Ulysses R. Barber was born in 1913 in Hopkins. He is the grandson of Rev. Samuel Barber and Harriet Barber and the seventh of eleven children born to Rev. John Benjamin and Mamie Holley Barber.

“Professor Barber,” as he is affectionately called, developed an intense love for leaning at an early age. He was educated in the schools in the Hopkins area until he entered Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia. After graduation he attended Allen University where he excelled in sports and academics. It was here at Allen that he became a charter member of Alpha Phil Alpha fraternity. He received his Master’s Degree in Education from SC State College in 1958.

In 1939 Ulysses Barber received his Bachelor of Science degree from Allen, and he started his teaching career at Waverley School in Columbia that same year. The following year he returned to Hopkins after his father retired, and he replaced his father as teacher and principal of Hopkins School. He remained in this position until 1953 when the new Hopkins School campus was completed. Professor Barber, became the first principal of a fully accredited Negro school in the Lower Richland area.

In addition to his teaching and administrative duties, Professor Barber demonstrated his dedication to the youth of the community while coaching various sports teams, tutoring students after school, and working with 4-H clubs. He received a citation for being a 4-H Club leader for 35 years.

In August of 1941, he was united in holy matrimony to Ann Portee of Gadsden, with whom he shared many wonderful, blessed years. To this union, four lovely daughters were born. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a deeply caring family patriarch who instill in all a strong commitment to family, to heighten education and lofty goals, and to the church and community.

One year after his marriage in 1941, Ulysses Barber was ordained as a deacon at St. John Baptist Church. He has served as chairman of the Deacon Board since 1955. Superintendent of the Sunday School for forty years, and Chairman of the Executive Board for several decades as well. His strong religious devotion is demonstrated by his many years of loyal and dedicated service to the growth of St. John. He has also been an active member of the Wateree Baptist Association Upper Division for many years.

Deacon Barber has received numerous honors and awards from the community and from the field of education. The Richland County Education Association presented him with the Human Relation Award in 1972. In the same year he was honored for being Teacher of the Year for Gadsden School. He competed against winners from other schools in the district and won Teacher of the Year for Richland District One. In 1973 he was again selected Teacher of the Year. During that year he was named the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Teacher of the Year and nominee for the State Teacher of the Year. He also received the Outstanding Older American Award in 1990 and an award for his volunteer service from the Richland-Lexington Council on Aging. In his second 4-year term as president of the Hopkins City Council in 1995, Mr. Barber received the Hopkins Citizen for the Better Community Award. He has also served on the Advisory Board for the Council on Aging of the Midlands, Lower Richland Development Council, Hopkins Community Club, and Citizens for Hopkins Community Organization. He served as vice president of the Richland Community Club and Chairman of the Hopkins Senior Center Council. He served on the original board of Senior Catering, a corporation established by the Council on Aging to cater meals through the Meals on Wheels Program.

Until the age of 90, Deacon Ulysses Barber regularly attended Sunday School and church services and taught Bible studies for the Senior Center at Hopkins Park until his health began to fail. He also continued to be a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, and lifelong learner. He sincerely enjoyed doing good deeds for other people. In fact, he once said, “ I am indebted to the people in my community because they accepted my service.” Often referred to as a very wise man, Professor Barber has profound knowledge of the Bible and a strong belief in God. He was a father figure and role model for relatives and countless students with whom he worked all of whom were enamored by him.

Deacon Ulysses Barber leaves to cherish his loving memory, four daughters: Jean B. Grant of Jacksonville, Florida; Marie B. (James) Adams of Columbia, South Carolina; Mary B. (John) Kirkland of Hopkins, South Carolina; Carrie B. (James) White of Hopkins, South Carolina; two brothers: Odell Barber of Los Angeles, California and Johnny (Gladys) Barber of Detroit, Michigan; three grandchildren: Reverend John Ulysses (Stephanie) Kirkland of Charlotte, North Carolina; Kendrick (Tiffany) Adams of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Millicent K.
