Charlie L. Weathers

Columbia - Charlie L. Weathers, 70, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.

Born Dec. 15, 1932, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Wash Weathers Sr. and Lillie Davis Weathers. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors include two brothers, Wash Weathers of Baltimore and Frank Weathers of Tilly, N.C.; three sisters, Lillie Cordon of Washington, D.C., and Annie Gillum and Bertha Weathers of Rembert; and three aunts, Sarah Carryall of Columbia, Lassie China of Rembert and Katherine Williams of Chapin.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Jones.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. R.E. Bennett officiating.

Burial followed in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Rembert.

Family and friends served as pallbearers and flower bearers.

Lindy L. Moore

Lindy Liston Moore, 76, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at a Columbia hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Rufus Talmadge Moore and Mary DuBose Moore. He served as a Marine during the Korean War, retired as a carpenter with the Freeman Mill and was a member of the Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae Robinson of the home; a daughter, Pam Moore of Sumter; a sister, Julia Moore of Turbeville; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Moore and Kitty Robinson; a special niece, Donna Parker; a special grandniece, Ashley Parker; and a number of special nephews and friends.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church in Turbeville. Burial followed in the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Free Will Baptist Children’s Home of Turbeville.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Marguerite C. Mills

Marguerite Cain Mills, 90, of Orangeburg, formerly of Manning, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004.

Born Aug. 29, 1913, in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late William Odil Cain and Marguerite Nelson Cain. She was reared in Sumter. She received her formal education in Sumter city schools and was a graduate of Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing. For many years she served as a registered nurse on the staff of Clarendon Memorial Hospital and, subsequently, as a school nurse for Clarendon County Schools. She was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Burgess Mills of Manning, William Cain Mills of Mt. Pleasant and David Nelson (Susan Mikell) Mills of Richmond, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Linda Haley Mills of Manning; five grandchildren, Emmie Mills Michau, Robert Burgess Mills Jr., Anne Tiphaine Mills, David Nelson Mills Jr. and Julian Paisley Mikell Mills; a great-grandson, Blake Burgess Micheau; and a sister, Emily Cain Fraser of Lexington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roland Dow Mills III; three sisters and two brothers.

A family burial service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at the Manning Cemetery. The Very Rev. William N. McKeachie, Dean of The Cathedral Church of St. Luke & St. Paul, Charleston, officiated the service.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Sam Harrison

Robert Sam Harrison, 68, husband of Lizzie Epps Harrison, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born on Jan. 12, 1935, in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Sam Harrison and Pearl McDowell Harrison. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church. He was employed for more than 25 years with Harris Welch Farms in Turbeville.

Survivors, besides his wife, include five sons, Sammie (Mae Thelma) Harrison Jr. of Lynchburg, Tommie Harrison of New Zion, Larry (Maggie) Harrison of Lynchburg, Gary (Thomasena) Harrison of Coward, and Louis Miller of Turbeville; five daughters, Patricia Harrison of Turbeville, Shirly (Bob) Faulk of Gable, Teresa (Wyman) Moore of Lynchburg, Denise (Steven) Green of Olanta, and Lashonda (Harvin) Frierson of Manning; three brothers, J.L. Harrison (Ethel) and Willie Harrison of Turbeville, George (Bo) Harrison of Scranton; five sisters, Ida Mae Harey of Philadelphia, Sadie Rufus and Pearl Harrison both of Turbeville, Meida Williams of Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y., and Noble (Daniel) Stephens of Little River; 27 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.

Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Turbeville. The Rev. Zander Davis, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Moses “Son” Gibson Jr.

Moses “Son” Gibson Jr., 59, husband of Jewel Cooley Gibson, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in the River Road Community of Summerton.

Born Jan. 22, 1944, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Moses Gibson Sr. and Lessie Johnson Gibson. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church. He was employed with Local 172 for 35 years in Trenton, N.J., until his retirement.

Survivors include, a son, James Gibson of Baltimore, two step-sons, Stephene and Darren McGee of Trenton; two daughters, Patricia Gibson of Baltimore and Christa Gore of Myrtle Beach; a step-daughter, Cynthia Coleman of Trenton; four brothers, Louis (Alice) Gibson, Willie (Susie) Gibson, Leon Gibson, of Summerton, and Rufus (Bertha) Gibson of Deerfield, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Tyrone “Ronnie” Gibson.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, in The Greater St. Phillip RUME Church in Rimini. The Rev. Warren Hatcher officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Amos Hatcher and Jacob Clark.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Janie Gaskin

WALTERBORO – Janie Pauline Green Gaskin, 87, of Easley, formerly of Walterboro, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at her son’s residence in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Gaskin was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Turbeville, and was the daughter of the late Daniel Luther Green and Susan Alma Broadway Green. Janie graduated from Turbeville High School and Winthrop College. She did graduate work at the University of South Carolina and The Citadel. She taught school for 33 years in the high schools of Hemingway, Moncks Corner and Walterboro.

Janie was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Easley, where she was a member of the Wesley Bible Class. Before moving to Easley, she was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church, being active in the Chancel Choir for 61 years and other positions with young people of various churches. She was a member of teacher-related organizations, past member of the Pickens County Education Association and Pickens County AARP. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International from April, 1961 until her death.

Survivors include a son, David Lowell (Doris Chestnut) Gaskin Jr., of Mount Pleasant; a daughter, Kaye Gaskin Young of Easley; four grandchildren, Christina Gaskin Davis of Rock Hill, Jeanie Gaskin Bristow of Rock Hill, Lt. Charles Antony Young of the U.S. Navy stationed in Japan, and David Lowell Young of Denton, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Jussely, Lowell and Anna Davis of Rock Hill; and a sister, Virginia Green of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Green Allen.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Bethel United Methodist Church, in Walterboro. The Rev. Lee Cotheran Jr. officiated the service. Burial followed in Live Oak Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to: Hospice of S.C. or Hospice of Charleston.

Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes of Walterboro was in charge of the arrangements.

William P. Marsh

William Patrick “Pat” Marsh, 69, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Born in Chesterfield County, he was the son of the late Bert E. Marsh and the late Mary Lee Ayers Marsh. Mr. Marsh was retired from the Sumter Item after over 30 years in the composing department. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and the Manchester Trail Riders.

Surviving are two sisters, Helen Tilford of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Margaret Marsh Lewis of Walhalla; two brothers, B.J. “Jeff” Marsh of Pinewood and Robert F. “Bob” Marsh of Summerton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Mr. Brian Hatfield officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Linsay Brooks

DALZELL — Retired 1st Sgt. Linsay Brooks, 79, of Dalzell, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005.

Born in Sparta, Ga., he was the son of the late Alex D. Brooks and Maggie Johnson Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a member of First Baptist Church in Elloree. He was the past restaurant manager of Clarks Restaurant in Santee, a member of the Easter Seals Society, past commander of Disabled Veterans Chapter 13, past president of the South Carolina Restaurant Association, the restaurant manager for J.B. Whites for several years, a member of the American Legion Post 6, and a Shriner with Hejaz. Mr. Brooks retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of dedicated service in which he served during the Korean War.

Mr. Brooks was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Brooks; his second wife, Louise Brooks; and his son, Linsay D. Brooks.

Surviving are his wife, Jo Ellen Brooks of the home; daughters, Beverly (Herman) Burke of Dalzell, Pamela Thomas of Wedgefield and Sarah (Jonathan) Dey of Shaw Air Force Base; son, David L. Brooks of Columbia; stepchildren, Nancy (Les) Beben of Sumter, Tammy (Charlie) Stone of Turbeville, Kimberly Combs of Dalzell, Richard (Meng) Combs San Diego, Debbie (John) Shantie of Goose Creek, Dottie (Don) Lees of Deltona, Fla., Tina (Joey) Hansen of Sumter, Carlos Pritchard of Sumter, Gary Pritchard of Santee, Larry Pritchard of Sumter, Mackie Pritchard of Santee and Harold Pritchard of Florida; a sister, Janie Marshall of Rossville, Ga.; a brother, Alec (Jimmie Rea) Rider of Gordon, Ga.; 27 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clark Clary officiating.

Full military honors and interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Greenlawn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Billy Lee Lynch Sr.

Billy Lee Lynch Sr., 69, husband of Mavis Lyles Lynch, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Oliver Lynch and the late Fozia Lowder Lynch. Mr. Lynch was a member of Concord Baptist Church and a member of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind. He was retired from Korn Industries.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two sons, Billy Lee Lynch Jr. of Hartsville and Karl Edward Lynch of Hampton, Tenn.; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Brown of Elkton, Md.; five sisters, Frances Dorrell of New Mexico, Mickey Sims of Toxey, Ala., Pat Brendlen and Shirley Boykin of Sumter and Betty Brewer of Manning; two brothers, Raymond Lynch and Edward Lynch, both of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Oliver and Fred Lynch; and a sister, Marie Lynch.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.

Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Concord Baptist Church Building Fund, 1885 Myrtle Beach Highway, Sumter, SC 29153.

Patricia Ann B. Miller

Patricia Ann Bilton Miller, 65, widow of Lloyd Keith Miller, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born June 28, 1939, in St. Paul, she was a daughter of Mary Ann K. Bilton and the late Wilson Whitaker Bilton Sr. She attended Santee Baptist Church.

Surviving besides her mother of Manning are three sons, Joe Miller of Manning, John Joiner of Pelham, Ga., and William Myler of Marianna, Fla.; four brothers, Wilson Whitaker Bilton Jr. of Manning, Joseph Charles Bilton of Holly Hill, John Wayne Bilton of North Carolina and Kenneth Brent Bilton of Manning; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Hodge of West Columbia.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Myler Walker.

Graveside services were held on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004 in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery. The Rev. William K. Cribb officiated.
