Marguerite V. Sauner

Marguerite “Toot” Vinsryg Sauner, 84, wife of Joseph Charles Sauner, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in Covenant Place in Sumter.

Born Sept. 4, 1919, in Jamestown, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Peter M. and Mary Shaver Vinsryg. She was retired assistant cook at a local college and was active in the Cassadaga American Legion in Cassadaga, N.Y.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; a daughter, Paula Jo Pearl of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Dennis Sauner of Manning; a sister, Betty Miller of Cassadaga, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life was held on Tues., Oct. 14, at the Cassadaga American Legion in Cassadaga, N.Y. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Stockton, N.Y.

Memorials may be made to the Cassadaga American Legion, 228 Maple Ave., Cassadaga, NY 14718.

Jordan Funeral Home in Sinclairville, N.Y., was in charge of arrangements.

Stephens Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of local arrangements.

Narcissus Walker Spry

Narcissus Walker Spry, 70, wife of the late Richard Allen Spry, died Friday, October 10, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital, Columbia.

Born March 26, 1933, she was a daughter of the Mr. Cohen Walker and Mrs. Edelle Miller Walker.

Educated in the Clarendon County public school system and Florence-Darlington Technical College, she was an ardent member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church and was employed for 35 years with Wateree Community Actions, Inc. Head Start.

Survivors include a son, Darreyl (Margaret) Walker of Manning; a daughter, Jan (Ed) Golden of Columbia; three brothers, Claudius (Yvonne) Walker of Mitchellville, Md., Jerome (Fern) Walker of Winston Salem, N.C., and Edwin Walker of Charleston; three sisters, Mary Ida Stephens of Atlanta, Persephone (Isadoe) Powell of Severn, Md., and Ruth Neal of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law William Walker.

The deceased was preceded in death by three brothers, Milton Walker, Alton Walker and Cohen Walker Jr.

Funeral services were held Mon., Oct. 13, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. George P. Windley Sr., Pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Lucy F. Watson

Lucy Francis Johnson Watson, a daughter of the late Frank Johnson and Annie Jones Johnson, was born March 13, 1910, in the Panola section of Clarendon County.

A brother, Jack Johnson, and a sister, Rose Stinney, preceded her in death as well as a grandson, William Watson Jr.

She died Oct. 5, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she accepted Christ, was baptized and became a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant RMUE Church, serving faithfully on the usher board, missionary board and steward board. Lucy was joined in holy matrimony to the late Canty Watson Sr. and this union was blessed with six children.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory six loving and devoted children, Tommie Lee Watson of New York, N.Y., Canty “Rainy” Watson Jr. of White Plains, N.Y., William Watson of Washington, D.C., Dawson Watson of Summerton, Sara Mae Watson of Queens, N.Y., and Chad Watson of Bronx, N.Y.; one sister, Harriett Felder of Wilmington, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sat., Oct. 11, at Mt. Pleasant RMUE Church, in the Panola community, Pinewood, with the Rev. Powell Hampton Jr., pastor, assisting the Revs. Roosevelt Boyd, Simon P. Bouie, Malachi Duncan and Ernest Brunson.

Burial was in Brown Cemetery, Panola community, Pinewood.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

H. Woodrow Childers

Henry Woodrow Childers, 67, died Wed., Oct. 15, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 4, 1936, in Manning, he was the son of the late Gamble and Emily Tucker Childers. He was retired from the salvage business and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan C. Hathcock of Manning and Lisa Powell of Georgetown; and a sister, Orabel Jeffcoat of Gaston.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Woodrow Childers Jr. and Bobby Dean Childers; and a sister, Marie Cutter.

Funeral services were held on Fri., Oct. 17 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. C.S. Salter officiated the service. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry J. Foxworth

LAKE CITY – Mr. Henry J. “Tom” Foxworth, 76, died Mon., Oct. 13, 2003, at his daughter’s home after an illness.

Born in Williamsburg County, Mr. Foxworth was the son of the late Henry J. and Aline Cook Foxworth. He was a truck driver for Gowdy Grain Company and a member of Lake City Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Wellington Foxworth of Lake City; four daughters, Vivian (M.C.) Welch of Turbeville, Gloria (Ricky) Harris of Kingstree, Miriam (Albert) Owens of Lake City and Kathy (Wayne) Powell of Pamplico; two sons, Preston (Lucy) Foxworth of Batesburg and Terry (Cindy) Foxworth of Scranton; a brother, Roland Foxworth of Lake City; a sister, Rita Foxworth of Turbeville; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley Foxworth and Bobby Foxworth.

Funeral services were held on Wed., Oct. 15 at Lake City Church of God. Burial followed in the Lake City Memorial Park.

Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of arrangements.

Josephine DuRant

COLUMBIA – Josephine Rolene Smith DuRant, of Columbia, wife of Hazel DuRant Sr., died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at Palmetto Health Baptist, Columbia.

Born Nov. 22, 1946, in Cheraw, she was a daughter of Margaret Coachman Smith and the late James E. Smith. She received her education in the public schools of Cheraw and graduated from Long High School. She was a graduate of N.C. A&T University and received a master’s degree from Stout State University, Milwaukee, Wis. She was employed by the Department of Social Services and retired after 24 years of service. She was a member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, serving on the senior choir and missionary society.

Survivors besides her husband, Hazel DuRant Sr. of Manning, and her mother, Margaret C. Smith of Conyers, Ga., include one son, Hazel DuRant Jr. of Columbia; two daughters, Mia (Kareem) Briggs and Ashlei M. DuRant, both of Columbia; three sisters, Joyce S. Collins of Camden, Margaret L. (Richard) Olds of Conyers, and Sylvia S. (Barney) Edwards of Jonesboro, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 14, 2006, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, U.S. 15, Society Hill.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Celestine G. Dow

MANHATTAN, N.Y. – On Sunday, April 9, 2006, Celestine Geneva Dow, entered into eternal rest at her home in Manhattan. She was a daughter of Mary Blanding Dow and the late George W. Dow Sr., born May 19, 1951, in Clarendon County.

She attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Manchester High School. At an early age, she joined Antioch RMUE Church. After moving to New York, she continued her Christian fellowship with St. Luke AME Church. Celestine was a dedicated worker for JP Morgan Chase Co. where she recently celebrated her twentieth year.

Surviving are her mother, Mary Ann Dow of Rimini; her companion, Thomas Junious of New York, N.Y.; four brothers, Leroy (Earline) Dow, Leonard Dow, George (Margaret) Dow Jr. and Julius Dow, all of New York; six sisters, Rovener (Leroy) Adams, Patricia (Alfonza) Canty, Edith Mae Dow, Marie Adline, all of New York, Martha (Roger) Williams of Lithonia, Ga., and Irma (Daniel) McConico, of Rimini.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters, Boston Dow, Mary Ella Dow and Linda Joyce Dow.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini with Elder Joseph Powell, pastor, assisting the Rev. Duwine Sinkler, the Rev. Amos Hatcher, the Rev. Warren Hatcher, the Rev. William Polite Jr. and Minister Earnest Green.

Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Joyce Williams Goodley

Joyce Amiko Williams Goodley, 49, died April 7, 2006, at her home in Columbia.

Born on June 13, 1956, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Moses Williams Sr. and Emma Blanding Williams. She was also the wife of Melvin Goodley. Joyce valued her relationship with Christ, family and friends. At an early age, Joyce accepted Christ and was a member of High Hills Baptist Church, where she served on the choir and usher board. In 2003, she joined Unity Missionary Baptist Church, Hopkins, where she served faithfully until her illness.

Joyce attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1975 graduate of Hillcrest High School. She received her associate’s degree from Midlands Technical College. She was employed at the Sumter County Probate Court as a clerk for nine years, and later with the South Carolina Correctional Institution, until her illness prevented her from working.

Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Melvin Goodley of the home; one stepdaughter, Felicite (Johnny) Gladden of Summerton; five grandchildren, Jasmine, Dasuma, Josie and Chakiri Walker and Khalia Bracey; one sister, Patricia Williams of Suitland, Md.; four brothers, Moses Williams Jr. of Forestville, Md., Stanley (Virginia) Williams of St. Louis, Mo., Maverick (Norma) Williams of Dalzell and Jimmy (Norma) Williams of the Philippines; six sisters-in-law, Geraldine Durant Williams of Rembert, Eetha Goodley, Mary Goodley, Suie Swinton of Sumter, Virginia Havin of Bronx, N.Y., and Katie (Charles) Holmes of Augusta, Ga.; two brothers-in-law, Willie (Marie) Goodley and Freddie (Jeanette) Goodley of Sumter; seven aunts; four uncles; two grandaunts, Ellen Richardson of Rembert and Hattie Williams of Horatio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Norman Williams Sr.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at the Unity Missionary Baptist Church, Hopkins, with the Rev. Marion Walters, associate pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Ellie W. Palmer, Evangelist Norma Jean Mickens, the Rev. Toney Anderson, Minister Sarah Jackson, Evangelist Luvenia (Honey) Taylor, the Rev. Ruth Robinson Wiley, the Rev. Stanley Williams, the Rev. Conrad Davis and Evangelist Mary Katio.

Pallbearers were the Hillcrest Class of 1975.

Floral bearers were the Hillcrest Class of 1975.

Burial was in the High Hills Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Dalzell.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Kendal King

Kendal “Maxie” King, 78, died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Eugene D. King and the late Gertrude Tindal Lowder King. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a retired civil service accountant at Shaw Air Force Base after 29 years of service. He was an avid South Carolina sportsman.

Survivors include four beloved daughters, Carol Jeanette Mindlin of Texas, Vicki Marie King of Charleston, Cynthia Van Pelt of Washington, and Betsy Scott of Alaska; a beloved sister, Gloria (H.C.) Ford of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Tara Jane Havard, William M. Coulliette, Carl R. Coulliette, John Anthony Scott, S.R.A., Daniel Cook, Elizabeth Scott, and Catherine Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 17, 2006, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ron Bower and the Rev. Billy Lewis officiating.|

Burial was in the St. Paul Cemetery near Summerton.

Pallbearers were Wayne King, Carl Ford, Chris Ford, Chase Goins, Tony Johnson and Franz Johnson.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 Broad St., Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to the First Church of God, 1835 U.S. 521 North, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
