Emma N. Hodge

BALTIMORE, Md. – Emma Nelson Hodge, widow of William Hodge, died June 1, 2005, at Bon-Secours Hospital, Baltimore.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James and Mattie B. Nelson. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and was employed with Home Health Services.

Survivors include two sons, Jonathan Hodge and Nathaniel Hodge, both of Baltimore; four daughters, Mary Brady, Elease Griffin and Kathleen Wallace, all of Baltimore, and Ella Johnson of Manning; one sister, Corine Baxter of Manning; three brothers, Robert Nelson of Sumter, Willie Lee Nelson and Albert Nelson, both of Baltimore; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Monday, June 6, 2005, at New Bethel Baptist Church in Baltimore.

Joseph Brown Funeral Home of Baltimore was in charge of services.

Barney Goines

Barney Goines, 70, husband of Jessie Mae Sweat Goines, died June 1, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 4, 1935, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Deacon Blanding and Loree Smiling Goines. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he attended and was baptized at the Bethesda Baptist Church. He served as chairman of the trustee board, member of the church cemetery committee and program committee. He was employed for 27 years at Georgia Pacific and was president of Local 273 Union for several years. He owned and operated Goines Trucking Co., was a gospel promoter and an avid farmer for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jessie Mae S. Goines of the home; five daughters, Mary L. Jenkins, Sharon E. (Frank) Logan, Barbara A. (Luke) Gilbert, Venus G. (Joseph) Montgomery, Frances L. (Robert) Mellette; three sons, Deacon Blanding L. (Cindy) Goines, Hubert J. Goines and Morriel F. Goines; three sisters, Natharene Riley, Ardell Smiling and Louise (Robert) Wilson; two brothers, Roland (Ulease) Goines and Claremont (Knenite) Goines; 35 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barney Mae Goines Richburg; three sisters, Ruby Conyers, Hilda Wells and Lavica Mack; and two brothers, Vack Goines and Doris Goines.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 4, 2005, at Canty Memorial Church of God in Christ with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, eulogist, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Albertus Smiling, Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Willie Wright and Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr.

Burial followed in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Chris Cooper

Sally Christine “Chris” Cooper, 52, wife of John C. Cooper, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, in McLeod Hospital in Florence.

Born December 19, 1952, in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, she was a daughter of William B. Cooper and the late Mildred Horton Cooper. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning and father of Memphis, Tennessee, are stepmother, Nadine Cooper of Memphis; daughter, Rebecca (James) Culbertson of Belton; son, Daniel (Jenny) Cooper of Land O’Lakes, Fla; three sisters, Arlene Cooper of Los Angeles, Calif., Cindy Pennington of Memphis, and Lisa Zamora of Frisco, Texas; three stepbrothers, Tim, David and Paul Cooper of Memphis; three grandchildren, Alissa, Bobbi-Jo and Cooper Culbertson.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, June 8, 2005, in Greenville Memorial Gardens, Greenville, S.C., with the Rev. Charles Rice officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Animal Shelter of Clarendon County, P. O. Box 414, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Annette W. Conyers

Annette “Susie” Warner Conyers, 41, died Friday morning, May 27, 2005, at her residence in the Paxville community of Manning.

Born Dec. 30, 1963, in Miami, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Mae Alice Conyers Holliday and Fred Williams and stepdaughter of Bishop Raymond (Brenda) Holliday. She was also reared by her grandparents, the late Levester and Daisy Conyers. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, graduating from Manning High School Class of 1983. She continued her education at Benedict College in Columbia and Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter. She was employed as a rural mail carrier in Sumter and Clarendon counties. She was formerly an employee of Federal Mogul in Summerton as a quality control specialist. She also was employed and resided in Jacksonville, Fla., for five years. She returned to this community to care for her mother and grandfather.

Survivors include four brothers, Danny Wright of Columbia, Charles Wright of Manning, Fred Williams Jr. of Miami and Mitchell Kent of Omaha, Neb.; four sisters, Denise (Bernard) McFarlin of Manning, Esme (Jeremy) Tanksley of Albany, Ga., Veronica Oliver of Miami and Kathy Stillman of Miami; five uncles; two aunts; two nephews; three nieces; and her godmother, Cynthia F. Stukes of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by a son, Caleb Conyers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Henry K. Pressley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Reatha Nelson, the Rev. Cokley Richburg, Elder Shelly Hickson and Bishop Raymond Holliday.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Edmond Cain Jr.

DALZELL – Edmond “Money” Cain Jr., 60, husband of Shirley Dukes Cain, died June 10, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Oct. 16, 1945, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Edmond Cain Sr. and Mary Ellison Cain. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Union Cypress AME Church. He was the owner and operator of E&J Auto Body Shop, Sumter.

Survivors besides his wife, Shirley Dukes Cain of the home, include two sons, Rodney Cain of Florence and Ronald Cain of Sumter; two daughters, Sherry Cain of Columbia and Sharon Cain of Dalzell; two brothers, Everett (Margaret) Cain of Spring Hope, N.C., and Henry Cain of Manning; five sisters, Suester Blackwell and Juanita (Robert) Waiters, both of Manning, Hattie (Muldrow) Burgess and Evelyn (Alexander) Burgess, both of Philadelphia, Pa., and Inez Cain of Yeadon, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Union Cypress AME Church, in the Jordan community, Manning, with the Rev. Betty Clark, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Esau Clark and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Abbegale G. Billups

Abbegale Green Billups, 37, wife of James L. Billups, died Nov. 18, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia.

Born Oct. 4, 1967, in Rimini, she was a daughter of the late Roosevelt Billups and Birnather Green.

Mrs. Billups received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County.

She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and served on its usher board, adult choir and pastor aide board.

In addition, she served as secretary of its Sunday school, Christian Fellowship Association, Youth Missionary Association, YWCA and many others.

Survivors besides her husband include one son, Willie Jackson III of the home; two daughters, Aerial Billups and Kayla Wilder, both of Summerton; six brothers, Robert (Connie) Green and John H. Green, both of Thomasville, N.C., Thomas Green of White Plains, N.Y., Jimmy Lee Green of Georgia, Moses Oliver and Barry Ragin, both of Summerton; three sisters, Freddie Louise Green of Summerton, Earlo Mae Gaymon and Betsy Green, both of Thomasville, N.C.; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton, with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Dr. W. T. Johnson, Dr. Cokley Richburg, J.H. Pringle and Evangelist Elizabeth Pack.

Burial followed in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Rev. R.N. “Cap” Wells Sr.

The Rev. R.N. “Cap” Wells Sr., 89, widower of Geraldine Fletcher Wells, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 at Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee.

Wells was born July 8, 1915 in Manning to the late Joseph LeGrande and Roberta Newton Wells. He was a graduate of Wofford College and Duke University Divinity School. He served as a minister with the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. During his career, he served churches in Little River, Blenheim, Aynor, Greeleyville, Lane, Salters, Chesterfield-St. Paul, Timmonsville-Pine Grove and Lydia-Wesley Chapel. Following his retirement, Wells remained active in Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Among his survivors are son, Robert N. (Mary Layton) Wells Jr. of Florence; brother, Luke Wells of Manning and grandchildren, Robert, Benjamin and Stephen Wells of Florence.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004 at Pine Grove United Methodist Church near McColl. The family suggests memorials be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Roy Stillwell, 1066 Adamsville Road, McColl, S.C. 29570.

Alonza Green

Alonza Green, 42, departed this earthly life on June 4, 2004, at his residence in Manning.

A son of Margaret Ragin Lawson, he was born Aug. 28, 1961, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County. He was reared by the late James Green and Frances Thomas Green.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Welhelmina Dorsey; and three brothers, Harry Lee Green, James Green Jr. and Steven Green.

Alonza was joined in holy matrimony to the late Andrea M. Green. He received his formal education at Scott’s Branch High in Summerton. He served in the United States Army for four years. In his early years, he joined Mt. Pleasant UME Church and served faithfully on the choir and usher board. He was the recipient of the “Man of the Year” award. He later joined Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church and was an active member. During his lifetime, he served faithfully in the community also and was president of the Holly Court Apartments Neighborhood Watch Program and a member of the Masonic Silver Lodge 35 in Pinewood.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories his mother, Margaret Lawson of Summerton; his mother-in-law, Emma Dowe of Pinewood; two stepdaughters, Ebony James of Summerton and Erica Jackson of Pinewood; nine sisters, Earnestine (Henry) Greene and Willene (Israel) James, both of Atlanta, the Rev. Willistine (Joseph) Lagree of Columbia, Roxanne (Harrison) Richardson, Felicia Green, Patricia Green, Sharon Green, all of Pinewood, Jeanette Jones of Manning, and Carolyn Brailsford of Panola; 10 brothers, Simon Lawson of Bronx, N.Y., Paul Lawson, Victor Lawson, Kimbly (Teresa) Lawson, all of Atlanta, Edward (Carrie) Lawson of Savannah, Ga., Virgil Lawson of Summerton, Reginald (Alison) Lawson of Orangeburg, George Jones of Manning, Anthony Glover of Bronx, N.Y., and Nathen Green of Washington, D.C.; a godson, John O’Shea Stowers; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, in Manning, with the Rev. George P. Windley Sr., pastor, assisting the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie Mae T. Johnson

Johnnie Mae Thomas Johnson, 88, widow of James McQueen (J.Q.) Johnson, died June 9, 2004, in Lexington Medical Center.

Born Oct. 24, 1915, in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late John Edwin and Cornelia Chandler Thomas. She was a longtime member of Manning United Methodist Church and the Nelle Wells Sunday School Class. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed spending her time with family and friends, and was loved by all those who knew her.

Surviving are a son, Tommy (Sharon) Johnson of Aiken; a daughter, Jackie Mims of Lexington; granddaughters, Elizabeth Shaw of Richburg and Melanie (Tommy) Jackson of Lexington; step-grandsons, Paul Bayles of Atlanta and David Bayles of Illinois; seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary Brewer of Manning, Louise Burke of Sumter and Susie Mellott of North Charleston; and a brother-in-law, Billy Robertson of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Esther Graham, Lucille Thomas and Sara Robertson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 11, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Burial followed in Wilson Union United Methodist Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Mary Ann J. Kinlaw

Mrs. Mary Ann Jones Kinlaw, widow of Mr. Ernest Kinlaw, died June 5, 2004, at Windsor Manor Nursing Center, Summerton.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Mr. Bennie Billups and Mrs. Lucille Jones Billups. Mrs. Kinlaw obtained her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton.

Survivors include one brother, Mr. Sam (Marva) Billups of Bronx, N.Y.; one sister, Mrs. Julia Singleton of Summerton; one aunt, Mrs. Maybelle Walker of Summerton; and one uncle, Mr. Henry Jones of Davis Station.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 11, 2004, at Fleming and DeLaine Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Melvin J. Capers officiating.

Burial was in Liberty Hill AME Church Cemetery, Summerton.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
