rev. Warren E. Hatcher, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church Cemetery.

Daniel Stinney

NEW YORK CITY – Daniel Stinney, 60, widower of the late Eltonia Powers, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, in New York City.

Born Oct. 4, 1943, in Summerton, he was the son of the late David and Annie Mae Williams Stinney.

Survivors include a stepmother, Christine Stinney of Florence; four sons; three brothers; five sisters; two stepsisters and two stepbrothers.

Services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Taw Caw Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson officiated the service. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas Way

Thomas Way, 74, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born, Nov. 12, 1928, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Arthur Way and Mary Brown Way. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He joined Beulah UME Church at an early age.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frazier Way; one son, Thomas Way Jr. of Bishopville; two stepsons, Albert (Blanch) Frazier of Bishopville and Samuel Frazier of Philadelphia; six daughters, Mary L. (Benjamin) Jackson of Philadelphia, Deloris Way of Sumter, Thomasina Way and Frances Way of Philadelphia, Shirley Way and Catherine (Anthony) Williams of Bishopville; one sister Lelia Sinkler of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Jerusalem Stucky Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Julia Sanders officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Rufus Blackwell

Rufus Blackwell, 92, husband of Susan Dupree Blackwell of the home, died Oct. 31, 2003, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born May 9, 1911, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late John and Maggie Tomlin Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell was raised as a child in the Westminister Presbyterian Church, where he attended with his family. He later received Christ at the Greenhill Baptist Church in Clarendon County. After relocating to Sumter, he joined the Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member for most of his life. He attended school in Clarendon County. For many years, he was employed by the Shaw Lumber Co. and later with the Avery Lumber Co., where he retired after many years of service. Mr. Blackwell enjoyed the outdoors and would walk and ride his bicycle all around Sumter. He was especially devoted to his dog, Tiny, who he walked every day. He and Tiny would go wherever they wanted to go. He was a quiet, unassuming man who was deeply devoted to his wife, Susan, whom he married on Sept. 9, 1993.

Surviving are his loving wife, Susan Dupree Blackwell of the home; two daughters, Edith (Frank) Davis of Fort Worth, Texas, and Carolyn (Leon) Pitts of Columbia; five sons, Willie (Doris) Dupree and Joshua (Bessie) Dupree of Sumter; Isiah (Carmen) Dupree of Silver Spring, Md., Gary Dupree of Alexandria, Va., and Gregory (Monica) Dupree of Charlotte, N.C.; a caring niece, Betty Miller of Sumter; 29 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at Salem Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. N. LaMonte Newsome, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Elder Willie Dupree and the Revs. Dr. Juenarrl Keith and Joshua Dupree.

Burial followed in Westminister Presbyterian Cemetery.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
