Harry Johnson

Harry Johnson, 82, husband of Flossie Evans Johnson, died Sept. 29, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born June 11, 1921, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Emma Johnson. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed by Sumter Concrete Co. for many years and retired as a machine operator from Exide Battery.

Survivors include one son, David Johnson of Sumter; one daughter, Dorothy O’Neal of Sumter; four brothers, Abraham Johnson of Fayetteville, Alex Johnson of Sumter, and Henry and Wesley Johnson, of New York; two sisters, Henriette Wilson and Carrie McFadden of Sumter; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Leila Montgomery and Louizer McFadden; and five brothers, Moses, Jasper, Harvey, William and R.M. Johnson.

Funeral services were held on Fri., Oct. 3rd at the Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Ministers Irene Anthony and Shirley Palmer, and Pastor Ricky S. Simmons. Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

LueBertha Oliver

LueBertha “Tody” Oliver, 82, widow of Henry Oliver, died Sun., Sept. 28, 2003, at Mariner Health of Sumter-East.

Born Jan. 2, 1912, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Janie Akins and Burgess Frierson, and the stepdaughter of Victoria Frierson. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church where she served as mother of the church for a year. She worked in many capacities of the church and was an avid missionary worker.

Survivors include five sons, Harry (Betty) Oliver of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., Willie Oliver of Cambria Heights, N.Y., James Oliver of Manhattan, N.Y., Retired Master Gunnery Sgt. USMC Raymond (Cynthia) Oliver of Okatie and Retired Master Sgt. USA Toney (Barbara) Oliver of Clarksville, Tenn.; five daughters, Elizabeth Oliver, Deloris (Ernest) Deleston and Ruby Oliver, of Bronx, N.Y., Beverly Simon of Sumter and Sandra (Clifford) Clarke of Ramstein, Germany; one brother, Charles Frierson of Manhattan, N.Y.; stepmother, Victoria Frierson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two stepbrothers, Benjamin Oliver of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Joe Oliver of Manhattan, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; two grandsons she reared, Dante’ and Brandon; seven great-grandchildren; a special friend, Wilbur Montgomery of Sumter; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Willie Burgess, Arthur, Jerry and Johnnie Frierson; and a sister, Hattie Bell Clayton.

Services were held on Sat., Oct. 4th at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Pastor Ricky S. Simmons, Ministers Irene Anthony and Velda L. Rucker. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Willie E. Reed

Willie Edward “Sunny” Reed, 46, of 2197 Mallett Road, Sugar Hill community, husband of Elaine Stinney Reed, died Sept. 30, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born July 3, 1957, in Manning, he was the son of Edith Richburg Reed and the late Robert Reed. He received his formal education in Clarendon County and was a 1975 graduate of Manning High School and received his associate degree in air conditioning/refrigeration from Sumter Area Technical College, Sumter. In his youth, he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church and served on the youth choir and was a member of the trustee board and musician of the church.

Survivors besides his wife, Elaine Reed of the home, include one son, Willie Jermaine Reed of the home; mother, Edith R. Reed of Manning; one daughter, Andriann Yolanda Reed of the home; seven sisters, Tomascena Howard, Shirley (William C.) Taylor, Mary (Washington) Dingle and Janice R. Coney, of Manning, Bertha Reed of Queens, N.Y., Bobbie (Winston) Beharrie of Dumfries, Va., and Sandra (Anthony) Liddell of Stafford, Va.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Reed Jr.

Funeral services were held on Sat., Oct. 4th at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Manning. The Rev. Gussie Caesar, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Presiding Elder Dr. B. Colclough, the Revs. Dr. Cokley Richburg, and Northern Miller, Evangelist Elizabeth Richburg and Minister Effie Hilton. Burial followed in Providence AME Church Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Aaron Robinson

Aaron “Bug” Robinson, 75, died Tues., Sept. 30, 2003, at his residence, 1110 Session St., Summerton.

Born April 1, 1928, in the Summerton area of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Aaron Robinson and Eva Billups Robinson. In his youth, he attended Mt. Pleasant UME Church. He was retired from the Town of Summerton Water Department and currently employed by Piggly Wiggly of Summerton.

Survivors include one son, Jackie (Sally) Guess of Pinewood; three adopted nephews, Leon (Ruthie) Singleton of Long Island, N.Y., Marshall (Linda) Singleton of Brooklyn, N.Y., and John Singleton of Baltimore, Md.; three adopted nieces, Shirley (Alphonza) Ragin of Summerton, Faye Singleton and Eva (Preston) Stukes, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Sherry, Brandon and Jaclyn Guess; three nephews, Alphonza Singleton, Kenneth Stukes and Shawn Singleton; three nieces, Tamika and Keisha Singleton and Glenda Stukes.

He was preceded in death by one nephew, Cyrus Singleton; and two nieces, Frances and Joyce Singleton.

Funeral services were held on Sun., Oct. 5 at Mt. Pleasant UME Church in the Panola Community of Pinewood. The Rev. James O. Robinson officiated the service. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Julia D. Tindal

Miss Julia Dicks Tindal, 60, of 105 Nelson Circle, died Mon., Sept. 29, 2003, at 1312 Pine St., Manning.

Born May 16, 1943, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Wallace and Mrs. Julia Dicks Tindal. She received her education through the Disability and Special Needs Board. She worked at the center in Manning. For the last five years, she enjoyed being in the midst of everything at work. Julia was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Manning. Attending Tommy Ellison’s concerts was always a high point in her life.

Survivors include four sisters, Lillie Mae Tindal Lane of Southfield, Mich., Ida T. Hunter and Rebecca Davis of Sumter and Marie Mickens of Paxville; three aunts, Roberta Dicks and Adell Dicks, of Sumter, and Mary Dicks of West End, N.C.; a special nephew, and the Rev. James C. (Shirley) Lane of Summerville.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, James Henry, Wallace, Levy and Derry Tindal; and two sisters, Minnie Ragins and Mary Wynn.

Services were held Sat., Oct. 4th at Macedonia Baptist Church in Manning. The Revs. Jonathan Mouzon, pastor, and James C. Lane. Burial followed in the Haynesworth Cemetery, Sumter.

Community Funeral Home in Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Willie Blanding

Willie Blanding, 52, died Oct. 5, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Feb. 23, 1951, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Pauline Lewis Huggins. Willie was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He worked various jobs.

Survivors include one sister, Eastover (Ezekiel) Wilson of Rosedale, N.Y.; three aunts, Mary Ellen Thames of Philadelphia, Pa., Pearl Lewis and a special aunt, Naomi Simmons, both of Manning; one uncle, George Lewis of Boston, Mass.; two nieces, Coretta (Bernard) Robinson-Demery of Manning and Starrlette Robinson of Rosedale, N.Y.; and four nephews, Sylvester (Kimberly) Robinson, Jonathon Wilson, Paul Wilson and Randy Wilson, all of Rosedale, N.Y.

Funeral services were held on Fri., Oct. 10 at St. John’s Baptist Church in the Silver community, with the Rev. C. Richburg, Evangelist Elizabeth Richburg and the Rev. Jonathan Anderson officiating. Burial was in St. John’s Baptist Church Cemetery.

Blackwell and Jenkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Carmiller Robinson Brown

Carmiller “Sing” Robinson Brown, 90, wife to the late Ivan Brown, died Wed., Oct. 8, 2003, at her residence.

Born Dec. 8, 1912, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mose Robinson Sr. and Caroline Stukes Robinson.

She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church. After moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., she joined First AME Zion Church where she served in various organizations. She later relocated back to South Carolina and re-joined Liberty Hill AME Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Ernest (Dorothy) Robinson of Summerton and Joseph (Gloria) Robinson of Capital Heights, Maryland.; additional relatives Deloris Moore of the home, Phyllis Jones of Stockdale, California, Aaron (Catherine) Jones of Summerton, and a god sister, Norine Brown of Summerton.

Services were held at Liberty Hill AME Church on Mon, Oct. 13, with the Rev. Malachi Duncan, Pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Nell R. King

BRONX, N.Y. – Nell Robinson King, 64, died Sept. 30, 2003, at Westchester Square Medical Center, Bronx, N.Y.

Born Jan. 22, 1939, in the Foreston community of Manning, she was a daughter of Joe Lee Robinson Sr. and Joella Snider Robinson. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Light Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Eldridge King Jr. of Bronx, N.Y.; one daughter, Angela McNair of Bronx, N.Y.; three brothers, Arthur (Stella) Robinson and Minister Harry (Pearliann) Robinson, both of Manning, and Rickie Robinson of Santee; six sisters, Estell (Fred) Pompey of Lancaster, Pa., Vernell (Louis) Pompey, Bettie (Louis) Hilton, Jackqulynn (Emanuel) Pompey, all of Manning, Francenia (Sammie) Woods of Greeleyville and Viree Abraham of Florence; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Lee Robinson Jr. and Harold Robinson.

Funeral services were held on Wed., Oct. 8 at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Fred Snider assisting Evangelist Ernestine Fleming and Evangelist Houston. Burial was in Junky Yard Cemetery.

Maudistine Lewis

Maudistine “Molly” Lewis, 48, died Sat., Oct. 4, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial, as the result of an automobile accident.

Born May 10, 1955, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Webb Lewis Sr. and Corine “Dolly” Lindsay Lewis. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she attended Laurel Hill AME Church. Later she moved to Florida where she joined Glendale Baptist Church. She returned to South Carolina and joined The Ark of God Church in Summerton. She was formerly employed by Federal Mogul Corp. of Summerton.

Survivors include a devoted friend, Sylvester Levy of Summerton; three sons, Tony D’Angelo Clark, Richard C. Lewis and Malcolm Lewis, all of the home; one daughter, Tiffeny Jacobs of the home; two brothers, Webb (Linda) Lewis Jr. and Kennith Lewis, both of Davis Station; six sisters, Lillie Mell (Willie) Aiken of Santee, Barbara Hall and Rival Walker, both of Davis Station, Cherrie Bowman, Beverly Lewis and Mary Kathy (Elvis) Shaw, all of Manning; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mamie Banks and Ethel Mae McKinzey.

Funeral services were held Fri., Oct. 10 at St. Mark AME Church, with the Rev. Ernest Brown, pastor, and Bishop John H. Griffin, assisted by Pastor Raymon Holliday and Minister Smith, officiating.

Burial was in Hopkin Cemetery, Davis Station community.

Esther H. Pearson

Esther Louise Holliday Pearson, 64, of 1193 Wausau St., Summerton, died Tues., Oct. 7, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare System, Sumter.

Born Oct. 19, 1939, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Eli Holliday and Ella Lawson Holliday Ragin and stepdaughter of the late Allen Ragin. She was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. She joined Taw Caw Baptist Church in her youth and became a member of Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Lorenzo Pearson of Orangeburg; three daughters, Mary P. Conyers of Summerton, Valarie (Sam) Champion of Savannah, Ga., and Andrea (Russell) Blackwell of Manning; two brothers, Robert Holliday of Miami, Fla., and Daniel Lawson of St. Stephens; two sisters, Shirlean Pearson of Baltimore, Md., and Nora Lee Ragin of Summerton; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Sat., Oct. 11, at Gum Spring Missionary Church, with Pastor Ollie J. Hannah, assisting Evangelist Evelynn Dukes. Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.
