Katherine S. Dickson

GEORGETOWN – Katherine Sugg Dickson, formerly of Ridgeville, died Friday, June 2, 2006, in Prince George Healthcare Center in Georgetown.

Born July 29, 1922, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late George C. and Zola Britton Sugg. Mrs. Dickson was a graduate of Manning High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Georgetown, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was very active in church activities. She was secretary and bookkeeper for George Vanderbilt at Arcadia Plantation for years.
After moving to Charleston, she was an interior decorator for Southeastern Galleries for many years, and was an active member of the UDC and the DAR in the Charleston area. She retired and lived in Ridgeville. She was predeceased by her husband of 29 years, Plowden Dickson Sr., and her sister, Mary Sugg Powell.

Surviving are her beloved long-term friend and companion of 32 years, Herbert Rowell Jr. of Ridgeville; two sons, Plowden (Rosslyn) Dickson Jr. of Charleston, Charles Sugg (Ora Dell) Dickson of Sumter; daughter, Mary Katherine “Kathy” D. (Wayne) Inman of Georgetown; three brothers, George C. “Bud” Sugg Jr. of Pawleys Island, Turner B. Sugg of Southport, N.C., and William “Billy” Sugg of Sumter; a sister, Zola Mae S. Clayton of Williamston, N.C.; four grandchildren, Debbie Inman Smith, Plowden Dickson III, George W. Inman and Kevin L. Dickson; seven step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 5, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Lindsay Inman officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Ivy L. Evans

Ivy Loney Evans, 98, died on Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at National Health Care, Sumter.

Born on Sept. 26, 1907, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Viola Evans. She moved to New York, where she spent more than 50 years of her life. There she worked as a nanny, and served as a faithful member at Refuge Temple in downtown New York.

She moved to Sumter in 1993, where she lived on her own for 11 years and resided at National Health Care for the remainder of her being.

Loving memories will be forever cherished by her devoted daughter, Mable “Cooney” Clarkson of Sumter; one sister, Agnes (James) Temoney of Washington; five grandchildren, Shirley Clarkson, John (Teesta) Clarkson Jr., both of Sumter, Joseph Clarkson of Columbia, Mary Etta Clarkson of Gainesville, Fla., and Terry (Vivian) Clarkson of Atlanta, Ga.; nine great-grandchildren, Anthony Smalls, Darnell Clarkson, Tianna Clarkson, Adrienne Clarkson, Brian Clarkson, all of Georgia, Yolanda (Vincent) Dupree, Chrystal (Terry) Morgan, Joey Clarkson, all of Columbia, and John (Annette) Clarkson III of Huntsville, Ala.; 10 great-great-grandchildren, Tijah Clarkson and Jewel Clarkson, both of Sumter, Khadijah Clarkson of Detroit, Mich., Samarie Clarkson, Alyssa Clarkson of Alabama, Devon Clarkson, TaShaun White, Genobia Clarkson, Kara Clarkson, and Latrell Dupree, all of Columbia; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Ivy’s legacy is lived on through five living generations the youngest of which is her great-great-great-granddaughter, Jabria Clarkson of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Ed Evans; daughter, Lyla Evans; son-in-law, John Clarkson Sr.; and granddaughter, Linda Clarkson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 3, 2006, from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., in Sumter, with the Rev. Eddie C. Thomas Jr. officiating, eulogist.

Floral bearers were family and friends.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

Burial was in the Clark’s United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery, Sumter.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph E. Hand

Joseph E. Hand, 77, husband of Eileen Sterrath Hand, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at his home in Manning.

Born May 25, 1929, in Jersey City, N.J., he was a son of the late Theodore and Ursula Leach Hand. He was former owner and operator of Jeffco Building Supply Co., a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife of Manning; four daughters, Eileen Lyttle of Holmdel, N.J., Colleen (Paul) Pienciak of Linden, N.J., Diane (Joe) DiLorenzo of James Island and Joanne (Chris) Tofolo of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Kristin, James, Ryan, Jillian, Stephen, Christian and Caitlin; four brothers, Robert Hand of Landing, N.J., Larry Hand of Oakland, N.J., Edward Hand of Manahawkin, N.J., and Donald Hand of Brick Township, N.J.; two sisters, Ursula Feehan of Hazlet, N.J., and Pat Scarcellie of Brick Township, N.J.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Theodore Hand and William Hand.

A funeral mass was held on Monday, June 5, 2006, in Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Thomas Kingsley officiating.

Burial with military honors followed in the National Cemetery in Florence.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, in memory of Joseph E. Hand, P.O. Box 395, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Ruth G. Neal

Mrs. Ruth Green Neal died at her home on Sunday morning, June 4, 2006.

The daughter of the late Mr. James Green and Mrs. Susannah Hampton McNair, she was born May 20, 1920, in Clarendon County.

At an early age she confessed to having the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined New Hope AME Church, where she was a faithful Sunday school scholar.

Most of her elementary education was attained in Wilmington, N.C., and Lincoln High School in Sumter. She received her high school diploma from Morris College in 1939 and a B.A. degree from Morris College in 1942. She taught school in Clarendon County District 2 for 26 years before retiring in 1971 because of failing health.

She was married to the late Harrison Neal Jr. To this union six children were born. Two children preceded her in death, Harrison Winwright and Alma Loretta, and a step-grandson, Raymond Rogers. After her marriage, she joined New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. A few years later, the family joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member who served on the Gospel and Senior Choirs, Missionary Ministry and Deaconess Ministry.

She leaves to cherish her memories her children, Debra (Sam) Jones, James (Marilyn) Neal, William (Sheila) Neal, all of Sumter; and Rutherford “Rudy” (Angela) Neal of Alpharetta, Ga.; grandchildren, Kevin and Carol, Brandi, James “J.C.” Carnell, Kimberly, Shameka and McKenzie; step-grandchildren, Pamela, Sheena and Sammy; foster grandchildren, Sybil and Eddie; a great-grandchild, Loren, a step-grandchild, Ja’Nya; a sister-in-law, Mae P. Neal; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 6, 2006, in the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame officiating, Evangelist Savitra McFadden, the Rev. Aurelia Hill and Minister Sheila Neal.

Burial followed in the Neal Cemetery in Sumter.

Madison E. Rogers

Madison Elizabeth Rogers, 2, daughter of Richard Stephen “Ricky” Rogers and Marion Lindell Scott Rogers, died Thursday, June 1, 2006.

Madison was born Jan. 8, 2004, in Manning, and was a member of Paxville Baptist Church.

Surviving besides her parents of Paxville are three sisters, Peyton Hite Rogers, Jessica Ann Rogers and Amber Marie Scott; paternal grandparents, Cheryl Coleman Mathis and Wayne Mathis of Sumter; maternal grandfather, Wayne A. Scott; paternal great grandmother, Barbara “Mimi” Coleman of Sumter; maternal uncles, Eddie (Tosha) Scott of Paxville and Wayne A. (Gloria) Scott Jr. of Florence; maternal aunt, Melissa (Stanley) Barkley of Paxville; paternal uncles, Robert Marion Stukes of Charleston and Erik Wayne Mathis of Sumter; and paternal aunt, Deidre Nicole Mathis of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 4, 2006, in Paxville Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Bishop and the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.

Burial followed in Paxville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Paxville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 5005, Paxville, S.C. 29102.

Melvin Brayboy Jr.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Melvin “Jack” Brayboy Jr., 54, companion of Devon Gambrell, died Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Beth Israel Hospital in Brooklyn.

Born Sept. 8, 1950, in the Turbeville section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Melvin Brayboy Sr. and Phyllis Witherspoon Brayboy. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, graduating from Walker-Gamble High School Class of 1968. He worked at Chase Manhattan Bank for 18 years and Prudential Security for 16 years.

Survivors besides his companion, Devon Gambrell of Brooklyn, include four sons, Daniel Melvin (Nicola) Brayboy and Jonathan Brayboy, both of Greensboro, N.C., Timothy (Talia) Brayboy of Bronx, N.Y., and Titus (Calandra) Brayboy of Pinewood; two daughters, Kimberly (Marcus) Brayboy of Bronx and Melanie Brayboy of Queens, N.Y.; two stepsons, George Ibbott and Illya Ibbott of Brooklyn; four brothers, Willie (Virginia) Andrews of Turbeville, Harry (Dorothy) Brayboy of Lynchburg, Robert (Diane) Andrews of Baltimore, Md., and Charles (Julia) Brayboy of Dillon; six sisters, Gracie (Emanuel) Mack and Evangelist Rhonda (Deacon Wallace) Keels of Manning, Mary (Smiley) Dickey of Turbeville, Shirley Lancaster and Renise Wells of New Zion, and Hattie Mae McFadden of Sumter; six grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; four aunts, Virginia Pearson and Lottie Witherspoon of Turbeville, Icybelle McClam of Sumter, and Bertha Brayboy of Baltimore; and one uncle, Troy Brayboy of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Julia Hemingway, and three brothers, Joseph, John E. Andrews and Stanley Brayboy.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Frank J. Barone Funeral Home in Brooklyn.

Rachel Lou B. Williams

Rachel Lou Blanding Williams, 94, widow of David Williams, died May 27, 2006, at her residence in Alcolu.

Born Dec. 28, 1911, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Joe Blanding and Rachel Samuel Blanding. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Cypress Fork AME Church, where in her youth she accepted Christ. She served as president of the usher board and as a member of the steward board and missionary society.

Survivors include two grandsons she reared as sons, Marion Williams of Philadelphia, Pa., and Ronald McFadden of Miami, Fla.; three daughters, Mable Taylor of Queens, N.Y., Vallie Ree (Roosevelt) Daney of Manning and Yvette (John) Starks of Miami; a granddaughter reared as a daughter, Diane (Robert) Mathis of the home; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Cypress Fork AME Church, in Alcolu, with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Franklin McCants and the Rev. Moses Wilson presiding.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Julia Stukes

Julia Stukes, 81, widow of Harrison Stukes Sr., died Sunday, May 29,2005.

Born on June 15, 1923, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Adam Harvin and Hester Chestnut Harvin.

She attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church.

She is survived by two sons, James (Sylvia) Stukes of Eastorange, N.J. and Elder Harrison (Laura) Stukes Jr. of New York City; four daughters, Dorothy (Bennie) Mickens of New York City, Peggy Drayton of Bronx, N.Y., Gertrude (Leon) Williams of Columbia and Mildred Stukes of the home; one adopted daughter, Lucille Glaton of Columbia; two sisters, Ethel Oliver of Philadelphia and Phoza Smith of New York City; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchilren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 7 at The Historical Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Melvin J. Capers, pastor, and Elder Harrison Stukes, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Services was in charge of the arrangements.

Gernell M. McIntosh

Gernell McLeod McIntosh, 78, wife of Raymond Eldrid McIntosh, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at her home in Pinewood.

Born April 13, 1927, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Isadore and Mary Elizabeth Geddings McLeod. She was married to Raymond E. McIntosh on November 14, 1946. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, retired from Summerton Uniform and worked for 25 years as a bookkeeper for their family farm. She was a member of Pinewood Baptist Church, the Fidelis Sunday School Class and the WMU.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; two brothers, Matthew McLeod and Clyde McLeod; five sisters, Almeta McLeod, Gladys M. Alsbrooks, Lottie Mae M. Richardson, Floreed M. Brewer and Pearl M. Williams; and a son-in-law, Harold Thames.

Surviving besides her husband of Pinewood are two daughters, Jean M. Thames and Sharon M. (Cecil) Lamb of Sumter; two sons, Leslie B. (Elaine) McIntosh and Benny Ray (Lois) McIntosh of Pinewood; a brother, James (Laverne) McLeod of Sumter; six grandchildren, Van (Shelly) Thames, Teresa (Wayne) Browder, Benny (Tracy) McIntosh, Chris (Jesseca) Lamb, Travis (Cyndi) McIntosh and Joseph (Christina) McIntosh; 11 great-grandchildren, Jessica Thames, Ashleigh Thames, Zachary Thames, Lyncoln Browder, Abby Browder, Carmen Browder, Mallory McIntosh, Hadleigh McIntosh, Nolan Lamb, Cortland McIntosh and Dawson McIntosh.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 6, 2005, in Pinewood Baptist Church with the Revs. Bennie Barwick and Sim Smith officiating.

Burial followed in Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Manning.
