Roy. J. Carpenter

Sumter - Roy Joseph Carpenter, 71, husband of Irma Medlin Carpenter, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born in Burlington, Vt., he was the son of the late Joseph Roy Carpenter and Mary Greenough Carpenter. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War and later retired as a route salesman from Textilease of Sumter in 1992.

Survivors besides his wife include three daughters, Carol Shirah and her husband Sammy of Sumter, Brenda Foley of Yuba City, Calif., and Tami Blascak and her husband Mark of Manning; one stepdaughter, Amy Haselden of Sumter; two stepsons, Kim Haselden and Tony Haselden of Lexington; one brother, Adelbert Carpenter of Florida and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald Carpenter, and one sister, Ruth Lavery.

Services were held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George W. Quick officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The National Kidney Foundation, 5000 Thurman Mall Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Ruth M. Cantey

Ruth Mack Cantey, 79, widow of Robert Cantey, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born April 10, 1924, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Willis Mack and Annie Mae Cooper Mack. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She and her husband were prosperous farmers. She was a devoted member of Society Hill AME Church, where she served as church school (treasurer), class leader, stewardess, missionary, former church clerk and in the senior choir. She was active in the community affairs and was affiliated with numerous community and civic organizations, including the YMCA and YWCA-District No. 1 (secretary), Manning branch of NAACP (executive board), Jordan Precinct (precinct worker), the Clarendon County Voters League and the Clarendon County Democratic Party. She was a recipient of many awards, humanitarian services by the Manning District Lay Organization of the AME church and by the Manning Branch of the NAACP for largest number of memberships annually from 1994 to 1999.

Survivors include three sons, Julious Cantey and Johnny Cantey (Beatrice), of Buffalo, N.Y., and Jeremiah Cantey (Reoea) of Manning; three daughters, Helen Thompson (Leroy) and Susie Snider (Levi) of Manning and Celestine Smalls of Sumter; two brothers, David Mack (Mary Lee) and Emanuel Mach (Ethe Carol) of Buffalo; two sisters, Cincy Waiters of Buffalo and Naomi Frazier (Albertis) of Manning; three brothers-in-law, Marion (Earnestine) Cantey of Newark, N.J., James (Jerlene) Cantey of Manning and the Rev. Joe (Louise) Cantey Jr. of Irvington, N.J.; four sisters-in-law, Lucille Space and Hattie (Charles) Johnson of Manning, evangelist Shirley (Van) Williams of Irvington and Elease (Rev. George) Wilson of Dansville, Va.; a devoted caregiver, Angela Hilton; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three siblings, Ethel Conyers, Corrine Johnson and Oree Edwards; and a granddaughter, Ruth Lachael Thompson.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Society Hill AME Church with the Revs. Leon A. Terry, Larry E. Barns, Leroy Green, Jonathan Mouzon, Sam Miller and O’Donald Dingle, Elder Joe Cantey Jr., and Minister Shirley Waiters officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery family plot.

Dayle T. Goodman

Dayle T. Goodman, 57, died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 17, 1958, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Eva Bell Goodman. He received his formal education at Walker Gamble High School. In his youth, he joined Asbury United Methodist Church.

Survivors are two sisters, Gaile Goodman of Turbeville and Lottie Quattlebaum of Sumter; a brother, Freddie (Alberta) Goodman of Lake City; and two aunts, Mary English and Mable (Ben) English, both of Lynchburg.

A brother, Elister Lee Sr., preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Samuel Cooper, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the Goodman Cemetery, Lynchburg.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

James I. Harvin Jr.

James Israel Harvin Jr., 70, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born March 10, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James Israel Harvin Sr. and Evelyn Lydia Doughty Harvin. James was a graduate of Harren High School in New York City and majored in airplane mechanics. He trained in aircraft mechanics at Teterboro School of Aeronautics and retired from American Airlines, where he worked as an airplane jet engine mechanic. He was a member of MW King Solomon Grand Lodge, Thessalonia Lodge No. 68 in New York. “Jr.,” as he was affectionately called, was an active member of Elisabeth Baptist Church in Manning.

Those left to cherish his memory and grow from his love are a son, Levi Harvin of Laurel, Md.; two stepdaughters, Addriane Harris and Sidney Crawford of Charleston; a stepson, Nathaniel Crawford of Charleston; three sisters, Martha Harvin Horseford, Bernice Harvin Hayes and Evelyn L. Harvin; three brothers, Dennis A. Harvin, Thomas J. Harvin and Salem Harvin; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five uncles, Arthur Harvin of New York, N.Y., Willie Harvin of Trenton, N.J., Easley, Willliam and Moses Harvin, all of Sumter; seven aunts, Sadie, Shirley, Geneva, Arleatha, Odell, Betty Lue and Gardenia Harvin, all of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 25, 2008, at Elisabeth Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Alma Grace F. Landry

Alma Grace Fox Landry, 65, wife of Edward A. Landry Sr., died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Syracuse, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Bert Fox and the late Ernestine Peckham Fox. Mrs. Landry was a bus driver for the East Syracuse school system for 15 years.

Survivors include her husband of Manning; four children, Kelly Bitonio of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Christine Patneaude of Bradenton, Fla., Kathy Rose of York and Edward A. Landry Jr. of Kirkville, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, Lekel and Jack; and brothers and sisters, Beverly Theford, George Fox, Yvonne Crossman and William Fox.

Memorial services were held on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel in Sumter, with the Rev. Billy Lewis officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Rev. Isadore Lee

The Rev. Isadore “Sonny” Lee, 75, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, after an illness.

Born in Dillon County, he was a son of the late Robert Edward Lee Jr. and Mary Louise Johnson Lee. The Rev. Lee was a retired Baptist minister, having served at Union Baptist Church in Marion and First Baptist Church in Turbeville, of which he was a member. He received a diploma of pastoral ministries from Southeastern Seminary and was a member of Turbeville Ministerial Association. He was awarded pastor emeritus on June 30, 2001, and received the Smyrna Award from Turbeville First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Lions Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann White Lee, and two brothers, Vondell Lee and R.M. Lee.

Surviving are a daughter, Wendy L. (Kenny) Yates of Turbeville; a son, Jeffrey D. Lee of Florence; two sisters, Jean Lee of Latta and Mildred Johnson of Dillon; and three grandchildren, Carson Elizabeth Lee, David Michael Lee and Kenneth Coleman Yates.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Turbeville First Baptist Church.

Interment was at Magnolia Cemetery in Latta.

Memorials may be made to Turbeville First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 177, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

The Lee family would like to give special thanks to Winyah Hospice (Adaire, Karen, Rebecca and Tracie), and to Dr. Kate Smith and Dr. Dorn Smith for their many years of loving care.

Lester James McFadden

COLUMBIA – Lester James McFadden, 43, husband of Jodie Demarr McFadden, died Monday, April 21, 2008, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

Born July 4, 1964, in Manning, he was a son of Mattie Leola Brown McFadden and the late Robert David McFadden Jr. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a 1982 graduate of East Clarendon High School, Turbeville. At an early age, he joined Howard Chapel AME Church. He attended Sunday school and sang in the choir. He was employed by the city of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Santee Print Works of Sumter for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Jodie D. McFadden of New Zion; three daughters, Ashley and Kiara McFadden of New Zion and Jada McFadden of Fort Lauderdale; two stepchildren, Kimberly Kastrow of Washington, D.C., and Jamie Kastrow of Orlando, Fla.; his mother, Mattie McFadden; four sisters, Leola (Eugene) Kennedy and Cynthia Ceasar, both of New Zion, Mary L. (Donnie) Curtis and Barbara A. McFadden, both of Fort Lauderdale; and six brothers, Alvin Brown, Cleo (Doris) McFadden, Ronald McFadden and Johnny B. McFadden, all of New Zion, Horace (Johnnie) McFadden of Sumter and Willie (Joann) Player of Bennettsville.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Howard Chapel AME Church, New Zion, with the Rev. Alfred Bradley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Jerome McCray and Lucious Wheeler and the Rev. Dr. Johnnie McFadden.

Burial followed in the Old McFadden Cemetery, Turbeville.

Rhunette Ragin

Rhunette Wilson Henry Ragin died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County on Feb. 16, 1948, she was a daughter of the late Willie Lee Wilson and Lillie Mae Johnson Wilson. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville. She later joined Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, where she was an ardent worker and a member of several auxiliaries.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed with Becton Dickinson for 25 years and later J.C. Penney of Sumter.

Rhunette was married to James Henry Sr. until his death in 1976. She later married Harold Ragin.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, Harold Ragin of Sumter; son, James Henry Jr. of Sumter; three daughters, Marilyn Henry and Annette Henry, both of Sumter, and Debresia S. (Quincy) Jones of El Paso, Texas; a stepdaughter, Shaun M. Ragin of Sumter; a brother, Joe (Annette) Thompson of Sumter; four sisters, Annie Dell Jackson and Alice Stine (Eugene) Watson of Sumter, Willie Mae Pringle of Manning and Lillian Wilson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

A brother, Harry Wilson, and two sisters, Chinese Simon and Ernestine Boatwright, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, 2008, at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with Dr. Charles Young, interim pastor, officiating, Elder Malachi Duncan, eulogist; assisted by the Revs. Edythe DeLaine, David Pugh and Martha Richburg.

Burial was in the Historic Liberty Hill AME Church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home and Chapel of Manning was in charge of these arrangements.

Sandra E. Russell

Sandra E. Russell, 58, died Monday, April 21, 2008, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born February 25, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Robert F. and Marcia Saylor Russell. She was a credit processor for Bridgestone-Firestone Tire Company in Cleveland, for 28 years, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Avon Lake, Ohio.

Surviving are her stepmother, Elaine Marion Russell of Manning; two stepbrothers, Robert Edward Louth of Columbus, Ohio and James Paul Louth of Avon, Ohio; a stepsister, Diane Marion Vacey of Manning; special friends Tom and Mary Horne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private family graveside services were held on Saturday, April 26, 2008, in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning, with Pastor Robert Edward Louth officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

John S. Georgia Sr.
John S. Georgia Sr., 56, husband of Naomi Dallas Georgia, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 5, 1945, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late David “Shing” Georgia and Corine Dozier Georgia. He was a 1960 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as an usher and custodian until his health failed.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, John D. Georgia and Abraham Eric Georgia of Summerton; two daughters, Detrice Brown and her husband Desmond of Summerton and Michelle Smith of Baltimore; four brothers, Harry, James and Clarence Georgia of Summerton and Jeremiah Georgia of Baltimore; three sisters, Rosa, Sue and Mary Georgia of Summerton; and six grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. William T. Johnson and Naomi Georgia, pastor, officiated, assisted by Bishop Jeffery Johnson, the Rev. Albert Thomas and Johnnie Gilliam.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers and floral bearers were members of Scott’s Branch High School Class of 1968.

Joseph Lemon Jr.
1st Sgt. Joseph Lemon Jr., 50, husband of Nancy Peterson Lemon, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Palmetto Baptist Health Hospital.

Born July 15, 1951, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Joseph Lemon Sr. and Pauline Walker Lemon. He was a graduate of Manning Training School, Class of 1969, and earned an associate degree from Williamsburg Technical College. He joined the U.S. Army and later the S.C. National Guard, serving a total of 32 years and obtaining the rank of 1st Sergeant in the Manning National Guard, Battery “C” 4/178th Field Artillery. He was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church, where he served on the trustee board and steward board and was a senior usher and pastor steward. He was employed for 27 years at Federal Mogul.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Chris Lemon and O.J. Lemon; two daughters, Keisha Lemon and Candi Lemon of the home; three godchildren, Courtney Holiday, Brandon Holiday and Brandi Holiday of Manning; three brothers, Johnny Moses and his wife Sarah Lemon of Bronx, N.Y., Wilbert Lemon and his wife Ethel and Bill Lemon and his wife Katherine of Manning; and four sisters, the Rev. Rebecca Riley and her husband Leon of Baltimore, Annie Rodgers and her husband Bill of North Carolina, Helen Clark and her husband John Peter of Nutley, N.J., and Maggie Robertson and her husband Earl of Manning.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Lemon; and two sisters, Ida R. Doughty and Ernestine Nicholson.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion AME Church in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Summerton. The Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor, officiated, assisted by Elder Albert Thomas, the Revs. Jonathan Anderson, Herman Holland, Sampson Pearson and Rebecca Riley.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were S.C. Army National Guardsmen.

Honorary pallbearers were active and retired S.C. Army National Guardsmen.
