Lila A. Bellinger

Lila Alsbrook Bellinger, 92, widow of John S. Bellinger, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at her home.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late McKeever Desausure Alsbrook and Elizabeth Marie Stukes Alsbrook.

Mrs. Bellinger was a member of Southside Baptist Church, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, the WMU and was active in all areas of the church.

Survivors include one sister, Marie Alsbrook of Columbia; one brother, Milton (Juanita) Alsbrook of Sumter; a brother-in-law, Lonnie Smith of Sumter; special cousins, Paul and Marilyn White; two special friends, Lillie Barwick and Alva Dority; and a host of other friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Southside Baptist Church. The Revs. Robert Skinner and Charlie Horne officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Lionel Myron Daney

Lionel Myron Daney, 40, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte.

Born May 23, 1963, in Alcolu, he was the son of Anette C. Edwards of Alcolu and Lionel Daney Jr. of Baltimore, stepson of David L. Edwards. He’s the grandson of Elder Harry P. Colclough and the late Pauline T. Colclough. His paternal grandparents were the late Lionel Sr. and Evelyn Daney.

He received his education in the public schools of New York City, graduating from Richmond Hill High School in South Ozone Park, N.Y. He received his B.A. degree from Morris College. He received numerous certificates and awards, to include The Outstanding Student Leader Award. He was a member of the Morris College Chorale.

He worked with the Lutheran Family Service as a Youth Councilor. He was also co-founder of “Child’s House Inc.” of Charlotte, a group home for troubled youths.

He relocated to Pompano Beach, Fla. where he worked with the Department of Social Services in child protective services for several years.

After returning to Charlotte, he pursued his ultimate calling where his started his own business, which later became Genesis Contracting and Interior Design.

He accepted Christ as his personal lord and savior in his early youth. He attended Westminster Presbyterian Church U.S.A. After moving to Charlotte, he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church where he was baptized. He later moved his membership to Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where he sang in the Youth Adult Choir.

Survivors, besides his parents and grandfather, include three sisters, Lorraine (Steve) Roberson and Adrea L. Franklin of Charlotte and Marie A. Daney of Alcolu; three brothers, Keith A. Daney of Charlotte, Darrell E. Daney of Alcolu and Kendrick L. Daney of Baltimore and maternal grandfather, Elder Harry P. Colclough of Alcolu.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 17, 2003 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, in Alcolu. The Rev. William Johnson, pastor officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Donnie Garis.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Patsy M. Frye

Patsy Edell McCoy Frye, 55, widow of Ted Levell Frye Sr., died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Hospital.

Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Leon R. McCoy and the late Nancy Ann McCoy Freeman.

Mrs. Frye was a member of Christian Tabernacle Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ted Levell Frye Jr. and Robert Perry Frye of Sumter; a daughter, Nancy Louise Parker of Sumter; four brothers, Glenn McCoy, Melvin McCoy, Tim McCoy and Leon McCoy of Sumter; a sister, Myrtle Ann Gibbons of Turbeville; five grandchildren, Ashley Renee Parker, Whitney Kayla Frye, Christopher Dean Parker, Bradley Dalton Frye and Dustin Perry Frye.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Clifton McCoy.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 16 in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Revs. Andrew Van Allen, Bobby Driggers and Gerald Starnes officiated the service.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Christian Tabernacle Church, 3018 U.S. 15 South, Sumter, SC 29150.

Adam Harvin

Adam Harvin, 75, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Mariner Health of Sumter–East.

Born Sept. 19, 1928, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Proctor and Annie Leonard Harvin. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. Mr. Harvin served in the U.S. Army, where he received an honorable discharge after years of service. Upon his returning to Sumter, he joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where he attended faithfully until his health failed.

Survivors include two adopted sisters, Emma (Solomon) Page and Annie (Richard) Archer, both of New York City; a devoted and loving cousin and her husband who were his custodians and took care of him like parents until his death, Mrs. Rebecca and Deacon Robert Burgess, who loved him like a son; two nieces, Denise and Joann Page of New York City; five grand-nieces and -nephews of New York City; special cousins, Paulette Mack, Sandra Burgess-Tindal and Chanel, Olivia Burgess and Alexis, Tony (Diane) Burgess and Tre’Kwan of Sumter, Deborah (James) Allen of Yokota, Japan; and many other cousins, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one adopted brother, Willie Leonard.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Marion Newton officiated the service, assisted by Pastor Ricky S. Simmons.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Larry T. Morris

Larry Thomas Morris, 61, husband of Emily Segars Morris, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Beasley Morris and the late Mozell Baird Morris. He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and was retired from Plowden Construction Co.

Survivors, besides his wife of Sumter, include a son, Joel Segars Jr. of Hartsville; a daughter, Candy S. Richburg of Sumter; three brothers, Tracy Morris of Dalzell, Ray Morris of Turbeville and Wayne Morris of Lexington; three sisters, Miriam Morris of North Augusta, Lois Breizy of Myrtle Beach and Annette Barrett of Manning; three grandchildren, Kacey Segars, Ryan Segars and Thomas Richburg.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Alice Drive Baptist Church. Dr. Clay Smith and the Rev. Tommy Comer officiated the service.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alice Drive Baptist Church New Bus Fund, 1305 Loring Mill Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Thomas L. Pittman

Thomas Lee Pittman, 79, husband of Mary Schroder Pittman, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at his home in Summerton.

Born June 9, 1924, in Nashville, Ga., he was the son of the late Perry and Annie Jewel Fountain Pittman. He was a retired real estate broker and a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served in Iwo Jima. He was a Mason and Shriner and life member of Sertoma International in Titusville, Fla., and was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer.

Survivors, besides his wife of Summerton, include a daughter, Marianne (Joe) Shaw of McClellanville; a son, Tommy Stewart Pittman of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, John Wesley Pittman of Emmett, Idaho; half-sister, Glenda Faye Morgan of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepsister; two stepbrothers; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003 at Lake Marion Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Kennedy officiated the service.

Bertha H. Strickland

DARLINGTON – Mrs. Bertha Hinson Strickland, widow of Carl Julian Strickland, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003 at Bethea Baptist Retirement Home in Darlington.

Born in Kershaw County, she was the daughter of the late Edward G. and Rhett Ross Hinson. She retired as sewing room supervisor from the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home after 21 years of service and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Darlington.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (Lem) Wooten of Elgin; sons, Ray (Madge) of Manning, Afon (Van) of Blythewood and Tim (Jeanie) of Denver, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sister, Leila Mae Ross of Elgin and brother, Herbert Martin of Topeka, Kan.

She was predeceased by a son, Carroll Beecher Strickland; sisters, Marie Martin, Aida Keith and Edna McQueen; and brothers, Ernest M. Hinson, Clinton Hinson, Buck (Ed) Hinson and David Roberts.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003 at Blaney Baptist Church in Elgin. Burial followed in Crescent Hill Memorial Garden, Columbia. Dr. E.C. Watson and the Rev. Terry Strickland officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648, or to Bethea Retirement Center, P.O. Drawer 4000, Florence, SC 29532.

Mary Witherspoon

Mary Lynn Keels Witherspoon, died on Nov 14, 2003, at her home in Charleston.

Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of Eleanor Martin Keels Malion of Summerton and the late Gamewell B. Keels. She was a graduate of Winthrop University and received her master’s degree from the College of Charleston. She was a schoolteacher at Charleston Academy and a member of The French Huguenot Church. Mary Lynn was a volunteer at MUSC Children’s Hospital, an active supporter of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and member of the Jr. League of Charleston.

Survivors, beside her mother, include one daughter, Jane W. Whelchel of Rock Hill; three sisters, Jacquelyn K. Olsen of Sumter, Kay K. Falk of Atlanta, and Jenny K. Loftis of Williamston.

Services were held on Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in The French Huguenot Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Camp Happy Days and Special Times, 1622 Ashley Hall Road, Charleston, S.C. 29407.

J. Henry Stuhr, Downtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Eva R. Burke

Eva Ruth Stubblefield Burke, 76, widow of Carless M. Burke Jr., died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at her home.

Born Nov. 27, 1926, in Oil City, La., she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Ruby Martin Stubblefield. She was a retired seamstress for Levi-Strauss and was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church. She was lovingly cared for by Chris and Kathy Jennings, Kevin and Donna Hogg, and Eva Sealey.

Survivors include two daughters, Glenda K. Burke of Mt. Pleasant and Cynthia Ann Warren of North Charleston; a son, Wayne Milford Burke of Clearwater, Fla.; two brothers, Troy Stubblefield of Oil City, La., and Charles Edward Stubblefield of Broken Arrow, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Lynn Burke.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Larry Kennedy officiated the service. Burial followed in Carolina Memorial Park in Charleston.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
