Bertie J. Strickland

Bertie Jean Barrett Strickland, 54, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born March 28, 1951, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late James D. Barrett Sr. and Lydia Alberta Stone Barrett. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Barrett of Manning and Glenn Strickland and wife, Teresa, of Alcolu; a daughter, Leslie Strickland and husband, Elston, of Alcolu; and three brothers, James Barrett Jr., Glenn Barrett and Johnny Barrett of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Charlie T. Simpson Jr.

Charlie Thomas “Buddy” Simpson Jr., 60, widower of Barbara Jeter Simpson, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 12, 1945, in Manning, he was a son of the late Charlie Thomas Simpson Sr. and the late Warrine McLeod Simpson. He was a power line mechanic for Mastec, and was a member of Cross Roads Bible Fellowship Church.

He is survived by seven daughters, Wendy Raley of Ocala, Fla., Vicki Russell of Orlando, Fla., Debra Green of Manning, Pam Cox, Wanda Brown, Tammy Grimsley and Jan Crawford of Sumter; a brother, Billy Simpson of Manning; four sisters, Carolyn Harrison of Charleston, Charlene Green of Manning, Betty Andrews of Alcolu and Joanne Parker of Richlands, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 3, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. John Hall officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Cross Roads Bible Fellowship Church.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Rosa B. Shropshire

Rosa Bell Shropshire, widow of the late Deacon James Shropshire, died Sunday, April 24, 2005, at her residence.

Born Oct. 10, 1908, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Warren and Rosa Billie Walters. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and served on the deaconess board until her health failed.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lee Shropshire, and two grandchildren reared in the home, Roderick and Destiny Shropshire; 86 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a special caretaker, Gloria Hodge.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Harry Lee Shropshire, James Jr. Shropshire and Wardell Shropshire; two grandsons, Vernell Jackson and Tory Shropshire; two brothers, Phillip Walters and Eugene Walters.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 29, 2005, at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 14 Brand St., with the Rev. L.W. Barnes, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Barbara Lash and the Rev. Stanley Hayes.

Burial followed in the Walker Cemetery.

Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Everett N. Scott

Everett N. Scott, Sr., 63, husband of Shirley Goff Scott, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005.

Born in Paxville, he was a son of the late Richard Manning Scott and the late Gladys Kolb Scott.

He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and also attended Sumter Baptist Temple. He was retired from Zeigler Construction Co.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Rhett Scott of Durham, N.C., and Mark D. Scott of Elkins, W.Va.; three sisters, Carrie Lee Ardis of Paxville, Gladys E. Burke of North Santee and Annette Ridgill of North Santee; six brothers, F.D. Scott and Leslie Scott, both of Charleston, Stanley Scott of Summerville, Wayne Scott of Georgia, Ronald Howard “Willie” Scott of Manning and Floyd Scott of Paxville; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 30, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Scott officiating.

Burial was in Pinewood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church Building Fund, 120 Pinewood Road, Sumter, S.C. 29154.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Cliff Richburg

MONCKS CORNER – Johnny Clifton “Cliff” Richburg Jr., 25, son of Johnny Clifton Richburg Sr. and the late Janice Ann Disher Richburg, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, in Berkeley County.

Born March 5, 1980, he was an electrician with W. R. Controls, and a member of Wilson Union United Methodist Church in Manning.

Surviving besides his father and stepmother, Deborah McCormick Richburg, of Moncks Corner are maternal grandmother, Margaret Disher of Kingstree; a son, Tanner Lawson Richburg of Sumter; a brother, Joshua Calhoun Richburg of Moncks Corner; a stepbrother, Jared Barwick of Moncks Corner; two stepsisters, Kayla Barwick and Kristen Barwick of Moncks Corner.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 1, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Mike Murdoch officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Roberta P. Ragin

Roberta Plowden Ragin, 66, widow of Daniel “Junior” Ragin Jr., died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 30, 1936, in the Red Hill community of Manning, she was the daughter of the late Johnny Plowden and Alice Cubbage Plowden. She attended Goodwill Parochial School, Manning Training School and graduated from Scott’s Branch High School Adult Class. She attended WSMB Tech College in Kingstree. She joined Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church at an early age and later became a member of the Church of Christ in Manning. She was employed at Clarendon County Head Start, Clarendon Memorial Hospital and DHEC and retired in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Harry Lee “Jackie” Ragin of Manning; two daughters, Linda R. Whigan and Cynthia Dannette R. Haynie of the home; five brothers, Charlie Plowden and Allen Plowden of Philadelphia, Elijah Plowden and Allen Haynesworth of Manning, George (Denise) Haynewsworth of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Mazerine Taylor and Della (Leroy) Holland of Suffolk, Va., and Annadell Montgomery of Jesup, Md.; an adopted mother, Jaunita Nelson of Davis Station; five grandchildren; and a loving and devoted friend, Emma Spry of the home.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie, Sam and Auddie Plowden; and a sister, Lucille Brunson.

Services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St. in Manning, with Brother Halbert Tucker officiating, assisted by the Revs. Shelley Hickson and Franklin McCants.

Burial followed in Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Goodwill Church Road in Manning.

Debbie V. Prince

Debbie Vernice Prince, 31, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in Sumter.

Born Aug. 7, 1971, in Manning, she was the daughter of Willie Albert and Beretta Gibbs Prince. She was a 1990 graduate of Manning High School and she was employed with Gold Kist in Sumter. She attended Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church and Grace Cathedral.

Survivors include six brothers, Frank Lawson and Steve Lawson of St. Paul, Slyvestar (Brenda) Gibbs, Issac Prince and Charles Prince of Manning, and Albert Lee Prince of Sumter; and two sisters, Loretta Washington of Orangeburg and Rosa Mae Prince of Manning.

Services were at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church in the Bloomville community with the Rev. C. Richburg, presiding, and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist, S.C. 260 in Manning.

Pallbearers were the Class of 1990.

Floral bearers were the co-workers from Gold Kist and the missionary society of the church.

John P. Pendergrass

Chester - John P. Pendergrass, 56, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, in the Chester County Hospital.

Born in Chester on May 22, 1946, he was the son of the late John Pendergrass and Cleo Thompson Pendergrass. A former employee of Shugart Manufacturing and Willamette Industries, Inc., he was a U.S. Marines veteran and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He attended Finley High School in Chester and York Technical College and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his sister, Celestine Martin of Manning; and his caregiver, Leola McCullough of Chester.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of King’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Stringfellow Jr. officiating.

Burial followed in Gethsemane Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary R. Mims

Mary Lydia Richbourg Mims, 82, wife of Daniel Julius Mims, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 20, 1920, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Matthew E. and Mary Lee Graham Richbourg. She was a retired inspector for Manning Manufacturing Company, and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors, besides her husband of Manning, are a daughter, Danette Briggs and her husband, Lyle K. of Dover, Del.; a brother, Cecil M. Richbourg of Columbia; a granddaughter, Paula Piccoli of Apex, N.C.; a grandson, Daniel R. Briggs of Wilmington, Del.; and a great-grandson, Matthew E. Piccoli.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating.

Burial followed in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Manning First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 610, Manning, S.C. 29102, the American Kidney Foundation, or to the Clarendon County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 414, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Ivy L. Milligan

Ivy Logan Milligan, 87, of the Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg, wife of the Rev. William P. Milligan, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, in Orangeburg Regional Medical Center.

Born April 29, 1916, in Laurelvale, Northern Ireland, she was the daughter of the late William and Nora Maginnis Logan. She and her husband served United Methodist Churches in Olar, Greenwood, Graniteville, Manning and Andrews. Prior to moving to Methodist Oaks, Rev. and Mrs. Milligan spent their retirement years in Manning, where she was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her loving husband of sixty-five years, the Rev. William Prestley (Billy) Milligan; two sons, William Lloyd Milligan of Isle of Palms and David Howard Milligan and wife, Laura Morris Milligan of Greenville; four grandchildren, Kerry Milligan Welti and her spouse, Erin Theodore Welti of Columbia, Michael David Milligan of Columbia, Erin Milligan Harmon and her spouse, Neil Sterling Harmon of Mount Pleasant and William Lloyd Milligan II of Isle of Palms; a brother, Kenneth Logan of Northern Ireland; and two sisters, Phyllis Baird and Dora Logan of Northern Ireland.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Phyllis Gwendolynne Milligan and a son, William Prestley Milligan Jr.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Manning United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jerry Watson and Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Charlie Gavin, Artie Felder, W.E. Horton Jr., Travis Brown Jr., Alfred Breedin Jr. and John M. Odom.

Honorary Pallbearers were Eddie and Shriley Barrett and John and Nita Denny.
