David Farmer

David Farmer, 76, died, Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville.

Born July 22, 1926, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Major Logan and Rebecca Farmer Logan Johnson. He was raised by the late Obie Farmer and Pickney Major.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church and later joined Salem Baptist Church where he was a member of the senior choir, the senior usher board and the brotherhood choir. He was also a member of the International Masons, Pride of Sumter Lodge Number 035. Farmer retired from Georgia Pacific, Inc., after many years of service.

Survivors include one son, Joseph Samuel (Cathy) of Sumter; three stepsons, David Samuel (Elizabeth), and Frankie Lee Samuel (Mary) of Sumter, and William Samuel (Darlene) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Rebecca Parrott (Larry) and Agnes Jennings (Raymon) of Sumter; one stepdaughter, Minnie Pearl Johnson of Paxville; three sisters, Bessie Baxter, Mazelle Ford (Henry), and Ruby Scott (Willard) of Sumter; 24 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 12, at Salem Baptist Church in Sumter. The Rev. Dr. N. Lamont Newsom, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Evangelist Savitra McFadden, the Rev. Dr. L. Winn and the Rev. Leroy T. James.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Margaret Henry

Margaret “Mutt” Henry, 66, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility.

Born June 11, 1937, in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Maggie and Mitchell Washington and the adopted daughter of the late Robert and Alva Davis Henry.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Jackson of S.C.; seven sisters, Lillie Mae, Daisy Belle, and Louvinia, of of S.C., Rosa and Lubertha of Pa., Carrie of N.C., and Susie of N. Y.; four brothers, Jessie, Allan Jr. and Bennie of of S.C., and Jessie of Wash., D.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two special friends, Sammie of S.C. and Hattie Plowden; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held on Saturday, July 5, at 11 a.m. at Job’s Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., Sumter. The Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. officiated the service.

Burial followed in Mayesville Cemetery, Mayesville.

Robert Nelson

Robert “Teddy” Nelson, 59, companion of Sadie Adger Hayes, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 1102 Tearcoat Road, Alcolu.

Born March 7, 1944, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Levi Nelson Sr. and Cardiver Frierson Nelson. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1964 graduate of Manning Training School. He was an employee of Square D for 25 years. He served in the Vietnam War and received an honorable discharge. In his youth, he joined Reeseville AME Church.

Survivors besides his companion, Sadie A. Hayes of the home, include two sons, Robert Lee Nelson Jr. of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Bernard Nelson of Largo, Fla.; one stepson, Reggie Hayes of Paxville; two stepdaughters, Melissa Hayes of Lithonia, Ga., and Michelle Mahoney of Sumter; four brothers, Grant Lee Nelson of New York City, William Levi Nelson Jr. of Sumter, Selvin (Barbara) Nelson of Alcolu and Larry Nelson of Manning; five sisters, Lillie Kelly of Manning, Inez (Franklin) Simmons of Alcolu, Emma (Raymond) Larris of Baltimore, Phozia Jackson and Barbara Nelson, both of New York City; and seven step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Reeseville AME Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Marie Harvin, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mitchel Adger and the Rev. W.J. Chandler.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Leroy Tidwell

Mr. Leroy Tidwell, 68, husband of Linda Lowder Tidwell, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Lee County, he was the son of the late James Roland Tidwell and the late Janie Outlaw Tidwell.

Mr. Tidwell attended Green Acres Assembly of God Church and the Paxville Baptist Church. He was formerly employed by Shaw Air Force Base Civil Service. He was founder of Country Cured Meats and Tidwell Landscaping and Plumbing Co. He was first married to the late Jean S. Tidwell.

Survivors, besides his wife of Manning, include two sons, R.L. Tidwell Jr. and James C. Osborne of Sumter; two daughters, Susan E. Tidwell and Brenda T. Long of Sumter; a brother, Eugene Tidwell of Lexington; three sisters, Lorine Broadway of Manning, Eula Walker of Sumter and Jennie Farmer of Covington, Ga.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Allen Alsbrooks of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ken Alsbrooks of Deland, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Sheila Platt and Sharon Moore of Manning; six step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory. The Revs. Donnie Collins and the Eugene Mosier officiated the service. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Susannah Lesane

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Susannah Lesane, 76, widow of Julius Lesane, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Greenville Hospital, Jersey City, N.J.

Born March 30, 1927, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Edster Tomlin Sr. and Alice Blackwell Tomlin. She received her education at Westminister Public School in Clarendon County. At an early age, she received Christ and was baptized. She relocated to Jersey City, N.J., and joined New Hope Baptist Church Years later, she joined New Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member for more than 20 years. “Sue,” as she was affectionately known, was employed for more than 15 years at Jonathan Logan, until they closed. For the next 15 years, she worked at Central Laundry with many of her friends. Her last 15 years before retirement were spent in the Dietary Department at Greenville Hospital.

Survivors include her only child, Alice (Walter) McLeod; three sisters, Sarah China, Mary Kennedy and Ann McFadden, all of Sumter; four brothers, Edster Tomlin of Augusta, Ga., James Herbert Tomlin of Columbia, Eugene (Shirley) Tomlin and Albertus (Betty) Tomlin, both of Sumter; four granddaughters, Geraldine (Melvin) Williams, Jacqueline (John) McLeod-Williams, Suzette (Derrick) DeLoach and Deaconess Lakeisha (Deacon Michael) Lynch; 12 great-grandchildren; three aunts; three sisters-in-law; a special friend of more than 35 years, Otis Jenkins of Jersey City, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Leroy, John Wesley, Lee and Willie Tomlin; and one sister, Naomi Tomlin.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at St. Paul AME Church, Plowden Mill Road, with the Rev. Dr. B.J. Glover, pastor.

Burial was in Durant Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Lillie B. Hamilton

Lillie Baxter Hamilton, 85, widow of Jerry Hamilton, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Nazareth and Luetisher Tindal Baxter. She was educated in the public schools of Manning. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined Beards Chapel AME Church in Charleston, where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. For 50 years, she was employed as a seamstress.

Survivors include a devoted nephew, Richard Baxter of the home; one adopted daughter, Daisy Calhoun of Sumter; five sisters, Gladys (Ivan) St. Thomas and Rosa J. Fullard, both of Sumter, Luetisher Dickey of Lynchburg, Cardie M. Gamble of Baltimore and Jennie (Burk) Holliday of Slow Low, Ariz.; two brothers, Douglas (Katherine) Baxter of Lynchburg and Hayward (Ruth) Hough of Baltimore; one brother-in-law, Ben Murray of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one adopted son, Lorenzo Hamilton; and one adopted daughter, Mary A. Baxter Wilson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, U.S. 301, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor.

Burial was in Elizabeth Church Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Floyd

Dorothy “Dot” Thompson Floyd, 79, wife of Alfred J. Floyd Sr., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Sumter.

Born Dec. 1, 1924, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Edward and Callie Daniels Thompson. Mrs. Floyd was a member of Lemira Presbyterian Church. She worked for Carolina Power & Light Co. for 29 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by many.

Survivors include her devoted and loving husband of 57 years, Alfred J. Floyd Sr.; a daughter, Cindy Gailey and husband, Michael, of Asheville, N.C.; a son, Al Floyd Jr. and wife, Melanie, of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Rachel and Andrew Gailey, and Trey and Brooks Floyd; three sisters, Hazel Boyce, Joyce Link and Cleo DuBose; four brothers, Harold Thompson, Hugh Ray Thompson, Murray Thompson and Julian Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janis Floyd; three sisters, Cecile Thompson, Caro Andrews and Eva Lee; and two brothers, Ed Thompson and Billy Thompson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew E. Basham Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy C. Ardis

Dorothy Copeland Ardis, 78, wife of Wilbur C. Ardis Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Robert O. and Mabel White Copeland. She was a member of Manning First Baptist Church, attended Anderson College, and worked as a clerk for General Telephone for 30 years.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are one son, W. Carlyle Ardis Jr. and wife, Susan, of Manning; three grandchildren, Stacy Stevens, Carole Evans and Wilbur C. Ardis III; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ida Ruth Holladay, Iona C. Phillips and Martha C. Hightower.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Revs. Danny Bridges and Carey McElveen officiating. Burial followed in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Manning First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 610, Manning, SC 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn M. Wilson

Carolyn Levon McFadden Wilson, 50, wife of Eddie Wilson, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 1, 1952, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Myers McFadden and Midred Dimery McFadden. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Melina Presbyterian Church. She attend Walker-Gamble High School.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Wilson Jr., of Landover, Md., two daughters, Keisha Wilson and Tamara (Michael) Coleman, of the home; one brother, Myers (Jacqueline) McFadden of the home; one sister, Queen (James) Diggs of Silver Springs, Md.; two grandchildren; six nieces she reared as her own, Sharon, Kim, Karen, Vette, Sharie and Breanna.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Melina Presbyterian Church, Gable, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

William K. Pearson

William “Willie” King Pearson, 78, son of the late Hattie Bell King McKnight and Selven Pearson, stepson of the late Edward McKnight, died May 7, 2003. He was born April 22, 1925, in Summerton.

He was reared in a Christian home and at an early age joined St. Mark AME Church. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. From there, he journeyed and served in the United States Navy. After serving in the Navy, he received an honorable discharge. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he resided in Brooklyn, where he was an entrepreneur. He also joined Calvary AME Church, where he served on the usher board and trustees. He was a thirty-third degree Mason of St. Johns Baptist lodge No. 10, Most Wishful United Orient Grand AF and AM Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon returning to Sumter, he reunited with St. Mark AME Church and was an active member in the life of the church. He served as an usher and trustee. In Sumter, he joined several organizations including the Spectrum Seniors Center, where he participated in the Senior Olympics and the bowling league. He was the driver for the senior activities.

Willie was a man who loved God and his family.

Survivors include a loving wife, Geneva S. Pearson; four daughters, Marilyn Roberts and her husband, George, of Bronx, N.Y., Sabrina and Elisa Patrick of Boston and Dorothy Green and her husband, Richard, of Thomasville, N.C.; six sons, Harvey Stukes and his wife, Debbie of Coppers Cove, Texas, Johns Stukes and his wife, Thomasine, of Thomasville, Jimmy Stukes and his wife, Joeann, of Sumter, Joseph Stukes and his wife, Karen, of Thomasville, Sidney Stukes of Copper Cove and Winfred Stukes and his wife, Frizel, of Summerton; two sister, Dorothy McKnight Wiley of Lithonia, Ga., and Laverne Brooks and her husband, Calvin, of Richmond, Va.; one adopted sister, Suzanne Gist; two brothers, James McKnight and his wife, Marilyn, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and David McKnight of Brooklyn; an aunt, Mrs. Victoria Brailsford of Manning; a grand-uncle, Johnny Dyson of Buffalo, N.Y.; a stepmother, Mrs. Christine Pearson of Richmond; a God mother, Mrs. Julia Constantine; 25 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark AME Church with the Rev. Ernest Brown presiding, assisted by the Rev. O.J. Hannah

Burial followed in St. Mark Memorial Garden.

The nieces served as honorary floral bearers and the missionary at St. Mark AME Church as honorary floral bearer. The trustees of St. Mark AME Church served as honorary pallbearers.
