Arthur E. Crosby

COLUMBIA – Retired Master Sgt. Arthur Etal Crosby, of Columbia, beloved ex-husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, departed this earthly life on Monday morning, Oct. 25, 2004, at the Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia.

The eldest son of the late Lee Crosby and Peggie Nelson Crosby, he was born July 31, 1932, in Rimini. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church of Columbia, where he was active in Bible study and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Army and began a distinguished career in which he would see action in both the Korean and Vietnam wars, earning no less than 15 medals and citations as well as an eventual ascension to the rank of master sergeant. Shortly after joining the Army, he married Sallie Luedna Wells of Pinewood. From this union, seven children were born.

After serving his tour of duty in the Army, he went from defending his country to nurturing it, working for such charitable organizations like Habitat for Humanity, where he refurbished furniture and appliances for needy families. He also served food to the homeless in various shelters and soup kitchens.

He leaves to mourn, his beloved ex-wife and friend, Sallie Crosby; two daughters, Debra Green of Highland Park, N.J., and Beverley Crosby of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons, Terry and Kai Crosby of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Two children preceded Mr. Crosby in death, Cassandra Crosby and Cynthia Crosby, and two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini with the Rev. William Polite, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Warren Hatcher, Amos Hatcher, Michael Ross and Arnold Williams.

Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of these arrangements.

Thurman Deel, Jr.

Thurman Deel, Jr., 70, widower of Gladys Louise Dye Deel, died Thursday, October 28, 2004 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Honaker, Va., he was a son of the late Thurman Deel, Sr. and the late Edna Compton Deel.

He was retired from the Chrysler Corporation after 35 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include a son, Patrick Deel; two daughters, Kathrine Deel of Summerton and Beatrice Lindell; two sisters, Thelma Black and Pauline Kalisz; a brother, J.B. Deel; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker, Va., at a later date.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of local arrangements.

G. Ann Hinson

Mrs. G. Ann Hinson, 54, of Hopkins, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004. Born in Manning, she was the daughter of Marie McLeod Barkley and the late Louie Barkley of Sumter County. She was a respiratory therapist at Baptist Medical Center and vice president and treasurer of Curtis Fabrication and AB Fabrications.

Surviving are her loving and devoted husband of 20 years, Curtis Hinson of Hopkins; daughters, Terri Ezzell and her husband, Ricky, of Eastover, Staci Merritt and her husband, Kyle, of Cayce, and Michelle Holman and her husband, Bill, of Gilbert; her mother of Sumter; one sister, Margaret Avins; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services were held on Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jack Smith officiated.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Carolinas Community Hospice.

Greenlawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Harriet DuBose Holder

Harriet DuBose Holder, 78, widow of Arthur Holder, died Sunday, October 31, 2004, in Pinewood.

Born January 13, 1926, in the Home Branch Community of Manning, she was a daughter of the late Lewis John and Hattie Rose Bradley DuBose. She was a cosmetologist and teacher at a local beauty college, a former reservations clerk for a motel, and was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Manley C. DuBose and his wife, Ruby, of Pinewood; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Sudie Poole, Trudie Johnson, Essie Parker and Hattie Mae Elliott; three brothers, Marvin DuBose, Carl DuBose and Louis DuBose.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Neal Hodge officiating.

Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, P. O. Box 2229, Sumter, S.C. 29151.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

James D. Jones

James Douglas “J.D.” Jones, 71, husband of Frances Thames Jones, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 28, 1933, in Pamplico, he was a son of the late Tom W. and Josie Poston Jones. He was a retired truck driver for Moore Oil Co. and a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Davis Station.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a son, James Douglas “Doug” (Brenda) Jones Jr. of Manning; three daughters, Sandra Jones Hutchinson of Manning, Liz (Rusty) Harrington of Sumter, and Peggy Jones (Randy) Haley of Manning; five brothers, Charles Jones of Florence, LeRoy Jones of Johnsonville, Ray Jones of Effingham, David Jones of Florence and Carroll Jones of Central Point, Ore.; three sisters, Sarah Cox of Sellers, Barbara Jean Wilder of Johnsonville and Dorothy Brantley of Florence; eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Joe Poston officiating.

Burial followed in Wilson Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, c/o Gladys B. Griffin, 1372 White Oak Drive, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Octavia Robinson

Octavia Robinson, age 84, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, in a nursing home in Florence after a brief illness.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late John Wesley Baker and Ellen Elliott Baker. Mrs. Robinson was a homemaker and was a member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Mrs. Robinson was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Robinson; and a son, Lindsey Lanair Robinson.

Surviving are a grandson, Lindsey (April) Robinson Sr. of Timmonsville; one great-grandchild, Lindsey Robinson Jr. of Timmonsville; one brother, Edward Baker of Scranton; a sister-in-law, Juanita Hardy of Turbeville; a brother-in-law, Ercell Roberson of Moncks Corner; and two special friends, Libby Koonce and Sylvis Floyd.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Burial followed in Bethany Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy G. Rose

KINGSTREE – Dorothy Gean Rose, 49, died Oct. 26, 2004, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital, Kingstree.

Born April 1, 1955, in the Barrineau community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Dorothy Mae Blackwell Rose and the late Clyde Dell Rose. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of East Clarendon High School Class of 1974. She joined Oak Grove AME Church at an early age, serving on the usher’s board. After moving to South Norwalk, Conn., she joined Bethel AME Church, serving on the usher’s board. She reunited herself back to Oak Grove AME Church upon moving back in 2002. She was employed with Arthur Anderson for 14 years while living in South Norwalk, Conn. After moving back to South Carolina, she was employed with Rose Cleaning Service.

Survivors besides her mother, Dorothy Mae Rose of Kingstree, include one son, John Amos Fulton of California; five brothers, Clyde (Mattie) Rose, James (Minister Mary) Rose, Russell Rose, Willie Edward Rose, all of Kingstree, and Jerome (Ann) McFadden of Hawaii; three sisters, Shirley (Daryl) Rodgers of Norwalk, Conn., Linda (Ike) Cooper of Kingstree and Bessie Washington of Bronx, N.Y.; and an adopted sister, Deloris (Johnny) Brand of Florence.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Levern Fulton.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at Oak Grove AME Church, Burnt Branch Road, Lake City, with the Rev. Oliver Davis Jr., pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Old McFadden Cemetery in Lake City.

James Watson

James Watson was born March 22, 1924, in Summerton, Clarendon County. He died Friday morning, Oct. 29, 2004, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004,at St. Mark A.M.E. Church, Summerton.

Fleming Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Mattie Garland

LAKE CITY — Mattie Leola Witherspoon Player Garland, 90, widow of Willie Garland, died Nov. 1, 2004, at Carolina Hospital System, Lake City.

Born Dec. 20, 1913, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Robert Witherspoon and Sarah Mouzon Witherspoon. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She joined Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church at an early age and made Christ her personal Savior. She served on the Missionary Society and in any capacity needed.

Survivors include one son, Willie (Lucille) Garland of New Zion; four daughters, Alma Brock of Greeleyville, Sarah Garland and Merlene Brown, both of Lake City, and Shirley (Henry) Felder of Manning; one granddaughter reared as her own, Gayle Garland of Lake City; one brother, Jammie Witherspoon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one sister, Irene Cobb of Stanford, Conn.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Turbeville, with Elder Zander Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder James McFarlan, and the Revs. William Webb, W.L. Thompson and Danny McCray.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Betty Strickland

Miss Betty Strickland, 68, of Hyattsville, Maryland, formerly of Liberty, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004.

Miss Strickland, the daughter of the late Paul Tate and Mary Lou Frances McCarley Strickland was born July 24, 1936, in Alcorn Co., Miss.

Surviving are sisters Mrs. Corinne (Daymon) Maddox of Phoenix, Ariz., Ms. Marian S. Morton of Charlotte, N.C. and brother Mr. George W. (Jean) Strickland of Manning. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service was held on Wednedday, Nov. 10 at Gilmore Memorial Park, with the Rev. Cecil Donahue officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 3409D Wendover Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27407.

Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty assisted the family.

A. Marie R. Thames

Alice Marie Ragin Thames, 91, widow of Rufus Boyd Thames Sr., died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at NHC of Sumter.

Born Feb. 2, 1913, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late William Edward and Fanny Alice Bradham Ragin. She was a retired nurse’s aide from Clarendon Memorial Hospital and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, R. Boyd Thames Jr. of Columbia and Charles R. Thames Sr. of Boiling Springs; a sister, Edna Ward of Manning; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Paul M. Sullivan officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
