Ann M. Harris

Cayce - Ann M. Harris, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Mae Ardis and Jim Rhodus. She was a member of the Scatter Cheer Sunday School Class, Easley Sox Circle and Ladies Aid of Mt. Tabor. She retired from Walker Plumbing Company and was a participant in the S.C. Women in Plumbing Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Dufries and husband, Paul, of Cayce, and Marilyn L. Milam of Columbia; a brother, Ernest Rhodus of Lexington; six grandchildren, Kim Burgess of Beaufort, Deborah Crews, Ray E. Milam Jr., David Dufries, Todd Dufries and Jennifer Morgan of Columbia; 11 great-grandchildren, Savannah, Cooper, Ashly, Chase, Caleb, Mackenzie, Sarah, Logan, Zachary, Alexandria and Ethan.

She was preceded in death by infant twin sons, Wayne and Wade; and one granddaughter, Charlotte Ann Sammons of Atlanta, Ga.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, West Columbia with the Revs. Paul Aebischer and Ginny Aebischer officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 1000 B. Ave., West Columbia, S.C.

Eva L. Dyson

Eva Lee Dyson, 92, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Center.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late David Lawrence Dyson and the late Carrie Lee Dyson.

Survivors include a niece, Eloise Moore in Manning.

Services will be private.

Ranndall O. Davis

Ranndall Oren Davis, 39, husband of Virginia Moseley Davis, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 13, 1963, in Sumter, he was the son of Ronald Davis and the late Ann Dukes Davis. He was an auto mechanic at Longstreet Motors in Kingstree, and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Manning; father of Alcolu; two sons, Ranndall O. Davis Jr. and Bradley Eric Davis of Manning; two brothers, Ricky Davis of Tampa, Fla. and Robbie Davis of Bishopville; and maternal grandparents, Hartwell and Mary Duke of Manning.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Revs. Stephen Bowe and Jack Moore officiating.

Burial followed in the Paxville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210, or to the American Red Cross.

Harry S. Cochran Sr.

St. Matthews - Harry Singleton Cochran Sr., 95, widower of Isabelle McElveen Cochran, died Sunday, May 4, 2003, in Trident Medical Center in Charleston.

Born in Patrick County, Va., he was a retired farmer, member of St. Matthews Presbyterian Church and was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Survivors include a son, Harry Singleton Cochran Jr. of John’s Island, S.C.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the DuRant Cemetery in Gable with the Dr. Gordon Reed officiating.

Memorials may be sent to the Presbyterian Home of Summerville, 201 W. Ninth North St., Summerville, S.C. 29483.

Moultrie E. Witherspoon

Moultrie Edward Witherspoon, 75, widower of Viola Smiling Witherspoon, died April 27, 2004, in Columbia.

Born Dec. 21, 1928, in the Wilson community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Chappell Witherspoon Sr. and Rovenia Charles Witherspoon. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from Federal Mogul in Manning. He was a lifetime member of Biggers AME Church, where he served as pastor steward and class leader. He was also a member of the senior choir and the Sunday school.

Survivors include two sons, Sylvester (Annie) Samuel of Manning and Moultrie (Erica Robinson) Witherspoon Jr. of Columbia; six daughters, the Rev. Viola (Fred) Fuller, Carolyn (Reginald) Holloway, Glorus (Salvador Gamble) Witherspoon and Denise Coleman, all of Columbia, Mildred (Richard) Nick and Kwakiutl Witherspoon, both of Manning; one brother, Ivory (Almettia) Witherspoon of Manning; one sister, Rovenia W. Bennett of Manning; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Witherspoon and Chappell Witherspoon Jr.; and Susie Mae W. Bradshaw.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 30, 2004, at Biggers AME Church, with the Rev. Andrew Jordan, pastor, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Al Smiling and the Rev. Alfred Darby for the eulogy.

Burial was in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery, Sumter.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Belva Matthews

CHARLESTON – Mrs. Belva Matthews, age 73, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at a local hospital, after a long illness.

Mrs. Matthews was born Jan. 21, 1931, in Sumter, the daughter of the late Charlton L. Green and Sudie B. Green. She was a retired nurse and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Louis Lee Matthews of Charleston; son, Louis Lee Matthews Jr. of Valdosta, Ga.; daughter, Peggy Renee Williams of James Island; a granddaughter, Britton Lane Williams of James Island; brother, William H. Green of Sumter; sisters, Alberta Williams of Dalzell, Ida Richburg of Hampton and Cathy Cutter of Manning; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Live Oak Memorial Gardens in Charleston.

Memorials may be made to Driftwood Nursing Home, 2375 Baker Hospital Blvd., North Charleston, S.C. 29405.

J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, Charleston was in charge of arrangements.

Joanne E. Langston

Joanne E. Langston, 55, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born July 16, 1948, in Florence, she was a daughter of Lillie Bullard Langston and the late Joseph Sanford Langston of Manning.

Surviving, besides her mother, are a sister, Margaret Porter of Manning; two aunts, Bessie Pruitt of Bennettsville and Lib Isgett of Florence; two nephews; and a niece.

A funeral service will be held at a later date.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Missouri L. Vanzandt

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Missouri Elizabeth “Dot” Lee VanZandt, 59, wife of Charles E. VanZandt, formerly of Manning, died Monday, May 29, 2006, in St. Petersburg General Hospital.

Born July 28, 1946, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Louis Ellington Lee and Annie Evangeline Mitchum Lee Ridgeway. She was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving besides her husband of St. Petersburg are two daughters, Donna (Bobby) Hartfield of Sumter and Deborah (Mark) Birdsall of St. Petersburg; two sons, Donald Howard of St. Petersburg and Charles E. (April) VanZandt Jr.; three brothers, Jerry Lee and Curtis Lee of Sumter and Danny Lee of Manning; two sisters, Wanda Mitchum and Pat Hamilton of Manning; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Lee, and her son, Frank Howard Jr.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, June 3, 2006, in Oak Grove Cemetery with the Rev. John Matthews officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Williams Nettles Allen

Robert Williams Nettles “Bad Boy” Allen died on Monday, May 29, 2006, in Florence.

He was born in Washington, D.C., a son of Jerry L. and Emma Nettles Allen. He attended the public schools in Washington and Clarendon County. At the time of his demise, he was attending Denmark Technical College in Bamberg and employed with Honda of Timmonsville.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Roosevelt and Juanita Rush Nettles, Robert Allen, Sr. and Mary Jane Quick.
Survivors besides his parents are: sisters, Tammy Lorraine Allen and Robin Allen and her fiancé, Kris Frost; brothers, Jerry (Kianna) Allen, Fredrick Allen and Corey Allen; stepbrothers, Gregory Allen and Roderick Allen; nieces, Brenda McGee and Shardae Allen; nephews, Anton Brown, Quyon Lundy Allen and Jerry Lundy Allen; aunts, Rev. Nell Green, Deborah Nettles and Shirley (Thomas) Taylor; uncles, Michael (Mary Ann) Nettles, Darry (Sharon) Reid, Robert (Peggy) Allen, Morris (Besty) Quick and Alfred (Bernice) Quick; his companion, Xonia “Bubbles” McWhite; special cousin and friend, Jamie Nettles, special friend, Terrance Green; one grand uncle; 11 grand aunts; a host of cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 2, 2006 at Howard Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, Timmonsville.

Interment followed in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Ideal Funeral Parlor of Florence was in charge of the arrangements.

Evelyn Anderson

Evelyn Delores Hogan Anderson, 75, widow of Otis Anderson, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born May 10, 1931, in Chesterfield, she was a daughter of the late William J. Hogan III and the late Maxine Hatchell Hogan. She was a retired registered nurse in Aiken, and a member of True Way Holiness Church.

Surviving are a brother, William J. (Ila Mae) Hogan of Manning; a sister, Patsy Conner of Myrtle Beach; nieces and nephews.
Private services were planned for a later date.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Edith Canty

Edith Mary Emma Leneau “Tut” Canty, 79, entered eternal rest at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia, on Tuesday, May 30, 2006.

She was a daughter of the late Clarmont Leneau and Hattie Cantey Leneau, born Aug. 28, 1926, in Clarendon County. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she joined Union Station AME Church in Sumter, where she worked faithfully on the missionary board, women ministry, pastor aide committee and stewardess board number two. She was employed for more than 30 years with Neal Brothers Inc.

Survivors are one son, Charles Canty of Sumter; two daughters, Robert C. (Woodrow Jr.) Hastie of Sumter and Sandra C. (Fredrick) Murphy of Columbia; one sister, Pamela Gibson of Sumter; four grandchildren, Sherman Hastie of Sumter, Ashlee Murphy and Sarah Murphy, both of Columbia, and Shanna Hastie of Riverdale, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Ava Hastie of Columbia and Trinity Cornell of Kingstree.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Union Station AME Church with the Rev. Friendly Gadson, pastor, eulogist, the Rev. Leroy T. James, assisting the Rev. Robert E. Galloway, the Rev. Emmanuel Davis, the Rev. Hezekiah Ellis and the Rev. Robert Hooper.

Burial followed in Neal Cemetery in Sumter.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of these services.
