Bruce G. Chaney
Bruce Gordon Chaney, 65, husband of Sandra June Adkinson Chaney, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 27, 1939, in Westboro, 
Ohio, he was a son of the late Arthur and Naomi Moon Chaney. He was a retired officer of the CIA and a U.S. Army veteran, and more recently became a writer for The Item newspaper. Upon retirement in the Wyboo community of Manning eight years ago, he developed a real appreciation and enjoyment of the lake area, with its many species of birds and wildlife.
He is survived by his wife of Manning; three sons, Eric (Diane)Chaney of Fall River, Mass., Colin (Cathy) Chaney of Fredericksburg, Va., and Tevin Chaney of Williamsburg, Va.; three brothers, Stanley Chaney of Ames, Iowa, Robert Chaney of Matthews, N.C., and Carey Chaney of Hagerstown, Md.; a sister, Ann Lowery of Peoria, Ariz.; and a grandson, Ian Chaney.
A celebration of life service was held on Sunday, May 1, 2005, in the Wyboo Community Center, and included a time to share memories for family and friends. Mr. Jeffrey Black officiated.

Canty L. Hodge
BISHOPVILLE – Canty Labon “Snuffy” Hodge, 79, widower of Florrie Ann Kinder Hodge, died Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Dorn VA Medical Center.
Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Canty Labon Hodge Sr. and the late Bessie Bartlette Hodge.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a son, William A. “Tony” (Sherry) Hodge of Bishopville; three granddaughters, Amorry H. (Jamey) Lisenby of Sumter, Dona S. (Fritz) Smith of Bishopville and Kathy S. (Jimmy) Cole of Sumter; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Smith, and a grandson, Anthony Hodge.
Funeral services were held on May 1, 2005, in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Glass officiating.
Burial was in the Ashwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cornie M. Johnson
Mr. Cornie Monroe Johnson, 85, departed this earthly life on Monday, April 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter, as he entered eternal rest with the Lord.
He was born March 27, 1919, in Horry County, to the late Mr. Monroe Johnson and Mrs. Ella Montague Johnson. Early in his life, Mr. Johnson attended area churches in Horry County and was educated at Cedar Creek School in Horry County. Mr. Johnson was twice married, first to the late Mattie Fullard and after her death, he met and married Mrs. Flossie Stokes Johnson.
Survivors include 19 children, Mrs. Mary Francis (Eddie) Ford, Mr. Ulysses (Casey) Ford, Mrs. Mattie J. Smith, all of Tampa, Fla., Mr. Booker T. (Anntte) Ford of West Virginia, Mr. Wayne Johnson of Sumter, Mrs. Dixie (Albert) Holton, Mr. Jimmy (Mammie) Ford, Mr. James Johnson, Mrs. Alice Faye (Jerry) Fennie, all of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Shirley (Clinton) Murry of Mullins, Mrs. Sylvia (Harmon) White, Mrs. Carlene Goodson, Mr. Connie (Clara) Johnson Jr., all of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Patricia (Derrick) Foxworth of Marion, Mrs. Carolyn (Elbert) Lewis of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. Flossie (Jasper) Brisbon of Tampa, Fla., Mr. Calvin (Diania) Johnson of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. Delores Johnson-Brown of Manning and Mr. Ricky Johnson of Philadelphia; one brother, Mr. Clemson Johnson of Baltimore; three sisters, Mrs. Elnethia Jarrett of Winston Salem, N.C., Lena Mae Floyd of Baltimore, and Mrs. Sallie (Marzel) Longs of Springfield, Ohio; 98 grandchildren; 154 great-grandchildren; 100 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two children, Douglas and Harrison Johnson; three brothers, Nealy Nance Johnson, Ivory Johnson and Cordie Johnson; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Wilson and Mrs. Flora Reeves.
Funeral service were held on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Faith Enterprise Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Elton Ford. Burial will follow in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Pinewood.

Elna Brabham Harvin
Goldsboro, N.C. – Mrs. Elna Brahham Harvin of Goldsboro, 100, died May 1, 2004 at her home in Goldsboro.
Mrs. Harvin was born on April 30, 1904 in Monetta, S. C., and was the daughter of the late Rev. Henry Clark Brabham and Helen Seaberg Brabham. Her father was the former pastor of the Manning Baptist Church (1926-1937). Mrs. Harvin was a graduate of Furman University and later taught at Manning High School. She was married to the former Glenn Beckham Harvin, and resided in Raleigh until moving to Goldsboro in 1987. She and her husband were members of Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh and her husband Glenn was employed by Carolina Power and Light Company in Raleigh until his retirement. Upon moving to Goldsboro, Mrs. Harvin joined the First Presbyterian Church of Goldsboro.
She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Helen Smith of Orangeburg, S.C.; two sons, Glenn B. “Jack” Harvin of Charlotte, and Allan B. Harvin, M.D. and his wife, Nancy of Goldsboro; four grandchildren, Leigh (Leon) Rosenberger of Ridgefield, Wash.; Slade (Tammy) Harvin of Wilmington, N.C., Glenn (Beth) Harvin, M.D. of Charleston, S.C. and Marie Harvin of Greensboro. She had one great-grandchild, Robert Glenn Rosenberger.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Henry C. Brabham of Gaffney, S.C.

Caro B. Cubbage
Caro Brunson Cubbage, 81, widow of James Cubbage Sr., died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born Sept. 9, 1922, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mood Brunson and Grover Harrison Brunson. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member of Goodwill United American Freewill Baptist Church in Manning. She attended Goodwill School.
Survivors include three sons, James Cubbage, Hayward (Pearlene) Cubbage and Tyrone Cubbage, all of Manning; two daughters, Anita Brunson and Carolyn (Albertus) Sweat, both of Manning; two sisters, Ethelea Watson of Manning and Dorothy Cain of Philadelphia; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, David Cubbage; one brother, Ingram Brunson; and one grandson, Micheal Cubbage.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Goodwill United American Freewill Baptist Church, Bloomville community of Manning, with Elder Shelly Hickson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Cokely Richburg, Bishop L.H. Burns and evangelist Elizabeth Richburg.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Carolyn Conyers
Carolyn “Cat” Gwendolyn Canty Conyers, 58, widow of Thomas “Topcat” Conyers Sr., died April 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 11, 1945, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Donald Canty Sr. and Millie Gadson Canty. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter. At an early age, she was baptized and became a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served on the usher ministry, hospitality committee, Calvarette Choir and as president of the mass choir. She was employed by Summerton Apparel for more than 20 years, Glen Manufacturing for a number of years and Tufco Textile Manufacturing as a seamstress until her health failed.
Survivors besides her parents include three daughters, Sheila (Spencer) Tindal and Gwendolyn Nelson (special friend, Leroy Dwyer), both of Sumter, and Thomasenia (George Phillip) Riley of Manning; one son, Thomas Conyers Jr. (fiancee, Monica Gardner) of Columbia; one adopted son, Antonio Duren of the home; one brother, Jerome (Joan) Canty of Pinewood; two sisters, Mary C. (Melvin Jr.) Wilder and Wilphene (Earvin Lee) Wilder, both of Pinewood; one half-sister, Irene (Willie) King of New York; three grandchildren, Ashley (Edwin) Ridera of Jacksonville, Fla., Devin Tindal and Donovan Tindal, both of Sumter; a mother-in-law, Rosa Williams of Philadelphia; one brother-in-law, Dewey (Yolanda) Williams; three sisters-in-law, Admiral Williams, Amelia Williams and Wilama Whack; four aunts; four uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara C. Gamble, and one brother, Donald “Pug” Canty Jr.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Calvary Baptist Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Roosevelt McFadden Jr., Mose Dingle Jr., John Johnson and Dr. D.L. Grant.
Burial was in Calvary Baptist Church cemetery.

Richard J. Bochette
ROCK HILL – Mr. Richard “Rick” James Bochette, 79, of Rock Hill, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.
Mr. Bochette was a native of Clarendon County and a son of the late Preston and Daisy Miller Bochette. He retired from Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Co. where he worked in the cotton dyeing department for more than 42 years. He also worked as a taxidermist. Mr. Bochette was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and a member of First Baptist Church. He was the widower of Beulah Cash Bochette.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda B. Workman of the home; two grandsons, James D. “Jimmy” Kirkland III of Rock Hill and Christopher Trey Workman of the home; two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Hunter Kirkland of Rock Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Monday, April 26, 2004, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel. The Rev. Steve Hogg officiated and Dr. Larry Sizemore assisted. Interment was in Grandview Memorial Park, S. Cherry Road.

Faith Reardon Barrineau
Faith Reardon Barrineau, 81, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at National Healthcare Center following an extended illness.
Born in Manning on Nov. 5, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Dwight L. Reardon and the late Edith Duke Reardon.
She was married to the late Glen Altman Barrineau Sr. on June 6, 1943. They were married for 50 years, having just celebrated their 50th anniversary a few months prior to his death in December 1993.
Mrs. Barrineau grew up in Manning and graduated from Manning High School. She was baptized at an early age and joined First Baptist Church, Manning. In 1955, she and Glen moved to Sumter where he accepted a position with Horne Motor Company. They joined Salem Avenue Baptist Church and later became charter members of Crosswell Baptist Church when it was formed. Mrs. Barrineau was active in all areas of the church and especially enjoyed being a member of the church choir. She also served as a Baptist volunteer at Tuomey Hospital for 20 years. At the time of her death, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Sumter. One of her most treasured memories was seeing her 90-year-old mother, Edith Reardon, and her 7-year-old grandson, Curtis Barrineau, baptized in the same service at Crosswell Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Yates Frady.
Survivors include a son, Glen Altman “Al” Barrineau Jr. and his wife, Harriett Pritchard Barrineau, of Sumter; four grandsons and their families, Curtis, Yvonne, Brooks and Kelsey Barrineau of Snellville, Ga.; Brent, Mendy, and McKenzie Barrineau, Matthew and Joshua Coker and Justin Ross of Lugoff, Brian and Jennifer Barrineau of Lexington and Chris, Laura, Blake and Faith Barrineau of Fountain Inn; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Curtis, Brent, Brian and Chris will always love and cherish the memories of GaGa Faye and the fried chicken and chocolate chip cookies she enjoyed fixing for them.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest Reardon, Perry Reardon and Norwood Reardon; and two sisters, Laneige Bradham and Margaret Mahoney.
Graveside services were held on Monday, May 3, 2004, in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. James Goodroe and the Rev. Don Hansen officiating.

Curtis Barfield
Curtis Barfield, 72, widower of Cora Hickman Barfield, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Richard “Dick” Barfield and the late Rose Bryant Barfield. He was a member of Smithville Evangelical Baptist Church and was retired from Campbell Soup Co.
Survivors include a son, Calvin Barfield of Sumter; five daughters, Evelyn Roqumore, Judy Battilana and Patty Lowery, all of Sumter, Lynn Evans of Alcolu and Eloise Miles of Kingstree; a brother, Arnette Barfield of Lake City; two sisters, Vera Welch of Turbeville and Flo King of Wyoming; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Thursday, April 29, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Freddie Gaymon and the Rev. Mike Baynai officiating.
Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery.

John R. Williams
ANDERSON – John Randolph Williams, 75, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Anderson Memorial Hospital in Anderson.
Born March 14, 1930, in Richmond, Va., he was a son of the late Wesley Williams and Sarah Witherspoon Williams. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed for many years with Armstrong Floor and Tile Corp. in Lancaster, Pa. He was also an entrepreneur for many years.
Survivors include a companion, Janie Reeves; two sons, Stephen Randolph Williams of Dumfries, Va., and John Anthony Williams of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Darlene Coulibaly and Gloria Williams, both of Laurel, Md.; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 30, 2005, in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Gussie Ceasar officiating.
Burial was in St. Matthews Cemetery, Hwy. S.C. 261, Manning.
