Ronald J. Campbell Sr.

Ronald (Ron) John Campbell Sr., 69, husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Tucker Campbell, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Aruba, West Indies, he was a son of the late Lee Campbell and Catherine Gibson Campbell.

Mr. Campbell was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364 A.F.M. He was a former pavement engineer at Shaw Air Force Base after 30 years of service and was currently the owner and operator of Campbell Paving Specialties Inc. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; one son, Ronald John (Johnny) Campbell Jr. and wife, Pam, of Sumter; one daughter, Donna Campbell Prothro and husband, William, of Manning; one brother, Lee Campbell of Baton Rouge, La.; one sister, Sara Simpkins of Ontario, Canada; five grandchildren, William Stroman (Stro) Prothro, Evan Campbell Prothro, McKenzie Marshall Prothro, John Lee Campbell and Caroline Sanchez Campbell.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Bob Dyson

FLORENCE – Bob Dyson, 103, husband of Hazel Lewis Dyson and previously husband of the late Sallie Greene Dyson, died Thursday, November 6, 2003, at Commander Nursing Home in Florence.
Born Oct. 16, 1900, in the Fort Watson Community of Summerton, he was the son of the late Ravenel and Sylvia Dyson.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Historic Liberty Hill A.M.E. Church in Summerton. He worked on the railroad and as a farmer. He also worked construction as a bridge builder. He helped construct bridges on I-95 and Highway 301. He was also a member of St. Luke Masonic Lodge #271 of Pamplico. For many years after his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening and was an avid lover of various animals, which he raised.

Survivors, besides his wife, includes six sons; James Gar, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Willie Dyson of Conyers, Ga., Joe Dyson, Elijah M. Mention and the Rev. Dr. Bubby Dyson of Florence, and Aaron Dyson of Atlanta; eight daughters, Annie M. Brooks and Willene Reagin, of Florence, Evelyn Oliver of Darlington, Hazel Woodbury of Olanta, Earlene Dickerson and Lillie Brown of Summerton, Willa Mae Scott of Manning and Dorothy Mae Bostick of Pamplico; 55 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Dyson Livingston.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Historic Liberty Hill A.M.E. Church in Summerton. The Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Bubby Dyson, the Revs. Sally Lester, Henry Mitchell and Minister Gip Livingston.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

William Gamble

Mr. William (Bill) Gamble, 63, of New Zion, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, after a brief illness. He was convalescing with his daughter and her family in Lexington.

A memorial service for Mr. Gamble was held on Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Sumter Second Presbyterian Church on Pocalla Road in Sumter.

Memorials may be made to the Men’s Council of Sumter Second Presbyterian Church.

Greenlawn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

J. Elree Goins

GREELEYVILLE – James Elree Goins, 55, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, in Williamsburg Regional Medical Center in Kingstree.

Born April 2, 1948, in Greeleyville, he was the son of Katherine J. Goins and the late James Dewey Goins. He was a retired truckdriver and was of the Chruch of God faith.

Survivors include his mother of Greeleyville; five brothers, Billy Jim “Jimmy” Goins, Ronnie Goins, Bobby Goins, John Edward “Pete” Goins and William “Honk” Goins of Greeleyville; a sister, Patricia Goins Haselden of Greeleyville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 6 in Goins Cemetery. The Rev. Oliver Lang officiated the service.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

William H. LeRoux

William H. “Bill” LeRoux Jr., 69, husband of Janis LeRoux, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at his home.

Born in Lakeland, Fla., he was the son of the late William Henry LeRoux Sr. and the late Elma Mae Sapp LeRoux.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a member of the Po-Boy’s Bass Club. He was a Navy veteran with 20 years of service and served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was also a retired truck driver and the captain of security at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Survivors, besides his wife of the home, include two sons, Billy (April) LeRoux of Wedgefield and Andy (Amanda) LeRoux of Pinewood; a sister, Patsy Middleton Peterson of Florida; a brother, David Middleton of Maryland; two grandchildren; a nephew, Don Middleton (Jane) of Beverton, Ore.; and a niece, Debra Middleton Menacho of San Jose, Calif.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Bishop Marion Ardis officiated.

Private burial followed in the Florence National Cemetery.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Lee McNeil

BALTIMORE – Mrs. Rosa Lee McNeil died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003.

Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Dozier, Lorraine Dozier and Irene Dozier; six brothers, Eugene Fulton, James Fulton, Lincoln Fulton, Thomas Fulton, John Fulton and Eugene Singleton; six sisters, Hulene Pendergrass, Elma McDonald, Louise Jones, Ethel Fulton, Lila Mell Dozier and Henrietta DuPree, all of Manning.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at St. Luke Apostolic Temple, in Baltimore. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Russ Funeral Home of Baltimore, was in charge of the arrangements.

James Plowden Sr.

Mr. James Plowden Sr., 76, husband of Easter Servance Plowden, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 30, 1927, in Manning, he was the son of the late Warren Plowden Sr. and Lula Johnson Plowden. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church and was a member of the Trustee Board. Prior to retirement, he was employed with Montauk Rug and Carpet Co. for 25 years in East Farmingdale, Long Island, N.Y.

Survivors include three sons, Deacon Lenon (Kate) McDuffie, Enozle “Vic” Plowden and James (Rosa) Plowden Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Odessa (Willie) Dennison of Queens, N.Y., and Easter (Albert) Bells Sr. of Stratford, Conn.; one brother, Warren (Wilhemenia) Plowden Jr. of Manning; five sisters, Annie (Charlie) Riddicks of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ethel (James) Sinkler, Martha Bines, Janie (Bernell) Gibson and Cassie (Willie) Gibson of Manning; 26 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ola; three brothers, David, Eugene and Edward; and one sister, Dorothy.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003 at St. John Freewill Baptist Church, Bloomville community. The Rev. Otis Wright, Ministers Major Lloyd, Anthony Mouzon and Calvin Burgess officiated the service.

Burial followed in St. Matthews Cemetery, Manning.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Joe L. Robinson Sr.

FLORENCE – Joe LeBow Robinson Sr., 73, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, after several years of declining health.

He was born in Lenoir City, Tenn., a son of the late Doyle and Nell LeBow Robinson. He was an Independent Life Insurance agent. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Florence and the Fifty-Year Club. He worked actively with people with disabilities and special needs at the Little Red Brick School and Camp Courage. He was a member of the Amity Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Faircloth Robinson of Florence; a son, Joey (Raine) Robinson of Florence; a daughter, Debra R. (David) Hanna of Summerton; two sisters, Mary Ruth (Joe) Nickel of Maryville, Tenn., and Agness Richardson of Northport, Ala.; two brothers, Glenn (Ruth) Robinson and Carl (Vivol) Robinson, both of Lenoir City, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Robinson of Newport, Tenn., and Ruth Robinson of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren, Greg Talerico, Cary T. Kurhela, Ashley, Matt and Sarah Elizabeth Robinson; two step-grandchildren, Monica and Brad Hanna; and a great-grandchild, Hailey Susan Kurhela.

Mr. Robinson was predeceased by a daughter, Susan R. Talerico; and three brothers, Jim Robinson, Elwood Robinson and Jack Robinson.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Susan G. Smith

Susan Graham Smith, 94, widow of Eugene Smith, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, in Lifecare Center of Charleston.

Born Aug. 10, 1909, in Foreston, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Elliott Graham and the late Louise Elizabeth Thames Graham.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Harper of Charleston and Juanita Eason of Jacksonville, Fla.; a granddaughter, Melanie Padgett Telles of Keller, Texas; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joella Smith Padgett.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at the Foreston Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

John E. Thames

John E. “Billie” Thames, 70, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 1, 1933, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Johnnie Thames and Janie Levy Thames. In his youth, he attended Bethlehem Baptist Church. In later years, he moved to Miami, where he was employed by Fountain Beau Hotel and Restaurant as a short order cook for several years. After returning to South Carolina, he worked for several construction firms.

Survivors include three brothers, George (Mivens) Thames of Summerton, Leon (Argenell) Thames of White Plains, N.Y., and Roosevelt Thames of Lake City; three sisters, Sue E. Sabb of the home, Roberta Lawson and Willene (Curtis) Wright, all of Summerton; and Sarah Pearson, a devoted niece.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Davis Crossroad community, Summerton, with the Rev. David Lawson, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Calvin Jackson and Minister Johnnie L. Lawson. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Lazaro J. Valdez

CHARLESTON – Infant Lazaro Jisiah Valdez died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at MUSC, Charleston.

Born Nov. 4, 2003, in Charleston, he was the son of Lazaro Valdez and Pastor Tameka Mouzon Valdez.

Survivors, besides his parents of the home, include one brother, Ryan Z. McKoy of the home; one sister, Jasmine Valdez of Elizabeth, N.J.; maternal grandparents, James P. Mouzon and Vermell C. Mouzon of Manning; paternal grandmother, Aleida Valdez of Newark, N.J.; paternal grandfather, Lazaro Offari of New York City; maternal great-grandfather, Sam W. Mouzon of Greeleyville; three aunts, Carrie Mouzon and Shkerra Mouzon, both of Manning, and Veronica Horne of Greeleyville; two uncles, Gregory Mouzon of Manning and Gregory Horne of Greeleyville.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Better Chance House of Deliverance, 1015 E. Boyce St., Manning. Tameka M. Valdez, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Bishop George Mitchell, Co-Pastor Mary Mitchell and Elder Clyde Mouzon. Burial followed in St. Matthews Cemetery, Kingstree Highway, Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
