Willette Green White

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Willette Green White, 58, wife of Lawrence Larry White of New York, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn.

Born Dec. 8, 1946, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Carrie Doughty Green and the late Junious Green. In her youth, Willette was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church. In 1964, after graduating from Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, Willette moved to Baltimore, Md., and later moved to Brooklyn, where she joined New Covenant Church of Christ Disciples of Christ under the direction of Pastor James R. Ray. After fulfilling her godly commitment at New Covenant, she became a member of Greater Bible Way Church under the direction of Bishop Hugh Rogers. Willette was formerly employed by the United States Postal Service.

Willette was blessed with many gifts from God. One of her most loved talents was singing graceful vision from God. She loved to sing. She always went the extra mile with unconditional love to help others.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Todd (Pearline) White of Louisburg, N.C., and Kareem (Nicole) White of Brooklyn; two daughters, Jasmine White of Brooklyn and Cheryl Malone of Manning; a goddaughter, Stacey Mills; two brothers, Joenathan Green of Summerton and James (Maggie) Green of Richmond, Va.; six sisters, Mamie (Ray) Green Archer, Mattie (Clarence) Simms, both of Brooklyn, Julia (Jackie) Oliver of Columbia, Beatrice (Joe) House and Dorothy House, both of Summerton, and Berna Tina Green of Sumter; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Oct. 16, 2004, at Liberty Hill AME Church, Liberty Hill Road, Summerton, with the Rev. Melvin J. Capers, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Corine R. Conyers

Corine Robinson Conyers, 76, widow of Buster “Redbird” Conyers, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at her residence in Summerton.

Born Sept. 23, 1927, in Summerton, Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Robinson. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Richard (Yolanda) Robinson of Atlanta, Ga., and Vernon (Joyce) Robinson of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Mable Ann (Wille) Russell of the home and Shirley Robinson of the home; one aunt, Corletta James of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two uncles, Perry Weathers of Brooklyn and Freddie Weathers of Kingstree.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, assisted by Evangelist Betty L. Johnson and Pastor James Blanding.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Henry E. Evans

Henry Eugene “Buck” Evans, 51, husband of Shirley Hodge Evans, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born Jan. 18, 1953, in Manning, he was a son of Margaret Goins Evans Deprima and the late Jack Evans. He was a retired quality control inspector for Federal Mogul, a U.S. Army veteran, and was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include his mother and stepfather, Paul Deprima of Greeleyville; two daughters, Anna Evans and Jennifer Blasko of Manning; a son, Dustin L. Evans of Manning; two brothers, Tommy Evans of North Myrtle Beach and Ricky Evans of Manning; two sisters, Jackie Norris of Gaston and Susie Porter of Manning; and a grandson, Dustin L. Evans Jr. of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Tommy Burgess officiating.

Burial followed in Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Cornetta N. Frierson

Cornetta Nelson Frierson, 92, widow of Henry Frierson Sr., died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at McLeod Health Center, Florence.

Born March 8, 1912, in Summerton, Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Titus and Lula Nelson. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a retired farmer. In her youth, she was a member of St. James AME Church. In her later years, she joined St. Matthew AME Church, where she remained supportive and faithful until her demise.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas (Almettia) Frierson of Bronx, N.Y., and Henry (Cozetta) Frierson of Teaneck, N.J.; five daughters, Susie Boyd, Amie Cunningham, Sarah (Eugene) Wicker and Daisy (Layden) Taylor, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the Rev. Evelyn Frierson Dukes of the home; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; adopted daughter, Deloris Messick; and adopted son, Bryant Dingle.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Johnnie and Harry Frierson.

Funeral services Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at St. Matthew AME Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor, officiating, assisted by Presiding Elder Alonza Middleton, the Revs. Dr. S.R. Miott, Leroy Green, Silas Spann and R.L. Brown.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

E. Roger Ipoc

E. Roger Ipock, 78, husband of Mary Alice Turner Ipock, died Friday, October 22, 2004, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born December 15, 1925, in Vanceboro, N.C., he was a son of the late Charlie Lee and Mary Ethel Smith Ipock. He was retired area manager for Progress Energy, an honor graduate of North Carolina State University, a WWII Army veteran, a member of First Baptist Church, former deacon, teacher of P.T. Bradham Sunday School Class, a member of Manning Rotary Club, Mullet Club, liaison for Downtown Manning Revitalization Project, chairman of Committee of 100, Retiree Committee of Chamber of Commerce, member of Santee-Wateree Mental Health Board of Directors for 26 years, and member of Manning Municipal Election Committee.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a son, David R. (Debbie) Ipock of Charlotte, N.C.; three daughters, Lynn (Jim) Pope of Charlotte, Karen (Tim) Hodgin of Los Angeles, Calif., and Lisa (Kyle) Roland of Wagener; two sisters, Edith Cox of Raleigh, N.C. and Lila Cleve of Vanceboro, N.C.; four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Bridges and the Rev. Dudley Neal officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Kitchen Renovation Fund, 49 W. Boyce Street, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Sharon Roberson

Sharon Kay Bell Stout Roberson, age 58, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Hoopeston, Ill., a daughter of the late Archie Benton and Clara Ann Hinton Bell. She graduated from Central Carolina Technical College nursing program with the highest honors. She previously worked for Tuomey hospital and Internal Medical Associates PA. She was presently employed as a nurse at National Healthcare. She was a loving mother and “Nana” who loved life and her family and nursing. She was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are one son, Jeffery W. (Tammy) Stout of Dalzell; two daughters, Julie Stout (Ricky) Hair of Pinewood and Stephanie Stout (Vann) Coker of Alcolu; five brothers, Marion Bell, Larry Bell and Gary Bell, all of Hoopeston, Terry Bell of Henning, Ill., and Robert Bell of Wheaton, Mo.; one sister, Shirley Bell Malott of Rensselare, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Eric Stout, Desere Stout, Chris Johnson, Tonya Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Angel Hair, Bella Hair, Ryan Coker and Alaina Coker.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Archie Bell Jr. and Eugene Bell; and one sister, Edit Bell Sprague.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004 in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Elizabeth Windham

FLORENCE – Elizabeth Windham, 18, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at her residence.

Miss Windham was born in Florence, the daughter of Jon and Frances Canady Windham of Florence. Elizabeth attended Hudgens Academy and graduated from Laurence Manning Academy. She was a student at Florence-Darlington Technical School. She was an employee of Craig’s Used Cars of Florence and loved her work there. She was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church and was attending Peniel Baptist Church.

Surviving are her parents of Florence; a brother, Jordan, and sister, Sarah, both of the home; her maternal grandparents, Andrew and Pearleen Canady of Effingham; paternal grandparents, Henry and Phyllis Windham of Lynchburg; and her boyfriend, Matthew Webster of Timmonsville.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.

Entombment followed at Florence Memorial Gardens.

Elijah Bennett

Elijah “Son” Bennett, 86, widower of Mary Ethel Gipson Bennett, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born May 16, 1918, in the Potato Creek community, Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Moses Bennett and Mary Session Bennett. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a retired farmer. He was a lifelong member of St. James AME Church.

Survivors include two sons, Willie E. (Darlene) Bennett and Floyd Bennett, both of Baltimore; six daughters, Lizzie Stephens and Barbara Thompson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Fannie (Thadeus) Davis of Baltimore, Sylvia (Velta) Wright and Shirley James, all of Manning, and Lucille (Norman) Canty of Summerton; one sister, Hattie Gerow of Summerton; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one adopted son, Jessie Cain of Davis Station.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at House of God Miracle Temple in the Davis Station community, with the Rev. R.L. Brown officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. James Gibbs, Pastor Gwendolyn Taylor and Elder Frank Taylor.

Burial was in the St. James AME Church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Jewell Blanding

Jewell Blanding, 67, died Oct. 25, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 7, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Stephen Blanding and the late Sallie Cummings Blanding. Mr. Blanding obtained his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed with Massachusetts General Hospital for a number of years. Upon returning to Manning, Jewell reunited his affiliation with Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Jules Huggins of Boston; one daughter, Deborah Huggins of Boston; two sisters, Elloree Gooden of Manning and Ruby Thames of Boston; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stephen L., Everette Isiah and Willie Mood Blanding.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 3004, at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Henry Presley, Wayne Blackwell and Terry Johnson, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

William Stanley Campbell

William Stanley “Bill” Campbell, 57, husband of Sandra Johnson Campbell, died Sunday, October 31, 2004, at Campbell’s Crossroads in Ruby.

Born May 25, 1947, in Ruby, S.C., he was a son of Juanita Oliver Claire and the late Calvin L. Campbell. He was assistant manager of Sumter Financial Services, a graduate of Central Carolina Tech in Electronic Engineering, a United States Navy veteran of Viet Nam, having served with the Seabees, owner of B & H Auto Sales in Sumter and was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Sumter, and his mother of Las Vegas, Nevada, are two daughters, Bambi C. Shelley and husband, Mark, of Wedgefield, Sumer C. Jarvis and husband, Kevin, of Dalzell; a sister, Barbara Koontz of Las Vegas, Nevada; three grandchildren, Luke, Lance and Mollie Shelley; and stepmother, Doris Campbell of Ruby.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Manning with the Rev. Mike Murdoch officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.
